Those two crazy kids got married last March, and I forgot to congratulate them. Because I had no idea. But still, all the best to the Letterman family, and may Dave & Regina have many happy years together!
…
What’s that? Why am I bringing it up now, you ask? Well, to be honest, I haven’t watched Letterman regularly in at least a decade, and I’m actually a bit surprised that he’s still on the air. But then he said this the other night:
Get it? Because Bristol Palin had a baby out of wedlock! That’s so funny.
Hey, did you know that Harry Letterman is six years old? But his parents only got married a few months ago? Using my super-keen deductive skills, I think that means the kid was born out of wedlock.
Do you think Letterman would like it if he took his family to a ballgame, and somebody went on national TV and made a joke about Regina or Harry having sex with one of the players? I don’t think he would.
Never mind that it wasn’t even Bristol who was at the game with her parents, but rather her younger sister Willow, who’s 14. Now, some people — let’s call them “the observant” — put 2 and 2 together and realized that therefore, David Letterman was joking about an underage girl being impregnated by Alex Rodriguez. At a Yankees game. While her parents were there with her.
Letterman reacted to this criticism thusly:
I think what he’s trying to say there is that he’s really tired of being on TV, but he just can’t turn down all that money.
David Letterman is a notoriously private person who tries to shield his family from the press, and this week is a perfect example of why that’s a good idea. He’s trying to protect them from… well, from people like him.

He’s still on the air? I’m surprised he’s not fuming over being passed over for The Tonight Show again.
Letterman is old and haves a job, Bristol was a teen with no job. The joke was tasteless but their situations are different.
So it’s more acceptable to make such a joke about a teenager than an adult, not less. Hmm.
The whole thing is ridiculous. If someone had called Michelle Obama slutty, They would be ripped apart within seconds. And joking about a 14 year old getting knocked up on the field? Please, that’s like joking about child molestation.
I’m not talking about the joke. I’m talking about comparing Bristol having a child out of wedlock and David doing the same, those are really different cases. The joke was bad , not even funny.
And the emmy for longest nonapology on a television show goes to… David Letterman.
Letterman thinks so, apparently. I’m not so sure.
What a disgusting nugget of news coming from someone I saw as a class act on TV. The whole segment gives a bad name to variety programing.
“David Letterman is a notoriously private person who tries to shield his family from the press, and this week is a perfect example of why that’s a good idea. He’s trying to protect them from… well, from people like him.”
This criticism would hold water if Sarah Palin hadn’t thrust her pregnant teenage daughter into the media spotlight during her VP run, as well as coerce her into an engagement for political purposes. A engagement which was “mysteriously” called off as soon as it’s political currency had diminished.
Sarah Palin was happy to tell people in America how they should live there lives by a more moral, biblical code whilst allowing her underage daughter to have undersupervised sleepover dates with her then boyfriend. That is true hypocrisy.
As I stated in a previous post, Letterman had NO reason to go there whatsoever with ANY of the Palin children. Calling Palin herself “slutty” was inexcusable, too. So what, she has a great figure and looks great in her skirts… what woman wouldn’t dress the same? She dresses very classy… the lady has taste! If having 5 children with one’s husband of 20 years makes Palin a “slut”…*gah* stupid Letterman.
QB: their situations ARE different. Letterman’s an adult in the public eye by choice. Bristol (and all the Palin children) were in it because of their mother being the VP pick, NOT by choice. Willow especially has seemed to avoid being in the spotlight…poor girl must be feeling like she wants to crawl under a rock and die right now.
If he has to pick on her kids to make himself seem ‘funny’, he needs to rethink his career. I’m a very liberal gal and despite what someone else mentioned on the thread about Carla Bruni-Sarkozy…not all liberals think the Palin family is fair game or funny to crack jokes about. Sure, Sarah Palin received ridicule for her debate, interviews, and speeches, but that was just Sarah who was in the spotlight by her own choosing. Her CHILDREN shouldn’t be fodder for jokes. This gives me one more reason to be glad I don’t bother to turn on my TV to watch Letterman.
