Obama and Harry Reid: Fear & Looting in Las Vegas

harry_reid_official_portraitToday is the day President Obama flies out to Las Vegas on the taxpayers’ dime to attend a fundraiser for Harry Reid, after telling a townhall audience in Elkhart, IN: “You can’t get corporate jets. You can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas, or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayers’ dime.” Sounds like all dimes are not alike!

When I’ve mentioned this before, and that his condemnation of Vegas has helped his class-warfare message at the expense of the local Vegas economy, a few doubters have questioned how much of an impact the President of the United States can really have. Well, according to today’s Washington Times:

Days after the presidential warning, financial juggernaut Goldman Sachs Group Inc., which accepted $10 billion in federal bailout funds, moved a three-day conference from the Las Vegas Strip to San Francisco. Wells Fargo & Co., which received $25 billion in federal funds, canceled a scheduled employee conference in Las Vegas.

On May 19, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported 340 event cancellations in the 90 days since Feb. 18, which it said has cost the local economy about $131.6 million in lost spending.

Coincidence? Hey, anything’s possible.

Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons and Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman are not invited to the fundraiser. However:

Tickets for the Reid fundraiser, dubbed “The Good Fight,” start at $50 for the concert. But a $29,600 contribution, to be split between Mr. Reid’s campaign and the Nevada Democratic Party, gives donors access to the Senate majority leader and the president.

Keep in mind that at this point, nobody is actually running against Reid.

Gee, I wonder what the average citizen of Elkhart could do with $29,600?

If only you were a wise Latina woman you would see this in the proper perspective. It’s the good fight. How can you be against that?

  2. 2 LN May 26th, 2009 at 2:25 pm

This is the chosen one and his change. It can’t be bad.

  3. 3 angry army wife May 26th, 2009 at 3:16 pm

$29,600? to see “The One” and nasty Reid? If I had that much money, my finanical aid would be paid down and we could afford to get some new doors for our house. Gee, I wonder how people with GM and DHL could use that money? What a complete waste of money. Not to mention to fly Obama out there for this event.

I will take my change elsewhere.

  4. 4 Kristine May 26th, 2009 at 4:43 pm

He could have avoided the obvious hypocrisy by holding this in, I dunno, dirty Reno or DC, but he’d rather just blatantly throw it in our faces. *sigh*

  5. 5 Aleric May 26th, 2009 at 4:55 pm

This is how the left win elections. Trash the very people they claim to support then ask them for money and like good little Dems the masses open their wallets.

  6. 6 smrstrauss May 26th, 2009 at 5:03 pm

Do you have proof that the flight will come from taxpayers’ money?

The usual procedure is that if the president is traveling for political purposes, he travels on Air Force One but he has to pay back the cost of the trip. It think that is what will happen in the case.

  7. 7 Koka May 26th, 2009 at 7:02 pm

Oh, if he pays it back (yeah right) we’ll never hear the end of it…………..LOOK WHAT I DID, I PAID IT BACK, SEE HOW GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD A PRESIDENT I AM!

I don’t think we should hold our breath waiting for him to show us the receipt.

  9. 9 jimmy May 26th, 2009 at 9:38 pm

If he does pay it back, he probably will only have to pay the amount determined by using IRS valuation rules on private aircraft travel, not the actual cost of the fight including private aviation fuel.

  10. 10 Kristine May 26th, 2009 at 9:42 pm

But the tax payers are also paying his salary… so he’s paying it back with our money too? Or maybe that gazillion dollar book advance that was previously reported on!

  11. 11 jimmy May 26th, 2009 at 10:29 pm

Actually, there is a special accounting formula that is used to figure reimbursement. The accounting formula calls for the White House to calculate how much of a trip’s time was devoted to politics and how much to official business. The candidate or state party is billed for its share of the locally incurred costs. The government pays 100 percent of the president’s transportation, communications and security costs, regardless of the trip’s purpose.

  12. 12 Neil May 26th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

Jeez…everyone seems to be really up in arms about the President taking this trip. Unfortunately, the taxpayers of America will be paying for this one trip, but may we all reflect on the amount of vacation and travel time Americans for the previous president. Furthermore, I agree with the angry army wife comments…. I wonder how people can spend so much money to get a cold chicken dinner and rub shoulders with people who will forget them by the time the night is over.

Not without reflecting on whether or not he played the same types of class warfare games, which are the reason I’m bringing it up about Obama in the first place.

  14. 14 angry army wife May 27th, 2009 at 8:20 am

Bush never said “Don’t go there” and then went there to raise money for some washed up guy who already has millions in his coffers and no opponent. I agree, the same people now who are against him will readily open their wallets just to be in the mere presence of “the One”

  15. 15 Aleric May 27th, 2009 at 9:15 am

Also remember that Bush was not a partisan person he very rarely went out of town to endorse republican candidates. PEBO is going to set the record for most time spent in the air by a president.

