DECEIVER MADNESS Round 1: Peacock vs. Pollo-vegetarian

activists-headera5-monk-nbc

This could be one of those “mystery seedings” that could have gone either way, folks. What makes NBC’s phoney-baloney “Green” campaign more hypocritical than Sophie Monk’s faux 11-herbs-and-spices vegetarianism? Probably the fact that a heck of a lot more people have actually heard of NBC.

deceivermadnesslogo091 My personal favorite bit of hypocrisy at the Peacock Network came when NBC laid off The Weather Channel’s entire environmental unit during Green Week. Sure, their sportscasters gave up bottled water and car commutes, but the timing of all those pink slips could have been a little more thought-out, guys.

And here’s a memo to Sophie: Maybe you were just promoting PETA’s messages while visiting that KFC in Hollywood. But that doesn’t explain the bag full of food. Maybe the term “vegetarian” means something different in Australia, what with the toilet water swirling the other way and all…

This poll — and today’s seven other Round 1 matchups — will be open for 24 hours. Updated Brackets will be posted tomorrow.

Deceiver Madness '09 Round 1 (Activists bracket): Pick the bigger hypocrite

  • Sophie Monk (12) (53%)
  • NBC Universal's "Green" Campaign (5) (47%)

I went with Sophie. Not only was her hypocrisy more offensive, but her PETA and KFC associations are far more humorous. Have a drumstick and shut up, Sophie!

  2. 2 Saro Mar 9th, 2009 at 10:45 am

Definitely Sophie…because there might not be anything less “animal friendly” than a date with the Colonel.

  3. 3 Toubrouk Mar 9th, 2009 at 10:47 am

Sophie all the way. If she was buying food for a homeless guy, she could have brought yummy vegan food instead of that poison KFC make. This shows us a complete disregard for the more destitute members of the society and it makes her a douche. She got my vote.

  4. 4 Nivek Mar 9th, 2009 at 10:48 am

Again, have to vote for the one that reaches a bigger audience.
NBC is on 24-7, 365 to promote their ilk verses ….um….. who is it NBC is taking on this round?

  5. 5 Carlo Mar 9th, 2009 at 10:48 am

Never heard of her. But NBC has convinced me to turn on all the lights, stereos and TVs and run my A/C full blast during that lame “earth hour” or whatever the hell it is. OK, I don’t have air conditioning, so I’ll just spray an aerosol can into the sky the whole time.

  6. 6 Swede0319 Mar 9th, 2009 at 10:56 am

NBC, what a bunch of weiners!

  7. 7 Seth Mar 9th, 2009 at 11:05 am

PETA promoters are all the biggest idiots. What more needs to be said?

  8. 8 Pastafarian Mar 9th, 2009 at 11:28 am

I had to go NBC because they’re more “important” than Sophie “Who the Hell is she again”? Monk. “I’ve” “decided” to “use” more “quotes” today! “Air” quotes too! I’m gonna air quote everything. Who “wants” to “punch” me?

  9. 9 Beige Mar 9th, 2009 at 11:36 am

What Pasta said, minus the “quotes”.

  10. 10 Matt Mar 9th, 2009 at 11:42 am

I’d forgotten Sophie Monk’s name by the time I got down to the comment box and had to scroll back up for it. So, I’ll go with NBC, whose hypocrisy is more far-reaching.

  11. 11 angry army wife Mar 9th, 2009 at 11:45 am

NBC cause more people watch them and actually listen to what they have to say. I have no idea what or who Monk is.

  12. 12 Ducky Mar 9th, 2009 at 11:47 am

As much as I hate Peta I had to go with NBC for exactly the reason Nivek said.

  13. 13 MrsCman Mar 9th, 2009 at 11:55 am

NBC – they are not motivated by anything other than getting “credit” for supporting a cause they will get more people to watch their network and talk nice about them.

  14. 14 miaox Mar 9th, 2009 at 11:56 am

I went with the lowest common denominator. I assume people just take NBC at their word that they are being/promoting green, without much more thought. But a chicken eating veg? NOOOOOO! I wouldn’t know Sophie from anyone else but she gets to take the fall for all of PeTA on this one.

