Hooray! Endless entertainment! It’s seal hunting season again in Canada!
On Monday, Governor General Michaëlle Jean took part in native tradition by killing a seal and eating its heart. Raw. You know where this is going.
Our good friends over at PETA weren’t too thrilled to hear that the Queen of England’s representative in Canada is slaughtering (and, gasp, eating) animals. PETA gave its usual blah blah blah on seals and according to the Toronto Star:
PETA yesterday likened Jean’s sampling of seal heart to “taking part in the beating of women in the Middle East because it is part of local practice.”
PETA has no qualms about blaming Canada but obviously overlooked the fact that killing animals by the gajillion is “local practice” inside its own organization. Canada, don’t you dare hunt seals, but please don’t yell when we kill dogs and cats.
Kudos (does anyone still say that?) to Jean for defending her right to re-enact scenes from Dances With Wolves:
“These are ancient practices that are part of a way of life,” Jean said, framing her gutsy gesture as an act of solidarity with the Inuit. “If you can’t understand that, you’re completely missing the reality of life here.”
Reality is a foreign concept to PETA.
No kudos to PETA. Ever.

I believe this is your first post? Well done!
And kudos indeed to Jean for having some common sense and respect to cultural traditions that reflect how a people survive in a harsh (i.e. eat or be eaten, because that kinda happens in the wilderness) Mother Nature.
You know, if anyone in PETA really had the courage of their convictions–which we know they don’t, but let’s pretend–they’d volunteer to feed the lions and tigers and bears. I don’t mean “feed” as in “carry food to them”; I mean FEED, as in “roll in bacon grease and lie still”. Or, Wednesday night, as we call it at our house.
Nice to have you here, Britney. (That’s the first and only time THAT phrase has ever been written, heh.)
People Eating Tasty Animals
yay! Britney’s 1st post!
And just when I thought I couldn’t hate PeTA any more than I already do “PETA…likened Jean’s sampling of seal heart to “taking part in the beating of women in the Middle East because it is part of local practice.” “. Name the specific country, petards, don’t lump everyone together. What may be a part of a local practice in, say, some rural areas of Pakistan is illegal and frowned upon in such Middle-Eastern countries as, say, Turkey, Azerbaijan and countless others…Middle-Eastern stereotypes ftl
As a Canadian I’m almost proud of her. But then I remember she used to be CBC reporter.
And she is the 2nd female CBC reporter in a row as GG. Buying off the CBC seems to be the new thing to do.
Yay for Brit-Brit’s first post! Good one too. I love the quote in this article: “If you can’t understand that, you’re completely missing the reality of life here.” As TheIrish said, the reality of life in some harsh places is “eat or be eaten.” If only everyone in Peta lived in one of those places.
And how dare they constantly use women as the comparison to animals. But who could be surprised after they base most of their campaigns on sexually exploiting women as brainless sex objects that like to run around naked and copulate with vegetables? Peta: where only women are treated like meat.
TrojanPrincess loved the “where only women are treated like meat.”
Congratulations Britney – well done. Keep ‘em comming.
So would PETA be okay with the whole seal heart thing if she cooked it first?
TrojanPrincess, I’ma bake you a cake. Those are some good points, right there.
Every time I hear/read something about PETA, I’m reminded of the Pat Buchanan (at least I think it was him) quote “Every great cause starts as a movement, becomes a business and ends as a racket.” I think PETA has been on the “racket” end of the spectrum for quite some time…
Hmm, I see PeTA starts out strong with its eye on a repeat for Deceiver of the Year.
I’d eat it.
As a Canadian, it is the first time I am seeing the Governor General doing something great for the country!
Hail to you Michaëlle Jean, our glorious Royal Leader!
P.S.; I try to locate seal meat for years in Montreal, anybody here got a clue where I can find some?
Congrats and welcome, Britney! The more the merrier.
Courtesy of smalldeadanimals.com, here’s a great post about some of the less attractive animals:

OK, I’ll admit that eating raw seal organ meat kind of turns my stomach, but I’ve got a really weak stomach. You go, Ms. Jean.
Honestly, PeTA shouldn’t bother hiring spokespeople – they should just make a few choice recordings and play them over the phone for the media. It’d save a bunch of money.
What I want to know is when HRH Lizzy suddenly decided not to eat her own seal innards anymore.
Sounds like someone’s getting a bit too big for her britches…
While our illustrious Governor General ought to be praised for taking a stand and saying so-called political correctness be dammed (for probably the first time in her career), I still can’t support this fully. After all, all the emphasis here is put on the Inuit seal hunting. There is a lot of other individuals who make a good honest living from the seal hunt. I can’t help but think that she would never throw her support so strongly behind these individuals, despite she is indeed inadvertantly supporting the Seal Hunt as a whole. But when the myriad of foreign celebrities come to protest the non-Inuit segment of the Seal Hunt, you don’t hear her standing up for them. As is traditionally the case with this foolish aspect of our government, the Governor General is a stooge for the leftist agenda. If it didn’t involve a minority of some kind, she could care less. Where is her support for the Canadian farmer as our beef industry is brought to its knees. The desperation of the hard working farmer means nothing to her, but the livelyhood of a comparative few individuals is worth eating a still warm heart for. Its a strange society we live in.
Fuck the Governor General, and this stupid system of Government.
Interesting comment, Kyle – I didn’t realize there was a non-Inuit seal hunt. I guess it’s politically easier for the government to support minorities more than other hunters and farmers, despite the fact that the latter have also been around for centuries.
What’s happening to the Canadian beef industry? Why has it been brought to its knees?
As a Canadian, I hate the post of the Governor General and in particular, I despise Michaelle Jean. This site, of all sites, should know that she’s the Queen’s representative to Canada. It’s a nice job with a big fat paycheque and tons of perks. She took it despite being a separatist – that means she wanted to see Quebec, her province, separate from Canada.
I hate her and can never stand behind anything that hypocrite did. Kyle, I don’t fully agree your argument about the leftist agenda (especially since our gov’t is right) but she’s never there for anything forthwhile. Well, unless it’s in Europe and she can fly business class.
