DECEIVER MADNESS Round 2: Politicos

politicos-header

Washingtonians and Stephanopolous wannabees, today is your lucky day. It’s a national drinking holiday! (I think St. Patrick is the patron saint of beer tasters, or something like that.)

It’s also Round 2 Gameday in the Deceiver Madness “Politicos” bracket, where you’ll find more bad lies than a first-time golfer.

Where else can you see the current U.S. President, the next King of England, the queen of daytime talk, and an olympic host nation, all battling for hypocritical supremacy? Nowhere, that’s where.

Are you ready to tell a handful of world leaders what you really think of them? All four polls are just one click away! To review the contenders’ tournament résumés from Round 1 and reminisce about who they beat in the “primaries,” click on these pictures:

It may seem like it’s a lot of fun to put a tourney like this together, but it’s you — the readers — who really have all the power. How cool is that? We just rent a supercomputer to count the votes.

So tell us who’s a bigger hypocrite: English royalty or Irish royalty? Oprah or her Chosen One? Silky Breck Girl or “You-betcha” Girl? The Climate Wizard or the world’s biggest hot-air emitter?

This is where the rubber meets the road, folks. You’re picking the four politicians in our “Snark Sixteen.” So even if it is St. Patrick’s Day, stop drinking long enough to vote carefully, please. Or we’ll send Al Franken’s lawyers to your polling place. You don’t want that.

REMINDER: We’re giving away more prizes this week. Leave a comment below (with a valid e-mail address) telling everyone how you voted and why, and you could win some cool stuff. And you can always click here for the most up-to-date brackets.

These polls will be open for 24 hours, and updated brackets will be posted Wednesday. And tomorrow morning, get ready to sharpen your claws for an “Activists” bracket that’s chock full of PETArds. Just like God intended it.

    And my vote goes to:

    Al Gore
    Oprah Winfrey
    Bono
    John Edwards

Now, I will explain my criteria I have used to make my choices. I kept two ideas in my mind when I have voted; the duplicity of the people involved and their capacity to hide it from the public. Here’s how I have applied it:

Gore Vs. Beijing: As much as I hate anything related to Communism, I gave the vote to Al Gore. There’s no-one out there with half a brain and access with free media that can’t call China’s hypocrisy related to the tenure of the games. Al Gore, on the other side is mostly left uncontested.

Oprah Vs. Obama: As a president and a public servant, the life of Barack Obama will be under scrutiny for now on. His crap is already called five minutes after it got out of his mouth. Oprah, on the other hand, built an empire by pandering to the masses with constant diet plans and her book club. She don’t need to deal with the full attention of the community because she’s an entertainer first. She’s dangerous and got my vote.

Bono Vs. The Prince: I was about to vote for the Over-Breed Royal Moron until I found this little quote from Bono:

If you’re wondering what I’m doing here, at a prayer breakfast, well, so am I. I’m certainly not here as a man of the cloth, unless that cloth is leather. It’s certainly not because I’m a rock star. Which leaves one possible explanation: I’m here because I’ve got a messianic complex. Yes, it’s true. And for anyone who knows me, it’s hardly a revelation.
–Remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast (2 February 2006)

God trump Prince. Bono got the vote.

Palin Vs. Edwards: Edwards hands down. Palin never tried to hide any kids.

  2. 2 k Mar 17th, 2009 at 9:16 am

Wow, this is the first time I’ve voted where all the voting was 50/50 when I voted.

    My picks?

Algore: Mainly because he tries to influence more people than the Beijing Olympic Committee (sorry, crazy vote-machine guy). While I hated what they did in the Olympics, and did a few writeups on it, Algore tries to influence us all. Because, you know, WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE OF GLOBAL WARMING!!!

Obama: Because he’s the President and Oprah is not (for which we can all thank God on a daily basis…the Oprah part, not the Obama part). While I absolutely can’t stand Oprah, and she holds an unconscionable amount of sway over entirely too many sheeple, she doesn’t have her hands on any buttons which launch missiles and she isn’t in charge of any sort of attempt at trying to fix a broken war. God help us all.

Bono: Chosen because more people listen to Bono than Bonky Prince Charlie. When is the last time you took anything he said seriously? But while he’s a joke, not enough people realize Bono is a joke, which gets him my vote.

Palin: For all her twaddling about family and such, she sure isn’t home raising them. Maybe if she wasn’t so busy trying to ruin the Republican party, she would have been there for her daughter, and perhaps her daughter wouldn’t have got knocked up and ridiculed on an international stage. That won’t get me any popular votes, but oh well…

  3. 3 Habanada Mar 17th, 2009 at 9:21 am

Al Gore, because he’s been around and we won’t stop hearing his hypocrisy anytime soon.

Obama, because every time he opens his mouth, it’s a different story.

Prince Charles, because, well, he’s an idiot, too.

Edwards, because I’ve yet to see one convincing example of hypocrisy from Palin (omg! her daughter has a purse–and–and–that’s somehow significant!), and, well, he flaunts his with pride.

  4. 4 Runolfr Mar 17th, 2009 at 9:26 am

There are some seriously close fights in this bracket. Again, I have sought to elevate true hypocrisy above mere foolishness or idiocy.

  5. 5 MrsCman Mar 17th, 2009 at 9:35 am

Algore – because his faux credibility is aggravating!
Oprah – at least the President has to be accountable to someone
Bono – I declared a feud with Bono in 2005. He has yet to apologize to me.
Edwards – the creep factor wins out here.

  6. 6 Underestimated Mar 17th, 2009 at 9:49 am

Gore: Because I expected China to lie, but with Al, it’s personal.
Obama: He obviously didn’t expect the job to be like this and now that he’s in it, he’s doing an awful lot if backpedaling.
I forgot who I voted for in the 3rd bracket – I could go either way on that one
Edwards: Because Toubrouk said it best – Palin isn’t hiding kids. Oh, and he’s super creepy.

