That’s what the National Enquirer is saying. And they’re the ones who broke the story, after all. Take the following with as many grains of salt as necessary:
John Edwards has finally confessed to his cancer-stricken wife Elizabeth what the rest of the world already knows — that he fathered a child with his mistress.
Edwards made the belated admission to his wife in an effort to stop ex-lover Rielle Hunter from going public, sources told The ENQUIRER.
According to them, Rielle is upset over Elizabeth’s new book and wants to go public. She’s been pressuring John to confess to Elizabeth, allegedly, so he gave in to get Rielle to calm down and stay quiet.
I kind of hope this isn’t true. I don’t know if I can live in a world where John Edwards starts admitting things that actually happened. Although it would be nice to see him win “Father of the Year” again!
By the way… Who’s paying Rielle’s bills these days?

National Enquirer and Star publisher American Media has, for all practical purposes, gone bust.
The AMI has been battling bankruptcy rumors for months, after taking on too much debt. Clearly, AMI couldn’t afford to pay back what they owe. So now they’ve come to a resolution: handing 95% of the company over to creditors! Which means that David Pecker and the other investors who bought the company nine years ago have been left a stake that’s worth next to nothing. This is, uh, “avoiding” bankruptcy:
The agreement, which reduces the company’s debt by $227.2 million, transfers ownership of 95 percent of AMI’s common stock to bondholders, the company said Sunday evening. CEO David Pecker… and Evercore Partners bought American Media in 1999 for $850 million.

I agree with Happy Camper – Elizabeth and her children deserved to know the whole ugly truth since August when he acknowledged the affair. I do believe Edwards himself leaked this story to the National Enquirer not Hunter. Obviously, Edwards thought he could keep Hunter quiet and happy with promises of them being together in the future. Hunter had an agenda to be rich and famous. All this stress is not good for Elizabeth health. Hopefully, Edwards is still living at their beach house.
Cherubim has a history of taking up for Edwards. I did that at one time. Surely he wouldn’t cheat on his wife. She’s the love of his life and is sick. Cherubim, JE’s primary problem is that a large group of his supporters were middle aged women (not a slam, I are one.) who were drawn to him by the way he portrayed his love and loyalty for his wife and family. We all know what happened to that. We feel like we’ve been suckered again. We were lied to and he took our time and money. Alot of our fathers and husbands are laughing at us and continue to do so. I’m with you Happy Camper, I’m struggling with working out the anger and disappointment. In the past, I’ve never been all that interested in or followed politics until my older brother moved in my home in the spring of 2007 and lived with my husband and kids. My brother liked talking about politics and he said his son thought John Edwards was the best overall candidate in either party who was running for President. My nephew who is in his late 2o’s had read all of the campaign policies for each candidate and had decided Edwards had the best plan to help get the country moving in the right direction. I went out to his campaign website, did some reading and decided to donate $100 to the Edwards campaign. I was drawn to whole family but especially Elizabeth. I guess that’s why it is hard for me let go of this whole mess. I just feel sick inside whenever I think of how this is effecting Elizabeth and their kids. I hope Elizabeth lives long enough to see Emma Claire and Jack through their college years but maybe I’m asking for too much. John Edwards is dead to me even if he never marries RH. He’s just another self centered bastard who liked having his sexual pleasures meet and his head filled with “how great” he is because that’s how RH got to him stroking his ego – that’s his weakest.

