Christina Applegate, Cancer Activist, Snapped Smoking

Christina ApplegateThere are some celebraties (typo but I’m keeping it) you just want to shake. Britney Spears. Lindsay Lohan. Paris Hilton. Christina Applegate? Not normally but today she’s made the list.

Breast cancer survivor Christina Applegate was snapped puffing on a cigarette as she strolled down a Los Angeles street.

The 36-year-old “Married. . .With Children” star proclaimed herself cancer-free just last summer after undergoing a double mastectomy.

She even had the courage to show off her reconstructed figure during a scene from her hit comedy “Samantha Who?” just weeks after the operation.

Applegate’s mother also beat breast cancer and the star said her mom’s fight inspired her to beat the disease.

It’s disappointing and not to mention counterproductive given the brave front she put up last summer with all her talk of “If this had been caught a year from now, or when I was 40, I probably wouldn’t be able to live through this” and “Sometimes, you know, I cry. And sometimes I scream. And I get really angry. And I get really upset, you know, into wallowing in self-pity sometimes. And I think that it’s all part of the healing.”

She also participated in the Stand Up 2 Cancer awareness/telethon thing that somehow attracted a whole bunch of other celebrity smokers like Hilary Duff and Jennifer Aniston. Why they don’t vet their spokespeople, I haven’t yet figured out.

I feel for her for what she had to go through. That being said, I cannot believe that one she is smoking and two, that she is caught smoking. So many celebrities are role models for the rest of the population so they need to start acting like one. I would hate to hear what her doctor has to say to her after seeing this photo.

  2. 2 Katy Apr 10th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

I have never had any beef with Christina Applegate and now I wanna smack her. To survive something like that, to beat it, only to put herself at risk for another cancer or at the very least to lower the quality of the life she was given a second chance on…. it makes me angry.

  3. 3 Holly Won't Apr 10th, 2009 at 3:12 pm

That’s exactly it. She can gnash her teeth about how unfair cancer is until the cows come home but when she gets photographed choosing to indulge a habit that everyone knows is bad for you, the message is severely compromised. As a cancer survivor it’s profoundly stupid of her to continue smoking.

  4. 4 Fortunate Son Apr 10th, 2009 at 3:29 pm

What an idiot. Giving money and promoting the same company that tried to kill her.

Turns out she really is dumber than Kelly Bundy.

  5. 5 Toubrouk Apr 10th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

Some people are just hellbent over their own destruction. This is a sad example.

  6. 6 Beige Apr 10th, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Eh. If that’s what she wants, she can have it. It’s not like she’s the first.

  7. 7 Nati Apr 10th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

Oh God, this is so sad. I have an aunt who managed to beat cancer and smokes like a chimney. I mean, we were all there during her battle with cancer and she’s been through a lot, there were moments when we didn’t think she was going to pull through, but she beat it. Her recovery was just miraculous. And now she smokes. She used to try to hide it, but now she doesnt’ even bother to do that. We try to reason with her, we plead with her, every day I beg her to give up smoking…but it all just falls on deaf ears. The stupidity and recklesness of my aunt’s (and Christina’s) actions just baffle me. I just don’t understand why some cancer survivors choose to smoke and how they manage not to see a problem with it. That being said, I myself am an occasional smoker, so I guess it makes me a hypocrite, too.

  8. 8 Jrod Apr 10th, 2009 at 4:40 pm

    I’d hit it!

  9. 9 Jrod Apr 10th, 2009 at 4:40 pm

    If she smokes, she pokes!

  10. 10 angry army wife Apr 10th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

And I bet she also tastes like an ash tray. I guess as long as you just poke her and not kiss her, you are okay. :)

  11. 11 DOCWORM Apr 10th, 2009 at 5:12 pm

good thing there’s moral purists like the staff at The Deciever to point out peoples minute moral failures as if They’re damning evidence of the horrible character of said celeb.. As if all the good they’ve done should all now be undone and any orginizations who’ve communicated through them be persecuted as well.. Idiots. These are people and if You’re looking to them for role models and moral pillars, You’re looking in the wrong place and should look into why you need to do it.