  7. 7 Jill Mar 17th, 2009 at 9:59 am

Al Gore because he’s still hanging around, Obama because he can do more damage as CIC, Bono because who pays attention Prince Charles?, Edwards because he’s a sleaze

  8. 8 Orion Mar 17th, 2009 at 10:01 am

Beijing – Represents the entire hypocritical country, from Manchuria to Tibet
    Oprah – ’nuff said
Bono – Gore is self indulgent, Bono is self delusional
Palin – Just follow the money across a bridge

  9. 9 Carlo Mar 17th, 2009 at 10:02 am

Had to go with the Chicoms. Things got better in China because of the Olympics, right? Don’t hold your breath.

The Chosen One is a solid bet to make the Final Four.

Went with Chuck over Paul Hewson. Being inbred doesn’t excuse his hypocrisy. But it looks from the comments like I’m in the minority.

Finally, the hair is going to get my vote just about every time.

  10. 10 Rocko Mar 17th, 2009 at 10:12 am

I’m tired of voting for Gore. The Chinese got mine this time around. I expect them to lose though.

Obama. I mean Oprah may have put him in the spotlight but then he took the chance to shine.

Prince Charles. It interesting that if he kept his mouth shut he wouldn’t be on the list but he insists on talking so I insist on voting for him.

I think this is the only poll Palin will lose to Edwards.

  11. 11 Redhead Mar 17th, 2009 at 10:16 am

OWLGore is going to win this whole thing, hands down.
Obama – because his hypocrisy is costing us $$$$
    Prince Charles – just because
Edwards – I couldn’t say it better than already said – Palin didn’t try to hide any of her children!

  12. 12 Chronic Malanga Mar 17th, 2009 at 10:20 am

I haven’t read all the comments yet, and probably won’t get a chance until later this evening, but here are mine and the reasons for the vote:

Beijing: This one was a toughie for me because I seriously despise Al Gore and his hypocrisy is stomach turning. While we expect hypocrisy from China, this is probably the only time that Communism will get a vote in an election that isn’t fixed.

Oprah: I’m no fan of Obama’s, but as a TV personality that reaches so many people, her antics over the election were disgusting. I’m not convinced she wants to replace Michelle.

Bono: Because there are people that actually take him seriously.

Palin: Edwards probably deserved it and I am almost wishing I voted for him, but Palin got the vote this time only because I didn’t think it through.

  13. 13 Chronic Malanga Mar 17th, 2009 at 10:21 am

Woops. That should read, “I’m am convinced she wants to replace Michelle.”

I am a bit rushed. Sorry.

  14. 14 Les Paul Mar 17th, 2009 at 10:24 am

Former VP Gore : although I ‘m not sure he’s a hypocrite as much as he is dangerous for espousing the end-of-the-world in regard to climate. There’s something that just doesn’t feel right about his enthusiasm on this subject. For me, a hypocrite is one who says people should be doing such and such, “just like I am”, and yet they are not doing what they preach (that’s also being a liar – “Du bist ein Lugner” – forgot what movie that was from). A drug addict can tell an up-and-coming-drug-addict-to-be that “you shouldn’t be using all those drugs – it’s not good for you”, and not be a hypocrite – he’s telling the truth. If he also denies using drugs while campaigning against them, now you have a hypocrite. I forget all the quotes anymore, but I don’t think he’s said “I only own a 4-cyl car – I only fly commercial – etc.” – that would be hypocritical. I think he’s not telling the truth about the climate danger, and therefore a hypocrite here, knowing it’s not as big a problem as he’s making it out to be.

POTUS Obama: he has just flip-flopped on so many issues – that’s probably not hypocritical, though – he’s just changing his mind – change he can believe in – oh well.

Prince Charles: this “we have 100-months to save the planet” thing puts him in the same corner as Gore. What is their ulterior motive with this ? Gotta be money and power somehow. And besides, I’ve always felt sorry for Bono ever since Cher left him.

Ex-Sen. Edwards: back to the definition of a hypocrite — I think he’s just simply a liar (e.g., he initially denied being with Hunter or knowing anything about being with her at the hotel). It used to be (how long ago?) that being a Senator or holding some high office of any kind meant it was implied the person was above board, and faithful, and etc., but not anymore – so again, he’s simply a liar, not so much a hypocrite. Gov Palin, on the other hand, hasn’t lied, but has twisted/stretched the truth some about the “Bridge”, and a few other things. So, Liar beats truth-bender.

  15. 15 Marc Mar 17th, 2009 at 10:32 am

No one…and I mean NO ONE…not even an entire commitee of commies, can out-hypocrite Algore.

Barack, because I love seeing Oprah lose at something very so often….

Charlie, because I love voting for that inbred moron. Bono is just a moron…

John Edwards, hands down! He is such a hypocritical POS, how can you not vote for him!

  16. 16 Ky Young Mar 17th, 2009 at 10:37 am

Al Gore — have you seen his documentary? it speaks for itself

Oprah Winfrey — Just for being fat, not fat, complaining about fat people, and then being fat again.

Bono — Because their new album sucks…and the RED campaign for Gap is annoying.

Sarah Palin — I really didnt like the whole spending 100s of Gs for clothing whilst trying to appeal to the lower class. It still riles me up to think about it. I know that John Edwards is probably worse, but I’m a woman and I can’t stand women like Sarah Palin who make other women look bad.

  17. 17 Jrod Mar 17th, 2009 at 10:41 am

Al gore – because he sucks
    Barack – because he sucks
    Bono – because he sucks
    Edwards – because he sucks

  18. 18 D---- Mar 17th, 2009 at 11:02 am

Al Gore – because everyone should change their lifestyles except him.

Obama – he eeked this one out with his recent flip flop on bad economy/good economy

Prince Charles – his recent trip to save the world is doing more to damage it.

Edwards – well… because…. that should be good enough

  19. 19 Minnow Mar 17th, 2009 at 11:26 am

The Folly Green Giant: Enough said.

