A-Rod’s ‘Roids Make Him An A-Hole

Here’s Alex Rodriguez in 2007, talking to Her Perkiness Katie Couric (video loads after the obligatory douchey ad for CBS):

Couric: “For the record, have you ever used steroids, human growth hormone, or any other performance-enhancing substance?”

Rodriguez: “No.”

Couric: “Have you ever been tempted to use any of those things?”

Rodriguez: “No.”

Drum roll, please …

Oops.

Any contract attorneys out there want to explain to me just how he’s still going to collect $275 million from the Yankees?

Maybe it was in his contract to lie about it.

  2. 2 angry army wife Feb 10th, 2009 at 8:08 am

Maybe it will just turn into an “innocent, honest mistake.” I mean, people make them all the time, right?

  3. 3 Lisa Feb 10th, 2009 at 8:08 am

Which baseball player hasn’t used some kind of “enhancement”? The human body can not perform at high levels for long periods of time without burn out.

275,000,000!!!! Man that guy makes more than all the other Rodriguez’ in New York combined.

  5. 5 Rocko Feb 10th, 2009 at 9:20 am

He can still hit, run and catch. Why would his contract be in danger?

  6. 6 Hurricane Feb 10th, 2009 at 10:25 am

He was/is an *sshole already with how he treated his wife at the end of their relationship. And to think I used to like the guy. Of course I can’t be surprised. Everyone is a douche to me in one way or another.

  7. 7 D---- Feb 10th, 2009 at 10:42 am

What? Professional athletes use steroids and lie convincingly about it?

Next thing you will know, he will claim to be the poor victim of all this. It’s not his fault he was pressured into doing it so he can make millions more….poor A-Rod, but he didn’t want to….really….

I cannot even pretend to care about athletes anymore. I wouldn’t be shocked if Phelps came out and admitted steroid use.

  8. 8 Jannah Feb 10th, 2009 at 11:27 am

    LOL everyone!

I would respect him a tiny bit if he hadn’t lied about being tempted. Temptation is everyhwere. It’s not a sin to be tempted, only to act on the temptation. And, he did act, oops.

  9. 9 Catharine Feb 10th, 2009 at 11:30 am

Hmmm maybe that’s why he likes Madonna. She is beginning to look like a steroid using she-male. I know, I know, that’s harsh. But true.

  10. 10 bigmama Feb 10th, 2009 at 12:25 pm

Catharine, I think A-roid might be Madonna’s dealer. And it is true Madonna has been looking rather masculine. Maybe A-fraud might be a little in the closet.

  11. 11 Habanada Feb 10th, 2009 at 12:40 pm

Good point, Jannah. Anyone who says they’ve never been tempted is a liar. Even Jesus was tempted. It’s the giving in that matters (or the not giving in, I guess).

  12. 12 Carlo Feb 10th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

“I was young and naive.” Sure, A-Rod. You were a victim. You didn’t know what you were doing.

I think this is really a non-story because steroid usage was NOT ILLEGAL in Major League Baseball during the time period discussed here.

Further, I hate the jargon used here. “Performance Enhancing Drugs.” You mean, like cortisone shots for sore joints? Or whatever is injected for pain to allow players to play? Or Advil to reduce swelling? Or a multivitamin in the morning? Or a pre-game cup of coffee? All of these items are “drugs.”

I constantly hear about dangers that these “role models” visit upon impressionable kids by using these “performance enhancing drugs.” Really? What about the dangers of general anesthesia to undergo plastic surgery? Do we have constant news update when some actress enhances her breasts and then gravely discuss her fitness for awards?

Michael Phelps gets photographed taking a bong hit and you hear media-types (Geraldo in particular) saying he shouldn’t face criminal charges or loss of endorsement deals because he thinks pot should be legal. Okay…so it’s permissible to take “performance DEGRADING drugs” but not okay to take “performance ENHANCING drugs?”

Insofar as our new Presidential administration is willing to fund research into stem cells and willing to use the result of this research, what is wrong with finding other PROVEN ways to improve health/performance. How long will it be before Human Growth Hormone is REGULARLY prescribed, especially as the Baby Boomer generation ages? Probably a heck of a lot cheaper than other treatments.

And if the side-effects hit Mr. Rodriguez, well let the buyer beware, you rolled the dice and hit snake-eyes. By the way, how many users are negatively impacted? One percent? Five? Ten? Anybody ever heard a credible statistic on this?

Sports is entertainment. Actors/actresses have LONG used any means necessary to maintain looks/health, enhance looks or even change appearance for their roles. Why NOT use steroids? Especially when the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is so particularly rich that the futures of distant generations can be financially assured.

Last I knew taking steroids without a perscription from a doctor IS ILLEGAL and unless he has got a doctor willing to stand up for him he was committing a felony.

Alright I’ll say it. Baseball sucks.

“By the way, how many users are negatively impacted? One percent? Five? Ten? Anybody ever heard a credible statistic on this?”

Don’t need a statistic man – I played college football. 5 or 10% might be the number of people that experience DRASTIC side effects, but having nards the size of river pebbles isn’t the only thing steroids can do to you. Fully grown men with pimples covering their backs, with tempers shorter than their now-shriveled junk is a reality in a lot of locker rooms.

Way to try and shift the conversation by bringing up legal treatments like cortisone shots and multivitamins by the way. Because we all know that cortisone shots change the entire chemical makeup of our bodies right? And I know my multivitamin has driven me into a wife-slapping rage on more than one occasion.

I didn’t use buy into the whole role model thing, but I learned my lesson in college. It’s not that these kids want to use steroids because they want to ‘be like A-Rod’ or anything, but these athletes provide them with the perfect excuse. Any time they get busted, all the athletes say is ‘Well everyone does it, I just wanted to stay competitive’. And that’s exactly what you’ll hear if you ask some kid why he’s doing them.

Quit busting potheads in sports, start busting actual cheaters like A-Rod.

Cheater. Scrub his name off the record books.

An interesting pep talk for Iraqi Police

    I give it four stars:

    I love baseball.

Regarding “being tempted” … there’s a double-interpretation that can occur with this word I discovered some years ago. A-rod might not have been lying when he said he wasn’t tempted to use “any of those things”. Stay with me for a sec … let’s say someone is tempting me with a plate of bleu cheese. Since I am not even interested in nor desire the stuff (blechhh), even though it can be said that I am being tempted by someone with the cheese, I am not really being tempted. See? I’m tempted, but I’m not.

So, the real question should be “did you desire any of these things at all, to any degree whatsoever?” I bet the answer is yes.

Now, having said all that, did he lie when asked the question by Ms Couric? I bet the answer is yes.

Baseball sucks only when the team doesn’t win or the total runs don’t cover for me.
