As ever, feel free to take this with a grain of salt because it comes from the National Enquirer. But just remember that they’re the only reason we even know about this story. Last summer they did the hard reporting and kept on Edwards about it, despite his non-denial denials and weeks of stonewalling from the “legitimate” press.
End of disclaimer. Here it is:
Multiple sources now confirm The ENQUIRER’s report that a federal grand jury is investigating possible misuse of presidential campaign funds by John Edwards to pay off his mistress.
U.S. Attorney George Holding revealed yesterday he “was not going to confirm or deny any investigation” regarding Edwards that was first reported by the ENQUIRER earlier this week.
A Federal grand jury did convene on Wednesday in Raleigh, North Carolina, according to multiple local reports. Grand jury proceedings are kept secret. Attorneys are liable for criminal prosecution if they discuss such investigations in public or to the press…
Last summer, the NATIONAL ENQUIRER caught Edwards visiting his mistress Rielle Hunter in the Beverly Hills Hilton. After vigorously denying the affair for months, Edwards admitted the affair on national television in August after the ENQUIRER published spy photos of Edwards holding his love child earlier that week.
Edwards has also denied paying either campaign staffer Andrew Young, who claims to be the child’s father or Rielle Hunter, his admitted mistress, any funds from the campaign war chest. Fred Baron, a longtime Edwards supporter, claimed to have provided the hush money. Baron died last fall.
Elizabeth’s book is coming out next month, right? Maybe this will be an appendix in the paperback.
I’m bummed that Edwards got knocked out of Deceiver Madness, but Al Gore was a tough one to beat. After all, what’s a lie about a pregnant mistress who was (allegedly) paid off with presidential campaign funds when compared to a lie about an entire ecosystem?

lol This whole thing just keeps getting better and better. And every time you think that it’s reached its limits and can’t possibly get any better, suddenly, it does.
“Baron died last fall.”
How convinient.
Oh, crap. Paying off your babymama with campaign funds is a crime???
Nothing this idiot does can shock me anymore.
Careful! Edwards might take it as a challenge, and next thing you know he’s going to join forces with Gore and PeTA to form some kind of Voltron-esque super hypocrite, denying the rumors about his extramarital affair and love child with the greenhouse effect while he kills the presidential campaign funds his supporters gave him. Then he’ll… merge… with the entire Lohan family and bring about the Hypocalypse.
He should not be investigated because this was part of the campaign technicaly. He needed to portrait an image and his PR did every thing they needed to do to keep it , and that includes paying off his babymama.
HA what scum. i saw someone with a john edwards sticker on their car the other day and i just had to laugh!
In other news, John Edwards was interviewed by Oprah last week and was expected with his wife on the show on May 11, 2009.
Guess that will never happen.

I would be fun to see him have to spend what remains of his $40 mil he made channeling dead infants trying to defend himself, kind of ironic, a courtroom made him and now it might break him… Back to the mill house for you, Johnny Boy.
The National Enquirer is actually pretty credible when it comes to political reporting. They were the ones who kept finding things out about Clinton. Still I don’t get why a guy with his kind of bank would pay out from the campaign funds. On a separate note…I can guarantee you that if I were in his situation-my mistress would be waaay hotter. That I can remember-only Gary Hart seems to have gotten that part right.
He’s still the DoY in my heart.
“I can guarantee you that if I were in his situation-my mistress would be waaay hotter. That I can remember-only Gary Hart seems to have gotten that part right.”
THANK YOU!! My biggest gripe about Clinton wasn’t that he cheated (if you were married to Hilldabeast, wouldn’t you stray?), or that he lied about it, but that he lowered the bar about six light years when it came to political dalliances. In 50 years we go from Marilyn Monroe to Monica Lewinsky? Not exactly what you would call an upgrade.
Besides Gary heart the only one I can think of recently was that guy Jack Ryan from Illinois who was married to Jeri Ryan (better known as 7of9 on Star Trek Voyager). Granted, she wasn’t his mistress, but Obama used their divorce records (in which it was revealed he took his wife to sex clubs all over the place) to destroy his campaign, so it kinda counts.