Obama: For removing the science from politics.

Bono: You gotta give the man credit, it’s pretty damn hard to out-pretense a prince.

Edwards: Because I keep hoping he’ll find that 2nd America, and go bug them for a change.

  20. 20 LN Mar 17th, 2009 at 11:27 am

Gore – because if we are all going to die from global warming, why is it so friggin cold here?

Obama – because we have to fix public schools, that aren’t good enough for his kids to attend.

Bono – because inbreeding does lead to mental and physical disabilities and you can’t blame a man for his parents.

Edwards – because it should be illegal to have your hair look like “ken’s”.

  21. 21 Queen Bee Mar 17th, 2009 at 11:33 am

Al Gore – His hypocrisy leads people to think anything green is as stupid and lame as he is.
Oprah – Ever since Beloved, Oprah has irritated me with her Lady Bountiful schtick. She knows all and will share with us peasants. It would be interesting to see her matched up with the equally all knowing Gwynnie.
Charles – Not really logical but Diana seemed like a nice enough person who was driven crazy by his ugly face and awful family. I’m glad he finally got to marry his horse face.
John Edwards – Geez, how is this even a contest? I didn’t vote for Sarah Palin in November because our views don’t mesh. I didn’t vote for her today because John Edwards is such a colossal jerk.

  22. 22 PJ Mar 17th, 2009 at 11:37 am

    Edwards vs Palin? No mas!!!

  23. 23 Simon Scowl Mar 17th, 2009 at 11:40 am

I really didnt like the whole spending 100s of Gs for clothing whilst trying to appeal to the lower class.

How much did the inauguration cost?

  24. 24 Nivek Mar 17th, 2009 at 11:59 am

    1) The greatest threat the planet has ever know: ManBearPig! We must stop ManBearPig. I’m super serial!
    2) The Chosen One. Almose every time he speaks, it’s the complete opposite of what he said before.
    3) Tough call here. Went with prince-y boy but doubt he’ll beat “Hello! Hello! Hello!”
    4) Edwards. No contest here.

  25. 25 angry army wife Mar 17th, 2009 at 12:10 pm

First, Palin did not spend $100 g’s on her outfits. That has been long since determined. Besides, the Annointed one spent MILLIONS and MILLIONS of dollars on a single inauguaration after saying he wants to cut spending. DUH!

    My picks:
Gore, just cause he needs to be quiet and start practicing what he is preaching. Cause, we are all gonna die!!!!

Obama, nuff said. He changes his mind more than us women on things. Snow is good, then snow is bad. Change? What Change? Let’s hire people who owe $42,000 in taxes and call it an innocent mistake. I could go on, but most people on here know how I feel about him. Still waiting for my money, and for him to walk on water. Besides, I can turn off Oprah, not buy her magazines, but we are stuck with him for the next 4 years.

Bono – Can we not send him to a third world country and leave him there? Pretty please? Another do as I say, not as I do celebrity. And people still send him money by buying his crap. Focus on making music.

Edwards – not enough space to write why I think he is a big hyprocrite. Palin was shoved into the spotlight and the stuff they have thrown out about her is nothing compared to this guy. So what her daughter had a kid while still in high school? The biggest hyprocracy would be if she had an abortion.

  26. 26 jenn Mar 17th, 2009 at 12:17 pm

Gore – yech, ugh, blech – cannot stand him for so many reasons
    Obama – dangerously hypocritical
Bono – so phone, tries to be a regular guy, Charles doesn’t even bother
Edwards – untrustworthy on so many levels

  27. 27 Habanada Mar 17th, 2009 at 12:32 pm

It takes Jrod to get to the heart of a matter! Why didn’t I think of that? Three words that are neat, clean, and gets right to the truth!

  28. 28 Rocky Lore Mar 17th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Gore was the reason all the eco-hypocrisy exists today, Oprah is the hypocrite supporting the hypocrite (much like tax cheat Timmy Geithner going after tax cheats), Prince Charles just because he’s a bigger moron than Bono, and Edwards for lecturing us on “Two Americas” while being the reason for the Two Americas.

  29. 29 Saro Mar 17th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

Gore – A man with not nearly enough accountability for what he says.
Oprah – Again, less accountability, therefore a bigger generator of lies and half-truths.
Bono – For his holier-than-all attitude.
Edwards – Everything he presents in public seems to be a lie.

Basically, I’m calling out all of the above except Edwards, really, for their messianic complexes. Complexes most people seem not to see and complexes they certainly don’t answer for.

  30. 30 mydailylist Mar 17th, 2009 at 1:13 pm

This isn’t a left/right thing but VOTE PALIN. John Edwards is deserving but his star has faded. Palin still plans to annoy us for years to come. Her hypocrisy is on the rise.

  31. 31 The Irish Mar 17th, 2009 at 1:14 pm

As much as I appreciate Obama from freeing us from the Matrix (or at least that’s what I was told once by CNN), I really think that he is starting to sound a lot like a broken record in regards to flip-flopping (and by broken record, I mean John McCain). Gore and Edwards were no brainers, and I pretty much had to flip a coin to choose Prince Charles over Bono. Hopefully he’ll step it up this coming year since he’s already trying to start a feud wit Chris Martin, which should be fun to watch.

  32. 32 Meg B. Mar 17th, 2009 at 1:38 pm

Beijing for the under-age gymnist thing and Bono for being a turd.

  33. 33 kbug61 Mar 17th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

China, because I’m still feeling bad over that election-stealing thing. Oprah, because I still have hope. The Prince, because I can’t stand the pompous a**. Palin, because . . . well, frankly, she scares me.

  34. 34 California Dave Mar 17th, 2009 at 1:57 pm

    Gore, Obama, Bono, Edwards.

Because Jrod is right – they all suck.

  35. 35 Simon Scowl Mar 17th, 2009 at 2:02 pm

How are you guys liking Vice President of the United States Joe Biden so far?

