Scarlett Johansson’s Curves Just Got Less Dangerous

scarjo_weightlossDefamer has some interesting before-and-after shots of Scarlett Johansson, who seems to have pulled a Jennifer Love Hewitt and lost substantial weight after complaining about Hollywood’s diet obsession.

Here’s ScarJo in 2006:

“I try to stay fit and eat healthily, but I’m not anxious to starve myself and become unnaturally thin. I don’t find that look attractive on women and I don’t want to become part of that trend. It’s unhealthy and it puts too much pressure on women in general who are being fed this image of the ideal, which it is not.

“I think America has become obsessed with dieting rather than focusing on eating well, exercising and living a healthy life. I also think that being ultra-thin is not sexy at all. Women shouldn’t be forced to conform to unrealistic and unhealthy body images that the media promote. I don’t need to be skinny to be sexy.”

And then on Tuesday, according to a source tattling on her to Page Six:

“She was talking to Thandie Newton about the rigid diet she’s on,” our spy said of the star of the upcoming “Iron Man 2.” Joseph Fiennes, Eva Herzigova and Marc Newson were all there and ogling Johansson, who “was really working it,” according to our snitch.

These photos don’t lie. In the new photo (on the left), she’s not in scary skinny territory yet, but girlfriend has definitely dropped a dress size or two — her jawline is sharper and her arms look more lean. And someone’s let the air out of her chest. But I’m sure that didn’t pass most of you by.

Still, isn’t there ANYBODY in Hollywood who is secure enough not to give in to the pressure? I really thought Kate Winslet might be the one, but I was wrong there too.

Do they ever learn not to discuss this sort of thing at all, so that when they do lose or gain dramatically, they won’t appear here? Of course, where would the fun be for us then?

  2. 2 California Dave Mar 26th, 2009 at 1:38 pm

Someone needs to tell these folks that you CAN have a few extra pounds and still be healthy.

But I’m betting Jrod would still hit it.

  3. 3 Jrod Mar 26th, 2009 at 1:45 pm

I would hit it. I would time machine that and have a 3 some if possible…

I need to have my eyeballs recalibrated. I kinda forgot what Scarlett looked like. So, I thought it was two different ladies, due to the faces looking a little different. But assuming they were the same, even after trying to take in account the different hair colors and style, I still wasn’t sure.

So, assuming they’re both SJ, I thought in the right picture that her face looked just a tad thinner, but the left side’s arms might be a wee bit slimmer, maybe it’s the lighting. Then upon rereading Holly’s comment, “letting the air out”, it’s hard to see curves in a black dress, and I bet it doesn’t have the boosting feature the lighter dress appears to have…still wasn’t sure.

So, I went to Defamer – and they claim the left is the more recent (Tuesday) picture, compared to May 2008 on the right.

Why on earth would you put the newer picture on the left? That’s just not right.

Hollywood ladies – you look like ten year old boys or Chinese Olympic gymnasts. Healthy female body fat is 20-30% . That means you have boobs and hips.

  6. 6 Holly Won't Mar 26th, 2009 at 2:11 pm

I can see how that’s confusing, Les Paul. Thanks for the idea — I revised my post for clarity.

  7. 7 StrawberryGirl Mar 26th, 2009 at 2:15 pm

She’s had work done. Probably removed fat from her face, had a breast reduction, and some lipo as well. She’s probably on this crazy diet in order to keep her new size.

  8. 8 ganzagwenie Mar 26th, 2009 at 2:38 pm

Am I the only one who thinks she looks the same (weight wise)? Its a little hard to tell because of the black dress on the black background, but her boobs look the same, just not shoved up in a bustier.

  9. 9 k80 Mar 26th, 2009 at 2:45 pm

I don’t see a whole lot of difference either. Darker, more flattering clothes and hair color can make anyone look a bit slimmer. The arms look about the same to me, and her jaw is in a different position. The cut on the light colored dress is awful, and not flattering on anyone. I’m not sure about this one.

    Notice which one is smiling.

  11. 11 coco ebert Mar 26th, 2009 at 3:03 pm

Um, you don’t see the actresses that don’t succumb to the mad dieting because they wouldn’t get any roles. I’m sure a lot of them don’t want to go that route, but they also want to work.

  12. 12 Minnow Mar 26th, 2009 at 3:13 pm

She’s on a hunger strike until Obama gives her the new blackberry number.