It’s the old double standard thing and Letterman is the king of Idiotdom.
Anything does for a laugh no matter at who’s expense. lest it be his own.
Oh Heaven forbid!
“Sarah Palin was happy to tell people in America how they should live there [sic] lives by a more moral, biblical code whilst allowing her underage daughter to have undersupervised sleepover dates with her then boyfriend.”
Ahem, could you provide a link to substantiate your allegations? Otherwise, I think that’s all that sentence is: allegation. Or, perhaps fantastical, unfounded gossip. I don’t recall ever seeing Sarah Palin telling people in America how they should live their lives. So, link(s), please!
Thanks so much for this post, Simon. Shitterman was waaaaaaaay over the line. I guess he’d find it absolutely hi-lare if a nationally recognized (but perhaps actually FUNNY) comedian joked about Dave’s 6-year old son being molested by a grown man at the zoo while Dave’s attention is distracted by the baboons mating. Hahahahahahaha. No, not so funny.
Things he has said about Palin are bad enough and should not be tolerated, but children should absolutely be off limits! That fossil and his perverse, premeditated, woman-hating sewage need to be removed from the public’s airwaves.
She didn’t thrust anybody into anything. She ran for Vice President and dealt with the media firestorm over her daughter’s pregnancy.
A-Rod should be upset, too, at the suggestion that he’s a child rapist.
It’s easy to see why the Alfred E Neuman wannambe hates Sarah Palin. He could never get a woman like that, even with the gazillions that he has.
From that picture, it looks like a same-sex union.
Politicians can’t win. If you try to keep your kids out of the spotlight, people wonder what is wrong with them that you won’t show them off. If you say, here are my kids who I love, people say you are exploiting them. Regardless, a politician admitting they have kids and acknowledging them publicly does not make the kids “fair game”. I’ll never understand the animosity and hate aimed at Bristol Palin and her mother. The media treats murderers and rapists more kindly.
I had planned to watch Letterman over Conan as I thought Conan was more crude. Way to prove me wrong, Dave. Looks like I am switching to the Tonight Show until he gets a clue.
Letterman is snarky as ever and his arrogance knows no limit. It’s why I won’t watch him, period. Its one thing to be funny, another to be flat out bitchy with your nasty jokes.
If Palin is a slut, what does that make the bimbo who shacked up with him for all those years so they could produce a bastard between them? As for that player I would sue the arse off Letterman for making him out to be a child rapist. Is that how Letterman sees all Latinos?
How many magazine covers has Obama done with his girls? Palin didn’t put her kids in the spotlight, it found them. Mrs. Palin did the best she could with the blitz the media put on her.
By the way, Ahem, did you do EVERYTHING your parents told you to do when you were 17? Were you the epitome of grace under pressure when it came to sex? Or did mommy’s voice pop into your head in the heat of the moment and cause you to stop from making a mistake? Bristol’s mistake was HER mistake, not her mother’s. And Bristol is doing a great job trying to make sure that mistake isn’t compounded. Sarah Palin hasn’t been running for office since November. Why is it that Letterman thinks that she and her family are still relevant for joke making anyway?
Was a time if a child is born out of wedlock. That child was called Bastard.
Seems that does not apply in this day & age. Ain’t that right Dave.
bristol is a teen mother who had her kid out of wedlock and her mother was miss ‘dont have sex until marriage’ even though sarah was knocked up when she was married too. why are you so hung up on palin still? her time is up.
The spokesperson for the Palins responded:
“The Palins have no intention of providing a ratings boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show,” said Palin spokeswoman Meghan Stapleton. “Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman.”
I lol’d.
Here’s the full story:

“As for that player I would sue the arse off Letterman for making him out to be a child rapist. Is that how Letterman sees all Latinos?”