  36. 36 Crow Jane Mar 17th, 2009 at 2:10 pm

Al Gore – Because he isn’t going away anytime soon.

Barack Obama – A vote for the former senator from Chicago, who isn’t afraid of a little snow and cold, except when he has to turn his thermostat up. Because he’s from Hawaii. But he isn’t a afraid of a little snow, because he’s from Chicago . . .

Bono – Because, uh, he’s Bono. He is the record.

John Edwards – Mr. Squeaky clean. The guy makes my skin crawl.

  37. 37 Menace Mar 17th, 2009 at 2:11 pm

Gore – Because he’s out to win every award in existence, so why not this?

Obama – I’ve never watched more than 30 seconds of Oprah. I can’t avoid Obama.

Bono – Prince Charles has shown his commitment to green issues by marrying a horse. What’s Bono done to rival that?

Edwards – No contest. Something both Americas can agree on.

  38. 38 angry army wife Mar 17th, 2009 at 2:25 pm

Biden? I don’t think much about him. He likes to stick his foot in his mouth a lot, which is laughable considering… I did not like him before, and I like him even less now.

  39. 39 luscious_t Mar 17th, 2009 at 2:36 pm

    Al was an easy vote~

Oprah got my points, as she claims to have “made” Obama~

I went Bono over Charlie because heads of state actually MEET with Bono – a *musician* – and give him a political voice when they really don’t have to~

and in the toughest bracket to decide…
I opted for Palin. As a woman, her hypocritical take on reproductive “choice” really ruffled my feathers. Plus, Edwards has it in the bag, anyways.

  40. 40 Amanda Mar 17th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

John Edwards came to one of my college classes years ago. He swore he would not be running for president, and even laughed at the question. Three weeks later, he announced his candidacy for the 2004 election. I can handle politicians that lie, but it stings a little more when it’s in person and to a room of 18-year-olds.

  41. 41 Swede0319 Mar 17th, 2009 at 2:58 pm

Gore: I want to kick him right in the nuts
Oprah: I want to kick her right in the nuts
Charlie: Anybody who can kiss/sleep with the English bulldog and keep from blowing chunks, should win.
Edwards: I want to kick him right in the nuts. Plus his hair is one of the wonders of the world.

  42. 42 Trey Mar 17th, 2009 at 3:04 pm

    1) TBOC. Really. A big helping of cheese and oppression.

    2) Oprah. Her audience of soccer moms in bimbo boxes is astounding, not to mention the whole car/tax thing. Boy, that would seriously tick me off.

    3) Bono. His music, like his message, seems old and stale. Apparently so old and stale that he can’t even keep his image from disintegrating anymore.

    4) Palin. She’s a zombie, we all know it, but it’s too late because she’s infected the populace already.

Biden I’m rating a zero on, other than being a good counterpart (theoretically) to Obama for voters in the SWM category. His wife has excellent fashion sense.

  43. 43 Pastafarian Mar 17th, 2009 at 4:01 pm

    GORE! GORE! GORE!

    Barack

    Chuck

PALIN! (Just kidding PJ I voted for Edwards.)

It’s too close between Gore and the other guy whoever it is. He’s just gotta win. I can’t believe there’s any doubt. If he loses I’ll make my own damn plaque and send it to him myself.

  44. 44 k80 Mar 17th, 2009 at 4:08 pm

Gore, Obama, Prince Charles, and Edwards. Nothing original in my reasoning for any of them.

  45. 45 Lynn Mar 17th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

Ok, so my husband just introduced me to this site and it’s too funny. Thanks for a good laugh!
    Here’s how I voted:
    Al Gore
    Obama
    Bono
    John Edwards
A few years back, I used to actually like Al Gore, strangely enough. I think I used to like Bono too. Funny how one grows older and wiser and more disillusioned.

  46. 46 Beige Mar 17th, 2009 at 4:11 pm

Gore, Bono, Obama, and Edwards. In each case, because either: a)I’ve had to listen to them/look at their stupid faces more than their competitors, or b)They’ve actually succeeded in screwing over more people than their competitors, or their screwery had greater devastating impact than their competitors’ did. For Oprah, it was a tough call, because she’s probably messed up a great many people–or rather, a great many people have allowed her to do so–but Obama won out in the end because his mendacity is going to end up hurting me and my family. You may not like Palin, but she’s not out cheating on a dying spouse and lying about it.

  47. 47 randomstalker Mar 17th, 2009 at 4:22 pm

    I voted for:

Al Gore – Because at least the Olympics were somewhat entertaining and the fake fireworks looked cool. It was a close call, though.

Oprah Winfrey – Because she’s been around for longer than Obama, and we’re likely to still have her around after 4 – 8 years.

Bono – Because Prince Charles is, well, a prince. You can’t really expect him to have much common sense. Poor man’s probably never learned how to do anything for himself in his life, how can we expect him NOT to fly around in big expensive environment-killing airplanes?

Sarah Palin – Because of the whole clothes scandal. Don’t get me wrong, what John Edwards did was bad. But Sarah Palin’s hypocrisy was more fun to read about for some reason.

  48. 48 weyes Mar 17th, 2009 at 4:45 pm

wow – this poll reminded me of how right-wing this site is.

anyway, i think the choices here were obvious:

beijing games – the ultimate display of irony
oprah – phony who spawned fellow phony, dr. phil
bono – we all should save the world AND lots of money for concert tickets
palin – abstinence education works!* (*not applicable to your own kids)

  49. 49 Simon Scowl Mar 17th, 2009 at 4:52 pm

wow – this poll reminded me of how right-wing this site is.

    tips@deceiver.com

  50. 50 Beige Mar 17th, 2009 at 5:09 pm

Simon, those who screech “Right-wing” every time one of their idols gets caught being hypocritical aren’t susceptible to reason. A two-second glance at the site would reveal that there’s room here for skewering right-wing hypocrisy too, but all they can see is that someone they revere got caught lying.

