I’m not a true baseball fan; I go to the games for the Dodger Dogs and only check the score when the beer guy is slow in beering me. But Manny Ramirez is a big deal these days in Los Angeles — half the Dodgers billboards feature his swinging dreads. So the fact that he’s just been suspended for 50 games is causing a bit of a freak out:
Manny Ramirez was suspended for 50 games by Major League Baseball on Thursday, becoming the latest high-profile player ensnared in the sport’s drug scandals.
The commissioner’s office didn’t announce the specific violation by the Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder, who will lose about one-third of his $25 million salary.
“Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me,” Ramirez said in a statement issued by the players’ union.
“Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now. I do want to say one other thing; I’ve taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons.”
You have to wonder if not steroids, then what, exactly, he was taking to bring the hammer down like this. So much for Manny’s strategy of laughing off Jose Canseco’s accusation last month that he was juicing. Canseco may be a lot of things but clued in happens to be one of them.

This is so disappointing because even though Manny is an ego on legs, he was a Red Sox and a Dodger, my two favorite teams. Even worse, along with Perez Hilton, I’ve always regarded Jose Cancesco as a bad example of “my people” so I’ve just always hated him.
I don’t even have anything clever to say. I’m just saddened by this.
Since I bleed Dodgers Blue, ya’ll get to use your imagination on the following: *^(& T*&%T)( (&%&%$#&%^*(&*(##%*(_)((^$*()__*(*^$$#$.
** Sorry for the profanity**
CM- you just named the two biggest reasons why Manny is a douche. Sorry about that but the truth sometimes hurts
Oh, and if any of ya’ll say anything bad about the Dodgers, just remember that as of today, we STILL have the best record in the MLB! HA!
Swede1319… I know the feeling. I know.
Gives a whole new meaning to Think Blue.
Aw, no fair, Hurricane. I’ve loved both those teams since I was knee high to a turd.
Hurricane, Manny may be a douche, but the guy can flat out hit a baseball!
CM, have you been to http://www.dodgersblues.com? It is a must for the frustrated Dodgers fan. The name of the web site is Dodgers Blues if the link doesn’t work.
@$#%^*^$ Manny!
Swede is right. The boy has some power. Now we know why, of course, but still…
I LOVE that web site. I haven’t been in ages, though. Thanks for the reminder. When you first posted on here I was trying to remember the name of the site and ask you if it was still around, cause every Dodger fan has been there.
Thanks!
True true Swede but still…..unless he becomes a Marlin then he’ll stop smelling of a summer’s breeze.
The medication was for erectile disfunction. He can’t get it up.
H, I was under the impression that the Marlins sell off all the good players. Unless the owner and GM have changed the collective thinking and are stupid enough to give @$(&) Manny his long term contract at the end of the year.
Just read the LA Times article, MLB did not come out and say it was steroids. It was just a banned substance. Still, nice to see @#$%^&* Manny own up to it and take responsibility for his actions.
For 50 games there has to be more to the story…
As for the Marlins selling their best? They sure do, dagnabbit! But I’ll take 2 WS rings in the last 12 years over Dodgerball any day of the week!
According to MLB, 1st offense is a 50 game suspension, 2nd offense is 100 game and 3rd is lifetime ban.
Ok, we’ve been shut out for the last 20 years but we still got more than the Marlins. Infact, the only MLB team with more rings are the $%@#!$&* Skankees.
I too have heard the rumor it was ED medication, but I just can’t quite believe the league would dock him for 50 games over hard-on pills. What possible athletic benefit is an erection? If anything, the guy should get a medal for being able to play this well with a party in his pants.
That being said, this Yankees fan could really care less. Come on kids, you KNOW you want to come over to the dark side with your old friend Scott.
Scott F, I would stab myself with a putty knife before I even thought about supporting the pinstripes. The only exception…Joltin’ Joe (pre-Mr Coffee).
Haven’t heard the ED rumor. SI and ESPN aren’t saying anything about that rumor. Must be coming out of the Boston Globe.
I read this earlier. Steroids decrease your testosterone levels. The drug he was taking is supposed to boost you testosterone levels to get your sex drive back to normal. It could be that this drug is on the banned list because the need for it comes from taking roids.
Oh, and, color me surprised.
Being from Boston, seeing how Manny was literally a cancer to the Red Sox team I could say “good riddance, haha, we don’t need you anymore” but…*sigh* Honestly, it disappoints me because as much as doing steroids is a major FAIL, he brought 2 World Series to Boston.