Jesus. That’s what we call grasping at straws. I always thought Letterman was crap but if he can wind up the sad cases who get upset over this aged turd of an article then more power to him.
Same double standard. If anyone said the same thing about Michelle and her daughters they would be ripped off of the air. Remember Don Imus? Yep, Fired. How is Slutty Flight Attendant any different. And she did not thrust them into the spotlight. Why is she fair game when the Obama girls are not. and the hypocracy with Sarah Palin would be that her daughter had an abortion, not a child.
That any parent of an underage child would advocate this to another’s underage child is beyond the pale.
I’m a little surprised A-rod wasn’t incensed, as it kind of paints him as the kind of sex offender who’s found dead in prison skewered with a broomstick (Jeffrey Dahmer’s demise).
I’ve been a huge Letterman fan for decades and his show has completely fallen apart in the last 18 months, and he’s almost phoning in the jokes.
He either doesn’t want to be there and he’s just collecting a paycheck or he’s fulfilling a contract.
Roberts, it is what you call grasping at straws, and if you dont’t mind being likened to a child rapist then more fool you.
Don’t forget Obama was himself the product of underage sexual activity and his mother was seventeen when he was conceived.
Barack Obama Sr was seven years older.
Strangely, Obama Sr’s exact birth date is apparently a state secret, but has been publicly stated to have been in 1936.
Palin’s personal misnavigation of the relationship of her daughter and boyfriend during their late teen dating period, IS NOT, I repeat, IS NOT a license for LETTERMAN to attack Palin or any family members with misogynistic and hate filled insults (he calls them jokes, they were anything but jokes).
Blame Palin all you want for not negotiating the relationship between Bristol and then boyfriend Levi, but all of you who want to blame Palin’s foibles, real or perceived, for LETTERMAN’S hate-filled attack are REALLY the hypocrites. The one does not justify the other.
Next Please!
“Why are you so hung up on Palin still? Her time is up.”
Maybe you should ask Letterman, who obviously thinks she’s still topical enough to have her children slandered on TV. Admittedly, to an audience of about 98 people, but still.
Letterman is in his 60s, isn’t he? Well past the hip young edgy stage, in other words. (I say this as a woman in my early 40s, so I’m well past that stage too.) This was nothing more than a desperate grasp at relevance and attention on his part.
Anytime these guys wanna make fun of the guy that actually won it’d be fine by me. I mean, he’s made a mistake or two right?
Why is the left so hung up on Palin. They fear her. Her time is still to come.
This is a little off topic and probably an old joke but here goes…. I was told if I voted for McCain we would get an idiot for a VP… they were right
“bristol is a teen mother who had her kid out of wedlock and her mother was miss ‘dont have sex until marriage’ even though sarah was knocked up when she was married too. why are you so hung up on palin still? her time is up.”
So maybe, having lived through the other side, they decided things would have been better had they done them the other way. That’s like saying, “Yul Brenner was such a hypocrite, he smoked for years and then made those anti-smoking commercials.” Yeah, because he was well aware of the consequences of doing it.
I love all the wild flailing about how Sarah Palin’s “time is up.” She’s in her mid-forties and doesn’t seem to be leaving politics anytime soon. Time to accept she’s not going anywhere, guys.
And these allegations that SP “made” Bristol get engaged are flat-out ridiculous. Yeah, because you’re Bristol’s BFF and that’s what she told you, right? You’re a random person with no inside scoop who likes to think the worst of everyone you disagree with. It’s pretty obvious.
I did find it fascinating that Palin didn’t make the recent Playboy hate-fck list.
You’d think she’d have topped the list given the way the left sexualized her during the campaign.