  12. 12 Vagrant Dog Apr 10th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

I fail to see the big deal. So what if she smokes? My entire family, myself excluded, smokes, and you don’t see them dying from lung cancer. Diabetes complications, yes, a heart attack brought on by treatment for lung cancer, sure, and it’s obviously a coincidence that both mother and sister ended up with treatable cancers, but that just proves my point. Smoking won’t hurt her anymore than wading in asbestos or injecting your face with large doses of botulism. And I don’t see anybody calling cancer survivors on those, so smoking should be equally off limits.
Jeez, next you’ll be calling her on her daily toxic waste bath. Come on, it’s good for the pores and gives you a nice healthy (green) glow!

  13. 13 Simon Scowl Apr 10th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

So what brings you here, DOCWORM?

  14. 14 TheEyeSeesAll Apr 10th, 2009 at 5:28 pm

Personally, I see it as a subtle exercise of natural selection. Mother Nature tried to take her out once. Human doctors tut-tutted the almighty. And now Nature is back, saying “OhNoYouDint….”

  15. 15 Nati Apr 10th, 2009 at 5:30 pm

I agree with Docworm. How dare you all look to Christina Applegate for role model and moral pillar?! You are looking in the wrong place and should just click on Docworm’s screen name.

  16. 16 Holly Won't Apr 10th, 2009 at 5:33 pm

I get what DOCWORM is saying. Celebrities don’t make good role models, they’re just people who voluntarily attach their names to charitable causes and that alone should exempt them from all criticism. How dare we point out when they fail to hold themselves to the standards they chose to promote.

  17. 17 Katy Apr 10th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

You know, DOCWORM, You’re so right. Clearly Deciever is saying how terrible a person she is by making this mistake and You’re great for pointing that out, thank you. Here we are talking about how foolish an act this is and You’re kind enough to point out our foibles. Bless You’re, oops, I mean You.

  18. 18 Pastafarian Apr 10th, 2009 at 7:24 pm

And yet we should look to celebrities for political advice?

  19. 19 Anon Apr 10th, 2009 at 7:31 pm

Should I not be smoking while I’m reading this? I’m also morbidly obese and eating a double quarter pounder. I’ll probably die of old age, though. Because Nature hates to be lectured by health fanatics.

  20. 20 DOCWORM Apr 10th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

Its Kelly Bundy man.. seriously wtf? Staff and sheep should set up Your own personal “vetting” service as Your banal arguement calls it. That way they can all be sure they meet up to Your stringent standards on who should and shouldn’t be interviewed about their personal feelings at any given moment. Perhaps we should follow Your logic back to it’s root and persecute her for even being interviewed at all regarding her cancer.. She was exploiting it right? If her falling victim to her nicotine addiction once she’s recovered a bit can make her “disappointing and not to mention counterproductive…” instead of a victim of a the tobbacco industry. It simply reveals a mindset ready to attack and persecute rather than to sympathize and assist.

  21. 21 Karma Apr 10th, 2009 at 8:15 pm

Good lord people, get off your high horses. Smoking does not cause BREAST cancer. She’s been smoking since her teens, and in case you haven’t heard, it’s hard to quit. It also doesn’t make her any less of a cool chick, which she most definitely is, so since none of you know her personally, back off and take care of yourselves for a change. Morons, all of you.

  22. 22 WUD Apr 10th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

Whats weird about these pictures to me is, she looks like a non smoker trying to pretend that she smokes. Anyone else notice that? Her hands and face look weird. Real smokers don’t inhale with their cheeks, they inhale with their lungs. (Maybe its not as noticeable here, but I’ve noticed in the other photo sets from this incident that she doesn’t seem to be *really* smoking….)

  23. 23 Nati Apr 10th, 2009 at 9:57 pm

“a victim of a the tobbacco industry.”

yes, because those cigarettes were forced on her.

God, I’m bored. Gotta go download new “kanye hit” courtesy of South Park. lol kanye got owned. awww and to think that I almost lost my faith in South Park’s ability to own.

  24. 24 remf3 Apr 10th, 2009 at 10:28 pm

    WUD—

When I take (er, would take, trying hard to quit) a drag off a cig, I would take a mouthful and then inhale. A direct inhale into the lungs, at least for me, would cause hiccups. I smoked like this for, at least a pack per day, for 16 years. Cheeks in, deep breath. Of course, I could have been doing it wrong.

