We’ve all been eagerly awaiting the next project from the Coen Brothers, and now here it is:
That’s an ad for something called The Reality Coalition, a not-at-all-smug name for a consortium of environmental organizations, including the Alliance for Climate Protection (founded by Al Gore), the National Wildlife Federation, the National Resources Defense Council, and the League of Conservation Voters. They’re trying to make sure WE ALL DON’T DIE FROM GLOBAL WARMING, as is allegedly imminent.
Hey, if a couple of Hollywood big shots want to help put a bunch of hardworking coal miners out of work to make Al Gore feel better about never being president, it’s no skin off my black lung. I see no problem whatsoever with bringing modern society to a halt until we figure out how to run our lights and heat and DVD players off a windmill.
But it turns out they might have a very powerful opponent, according to Variety:
The coalition is fighting what they call a “misinformation” campaign by the coal industry to convince the public that there is such a thing as “clean coal,” or that it is possible in the near future, as a way to divert attention from the need to curb carbon emissions.
But even President Obama mentioned clean coal in his speech before Congress on Tuesday.
He pledged to invest “fifteen billion dollars a year to develop technologies like wind power and solar power; advanced biofuels, clean coal, and more fuel-efficient cars and trucks built right here in America.”
Whoops! This could turn out to be quite a battle. You might even call it a coal-frontation! Coal-lash of the Titans! Mortal Coal-mbat! Please, please, sit down, folks, you’re too kind.

I think you have this wrong…we, the unwashed masses, are not allowed to use the “un-clean clean-coal” for our needs but the righteous members of The Reality Coalition need to spew tons of carbon because they are trying to save the earth!
It’s a clean COAL-ition!
Oh, ugh. I want to see some sort of statistics on how much carbon is generated by Al Gore’s adamant, desperate refusal to bugger off. How much damage does he do to the environment–never mind our retinas and nerves–by continuing to inflict his bloated visage and his absurd ecoflatulence on the rest of the world? Seriously, can’t he learn to play Scrabble or grow strawberries or something and just give it a rest already?
“The Reality Coalition”
So, let me guess, reality is now owned by a handful of self-appointed libtards? The name of the “Coalition” sounds so orwellian to me that I expect only bull$hit from them.
Where’s the hypocrisy here?

Rain is caused by rising air and moisture. Air must have wind energy to rise. So taking energy out of air will result in less rain. Less rain results in hotter days. Wind farms will cause global warming and drought. Just ask any real scientist. This a true inconvenient truth, maybe.
Damn Kulaks and their coal. What would Uncle Joe, sorry, Uncle Barry, do?
Coal is an all natural organic product that generates electricity to help heat homes in the winter.
Sure, moron “movie” makers who live in bankrupt California don’t worry too much about freezing to death in the winter. But maybe they should set a good example and stop using electricity until California turns off its 6 coal-fired generators.
The thing that the Hollyweirds don’t understand is that any time you “use” any fuel, you have an exhaust of spent fuel, of some kind. Energy used creates energy exhaust or waste, and many types of exhaust can actually be cleaned or scrubbed before it goes out the stack. It’s like how they say not to use gas cars and to use electric cars instead, not even realizing that electricity comes from an energy plant that used SOME kind of fuel! Unless of course you have giant solar panels on top of your car.

I’m going to write to Homer Hickam and ask him about clean coal. I checked his website but didn’t find anything on it among the coal mining info that he does have.
But it feels like you’re doing something. That’s what’s important.
And remember Jannah it takes energy to make the solar panels in the first place. There is no such thing as a “clean” energy. Everything creates a by-product. Solar has waste during production and at end of life (solar panels don’t last forever, neither do windmills).
What do you do when hail breaks a solar panel/cell?
Throw it out of course….where it goes into the landfill
I think Simon’s point is probably closest to the gist of the whole ecohysteria movement–just as it has been for EVERY pet cause of celebrities. What counts isn’t so much results, but how good it makes you feel about yourself. That’s why, instead of signing over the take from an album or movie, a celebrity instead volunteers his or her oh-so-valuable time and image.
That way, the star gets to feel like a participant, like they’re actually accomplishing something, without parting with a significant amount of cash themselves. They’re whipping up support among the flyovers, “raising awareness”, and looking like saints, all while committing a minimal (for them) amount of money to whatever they’re supporting. This isn’t invariably the case, of course, but it’s pretty much the trend. Sting could save the rainforest (remember those? They’re like jungles, only hipper.) with the haul from one CD release, but it’s so much more image- and ego-enhancing to talk about it, get some face time, and get US to underwrite their cute little efforts.
LOL you guys. X-D
Beige, you mean that Demi Moore is not really going to save millions of people from starvation?! WTH!
Al Gore doesn’t have to worry, Barry will never turn on him…soon enough, the “clean Coal” quote will “disappear”…
Jannah, not even if she baked Ashton into a batch of cookies.
Actually Jannah, Demi wants to save millions of people from slavery, not starvation.
Folks can starve all they want, they just can’t do it in chains.