  13. 13 darek Mar 26th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

This may, MAY, be a trick on the eyes because of what she was wearing.

In the “after” photo Black, as most people know, is naturally slimming, her hair is pushed away from her face, and her darker hair doesn’t blend into her lighter skin tone, which *could* make it look like she’s thinner when she’s in fact not (Sorry Holly, I can’t really see a difference in her arms). She’s not smiling making her face look sunken-in.

In the “before” photo, her blond hair is in her face, and because she’s has a light complexion, this could make it look like her face is fuller than it really is (blond hair on white skin doesn’t provide a clear “cut” to where the skin ends and where the hairline begins). The dress is white, which does not make one appear slimmer. The dress itself has a corset in it, which pushes the boobage up higher than it would naturally be, giving the appearance of much larger knockers than one may have AND the dress itself poofs from the navel down. She’s also smiling, giving her some chipmunk-esque cheeks and making it appear she has a fuller face.

The reason why I’m coming to her defense (NOT a fan of hers, especially after she stole Ryan Reynolds away from straight women and gay men around the world) is the collar bone. When actresses/starlettes/celebutards go for that Nicole Richie/Mary-Kate Olsen look, their collar bones look like they’re going to break the surface. In both those photos, her collar bone looks pretty much the same, giving me the impression she’s probably roughly the same weight in both photos.

And now to find images of Ryan Reynolds *smile*

  14. 14 darek Mar 26th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

Oh and the fact that “sources” told what “they” overheard just fills me with doubt.

  15. 15 Holly Won't Mar 26th, 2009 at 3:39 pm

Could be, Darek. Although the color of the fabric doesn’t matter as much when you have two side-by-side photos — it’s not like wearing white somehow makes your waist thicker. And the fact she’s in a corset in photo #2 and yet her waist is slimmer in #1 leads me to believe she’s lost an inch or two there.

  16. 16 Nati Mar 26th, 2009 at 3:45 pm

She did lose weight…but mostly in her boobs :( teh boobies are gone, teh boobies are gone :( *cries*

  17. 17 darek Mar 26th, 2009 at 4:30 pm

    Holly

Her waist may *seem* thicker, but look at where her arm is resting – in the black dress, I’m assuming that’s where her hips are. In the white dress, I’m guessing she’s putting her hand there because of the design of the dress. My point is you can’t necessarily tell where her waist is in the white dress, so you cant compare it to the black dress. It also doesn’t help that the background is dark when she’s wearing the black dress, she does kind of blend into it.

Also that hedious white puffy number can make it appear her waist (wherever it is) is larger than it actually is.

Find me a picture of her in a bathing suit from one era and now and then we can really get crackin’!

(I feel like I’m on CSI, dissecting this photo as much as I have)

    For reals, yo.

  19. 19 This Guy Mar 26th, 2009 at 4:32 pm

When did having breasts fall out of fashion? And why wasn’t I and everyone I’ve ever met informed?

  20. 20 HeatherRadish Mar 26th, 2009 at 5:12 pm

Breasts seem to be OK as long as they’re carefully arranged bags of saline and not *eew* body fat.

  21. 21 katie Mar 26th, 2009 at 7:17 pm

shes almost in bobble head territory now!

  22. 22 Nicole Mar 26th, 2009 at 7:50 pm

I really was struggling to see any significant difference in weight (agree with posts 8 and 9).

  23. 23 Troy Mar 26th, 2009 at 8:16 pm

She looks shorter in the black dress…

  24. 24 Rocko Mar 26th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

    Iron Man 2?

But on topic, she still looks good. I like the “new” Scarlett because I prefer darker hair. I can’t tell the difference in boobs mainly because one photo is with a corset (hot!!) and one without (not so hot). Obviously to resolve this, we need more photos.

  25. 25 Les Paul Mar 26th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

Holly, I was really just going for some word play in my last sentence.

And “you” in the last sentence was meant to be generic, not towards you, since you were simply borrowing their pictures…but meant as in “why would anyone” — just in case, you know, you were wondering.

Man, I thought “I” was overanalyzing – but darek said what I was going to – about bones breaking the surface and all – both pix look the same in that regard. But you did say “she’s not in scary skinny territory yet”.

    Looks like you’ve started ScarlettWatch-2009.

  26. 26 Kristine Mar 26th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

Maybe she’ll go so far she’ll just disappear… I would like that.