Because y’all are out there, heavily armed, FORCING celebrities to commit acts of base mendacity. Admit it: You, personally, wrenched Alec Baldwin and Gwyneth Paltrow away from the donor queue at the Red Cross, and DEMANDED that they say and do pathetically stupid and duplicitous things, on pain of death. YOU DID IT.

  51. 51 Nick Mar 17th, 2009 at 5:14 pm

I voted strait Democrat with Gore, Obama, and Edwards.

  52. 52 ganzagwenie Mar 17th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

Beijing – for reasons that have nothing to do with the olympics… basically, I’m annoyed that the Chinese keep telling the US to save money.
Oprah – I seem to remember her claiming that she was going to retire in 2009… whatever happened to that promise?
Bono – I hate his dumb glasses.
Palin – I guess this vote is about as close as I’m going to get to blasphemy on this site

  53. 53 Scott F. Mar 17th, 2009 at 5:17 pm

“wow – this poll reminded me of how right-wing this site is.”

I’ve long wondered why this site seems to have a right-wing slant to it, and then a comment from a lefty on here a few weeks ago solved it for me. We were criticizing Obama for blatantly lying during the campaign, and her comment was that ‘well, all politicians are liars.’ That’s when it all came together for me.

This site isn’t right-wing, it simply attracts more from the right than the left because well… Democrats EXPECT their politicians to be lying douches. It’s kinda hard to call them on something you knew to be the case before you even voted for them. And as long as their lies continue to benefit their constituents while boning faceless millionaires under the table, their supporters will continue to ignore it, or fail to give a shit.

I also love all the Democratic women who love to talk about Palin. “Well, as a woman, she pisses me off because…” They then inevitably say that she should shut her mouth and take care of her children. My, how VERY progressive of you Democrats. A woman’s place is at home, barefoot and caring for her kids? Would you make comments like that if the politician was male? Last time I checked, Obama has two daughters that are very young and at a stage where they will crave large amounts of parental attention – funny how no one told him to stay home and watch his kids. I never thought I’d have to say this, but Democrats, take your sexism and shove it. Either that, or go back in time and tell Hillary to go home and watch Chelsea.

Anyways – lets veer away from commenter hypocrisy and get on to the actual votes for the contest.

Al Gore – because I spent my winter shoveling multiple feet of snow off of my driveway. When exactly is this global warming coming to Indianapolis dumbass?

Obama – Because his weakness is going to cost this country BIG very soon.

Bono – because there isn’t a bigger douche on that side of the pond.

Edwards – because he’s that special kind of liar that won’t come clean even after you’ve caught them red handed. I call that the ‘bloody glove’ type liar. They’re incredibly rare, and their mating call is ‘See!? It doesn’t fit!”

  54. 54 weyes Mar 17th, 2009 at 5:33 pm

i sent in a very well-written piece on lou dobbs a while ago and it got totally ignored. give me a break on telling me that this site isn’t biased. o, and i did a search on lou dobbs yesterday, too; if this site were on the level politically, he would be all over it.

and even disregarding that, if you were to take a poll on the USERS of this site, with people only able to vote once, i can GUARANTEE that more of them would be republicans; even if the admins claim not to be, the users are. and if users supply the tips, then you do the math.

  55. 55 Eve Mar 17th, 2009 at 5:35 pm

Beijing, Obama, Charles, and Edwards. Though it was close on all of them.

  56. 56 tim maguire Mar 17th, 2009 at 5:41 pm

Gore–because everybody knows what China’s about

Obama, because Oprah isn’t president, she’s just a talk show host.

Prince Charles, because I think Bono is entirely sincere

Edwards–k (near the top) almost had me with his expanation that Palin isn’t barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen like a good woman should be, but I went with Edwards anyway because he’s John “There’re Two Americas and They’ll Both Fit in my Mansion” Edwards.

  57. 57 weyes Mar 17th, 2009 at 5:47 pm

o, and about palin, to scott f. -

you don’t know why i hate palin, so stop assuming you do. i have lots of reasons, but i’ll just give you the one that condradicts the one you stated above: i don’t think she should be “at home… caring for her kids.” i think women should do whatever the hell they want. stay home, don’t. i don’t care. but in general i think it’s people’s responsibility to have fewer children; the world is overpopulated. i think it’s selfish and disgusting to have 5 kids. i have no idea where you got the idea that “democratic women” think that women should be “home, barefoot…”; that’s more of a republican line of thought.

  58. 58 the Dee Man Mar 17th, 2009 at 5:54 pm

Hypocrites need to have the capability to see that their views are conflicted. I think there is a difference between the duplicity involved in the deceptions of Al Gore and Barack Obama, and the obliviousness of Kutcher and McCartney. Politicians are generally manipulators. Actors and musicians usually can’t see past the next page of script or next tune on the play list.

  59. 59 Beige Mar 17th, 2009 at 5:55 pm

I’ve sent in tips that ALSO didn’t get used; so what? So send in some info on some conservative hypocrites. Seriously. Simon provided the email address, above. Use it. Put up or shut up. This pissing and moaning about how we’re all a bunch of hood-wearing fanatics doesn’t wash; YOUR comments are getting through, aren’t they? Your dissent isn’t being stifled, is it?

  60. 60 Scott F. Mar 17th, 2009 at 5:56 pm

“but in general i think it’s people’s responsibility to have fewer children; the world is overpopulated. i think it’s selfish and disgusting to have 5 kids”

    Prove it.

I know that’s not something Democrats worry about a whole lot, but I’m not dumb enough to assume that just because you type something up, it’s true (even if it was so important to you that you couldn’t take the time to properly punctuate). See, if you have an attention span longer than a nano-second, you would realize that dumbasses have been screaming about overpopulation since the 60’s!