  15. 15 jenn Mar 9th, 2009 at 11:57 am

NBC – jumping on the green bandwagon just to be seen as cool and relevant

  16. 16 PJ Mar 9th, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Monk, cos it’s the name of one of my favorite TV shows.

  17. 17 Runolfr Mar 9th, 2009 at 12:36 pm

Yet another contender (Sophie Monk) eliminated (in my mind) by the “who the hell is that?” factor.

  18. 18 Dan Mar 9th, 2009 at 12:46 pm

I can’t vote against (or for in this case) the station that brings me The Office, and I don’t really care about the whole ‘go green’ craze anyway, so I voted for Monk.

  19. 19 Menace Mar 9th, 2009 at 12:52 pm

Anyone who blames a bum for their problems wins. Which would have to be Sophie Monk.

Though it would be a good move on NBC’s part to blame all their lame programming on letting the homeless guy down the street plan it. Diversity, yo!

  20. 20 Fortunate Son Mar 9th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Funny, I dated this lunatic vegetarian once. Blindly beautiful, yet not even borderline insane. She had her own utensils and wouldn’t cook in anything that had ever had meat cooked in it, though I once caught her snarfing down a box of Shrimp Pad Thai I had leftover in my fridge.

“Hmmm”, I said, “I think that’s from last Tuesday” with not even a hint of derision.

Apparently she’d been a closet meat eater for years. As was my old boss Phil, but that’s another story entirely.

  21. 21 thatgengirl Mar 9th, 2009 at 1:09 pm

Sophie for taking money to say she’s something she’s not. I think the NBC thing was poor planning, and perhaps an example of one hand not knowing what the other is doing.

  22. 22 Constance Mar 9th, 2009 at 1:11 pm

I went Sophia this time against my first thought. Mostly because I really can’t see NBC going any farther in the brackets. Their attempt is so stupid, it doesn’t even register as “slightly influential” in my mind.

  23. 23 Chronic Malanga Mar 9th, 2009 at 1:26 pm

Just adding that I expect NBC and any other entities like them to be hypocritical, so it wasn’t a huge surprise. But when you are caught red handed with KFC, and like someone else mentioned, blamed a bum for it, then it’s doubly bad.

Fortunate Son, that is a hilarious story.

  24. 24 X Mar 9th, 2009 at 1:30 pm

    NBC- greenwashing at its finest.

  25. 25 sara Mar 9th, 2009 at 1:40 pm

Sophie just for the visual of her carrying the bag.

  26. 26 Herandar Mar 9th, 2009 at 1:59 pm

NBC had an open studio in the streets of Beijing that they kept air-conditioned 24/7, and then they sent the Today show peeps (plus entourage and staff, etc.) across the country at the drop of a hat and across the world for little more.

  27. 27 Discordia Mar 9th, 2009 at 2:26 pm

NBC’s just jumping on the green bandwagon because it’s trendy.

  28. 28 randomstalker Mar 9th, 2009 at 2:39 pm

    I voted for the NBC.

“My personal favorite bit of hypocrisy at the Peacock Network came when NBC laid off The Weather Channel’s entire environmental unit during Green Week.”

    Epic.

  29. 29 Troy Mar 9th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

I just have to vote for anyone involving PETA

  30. 30 Crow Jane Mar 9th, 2009 at 3:16 pm

NBC. Like others have said, more people watch NBC. Ask my parents who Sophie Monk is and they wouldn’t have a clue, on the other hand my mother Tvios (sp?) Today, everyday.

  31. 31 California Dave Mar 9th, 2009 at 3:20 pm

NBC. They have a bigger potential for influencing others to be idiots.

  32. 32 G Mar 9th, 2009 at 3:40 pm

    NBC. Ditto California Dave.

  33. 33 Elle Mar 9th, 2009 at 3:53 pm

Went with NBC. Layoffs > Usual PeTA spokesperson idiocy.

  34. 34 Minnow Mar 9th, 2009 at 3:59 pm

I went with NBC because this Sophie chick doesn’t scroll stupid green peacock logos across the bottom of my television screen every three minutes.