Oooooh, more political scandal. Loves it! Elizabeth’s book is so gonna hit the top of the bestseller list…
Oh, I think the Breck Girl and his sorely-wronged spouse ought to go on talk shows. I think she probably has enough strength left, after her CANCER TREATMENTS, to beat everloving hell out of him with a chair. Or with a production assistant. Now, I’d pay good money to see that.
Hypocalypse. Haha. Good one!
Three cheers for Rocko & Chronic who were there at the very first JE/Rielle Hunter post
I continue to be amazed that Silky Pony’s wife is staying with him. Hillary staying with Bill I understand – he could have MURDERED Monica and she would have stayed with him if she thought it would benefit her in the long run- but you’d think Elizabeth Edwards’s experiences with cancer would have led her to the conclusion that life is too short to stay with lying cheaters. Of course, she stayed married to him when he started using closing arguments to claim that dead babies “spoke through” him…mabye it was the prestige of being married to the world’ first clairvoyant pony?
If you never knew Fred Baron personally, then you may not understand the level of compassion, empathy and generosity that he was capable of.
Obviously, Baron was so sweet he needed lemon, as he clearly helped to tamp down a filthy little secret. I mean, bless his heart, but damn.
Fortunately, you just have to briefly google Fred Baron to learn how much of a scumbag attorney he was. If there’s a hell, he’s in it.
For those who were fortunate enough to work with Mr. Baron, at that time, it is highly plausible that he would provide financial assistance to 2 former campaign workers. One must keep in mind that Ms. Hunter and Mr. Young were not celebrities, but private citizens, being harassed by the National Enquirer.
So he put them up in a $15,000/mo. rented mansion. Because he was a nice guy. Uh-huh.
So, Liberal813, did your Twitter blog get subpoenaed yet?
“my mistress would be waaay hotter”
He can’t afford a hotter mistress. He couldn’t even afford Rielle – had to go through his campaign funds to support her. I think Rielle is way too hot for him btw, as average looking as she is. I mean, look at him. I wouldn’t let him touch me even with Toby Kebbell’s dick.
P.S. Did I misspell Rielle? I was never able to get her name right. Oh well.
Aw. I love these heartbreaking stories, where the love between an oily, loathsome shyster and an opportunistic whore blossoms into parenthood–secret, tawdry, deny-at-all-costs parenthood, bankrolled by a richer oily lawyer, who’s just doing it because he had to take a break from spoon-feeding abandoned puppies because they made him sneeze.
You just feel so bad for everyone involved. Especially the wife of the “Sorry I fell on you all those times with my pants down” shyster, who really had A LOT ON HER PLATE. You know, dealing with cancer treatments, contemplating leaving her own, presumably legitimate, kids motherless, defending her dicksmack husband in the media…
Is this the slightest bit shocking to anyone? I just wish this would have come out before his title bout with Gore. He coulda been a contender.
To err is human; to forgive divine.
Liberal813 – Are you Cherubim by any chance?? Because your posting comments sure sound similar!! Don’t worry JRE will have his day in court – those of us who contributed to his presidential campaign deserve to know if campaign finance laws were broken.
Your defense that Ms Hunter was being harassed by the National Enquirer is laughable because she either tipped them herself or had a closed friend sell the story. She wanted money and she was going to get that money one way or another. Fred Baron’s was protecting his political investment in JRE when he started paying RH and Andrew Young.
“To err is human; to forgive divine.”
To keep it in your pants is good, too.
lol, Beige, I once heard someone say that Edwards should have just jerked off in the mirror. Or was that remark made about Beyonce’s dad? Well, whoever they were talking about, it sure applies here, too.
In a mirror?
**Scratching chin thoughtfully**
I’m with Warren Buffet, we who gave money need to sue him for fruad.
Liberal813 – Over the years I have worked with close to a 100 lawyers at various levels of success and from my experience, money = more conniving and manipulative bastard (and I even liked some of those guys).
To err is human; to forgive divine = to profit from it takes a lawyer
I don’t have to forgive him. He told the truth about about two Americas, he just lied about who he was and made himself irrelvant. Now he can’t be an effective spokeman. For those of you who think he can, where is he? No one invites him on TV to talk about anything. Oprah doesn’t count. This is Elizabeth’s book tour. No one wants to see him and even fewer care what he has to say about his affair anymore.