Ever seen Soylent Green? We were supposed to be so polluted and overpopulated by the turn of the century we would be eating each other! Here’s the problem though – medical and agricultural technology have kept pace with the population. You can feed three times as many people per acre of crops that you could just over 2 decades ago. See, those of us in ‘flyover country’ (you know, where the food you buy at the market is actually grown/raised) we understand these things.

What proof do you have that we’re overpopulated? That people are starving? People have been starving somewhere since the dawn of time, have we always been overpopulated? I want more than your word for it, I want PROOF. Because I know it’s bullshit, I’ve looked into it for myself. And seeing as how that is the primary (seemingly only) reason for your dislike of Palin, that would mean your dislike is based on complete bullshit. Color me shocked.

  61. 61 Simon Scowl Mar 17th, 2009 at 6:06 pm

i think it’s selfish and disgusting to have 5 kids.

    But enough about John Edwards.

  62. 62 Simon Scowl Mar 17th, 2009 at 6:09 pm

i sent in a very well-written piece on lou dobbs a while ago and it got totally ignored.

This made me curious, so I did an e-mail search. After re-reading the e-mail in question, from June of last year, I can confirm that Weyes is half-right.

  63. 63 Simon Scowl Mar 17th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

That probably wasn’t very nice. In the interest of fairness, I’ll reproduce the e-mail here and allow anybody who’s scrolled down this far in the thread to decide for themselves:

hey, deceiver, i’ve got a hypocrite for you.

lou dobbs was going on one of his daily angry rants against companies that outsource, the loss of american jobs, and mexican illegal aliens the other day on lou dobbs tonight – no surprise, since he devotes most of his show to those 3 topics every night. [no, i don't know that 'cause i'm a fan, i just happen to keep unfortunately turning on cnn when his show is on! it reruns a lot, too...] what was different during the other night’s broadcast, however, was that he was waving around a particular BIC ballpoint pen that i happened to recognize, ’cause it’s the kind that my office buys in bulk. it made me wonder…

and yep – it’s made in mexico. i guess he thinks acting angry on television does enough to save american jobs.

I wonder if it’s too late to drop this bombshell?

  64. 64 jr565 Mar 17th, 2009 at 6:33 pm

    weyes wrote:

I’ll echo what Scott F said, but simply add, thats not even an example of hypocricy on Palin’s part. Hypocricy would be saying we should have less kids and then turning around and having a bunch of kids with different families that noone knew about. And what is the ideal number of kids for you? Is Obama’s two daughters not selfish but five kids is? Where’s your cutoff point?

  65. 65 John Skookum Mar 17th, 2009 at 6:39 pm

The same catty bitches who think Sarah Palin is a hypocrite for temporarily borrowing a lot of expensive clothes from the RNC — and no, she didn’t go shopping for them herself — would have been first in line with even more catty, bitchy comments if she had worn her usual backwoodsy wardrobe on the campaign trail.

  66. 66 Pastafarian Mar 17th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

“Funny how one grows older and wiser and more disillusioned.”

What’s the old saying? “You become more conservative once you actually have something to conserve”

    Or something like that.

  67. 67 WMD Mar 17th, 2009 at 7:20 pm

    My votes where as follows:

On the first The Chinese Olympic committee over Al Gore and admittedly it was a hard choice. I’d say that the Olympic committee in this one case far outdid Gore.

On the second it was Barack Obama was a no brainer. And his recent track record hammers the point and to top it off he’s a populist. Oprah is not much more than an entertainer.

On the third Prince Charles is a classic example although in this case it was a hard pick between him and Bono.

As for the fourth no contest Edwards after last year revelations Sarah Palin would really have to work hard to match him really hard.

  68. 68 MariettaJim Mar 17th, 2009 at 7:22 pm

    Al Gore.
The Beijing Olympics are a one time excess. Al Gore will be forever, if he succeeds.

    Obama.
Oprah doesn’t have the power and capabilities for mischief that Obama has.

    Charles.
While both the Prince and Bono spend a lot of time wandering the globe on private airplanes polluting and increasing the CO2 levels while spouting overwrought doom, I think the Prince wins out overall.

    Edwards.
Ms. Palin is a mere shadow of Edwards hypocrisy.

  69. 69 weyes Mar 17th, 2009 at 8:00 pm

Ouch. :( This got mean. I think I should take my toys and go home. But not before I tell you…
Al Gore. China has pandas, and OMG! WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE!! anyways.
Oprah. She’s had more time. Obama’s not got the chops.
Prince “Let them eat crumpets.” Charles.
Edwards. I just didn’t have the heart to vote for Palin, have her win the bracket and get a certificate, and see her poor heart break when someone explained what it is that she’s “won.” Awww. :(

  71. 71 The Den Mother Mar 17th, 2009 at 8:07 pm

I was clearly in the minority voting for the Beijing Olympics over the Goracle. It was close, but I figure that at least Gore doesn’t imprison political opponents. Yet.

  72. 72 Hjay Mar 17th, 2009 at 8:41 pm

Mr. Gore, Mr. Obama, Prince Charles, and Mr. Edwards all got my vote. I think that Mr. Gore is going to go all the way.

  73. 73 Fortunate_Son Mar 17th, 2009 at 8:41 pm

Johnny Boy sure let us know which of the “two Americas” he lived in.

The kind where deadbeat dads cheat on their dying wives all the while pretending to be our moral superiors.

May your career rest with Fred Baron, Johnny Boy.

  74. 74 k Mar 17th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Barefoot, pregnant, in the kitchen? Not *quite* what I meant… :)

I meant that while many women can juggle careers and family, in this *particular* case it seemed that she was saving the world but losing her own family. I’ve seen that happen to a lot of people…they get so busy with their “causes” and their “agendas” that they don’t see their own families self-destructing.

  75. 75 Chronic Malanga Mar 17th, 2009 at 9:18 pm

Excellent response to weyes, Scott F. I have to still get around to reading all of these, but it’s going to wait till tomorrow. I just had to get that out there.

