What would March Madness be without a little game-fixing, a bit of point-shaving, or a few well-timed airballs? (Oh, come on, you just know somebody paid Chris Webber to call that nonexistent “time out” against North Carolina in ‘93…)
Deceiver Madness just had to have its scandal too, and we nearly got one last night — thanks to some dork in Liverpool, England, who found a way to vote more than 800 times for KFC in the “Douchebags” bracket, and more than 400 times for the Chinese Olympic Committee in the “Politicos” bracket.
But have no fear: We restored integrity to the game. The “overvotes” and “hanging chads” have been deleted. And we’ve audited all of the other matches to date to ensure that no one else pulled the same stunt.
If you’d like to know what it looked like to our server logs, click here for a gander at just 100 of his phony votes. [Link fixed. -ed] It took us all of 30 seconds to trace the offender’s IP address, and it turns out he’s a lonely dweeb who was upset — nay, wounded — when we picked on his secret crush, Leona Lewis. (He’s been e-mailing us about it incessantly, complete with footnotes gathered from the Lord of the Flies-style fan fic that is the world of Leona Lewis chatrooms.)
It’s sad that some pimply teenager has nothing else to do with a solid 3 hours and 45 minutes of his day — no joke! — besides delete his browser cookies and re-vote 1,200 times. Do something meaningful with your time on this planet, ol’ chap. And if you can’t pull that off, at least start an entertaining blog.
Anyway, Round 1 is nearly in the books, and lookie here! We had a few nail-biters. While Tom Cruise, Al Gore, and Heather Mills routed their opponents, Rachael Ray and the Chinese needed late surges to advance.
Personally, I can’t wait to see what happens next week when Rachael meets Spencer & Heidi. The sheer energy output of all that smugness and perkiness might disable our web server for good.
Be sure to vote on the “Day 4″ contests today! Tomorrow morning we’ll have a complete Round 2 bracket and our first prize drawing.
