Protesters to U2: “Who’s Gonna Pay Your Back Taxes?”

U2 is out promoting their new album, Whatever the New U2 Album Is Called. And it sounds like some of their fellow countrymen are sick of Bono running around telling world governments how to handle their business, when he won’t even pay his fair share of taxes to his own:

Following a demonstration outside the offices of the Department of Finance in Dublin on Wednesday, campaigners continued their crusade on Friday in London.

During an “impromptu” gig by the band on the roof of the BBC headquarters, a small group of demonstrators staged a seemingly spontaneous protest berating the band for exploiting a tax shelter in the Netherlands.

Agitators held makeshift placards bearing inscriptions such as: “Bono: pay your taxes” and “Bono: don’t be a banker”. Another held a home-made sign with the caption: “We’ll downl’d it 4 free and give the money to charity”…

It is not yet clear if the protest in London forms part of a co-ordinated strategy by tax reform campaigners or if it was spontaneous. A number of prominent international organisations including Christian Aid and the Tax Justice Network (TJN) have previously criticised the band’s tax affairs since U2 moved one of its companies to the Netherlands in 2006 after the Irish government introduced a €250,000 cap on the tax exemption scheme for artists…

TJN estimates that funds held globally in tax havens could generate $255 billion (€200 billion) in additional tax revenues, enough to finance the Millennium Development Goals, a project that aims to halve extreme poverty, halt the spread of HIV/Aids and provide universal primary education by 2015, which has been endorsed by Bono.

U2 want to change the world. They just don’t want to pay for it.

Jennifer Love Hewitt Continues to Feel Good About Herself

The Insider has the breaking news. Or should I say… the breaking-up news!

Breaking up is never easy and it can certainly cause us to act out in all sorts of potentially unhealthy ways. But Jennifer Love-Hewitt, whose broken heart is on the mend after splitting from fiancée Ross McCall, has found that exercise is the key to staying relaxed and focused. She also allows herself a treat every now and again and seems to be keeping a healthy attitude about her diet.

She tells Life & Style magazine, “Exercising has cut my anxiety way down, and it’s made me sleep better.”

“I allow myself one really bad day a week when I can have all the cupcakes and whatever else I want to have. And the rest of the week, I just try to be really sensible about it.”

I know what you’re saying. “Who cares, Simon?” And you’re absolutely right. This is just a pretext to post the following:

Sometimes I vaguely wonder why I don’t care the least bit about JLH, and the Onion really nailed it.

Rihanna Reconciles With Chris Brown, Dad Approves?

rihannaIn a really sad development to this story, last week Diddy played mediator to Rihanna and Chris Brown, and now this generation’s Tina and Ike are back on.

I know all the statistics about how frequently abuse victims return to their abusers, but what really infuriates me at this point is Rihanna’s dad, who doesn’t appear to be giving nearly enough guidance to a very vulnerable 21-year-old.

Ronald Fenty on February 14:

Describing Rihanna’s current condition after seeing her on Thursday, Fenty said, “There is some bruising. She will be all right. I think so.”

He adds, “At some point, she will speak out. I hope she will stand up for women all over the world.”

Fenty, a salesman and freelance clothing designer, said Rihanna is spending time with girlfriends while she heals. While Fenty said he wouldn’t tell his daughter what to do, he did say, “If it were me, I’d move on.”

Ronald Fenty upon hearing of the couple’s reconciliation:

“I love my daughter with whatever road she takes. I’m behind her win or lose. I will be supportive. If that’s the road she wants to choose, I’m behind her. I hope to see her soon. I talked to her after her birthday, and she told me she’s OK.”

I’m sorry but a wishy-washy stance is not what Rihanna needs at the moment. If there’s one time in a girl’s life when she needs her dad to say that a creep’s a creep and she doesn’t deserve to be treated like that, it’s now. But sad as it is, maybe his response explains why she’s going back to a guy who made her look like this.