You know, I have sent in a bunch of tips, weyes, but they don’t necessarily get used. I can count one or two that were. I’m not moaning about it, nor do I care. If I see something of interest, I send it in, and sometimes I don’t because chances are, it will already be posted by the time I pop in to read stuff.I don’t do it to get my own personal agendas across, as you seem bent on doing.

If calling everyone a Republican is the best you can come up with, then you need to try a little harder.

BTW, I am a regular reader/commenter who never had and never will have a political affiliation. So you’ve pegged at least one person wrong.

  76. 76 Simon Scowl Mar 17th, 2009 at 9:20 pm

  77. 77 Kristine Mar 17th, 2009 at 9:33 pm

Why is it that when liberals’ children do something contrary to their parents’ beliefs (unless you’re telling me Gore is pro-pot and prescription drug abuse) it’s just them making a mistake and branching out and having learning experiences on the way to reaching enlightenment… but when a conservative’s kid does something contrary to their parents’ beliefs (Bristol foolishly not following the abstinence message… which believe it or not is possible to follow) it’s Sarah’s fault?!?! Liberals are just bitter she’s overpopulating by not having killed him.

That said, Jrod was right and pithy… except for I went with the Prince, instead of Bono.

  78. 78 Scott F. Mar 17th, 2009 at 9:48 pm

k – I apologize if you feel I painted you with too broad a brush there. In case you haven’t picked up on it yet, I find hyperbole and exaggeration to be useful tools in debate. This sometimes causes me to paint others unfairly, which I really try not to do.

I point this out because people like weyes constantly try to paint me as something I’m not – namely Republican. I am a registered Libertarian who votes Republican because they’re the only ones I trust on national defense, which in my opinion as a Libertarian is one of the very few things the federal government should be involved in.

I’m also not a slobbering Palin fanatic. I hate all kinds of politicians, and I encourage everyone else to do the same. I just feel that if you’re going to rip on someone, you should at least be able to cite one cogent argument for feeling that way. Preferably one that you’ve researched for yourself, and not been fed by propaganda teams for either side.

I guess the Palin critics piss me off because 95% of their critiques are based on bullshit elitism. If Democrats want to hold on to their grip on government, they had better learn really quick that when they rip on people like Sarah Palin for being a redneck, they’re alienating a very large section of the population. It’s very chic to make fun of Walmart and country music – but there’s also no denying that they are respectively the most popular names in their fields by a huge margin. I mean, I shop at Walmart and probably a fourth of my music catalog is country, but I doubt anyone would accuse me of being ignorant or uneducated.

As Chronic pointed out, trying to peg people down politically is really hard, as most people don’t even agree with their own identified political party on every issue. I apologize if I pegged you incorrectly.

  79. 79 Beige Mar 17th, 2009 at 9:53 pm

Wow. I’m cut to the quick because a tool called us all “morons”. Wait…No, I’m not.

k, while I see your point, I have to disagree. I’m not laboring under the delusion that Sarah Palin hung the moon or anything, but at some point, it gets sort of tough to hold a mother responsible for what her young-adult kids say or do. (And yes, Bristol at 17 was not legally an adult, but come on–do you know any 17-year-old girls who are in lockstep with their mothers, on ANYTHING? I sure don’t.)

  80. 80 lumpy Mar 17th, 2009 at 9:55 pm

Let’s see, one of Palin’s kids messes up, and that makes Palin a hypocrite? Hmm, k, what you’re saying sounds a whole lot like ’she should be home, barefoot, and pregnant.’ I mean, why shouldn’t Todd be home more? Why is it the woman who should be home more?

Weyes, I think the world’s current population is fine, and I hope to add to it. Starvation, BTW, is a result of kleptocracies, not a lack of food in general. Besides, this is a poll on hypocrites, not on people you think are evil. There are actually people out there a lot more evil than Palin, as hard as you may find that to believe.

Anyway, if you want more Republican hypocrites, start with McCain, then all the ones who cried out for small government and voted for big government. Of course, for Dems, all of Obama’s cabinet picks who haven’t paid their taxes. After all, now we know why Dem politicians don’t mind raising taxes — They don’t pay them!

  81. 81 Simon Scowl Mar 17th, 2009 at 10:25 pm

I don’t know about you guys, but I was waiting to find out why Palin’s 5 kids trump Edwards’ 5 kids. (Although in his defense, only 4 of those were with his wife.) Guess now we’ll never know.

  82. 82 Poobah Mar 17th, 2009 at 10:51 pm

It is funny that people mention Palin’s daughter getting knocked up as a cause to vote for her. Didn’t John knock up some chick while his wife was dealing with cancer and then lie about it? How does that even compare?

  83. 83 Nati Mar 17th, 2009 at 11:15 pm

I voted for Gore, Obama, Prince Charles and John Edwards. I really hope Gore wins this thing. It will probably go down between Gore and Obama in the end. But actually, if you live where I live, it’s not that hard to believe that global warming is real. Snowstorm one day, 70 degrees (outside) the next…ftl.

  84. 84 Koka Mar 17th, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Al Gore………I’d like to set him on an iceberg and watch it melt and dump his @$$ into 30* ocean water.

Obama……… he changed, alright. And how.

Bono………he refuses to practice what he preaches to us. I have a hard time doing what someone else tells me to do if they won’t do it themselves. That’s peonage.

Edwards…….because he’d still be lying if his butt hadn’t gotten caught.

  85. 85 milk 'em Mar 17th, 2009 at 11:51 pm

Holy crap! Never in my lifetime did I think I’d have the opportunity to vote for Al Gore AND John Edwards AND Obama on the same day. Gore/Edwards matchup in the Elite Eight? Too close to call. too bad Obama is going to get knocked out in the next round. He should have been seeded in the Stars & Starlets bracket for a decent chance, or at least a trip to the Final Four.

  86. 86 Fred Savage Mar 18th, 2009 at 12:14 am

Gore – Mr. “The science is settled so there is no reason for me to debate”

Obama – Bashing AIG execs for taking Bonuses that were explicitly guaranteed in HIS stimulus plan and then forgetting he himself took money from them… No way Oprah can compare to this.