Also I am surprised you guys didnt catch the WH snubbing a bus load of school kids to spend time with the Pittsburg Steelers.

  16. 16 angry army wife May 27th, 2009 at 9:24 am

Aleric – I saw that article as well. They were late to the tour because of traffic and were told that they could not be granted access. How rude, espeically to a bunch of 5 year olds. And yes, he did not want to be late to the luncheon where he received his Steeler’s jersey.

  17. 17 jenn May 27th, 2009 at 10:27 am

Lets hope the people of Nevada are not suckered in by all this bs and re-elect that awful Harry Reid.

  18. 18 jimmy May 27th, 2009 at 11:40 am

The POTUS will be at a fund raiser in Beverly Hills today. Anyone want to give me $30,400 so I can have a meet and greet with the One?

  19. 19 TrojanPrincess May 27th, 2009 at 12:46 pm

Nuclear bombs are going off in North Korea and our Commander in Chief is busy attending fund raisers in Las Vegas and Beverly Hills or nominating affirmative action justices to the Supreme Court… great. We’re doomed.

  20. 20 angry army wife May 27th, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Great. $30,400 to meet him? In California where there is no money? With so many people out of work, that money could go to good use. Let me guess, Susan Saradan and Barbara Streisand will be there among the other elite celebrities.

  21. 21 bigmama May 27th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

These tools have the power now, huh? If it was bad before, it’s just going to get worse. God, I hate politicians.

  22. 22 Minnow May 27th, 2009 at 4:50 pm

Don’t worry about the Korean nukes, TrojanP.

I hear the Mighty O is crafting another sternly worded statement to Lil’ Kim en route to the fundraiser.

    That’ll do it, yup.

  23. 23 TrojanPrincess May 28th, 2009 at 10:21 am

Has anybody seen the quote from Obama at the Beverly Hills fundraiser?: “When you look at the economy right now, I think it’s safe to say we have stepped back from the brink, that there is some calm that didn’t exist before.”

Funny how he’s all doom and gloom and panic and blame until he shows up in Beverly Hills asking for money and doesn’t want to look like a hypocrite; then all of a sudden the economy is getting better. How convenient! Geez, this guy is such a tool.

  24. 24 Minnow May 28th, 2009 at 10:51 am

    It’s not calm. It’s numbness.

  25. 25 smrstrauss May 31st, 2009 at 12:46 pm

All presidents travel for political purposes. Obama is just like the others. Big deal.

I still believe that I read somewhere that the cost of the trip must be paid by the party.

I also remember that a president (any president) cannot even make political telephone calls from the oval office. He or she has to go to the residence to make the call. Calls from the oval office are paid for by the taxpapers. Calls from the residence are paid for by the president.

  26. 26 Simon Scowl May 31st, 2009 at 3:56 pm

But not all presidents condemn private citizens for doing something and then do it themselves.

Wasn’t it so sweet that BO took his lovely on a “date” to New York for dinner and a show? And they were being so considerate because they took a scaled-down Air Force One.

    I JUST WANT TO PUKE!!!!

  28. 28 angry army wife Jun 1st, 2009 at 12:23 pm

You mean the date that cost us upwards of $24,000? Yeah, I caught that one.

  29. 29 TrojanPrincess Jun 1st, 2009 at 1:35 pm

As with everything Obama does: could you imagine if George and Laura Bush pulled something like that in the middle of a time like this? Do you think the media would be like “how sweet!”? Yeah, right…

  30. 30 stonegrigio Jun 1st, 2009 at 2:06 pm

The most disgusting part of it is, he totally flaunts it in our faces, after preaching to us about “sacrifice.” He doesn’t know thing one about sacrifice. How much more of this can we take?

  31. 31 smrstrauss Jun 1st, 2009 at 3:03 pm

Re: “But not all presidents condemn private citizens for doing something and then do it themselves.”

I don’t understand your point about a private citizen. The discussion was whether the president was misspending taxpayer money by taking a political trip. Obama never condemned any president for taking a political trip, and I am convinced that this trip–like the trip to New York–will be paid back because there are regulations about use of the taxpayer money for private or political purposes.

  32. 32 Simon Scowl Jun 1st, 2009 at 3:06 pm

I don’t understand your point about a private citizen.

The thing is, I think you’re actually serious.

  33. 33 angry army wife Jun 1st, 2009 at 3:16 pm

The media chose to discuss how lovely Michelle looked in her black dress…. If Laura and George did this, it would be about how they spent the weekend before one of the major automakers declares bankruptcy and did not seem to have a care in the world. As my husband often tells me, life ain’t fair.

Just like how people who pay off their credit cards are being charged fees whereas those who overspend and rack up their debt are being let off the hook.

Those lines down her back are SCARY!! And sorry, that blue clutch does not match. You’d think she can afford a better stylist, her husband having just acquired an auto company and all.

    Nauseating.