While black can be slimming, I still agree that her waist looks thicker in the corset, which can’t be a good sign. Although I also agree with whoever it was that said her face looks slimmer in the older picture. Probably the dimples or something. Huh.

  27. 27 Catharine Mar 26th, 2009 at 9:51 pm

I feel ya, Holly. She looks like a curvy bombshell in the white dress, all smiling and happy and sexy. In the black dress, she’s beginning to look concave and hollowed out. Not to mention miserable and oddly waxy. To me, the facial expression says it all. It’s hard to imagine the girl in the black dress being so happy and confident, probably becasue she’s being pressured into losing weight and has lower self-confidence.

  28. 28 cavefish Mar 26th, 2009 at 9:54 pm

I honest to goodness can’t see a weight difference in these photos. Arm thickness, face fat are the same in my view, and I’m cant get a good view of boobs or waist because of the black dress and black background. And really, why do we care? (yet here I am, defending her anyway…)

  29. 29 Nati Mar 26th, 2009 at 11:35 pm

Her boobs are the only thing I like about her. The first time I actually noticed their awesomeness was when I was watching “Matchpoint”. Didn’t care much for Scarlett prior to seeing that movie. I watched that “Boleyn girl” crappy excuse for a movie like 5 times already…all of them with a mute button on. The movie is an epic fail, but it offers some epic cleavage (and you know I’m not talking about Natalie Portman). So she’d better realize that her boobs are pretty much all she has to offer and not lose any more weight. And I’m not feeling that hair color either – not a good look for her. Pseudo-goth/pseudo-emo…she kinda looks like Evan Rachel Wood in the pic on the left. Not a good look :( I want my boobies back, boobies back, boobies back…

Her arm looks almost the same to me. But, that also isn’t the first spot where you loose fat – it’s the breast.
The thing is, she’s loosing weight for her role in Iron Man 2, as she is the Black Widow. A highly trained russian spy. She’s sexy, of course. But since S.J. with her normal (and absolutely gorgeous) figure just doesn’t come across as someone who is trained to climb walls. I’m NOT saying she’s unfit – just that she has so train a bit for her role. Hence the weightloss.
If I’m wrong, then it’s a shame. I thought she wouldn’t be so stupid. I hope I’m right, and she’ll have those curves back when shooting’s over.

  33. 33 luscious_t Mar 27th, 2009 at 12:39 pm

I find the most amusing part of these weight loss stories is that more often than not, the “Before’ is way hotter.

As is the case here. Waaaay hotter.

  34. 34 Runolfr Mar 27th, 2009 at 1:26 pm

I’m not noticing a wholehelluvalotta difference between these images. Due to her dress color and the background color, you can’t tell much about here in the newer picture, but what you can see looks pretty much the same. I think the extra cleavage in the older one can be chalked up to the corset. Diet or no, the pictures don’t provide any evidence.

  35. 35 Rocko Mar 27th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

    Nati’s got the right idea.

  36. 36 Nati Mar 28th, 2009 at 12:12 am

Her boobs are the only two things I like about her *fixed*

  37. 37 Michael Almandine Mar 28th, 2009 at 4:32 am

Worry not, like most chicks who get skinny it wont last. Funny thing is that when i first saw her in “Eight legged Freaks” i thought, “Aw, what a cute little kiddie. She’s gonna grow up to be a gorgeous woman.” She didnt.

  38. 38 RaraAvis Mar 28th, 2009 at 10:59 pm

I believe she is dieting for a movie role and not because she feels she is fat. Isn’t she supposed to be playing some sort of superhero in an upcoming film?

  39. 39 Ro Apr 9th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

These images show the same body type. The more defined jawline you mention is hidden behind her hair in the before picture.

Unfortunately in all the hype of celebrities with eating disorders, America has forgotten that between malnutrition and obesity is muscular tone & thinness, as these images show. It is achieved through healthy eating & exercise, not starvation.

isn’t there ANYBODY in Hollywood who is secure enough not to give in to the pressure?

Sure there are, it’s just that most of them don’t get as much (or ANY) positive attention:

Aretha Franklin, Queen Latifah, Camryn Manheim, Kathy Bates, Delta Burke, Kirstie Alley, Emme, Mo’Nique, Toccara Jones, Roseanne, Rosie O’Donnell, Mia Tyler, Jennifer Hudson, America Ferrera, Nikki Blonsky, Della Reese, Elaine Miles (from CBS-TV’s Northern Exposure), Cheryl Haworth (Olympic weightlifter),…