I read about the ED rumor earlier, and I suppose it could fall under “performance enhancing”, which is what one web site classified the drugs as, but I bet that the ED thing is just a rumor. Not from personal experience, mind you, but because that makes a better rumor. And it would really be a stupid way to be brought down a few notches. I’m just going to stop before everything I type becomes a sexual innuendo.
Meg, I’m glad you finished your statement about the Championships and %##@$^ Manny. I would have had to drop the “How’s the Big Sloppy doing this year?” on you.
Everybody, have a good evening, I’m off to watch Juan Pierre bounce the ball 10 times from shallow left field to the cut off man, pay $10 for a 10oz BudLight and $20 for parking. Otherwise known as a night a Dodgers Stadium.
Go Blue and Muck Fanny!
Does this make the baseball season shorter? God I hope so.
All I have to say is HA HA…
Manny isn’t on steroids. We all know he gets his strength from his hair. They’re just suspending him because he won’t cut it.
i don’t know anything about baseball (or sports for that manner) but all i know is my boyfriend is laughing at this. lol
shoot i meant *matter
As a lifelong Sox fan I have to gauge my reaction to this as decidedly…meh. (And I sorta can’t figure out why.)
I do, however, want Remy back asap. It’s just not the same without him.
Pasta, I’m with you. The fact that Manny’s been suspended for 50 games and will still play for three months after that is mind-boggling to me.
That said, this Boston homer says, Go Sox! And, like Meg, thanks Manny for the 2 championships. If nothing else, he helped stop the whining around here.
Lifelong Sox fan here as well, though I was endeared to the Dodgers because I used to go to a lot of their games when I would visit Dad in the summer, so they are a close second.
My grandfather was a lifelong Sox fan and a huge Ted Williams fan. He died in March of ‘04 after waiting basically all his life for a Series win from Boston. I like to think that he and Ted had something to do with that magical October and their successes since. But yeah, Manny is one of those people I have to credit for some happy baseball out of Boston.
It was only after two years that my grandfather was buried at sea that my grandmother quietly admitted to me that she’s always been a Yankee fan. I cried a little.
It could be worse, you could be a Reds Fan like I am
OK, so I’m a jinx! The first game of the year that I go to and they lose. %$#&^%&%$ Manny!
Lots of drugs are banned that are not necessary illegal but can enhance or impede a player’s performance. If he was accused of juicing it (taking steroids) but was found not taking steroids, he has every right to laugh it off.
If he IS found to have been taking steroids then he should be wearing a Deceiver nametag
Ouch, AAW.
Chronic, my husband and father are both mild Yankee fans. I’m OK with it only because I grew up in Virginia, where baseball is an afterthought once Redskins mania dies down.
MC Mom… I love that. Mild Yankee fans.
Baseball is king in our family. My dad played Triple A ball for years when I was a kid, so I have been watching baseball probably since birth. But, there is no denying that I am the product of the ‘72 Dolphin season/Super Bowl. I was born rougly nine months after that Super Bowl.
And it’s probably my mom’s fault, because she is the big football fan in the family.
According to an ESPN report, the drug used by Ramirez is human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a women’s fertility drug typically used by steroid users to restart their body’s natural testosterone production as they come off a steroid cycle. It is similar to Clomid, the drug Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi and others used as clients of BALCO
Yep, Chronic, mild Yankee fans, and you can’t really blame them since both grew up in New York.
My dad was probably sitting in our basement yelling at the TV during the ‘72 Super Bowl. I say this because he sat in our basement every other Sunday during my childhood, yelling at the TV as the Redskins (often) managed to pull defeat from the jaws of victory in the 4th quarter.
So to avoid all the ‘Skins heartbreak, when I moved to Boston I became a Pats fan.
MC Mom… can’t blame them. After all, the other alternative would be the Mets.
Try being a Dolphin fan. Having one of the greatest QBs and coaches that ever lived and nothing else is what made the Dolphins so tragic while I was growing up in the 80’s. They might as well have stuck Shula and Marino with the Sisters of Our Sacred Heart for receivers. Sammy Smith anyone?
Hmm. HCG (the natural version) is what causes the pink line when you take a pregnancy test, I think. Heh. Amusing to think of Ramirez sitting at an OB/GYN’s office, reading back issues of “Parents” magazine and talking about stretch marks. I mean, probably didn’t happen, but who knows?