Yeah, Minnow, I thought that too. And I just love how pro-woman most liberals are, how very finely sensitive they are to anything that might be offensive to women–UNLESS the women are conservative. Then, no vileness is ever vile enough, because liberals apparently think women have been bought and paid for and ought not act all uppity, because it’s not as though we’re individuals with all the rights of individuals. We’re supposed to think, act, and vote as a bloc, just like minorities. Once we start stepping off the reservation, it becomes perfectly acceptable (in their minds, anyway) for them to start slinging around terms like “hate f*ck” and “bitch” and worse.
too bad the pharma hoes can’t come up with a vaccine to prevent hipocrassy. seems to be a much more contagious disease than freakin influenza. if yer human, you got it.
The English really do have a better grasp of the language than us Yanks, huh?
I think Dave (who I love, love, love) made some really stupid, offensive, inexcusable jokes, and it’s right that he be called out.
That said, Sarah Palin’s response increasingly smacks of political posturing, thereby lessening my sympathy for her – but not for her daughters – though it in no way makes me any less pissed at Dave.

“Why is it that Letterman thinks that she and her family are still relevant for joke making anyway?
AMEN!!!! Any new Palin jokes after November 4 are simply people trying too hard.
“How is Slutty Flight Attendant any different. And she did not thrust them into the spotlight. Why is she fair game when the Obama girls are not”
It’s NOT different from what Imus said, and the Palin children aren’t fair game, never should have been seen as such.
“Strangely, Obama Sr’s exact birth date is apparently a state secret, but has been publicly stated to have been in 1936.”
It MAY have to do with birth records in his part of Kenya not being kept as well as records here in the USA. Some places, children do not get birth certificates until after the age of 5 when it’s less likely some childhood disease will kill them.
Also, Beige, I fucking wish that liberal men were classy to progressive women. I find that, absurdly enough, liberal men are the worst of the lot. I may disagree with a conservative man who’s pro-life, but he will rarely tell me to ‘get back in the kitchen and make me a fucking sandwich’ and then act like it’s ok because he voted for Obama!
C., I have to agree with you there. I have some archconservative male friends who treat me and my opinions with much greater respect than any liberal guy I’ve ever met. Shoot, my husband is quite conservative, and he shows me a great deal of respect–even though I do, in fact, have boobs.
I am honestly astonished at the batshit crazy hatred that Sarah Palin and her family bring out in some people. (I mean, my God, somebody even tried to burn her *church* down — while occupied!) Like Simon said, all Sarah did was run for VP. It was the media that brought up her pregnant daughter. It was the media who literally dug through her garbage in Alaska. She was accused of “exploiting” her children, especially her Down’s baby. However, if she made them stay home and hid them, she would have been accused of being “ashamed” of her children, of being a neglectful mother, etc.
You see, she can’t win no matter what she does. The hatred has no rationality. I don’t think it’s just politics. I think it’s a mixture of misogyny, hatred of people who live more rural lifestyles, hatred of people who don’t abort Down’s babies and hatred of religious folks (especially Christians).
I wasn’t aware that Emily Post had addressed how to respond when a someone infers that your 14 year old daughter is a whore on national television.
I hope we can watch the language, especially when discussing the topic of etiquette.
How would you respond? Without political posturing, of course.
And he extended an invitation for her to go on his show. Yeah, right.
Pinhead says: This criticism would hold water if Sarah Palin hadn’t thrust her pregnant teenage daughter into the media spotlight during her VP run, as well as coerce her into an engagement for political purposes. A engagement which was “mysteriously” called off as soon as it’s political currency had diminished.”
Hey Pinhead, she took her 14 year old to a baseball game. Do you get that? That is thrusting her into the spotlight? That argument is a talking point “read” by Ariana Huffington eariler, why don’t you try to do something unusual and think for yourself?
By the way, I may be wrong but believe that Obama was also born out of wedlock. His Mom must have been a real slut (Since it seems ok to call women sluts).
Oh and that beauty Michelle Obama looks like a freaking Klingon Warrior.
Simon, honestly? I wouldn’t.
