Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi will be honored next month at the Humane Society of the United States’s annual Genesis Awards. They will jointly receive the Wyler Award, given every year to celebrities who put animal rights in the spotlight.
“Ellen and Portia stand up for their beliefs, and they have had a major impact in spreading the message about animal protection,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS.
“They had a particularly significant role in helping to pass Proposition 2, and they helped make the case to the people of California and to the rest of the nation that all animals deserve humane treatment, including animals raised for food.”
Proposition 2, eh? I remember that. It was right around the time she signed up to become Cover Girl’s newest spokesmodel, despite the fact the beauty company is the largest that still tests on animals. Die, bunnies!
Ironically those print ads just started appearing in the March issues of all the magazines. Great timing there, HSUS.

The makeup doesn’t help her. A paper bag might.
I don’t know, I think she looks okay in that picture. I mean if the strangely attractive girls P.E. teacher is your thing. And surprise! It’s my thing today!
Just for the Challenge factor…I’d hit it.
I’m with Jrod, but only if Portia is included.
It almost seems like forever ago (October 2007) when Degeneres gave away Iggy, a dog she had adopted from Mutts and Moms a week earlier?
Apparently you only have to like animals in public.
I wonder if Ellen’s racoon makeup artist knows about the bunny thing?
Whenever I see a good looking girl with an ugly guy I figure he’s either rich or has a big dick*. Now when I hear Portia de Rossi is with Ellen, I must admit I had no idea Ellen was that rich. Because if she isn’t … well … that just raises a lot more questions that I just don’t want answered.
*Or a fantastic sense of humor, right Cosmo?
I actually really like Ellen (leave me alone!) so that makes this even worse for me. I knew about her campaigning for Covergirl already (thanks to deceiver, I believe) and when the commercials started showing recently I was reminded of this big fat in-your-face hypocrisy on her part. It makes me sad.
For those who wondered if Portia de Rossi was a ‘lesbian of convenience’ a la Ann Heche, while at an upscale hotel bar in LA back in the Ally McBeal days, she put the full court press on a female acquaintance of mine. Genuine lesbian.
I think all these stupid awards mean is that the celeb has made a massive cash donation. That’s it.
Oh, yeah, Prop 2: putting animals ahead of humans yet again since 2008!
Maybe the Humane Society wouldn’t want her money anymore if they knew it was from Covergirl.
Fortunate Son, my sister spotted Portia doing the same thing w/an unnamed civilian, outside a coffee shop in LA in January of 2002. So I wasn’t too shocked when she latched onto Ellen (or vice versa).
You know, I do think Ellen is really funny, and she seems likeable (if a little prone to weepiness on-camera, which…yuck). This is disappointing, but I figure it’s due to a lack of personal attention on her part. I may be wrong.
What a joke. Children are drinking out of mud puddles in Africa and these lesbos are getting an award for supporting the kind of animals that drink and deficate in the same filthy mud puddles!??!!? America has gone to the dogs. Literally. God help us!
About 18 years ago I went to a comedy club and almost walked out during Ellen Degenerate’s show. I’m surprised people have sent her so far up the celebrity pole.
Let’s face it, Dory was probably the height of her career
See, she is for the animals… she helped save Nemo.
What is it about animal rights that really brings out the hypocrite in celebrities?
“What is it about animal rights that really brings out the hypocrite in celebrities?”
I don’t think they’re hypocrites, I think they’re just that stupid.
I love them both. Portia especially.
Maybe Ellen was unaware of Covergirl’s track record when she signed on. I’m hoping she will be a catalyst for change in this entire industry, starting with Covergirl. After all, if a cosmetics giant like Covergirl would denounce animal testing, what choice will all the others have? It’s sad that some only do the right thing when it’s in fashion, but if that’s what it takes. . .