I’ve worked for more than 30 years at a big corporation. I’ve seen plenty of lay offs. Some due to economic conditions others due to executives deciding the company makes more profit in China and Thailand – I’d call that outsourcing. There may have been 3 other men involved. According to a post I read, and we all know how reliable blogs and news reports are, she went back to partying after being dumped in 2006. Per people who say they were around, she had sex with at least 3 other men around the time she got pregnant. I have also known at least 1 woman like this. They don’t have a problem with having sex with what’s in front of them if they want. They truly see no problem with this. They have no moral compass re: sex. It could be someone’s husband, boyfriend, father, they don’t care. I learned the hard way to not introduce my boyfriends to this girl. That didn’t keep her from trolling if she chose. Sex is also part of the end of a date. We asked men in for coffee, she asks them in for sex. This sounds like RH. There are a lot more people around who feel this way than you will ever know.
If this were my family and my husband, I’d be hiring a PI. I know for damn sure what was going on and then I’d find a way to sue this woman. Perhaps for theft. She stole my husband, all the money he spent on her, my children’s peace of mind, my future, his affection. Eveything RH has at this point was stolen from another woman’s family, including that baby. Comment about RH’s reality show. She should pitch a reality show called “Find a Mistress a Husband that Doesn’t Belong to Another Woman”. She could ask Rush Limbaugh to be a participant. He’s got the Creds she likes, money and her resume and years of experieice whould suit him fine. If this supposedly happened since the announcement made on Feb 4 of Elizabeth’s book coming out in May, I’m surprised they’d be together at Tar heels game.
My guess is the latest National Enquirer story about John’s confession to Elizabeth didn’t happen the way it is being portrayed in the story if at all. Rielle is needing attention and probably cash. RH(her friend) used her daughter’s first birthday to sell the latest lies. I’m beginning to think Edwards isn’t the father and looking at a photo doesn’t prove it either.
It’s hilarious how Edwards supporters make it sound like he tripped and fell into Rielle Hunter’s pants. Repeatedly. He must have some serious motor-skill issues.
There are a whole lot of ex supporters who don’t take up for him. Me being one. I read an interesting comment that RH pops up every time JE makes a move to come into the public. It appears to be true. A picture of RH and her baby shows up at about the same time he announces a speaking engagement. No one benefits from this by RH. That last picture was a bad picture. You’d think RH would make sure only really cute pictures of her daughter appear. Poor baby looks like an ostrich in this picture especially around the eyes. I know we’ve heard of “touch up” because they touched up the picture of JE with the baby in the Enquirer, that very 1st picture. JE only wishes he had the biceps the body in that picture had. It doesn’t change who the baby may belong to but it goes to how desperate this group was to produce a picture of JE with the baby. He may have refused to have his picture taken with the baby and left them no choice.
He’s a liar no doubt, but RH may also be willing to stretch the truth to make him pay. Funny how these women always fantasize about happily ever after with just themselves or in this case the 3 of them with no consideration for the legitimate children and wife. My friend the mistress could make up some incredible stories and she always left the kids and wife out. These families nuclear and extended families don’t want these people in their lives. It’s amazing to watch these women work. They have no shame or concept of morality. Then there is the brain dead man with an erection. What do you do?

Yes, I was a supporter of JRE — and still am. I don’t think what he did was any worse than what McCain did to his wife.
The best word for Hunter is “grifter” — not whore. She’s a grifter and she, her psychic, the Youngs (and maybe Mini, Denton and others) were part of what’s called a “long con” preying on a known weakness of John’s.
Because of this, he is and isn’t a victim. But the magnitude of his fall, what it did to his family, the pain it must have caused Elizabeth, and the ultimate loss to everyone makes it a total, classic tragedy — something we don’t often see these days thanks to Freud, Dr. Phil and the wonders of psychotropic drugs that enable us all to live happy, perfect lives!

What exactly does salt peter do? I still like my idea posted above about a reality show designed for mistresses to find husbands that aren’t already taken. I also like sticking RH with disgusting Rush. They deserve each other and each has what the other needs, money and experience respectively. That would be Karma. Before you get all political on me think about that picture and ladies ask your self would you want to be in that picture.

I think she has a thing for “glamour” so his weight would rule him out. I think Blago’s more her type…
So Tarheel, as long as Rielle can float stories to the NE about the affair and who’s the daddy, she in a way, is still continuing her “long con”. It provides her the obvious attention she is trying to demand and trying to blackmail/extort money out of Edwards which is what this was all about.
I think wife’s looking for mistresses is sad, but finding mistresses husband’s of their own would be a community service. Maybe we could do something about the 50% divorce rate in this country. This is the REAL threat to marriage and families in this world.
Tarheelborn. Rush may not be pretty enough, but he has a lot of money, 7 houses and multiple cars at her disposal. She could go back to her home state of Florida where her daddy killed horses for a living. Rush can allow her to “lay around like the house cat” she believes herself to be. You know the one who doesn’t work but is waited on. All she has to do is hide the Viagra or move from house to house to avoid him. She’d probably get a big divorce settlement. In the end he’d probably pay her anything to get rid of her. Can you imagine how that baby is going to grow into womanhood with this woman as her mother. Blogo doesn’t have any real money. After sex, she’d get rid of him just like her many, many other one night stands.
Oh, I forgot. I’m beginning to believe this was a con too. What a mark JE turned out to be and RH is the gift that keeps on giving. I think there is no DNA test because she’s afraid the baby isn’t JE’s and he’s afraid she is. RH doesn’t want the gravy train to end or her media coverage and JE doesn’t want to hurt his wife and family more that he already has. Once Elizabeth is gone I think he will go after her one way or the other. He surely can’t be a pussy all his life.
Actually, I remember reading a post within this past week that John has admitted to people he hangs around with that the baby is his but due to Elizabeth’s illness and the little girl being young they were not going to make it public now. So whoever is selling stories to the NE has no consideration for Elizabeth’s health probably trying to get her out of the picture sooner. My guess is, RH is leaking it to “her friend” or the sister who she hasn’t been in contact with for 15 years but now is using her to sell to the NE. Don’t you think at some point in time even the NE will stop buying her stories about “who’s the daddy”?
Also, I would bet money that if this doesn’t pay off soon, RH and gang will be off working the next “potential” con job.
They’ve probably already picked some poor slob who will feel sorry for her plight. RH, make him unmarried and marry him before he figures out who and what you are.
I’m not sure any of the above has happened yet. It could be another con. JE shows up to give a speech and she pops up to get more press. I would never use my child like she is. Poor baby.
Happy Camper, you nailed it with the timing thing. EVERY mention or appearance of RH and JE, going back to the very beginning, coincided with some splash he made in the race. I wrote it down and will post it if Simon will alllow it. (It’s pretty relevelant to gossip, so I hope he does.) I think the leak-friend is Mimi Hochman, her partner in crime, though it could be the sister. You and Marilyn know a lot about her, too — the way her father killed thoses horses… We won’t go there!!! Jay McInerney has a written a follow up already based on the Allison Poole character called “How it ended: New and collected stories”, but I don’t know if its before Elizabeth Edwards book or not. I’ve reserved this book through my public library and all it says is it’s coming out in 2009.
BTW, did you read the book McInerney wrote supposedly based on then Lisa Druck RH)? I did. All I can say is if RH did all that hard living (sex and drugs) before she was 21 years old (36 different guys), I find it really hard to believe she managed to get pregnant at 43 years old and that it was accidential.