As a defense, quitting is the hardest thing I have done in regards to a habit. I haven’t smoked for about 5 weeks and that’s the longest I’ve gone. Several times I’ve wanted to run back to the only stress relief I have known in my adult life. I’m also an ER nurse and have heard all the cries of “You know what it does to people!” Hell yeah I do. It’s an addiction. If it was easy to quit, it wouldn’t be called an addiction. Some people can have a health scare and completely turn their lives around. Others run back to their previous habits stating “It didn’t kill me the first time, I can keep going.”

  25. 25 meofcourse Apr 11th, 2009 at 1:13 am

this is a stupid post. comparing lung cancer, which you get due to your own actions, to breast cancer, which is a blind killer, is offensive.

  26. 26 Vagrant Dog Apr 11th, 2009 at 2:43 am

From Wikipedia: “The most common cause of lung cancer is long-term exposure to tobacco smoke. The occurrence of lung cancer in nonsmokers, who account for as many as 15% of cases, is often attributed to a combination of genetic factors, radon gas, asbestos, and air pollution, including secondhand smoke.”
“Worldwide, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer after lung cancer (10.4% of all cancer incidence, both sexes counted) and the fifth most common cause of cancer death. In 2004, breast cancer caused 519,000 deaths worldwide (7% of cancer deaths; almost 1% of all deaths)…Although many epidemiological risk factors have been identified, the cause of any individual breast cancer is often unknowable.”

Hopefully that wasn’t too offensive. As a delightful side note, it appears she actually has a chance of giving others cancer, a year after her own battle with the disease. Maybe she’s just trying to spread the wealth.

  27. 27 Chronic Malanga Apr 11th, 2009 at 4:44 am

I didn’t realize that Applegate was a role model.

I’m pretty sure that if I’d had a scare like what she had, I would quit, though I am not a heavy smoker by any means, but at the same time, breast cancer isn’t something you generally associate with smoking either (it tends to be genetic ost of the time), and can see too, where it would be difficult to quit when you’ve had the stress of dealing with the decision of removing one’s breasts.

I’m not really sure how I feel about this. I can relate to her enjoyment of a cig, though I am as aware of anyone how dumb smoking actually is. And Jrod would hit it.

  28. 28 wickedorchid Apr 11th, 2009 at 10:50 am

They’re probably Ecstacy (not the drug!) organic herbal cigs. Tons of folks smoke those and they don’t have all of the carcinogens and toxins that traditional cigs have.

It’s a free country too. People can smoke, eat crappy food, get stupid looking piercings and tattoos, watch sitcoms with freaking Bob Saget, whatever.

  29. 29 Ani Apr 11th, 2009 at 11:16 am

Sure people have the *right* to smoke, but when you already beat cancer that wasn’t caused by smoking or any lifestyle choices… why would you want to risk another?! Cancer treatment is hell on earth, probably worse than tobacco withdrawal.

My ex is the same way… he had SO many health issues caused by his lifestyle choices, yet continues to fill his clogged arteries with smoke (mind, he’s just 34 and on cholesterol meds), eat nasty greasy foods, and drink copious amounts of Mountain Dew, never worked out- heck he basically COULDN’T. THEN complains how he never feels better and complains when the doctor ups his medications that people 2x his age get prescrived! I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t keel over from a heart attack within the next year. He received no sympathy from me during any of it because he was never proactive about *changing* anything to improve the situation. Yep, it eventually caused me to leave.

  30. 30 ej Apr 11th, 2009 at 1:59 pm

What a bunch of pathetic prudes you are, Deceiver!

I had stage-3 cancer when I was in my 20s (many many years ago) and it took me 7 years after that to kick the habit.

After you have stared at the face of death for a couple of years (cancer treatment can be a very lengthy process), you realize that nobody knows when their time is up, so you make your choices using slightly different rules.

If she wants a cigarette, let her have it. First, it’s her body and second, she probably fears that the other cancer (the real one, not the hypothetical lung cancer she may get from smoking 30 years down the line) is going to come back so she is trying to find the balance between planning for the future and living for the moment.

Yes, Deceiver, things are little more complex than you thought.