Bono – Do as I say not as I do… you know, cause Im a rock star

Edwards – Because it takes a special kind of ass to cheat on a dying wife while using her as a campaign tactic. Thankfully he got caught.

  87. 87 Fortunate_Son Mar 18th, 2009 at 3:53 am

His own self-loathing hypocrisy left him no Weyes out.

  88. 88 Elle Mar 18th, 2009 at 4:51 am

Al Gore: WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE FROM GLOBAL WARMING!! So everyone lower your carbon footprint. But don’t mind the private jet and huge waste from my giant house.

Obama: He pushed hard on ACORN which is the policy that led to the whole housing bubble. Plus letting the horking pile of crap that is the stimulus package sit on his desk for three days after urging that we had mere hours to get the damn thing through OR WE’LL ALL GOINING TO BE BEGGING IN THE STREET!!! And whole flinty Chicogian vs orchid-like Hawaiian thing.

Bono: Speaking of horking piles of crap . . .

Edwards: Pretty much a ditto to Fred Savage above there

  89. 89 katie Mar 18th, 2009 at 5:43 am

al gore, oprah, prince charles, palin!

  90. 90 Loop the Lup Mar 18th, 2009 at 6:48 am

    The way I went …

Al Gore Takes on All of China: At least China doesn’t pretend to be the good guy, outside of their own nation.

O vs. O.: This was interesting, seeing as part of me sees them as a team of unprepared emperor and sniveling vizier. And both of them have shown an impressive sway over their respective fanbases. But while Oprah can parlay that into massive book-club deals, Obama used it to put himself in the prime world spotlight – a spotlight with a 72-degree thermostat. And as someone whose every press release seems to send the economy into another tizzy, Obama seems like the more dangerous one.

The Clash of the Men Without Last Names: Prince Charles seems (to me, anyway) like any late-middle-aged parent trying desperately to seem “hip” to the young people, but having no idea how to do it. Bono, on the other hand, just doesn’t seem to give a flying flip.

Battle of the Prospective Veeps: Reading through the comments on the Palin articles tends to show things being a bit better than what they look like. Edwards, on the other hand … did father the kid and try not to let anyone know about it.

  91. 91 muppet2171 Mar 18th, 2009 at 8:39 am

    China, Oprah, Bono, Palin.

China because they made a plain looking girl feel even worse.
    Oprah just because
    Bono just because
    Palin because she’s an idiot.

Thank you and have a nice day.

  92. 92 k Mar 18th, 2009 at 10:41 am

Wow. Didn’t mean to start a fight!

For the most part, the seeds for our actions (no pun intended) are planted long before the action takes place. Perhaps if Palin had been more tuned into what was going on in her daughter’s life, maybe, just maybe, things would have been different. And then again, maybe not. But we won’t know now, will we?

And no, for God’s sake, I don’t mean women should be barefoot and pregnant and not work outside the home. My own mother works outside the home. So did my stepmother and my grandmother and many women I admire. Many women do and things work out just fine; nobody can be painted with a broad brush. What I am trying to point out is that with the obligations and stresses involved with being a Governor and, for a while, a VP candidate, did Palin really, realistically, have time to be a mom too? Bookshelves are bulging with tell-all books of adult children of famous people who felt their parents’ career came before their children, and the kids felt left out. So can we truly do it all and do it all well? I mean, it’s just my thoughts and my opinions; if others hold different ones, well, that’s fine too. That’s why I love America; I can disagree, you can disagree, and no secret police are going to take us away. :)

btw, I have teenagers, one almost an adult, so I kinda know about them.

  93. 93 k Mar 18th, 2009 at 10:58 am

    To further clarify:

I realize there are kids who will do stuff like this regardless of who is home and who is not home. Some kids are just wired that way. I know I got in my share of trouble and it wouldn’t have mattered if my mom was home or not.

And I fully realize some moms *have* to work; it is that or starve. In today’s economy it’s tough on just one paycheck; being a single mom would make it much harder. Single moms who juggle it all have my undying respect (my own mom was one).

I’m talking about Sarah Palin and that situation only.

Didn’t mean to start a fight; probably won’t post again about it so fire away! :)

  94. 94 Chronic Malanga Mar 18th, 2009 at 11:27 am

I thought I would clarify my problem with Palin and Bristol, because in the end, it’s not even a problem I have with them, but the media in general.

Jamie Lynn Spears and her waste of a mother were all but tarred and feathered when JLS got knocked up. I’m not a fan of either, and I am the first to say that Lynn Spears is only a slightly better mother than Dina Lohan, which means I would rather have a pack of wolves babysit my neice or nephew than either of them.

Yet, Bristol gets pregnant, and a lot of the same people (Bill O’Reilly comes to mind, but several others), were so much more forgiving, understanding, and all this when Palin belongs to a political party that brought us the futility of abstinence only education. And yes, I realize now that Palin herself is not necessarily in line with that view, but no one dared question Palin’s parenting as loud. Heck, even Juno, a fictional character, took more crap from the media.

I don’t necessarily believe that pregnant teens are a result of bad parenting. Sometimes, yes, it is, but other times the stupidity in getting pregnant at 17 falls squarely on the the kid in question despite the parents’ best efforts.

But even so, that situation with Bristol kind of chapped my hide.

That said, I don’t have an issue with the Palin pregnancy so much anymore because Simon pointed out that she is not a supporter of abstinence only education. I even got a big laugh over Turkey-gate, which I wanted to high five her for. I do have issues with the clothing thing, and more superficially, her annoying voice. I swear the next time I hear anyone say, “You betcha,” I will kick them in the teeth.

Even so, I regret not voting for Edwards when he and Palin went head to head here. He really deserved the vote and I didn’t think it through. Oh well, I’m glad he won that one by a landslide, as it’s the only thing he deserves to win.