  35. 35 Koka Mar 9th, 2009 at 4:30 pm

    Sophie who??????

    ‘Nuff said.

  36. 36 Ani Mar 9th, 2009 at 4:54 pm

I went with NBC. Sophie’s just plain stupid but she really didn’t impact anything, while NBC’s decisions were not only poorly-timed, but had far-reaching implications for the peopled laid off.

  37. 37 Rocko Mar 9th, 2009 at 5:17 pm

NBC’s Green Week. They send their hosts (and their camera crews) to the four corners of the world to talk about how we need to save the world. Hello! Stay in New York and talk to one of the interlopers who already live there or near there.

  38. 38 D---- Mar 9th, 2009 at 5:46 pm

It’s got to be Sophie cause pollo isn’t really meat

  39. 39 kbug61 Mar 9th, 2009 at 5:53 pm

Who the f*** is Sophie Monk? I had to go with her because I think she must be one of those famous for being famous celebs, and I wish I could vaporize them all. Besides is it so terrible not to be a vegan? Why do people have to fake it?

  40. 40 Amanda Mar 9th, 2009 at 6:24 pm

I can’t blame Sophie–the secret herbs and spices are irresistable–but I had to vote for her anyway.

  41. 41 luscious_t Mar 9th, 2009 at 6:54 pm

I went with Sophie – because these dummy starlets preaching one thing but doing the opposite really get on my nerves.

  42. 42 Kristine Mar 9th, 2009 at 6:57 pm

How could I not vote against GE (the parent-company of this network, or some network)?

  43. 43 Bucky Katt Mar 9th, 2009 at 8:08 pm

Oh, the smell of the alley behind KFC.

  44. 44 Nick Mar 9th, 2009 at 8:08 pm

Sophie. NBC at least has the economy to blame.

  45. 45 Rocco Lore Mar 9th, 2009 at 8:15 pm

I chose Sophie because if you’re going to be a PETA shill, getting a KFC meal isn’t a smart idea.

  46. 46 Meg B. Mar 9th, 2009 at 8:16 pm

    Who is Sophie?

  47. 47 Marc Mar 9th, 2009 at 8:40 pm

While Sophie may have had a momentary brain fart moment, NBC had to have a whole committee of hypocrites to pull off their shenanigans…with memos, written on paper, for sure…

  48. 48 Nati Mar 9th, 2009 at 8:53 pm

I voted for NBC. NBC making “staffing cuts” (I love the expression btw, so…lifeless, as if they were talking about some objects rather than people who lost their jobs) in the middle of their “green week” just seems more important (and a lot more hypocritical) than some petard stuffing her face at KFC. I don’t even know who Sophie Monk is.

  49. 49 Clownfish Mar 9th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

Not only was I patriotically required, as an Australian, to vote for one of OUR non-entity soap-stars, but I hate soapie starlets – and yes, I’m looking at YOU, Kylie Minogue – almost as much as I hate vegans.

  50. 50 That person Mar 9th, 2009 at 10:56 pm

I went with Sophie, mainly for her balls. It takes much bigger and hardier cajones to stand alone in your idiocy.

  51. 51 Christine Mar 9th, 2009 at 11:25 pm

Sophie Monk for the win, please.

  52. 52 k Mar 10th, 2009 at 12:21 am

I’m voting for NBC, just because I like the Weather Channel. It’s a great station to watch when your kids are grounded from the TV and you want to torture them. ;)

  53. 53 katie Mar 10th, 2009 at 1:54 am

sophie for sure! because i remember seeing her (on the computer not in real life lol) at the KFC and thought ‘bitch, didn’t you just pose for PETA?!’

  54. 54 Jennie Mar 10th, 2009 at 9:41 am

NBC, for layin’ off the enviro team.

  55. 55 Chuwah Mar 10th, 2009 at 10:19 am

    NBC

  56. 56 The Irish Mar 12th, 2009 at 3:10 pm

I chose Sophie because it took several NBC executives to equal the stupidity of one her.
