Gay Rights Groups Cheer President Obama’s Public Support for Same-Sex Marriage

Whoops, did I say President Obama? I meant former Vice President Dick Cheney. And so far there doesn’t seem to be much cheering.

According to the Boston Globe:

Cheney said yesterday that he supports gays being able to marry but believes states, not the federal government, should make the decision.

“I think, you know, freedom means freedom for everyone,” Cheney said in a speech at the National Press Club. “I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish, any kind of arrangement they wish.”

Cheney, who has a gay daughter, said marriage has always been a state issue.

Meanwhile, as ABC’s Jake Tapper notes, The Most Gay-Friendly President Ever was doing his part, sort of:

President Obama issued a presidential proclamation Monday in honor of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month…

Mentioning his administration’s international efforts to decriminalize homosexuality, the President said he would continue to “support measures to bring the full spectrum of equal rights to LGBT Americans” — enhancing hate crimes laws, supporting civil unions, outlawing discrimination in the workplace, ensuring adoption rights, and ending the existing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy for gays and lesbians in the armed services.

“Forty years ago, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City resisted police harassment that had become all too common for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community,” the proclamation reads. “Out of this resistance, the LGBT rights movement in America was born. During LGBT Pride Month, we commemorate the events of June 1969 and commit to achieving equal justice under law for LGBT Americans.”

That equal justice under law did not include, in the president’s recitation, perhaps the highest profile issue on the gadar – same sex marriage, or what LGBT activists call “marriage equality.”

People are starting to notice that Obama’s not in favor of gay marriage, no matter how much he tries to make it sound like he is. He’s trying to play to both sides without ticking off either one, and it’s not working. Whereas the evil guy who everybody hates just says, “Yeah, I think it’s a good idea. If the states want to legalize it, go for it.” A straight answer on gay marriage. What a concept.

It’ll be interesting to see how much longer gay rights activists will continue to turn a blind eye to Obama’s opinion on this, which is worthy of scorn, ridicule, and outright harassment when held by anybody else.

Wonder what Perez Hilton thinks about it? He must be lavishing Cheney with praise for disagreeing with that “dumb bitch” Carrie Prejean, right? I’d go over there and check, but I still haven’t renewed my walrus-hunting license.

Evil incarnate supports gay marriage?….oh now that’s just hysterical

Would it be racist of me to point out that Obama panders so much, he needs a big purple zoot suit and a ginormous tasseled hat?

    It would?

    Okay, then.

I think I may have to take a break from Deceiver, and the world in general, for a bit. The fact that the One is anti-gay marriage while Emperor Palpatine is for it, coupled with that lovely Spencer Pratt rap video from yesterday, is just too much for my mortal noggin to be able to comprehend in a forty-eight hour period.

    LOL Beige, so true.

I recommend sleep, TheIrish. Sleep, and maybe few really high-quality cocktails.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone Dick Cheney is in favor of marriage, some people say marriage can be a form of torture. ZING!

Well, good for Cheney. As for Obama, well, whatever. I could care less if he supports gay marriage. His choice, not mine.

I don’t know, David Mixner and Cleve Jones are already fed up with him and want to have a gay rights march on Washington in the fall.

    It’s hard out here for a pimp…

It would be interesting to see every gay voter in America vote Cheney over Obama in 2012.

Deceiver personnel : TheIrish is barking up the right tree, I think. But I claim you’re making all this up — this couldn’t all have been in one week (or so) — POTUS/Cheney gay issue; Kate/ Octomom; T & T quitting the show; the passing of the last Titanic survivor; North Korea’s Kim going more insane (well, that’s believable). Okay, they’re not all “your” stories. And the one we all wish “was” made up, the Air France crash (may they rest in peace).

‘Mentioning his administration’s international efforts to decriminalize homosexuality, the President said he would continue to “support measures to bring the full spectrum of equal rights to LGBT Americans”’

What rights do American LGBT’s not have that straight Americans have?

I find it interesting that Cheney seems to be more of m.s.m. presence now than he was for the 8 years he was v.p.

He’s never had to defend himself from the President of the United States before.

“I find it interesting that Cheney seems to be more of m.s.m. presence now than he was for the 8 years he was v.p.”

Say what you want about the last administration but one lesson they seemed to learn is no matter what they say it was going to be twisted so better to say as little as possible.

  15. 15 Hurricane Jun 3rd, 2009 at 11:16 am

Anyone who wanted to listen to Cheney over the last 8 years could have done so. No need to depend on the MSM to feed you your “news”.

Damn shame he will never be president. One of the greatest public servants in our nations history. Thank you Mr. Cheney for all you have done.

  16. 16 Koka Jun 3rd, 2009 at 2:02 pm

Beige, he needs a walking stick with a gold knob on top of it and a floor length fur coat too…….oh wait, if he had that then the Petards would be picketing in front of the “White” house.

  17. 17 Jrod Jun 3rd, 2009 at 4:39 pm

Hurricane – He might have run for Pres one day…which is why they had to work so hard to make you think of “Eating live puppies” when you hear the name “Dick Cheney”.

  18. 18 Kristine Jun 3rd, 2009 at 11:16 pm

With the way Obama is over kissing the Arab’s butts, is it any wonder he’s against gay marriage? If it’s one group far, far, far more staunchly opposed…

That said, I’m not if it’s more frustrating if the media continues to ignore this or suddenly would think Cheney is amazing because he uttered one thing they agree with after wanting to stone him.

  19. 19 Beige Jun 4th, 2009 at 8:18 am

Yeah, it’s going to be fairly amusing to watch the Great Half-White Hope try to reconcile his deep and abiding love and respect for gays with his Muslim fanbase’s burning desire to execute them. Probably the only way to straddle the fence on that one is to be a gay Muslim, but I have a feeling there’s not exactly a lot of overlap on THAT Venn diagram.

  20. 20 The thing is Jun 7th, 2009 at 11:20 pm

… Joe Biden said it plainly in the VP debate – neither he nor Obama wanted to federally legislate gay marriage. I’ve never expected the Obama administration to do that much about gay marriage, beyond wanting him to get the DoM booted as he did promise to do.

As for complaining about pandering, come on – it’s a politician’s job to pander, and if you want to be elected President and get sh*t done, you’re going to need to pander on some things, and also lie your butt off about some other things. People who tell the truth about everything, to everyone, all the time, may be great people – but they do not get elected to high national office.

Yet when a beauty queen runner-up says it, look out.