You have to feel so sorry for Elizabeth Edwards, for her kids, and for anyone who put time and effort and emotional energy (let alone money) into supporting Cap’n Crabfest, here. They brushed him and groomed him, and look what he went and did. And lied about it, and used THEIR MONEY to pay for the lie and for the lie’s diapers and formula. He’s a big old wide-brimmed asshat, complete with feather.
What do you call 100 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean? A good start
Just like I posted in Al “WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE” tread, is seems that Johnny boy might be a bit jealous that he was out of the bracket so soon.
Happy Camper – I didn’t realize JRE has been talking to anyone about the affair? Your right though, he’s made himself useless – all for a “roll in the hay with a middle age Ho”.
I bet Rielle is RILLY sad that she lost her Olympic amateur status, seein’ as how she got paid and all.
D—- Hopefully you will never again be faced with a legal problem that you cannot deal with on your own. Despite some recent public embarrassments, corporate America, for the most part, still calls the shots in our society. Often, the only buffer between their power and the average citizen, are the services rendered by a fair minded trial lawyer.
Beige, I like that. I’m sorry for all the innocent bystanders he got. That poor baby will be able to google her parents forever and know how worthless and immoral they are. She’ll turn out like her mother unless someone else raises her. Her mother’s original problem was her father and the fact that he would do anything for money. Now she’s done some serious damage to a family that needed to support one another and she did it for money. That’s the family value she’ll teach her daughter. That’s the true Karma that will bite JE in the but.
Hey, Marilyn–at least Edwards was useful for one thing, at least to Rielle. Without him as a pony ride, nobody would ever have known who she was, and she wouldn’t have been able to hit Baron up for anything.
Mercy. Liberal813 is right. Spoken like a really loyal paralegal.
I sure hope I can handle the dead-baby-channeling on my own, should it ever come to that.
Beige, I actually read his book. He didn’t channel a dead baby. I think the child is alive. I was her quality of life that was effective. What he did was to repeat expert testimony from a Dr. who was describing how the baby was effected, according to a strip from the neonatal monitor. 1st part of strip-0k, 2nd part-not so good, 3rd part-02 deprivation. That resulted in a baby born with CP. CP is a catchall diagnosis for brain damage with multiple causes. If I remember right this baby’s CP was caused by O2 deprivation. If there had been a C-section the baby would have been fine. The Dr. apparently didn’t believe in new fangled ways and changed a little girls future.
I don’t have a problem with his lawyering, just his lying and cheating.
“The Dr. apparently didn’t believe in new fangled ways and changed a little girls future. ”
Yeah, and now thanks to douches like Mr. Edwards and his ilk, C-sections are the most over prescribed surgical procedure in the country. Lets not forget that doctors aren’t required to JUST focus on the health of the baby, the mother’s health should come into the picture as well.
The more I see his face the less I understand why anyone would hit that.
I didn’t read his book, HC. If I wanted to read self-aggrandizing fantasy, I’d pick up some Stephen King.
Y’all, don’t get me started on the C-section thing. I’ve heard a boatload from crunchy, greasy-haired nipple-Nazis who think you’re an unfit mother if you didn’t give birth on your kitchen table, while biting on a wooden spoon soaked in chamomile tea, and then breastfeed the tot right up to prom night. To each her own on that one, is what I’m saying.
Anni: There were dollar amounts being mentioned, and both he and Rielle apparently possessed tight-weave burlap bags. It was the most romantic encounter since “Deliverance”.
LOL! I love the burlap bag (sack’s) comment. JRE & RH deserve each other – EE and the Edwards children deserve a better man in their lives though. Wonder if Oprah asked EE if JRE is the father and how she answered that question? I’m going to have to leave work early to see that episode of Oprah.
Beige: The money would have to be insanely substantial to compensate both for his ugly mug and the enormous drama attached to such a relationship. Plus, sans the dying wife with small children. Frankly, I don’t think it’d be worth it. Not for him.
You know, the more we learn about this sad little hillbilly soap opera, the more I wish some sort of recovery for Elizabeth. Those poor kids need ONE parent around whose every thought and deed doesn’t leave a smelly trail of skank.
I too hope for a cure and at least 20 more years for Elizabeth with her precious children.