Get off the moral high ground now. You have no place there.

  31. 31 bigmama Apr 11th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

I will say it took me about ten years to quit smoking. Hardest thing I ever had to do. And the worst time to quit is when you’re stressed. If she quits so soon after going through chemo and cancer, it might be too much and she’ll go right back to smoking. I also know when people hounded me to quit it just made me want to smoke more, just so I could piss them off. When she’s ready, she will stop.

  32. 32 Jannah Apr 11th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

Whoa. I went thru cancer treatment, and all of the doctors at the treatment center said that smoking was supposed to be totally off limits forever for cancer patients. It’s not just the risk to your lungs, the poisons added to tobacco can affect and attack your entire system. VERY not smart of her to take that risk after already having cancer. :-p

  33. 33 Simon Scowl Apr 12th, 2009 at 12:27 am

It’s her body, and it’s our eyes.

  34. 34 sassafra Apr 12th, 2009 at 12:48 am

i’ve met her sevral times in our neighborhood which we share in litchfield connecticut. she’s a lovely person in reality who’s been through a lot. i’m sure when she finally get’s a handle on everything once her inner strength rebuilds she’ll manage to quit the smokes…until then i won’t begrudge her being human.

  35. 35 LN Apr 12th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

Wow, there is hope for me after all….If a former “guest” P.C.D. is considered a role model then I must be listed as uber role model. I guess I must start smoking, oh wait, with the new taxes on smokes I am too poor to afford them. There goes my chances.

  36. 36 Kaliska Apr 12th, 2009 at 11:22 pm

Meh. Something is going to kill you. If she’s got ‘em, let her smoke ‘em.

  37. 37 Aleric Apr 13th, 2009 at 9:53 am

Just by reading the comments in this thread I can pick out the smokers and the bleeding hearts without finishing the reply.

Note to people posting on the Deciever website, it’s about Hypocrisy, if you say one thing and do another then you are a hypocrite. If you are a celeb who does it and then thinks people are not going to see you in PUBLIC doing what you claim you are against then you are going to be judged.

  38. 38 Beige Apr 13th, 2009 at 11:45 am

Um…ej? I don’t see you on that hill, either. I’m glad you got through the cancer and all, but check out Aleric’s post. It sort of explains why this site is here, I think, and what is meant by the Applegate post and others like it. If the whole principle bugs you, maybe some other site would welcome your insights. I mean, I don’t own Deceiver or anything, but come on.

  39. 39 angry army wife Apr 13th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

I concur. You do not go on TV to help fight cancer, ALL cancer and then show up around town with a cigarrette. No matter who you are. Gee, sounds like those celebs who hate fur, but don’t mind wearing it, huh? That is why this site is here, to bring out the hyprocracy in people’s lives.

  40. 40 Chronic Malanga Apr 14th, 2009 at 4:53 am

While I do see the hypocrisy in the point being made here. If you are going to take a high profile, cancer fighting stance, it probably isn’t helpful to smoke in public. But, in all fairness, that would make a lot of us hypocrites as well. Sure, I’m not famous even on my street, but just because I enjoy a few cigs a day, doesn’t mean that I am uninterested in cancer research/finding a cure. It’s cancer, and it’s a disease that has touched my life personally. It’s not as though there are actually pro cancer organizations out there. With all the things that do cause cancer out there aside from cigarettes, they’d have a hard time getting anyone that wasn’t in some way a hypocrite to schlub for cancer research.

  41. 41 MC Mom Apr 15th, 2009 at 2:09 pm

Chronic, as a complete hypocrite, I see your point. Everyone is guilty of hypocrisy at some point. But…(you knew there was a but, right?) celebrities like Applegate have a much better chance of influencing more people than you or I do.

And honestly, isn’t calling out these hypocrisies the raison d’etre for Deceiver? Don’t tell me you’re questioning the whole Deceiver premise! ;-)

  42. 42 Lucy Apr 18th, 2009 at 5:51 am

Blah blah blah. Ooooh, she had a cigarette…what a huge failing. Get lives, seriously.

  43. 43 Nati Apr 18th, 2009 at 5:29 pm

    “Get lives, seriously”

right away, miss early morning internet user!