Only 36 men?? Jay must have taken literary license. If you party, drink and take drugs as well as screw everything at the party or at least one thing, even given you might screw the same thing 2-3 times, over a 10-12 year period that’s a hell of a lot more than 36. Haappy Camper – If my memory serves me correctly the 36 men in the book were by time she celebrated her 21st birthday. I believe, RH’s birthday is next Friday, March 20 and she will be 45. Wonder if there will be a new photo or NE story next week for her birthday?
Doing the math, 36 men by the time she was 21 and now she going to be 45. Thats an additional 24 years of hard living (she was married a couple of years too). Let’s say she started at age 15 to 21 – 6 years for 36 different guys. That averages to be 6 guys per year. 6 guys per year x 24 years = 144 “johns” + 36 guys by the time she was 21 = 180 guys roughly. Now I realize she was married for a couple of years but who thinks she was faithful?

I’ve been reading some of the other books Jay McInerney has written and I believe the book I’m reading now, he dedicated that book to his wife. I believe she is somewhat famous? I post later who she is.

Fred Barons was a long time friend of the Edwardses and was JRE’s campaign Finance director in 2004 & 2008. I’ve read gossip on the internet that Barons had a long time mistress in the DC area but his mistress obviously kept her mouth shut. Barons probably figured it was all about money and wanted to “shut RH up”, didn’t ask questions and just started funneling money to both RH and Andrew Young who was a campaign aide and friend of JRE’s. I wonder how much the hospital bill was and who paid that bill when the baby was born and RH lived in the same house with Andrew Young and his wife and their kids – that must have been awful. Of course, then RH was rented her own posh house with the 24 hr body guard. I wonder who threatened her and why she doesn’t needed protection now?

My computer has been down. I just read about Jay McInerney’s new book. As far as Jay’s new book, I read it’s about Allison Poole bringing down a political candidate’s career but I’m not sure if its going to mirror JRE’s family situation. All I know is I’m first in line to get this book from my local library when it comes out (I wouldn’t spend my hard earned money actually to buy the book though).

Marilyn. I think if the baby turns out to be his that the kids will accept their sister. JE needs to go to court prove the child is his or not. If she is then the visitation needs to start NOW. She’s young and needs to know her siblings apart from the affair and her mother. I don’t believe the kids, the young ones or Cate will ever accept RH as a stepmother. They know what she did to their mother and they will barely forgive JE. They don’t need this woman in their lives. JE’s done enough damage to his family. “You don’t bring your mistress home ever.” The little girl however has a place and the family can come to terms with her. This may have to wait for EE to come to terms with it.
BTW, I e-mailed the office in Chapel Hill re: the student at Brown University. I feel that young woman had the courage to ask for an apology and JE needs to get the “NADS” to give her one. RH is going to use Frances anyway she can and JRE has shown he’s a coward by not going to court to get the paternity issue settled. RH wants to remain in JRE’s life and I don’t think he’s man enough to stand up to her for his legitmate kids. It’s like you’ve said women like RH always picture themselves with the man but never include the wife or their children. Do you think JRE would’ve stayed with EE if she didn’t have incurable cancer? Based on his behavior, I’m thinking he would’ve left EE and the kids for RH.