The original joke wasn’t at Willow – it was at Bristol. David has said he had no idea that it was Willow and not Bristol accompanying Sarah. Still off limits, still fucked, still completely wrong. But it changes the context of the joke from “LOL A-ROD WOULD RAPE MY 14 YEAR OLD” to “LOL BRISTOL IS A SLUT”.
and I mean, coming out and talking about reading an e-mail at night and being all horrified and accusing David of being unfit to be around children and talking about how she is defending the self-esteem of young women everywhere is just ridiculous. Just one statement of ‘this is unacceptable’ would do. Better yet, let the statements that have been released by organizations like NOW stand. The Governor of Alaska should be above a stupid joke made by a late night comedian.
I wish there was an edit feature.
The latter joke – haha, Bristol is so slutty – while messed up, isn’t nearly on the same level as the joke Sarah is claiming David made for one reason:
Bristol is 18, a legal adult, and a natural abstinence advocate. She has given interviews and appeared on the cover of national magazines. Bristol Palin is a public figure in her own right. Therefore, the comparison to Sasha and Malia is inaccurate because Sasha and Malia are not adults who have their own pet cause that they are promoting on a national level.
This is in no way an advocacy of the jokes, which were sexist idiocy.
On the plus side, maybe we will end up getting “The Late Show with Craig Ferguson” out of all of this! That would fill me with glee!
Bristol wasn’t there. Her younger sister was. They do actually count as two separate people, even though they’re both Palin’s daughters.
Willow Palin is none of those things. And I wouldn’t expect to be able to make jokes about Obama’s kids getting knocked up at a baseball game just because they’ve been on magazine covers.
Late night comedians shouldn’t go after people’s kids.
And this is the last time I’ll tell you: Watch your mouth.
How the hell do you defend what someone said by saying he didn’t mean it when there is a VIDEO of it right above your post?? It is amazing that Liberals can try and defend something when it is staring them dead in the face.
Letterman said EXACTLY what he said, there is no take backs or do overs, he said it on national television with millions of people watching him and no matter how you try to explain it away it is there for all times “C”. Ger a clue and stop watching MSNBC so much, only Olberman could twist something so much to try and make it look like truth.
Sarah Palin in my opinion didn’t say enough, I would have been a lot harsher with the MSM trying to cover up for one of their own. A Liberal.
So how’zabout we compare Letterman’s Bristol comment with the flying phlegm from the left over Chelsea Clinton:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/02/08/msnbc-reporter-begrudging_n_85706.html
Chelsea was 28 at the time of the “utterly inappropriate and indefensible” comment.
” It is amazing that Liberals can try and defend something when it is staring them dead in the face. ”
Hey now, Aleric! I’m a liberal and I have not once stuck up for Dave on this one! C’s a moron, please don’t lump them in with the liberals who actually have a sense of decency!
While yes, Bristol may be a bit of a public figure, why in the name of heaven and earth does that “qualify” her to be the butt of some late night show’s joke?! There’s PLENTY of stuff going on to crack jokes about, Letterman didn’t need to go after any of the Palins.
C, I think he was lying in his so-called apology. That joke was aimed at Willow, not at Bristol. I’m not buying for a second that he didn’t know which one of Palin’s daughters was at the game. He now claims that his joke was aimed at Bristol, probably trying to make himself look a little less like a douche. And even if he were talking about Bristol (which he wasn’t), that still wouldn’t be okay. In a somewhat similar situation with Don Imus (whom I heartily dislike btw) our whole country was up in arms. That extortionist Al Sharpton was there, all freshly permed and whatnot…along with some other pseudo-activists. Where are all those people now? I wonder what our President has to say about this.
Our President, Nati? Are you kidding me? First of all, this involves conservatives, so he doesn’t care; secondly, they’re white conservatives, which presumably means that in his mind they’re “typical” white people, so he doesn’t care. If you’re holding your breath waiting for that grinning douchebag to care about anyone but his own self, I hope blue is your color.
What BO has to say? He points his finger at Letterman, grins that goofy toothy grin I just want to punch out, giggles like a little girl, and says “that’s uh, that’s funny, Dave!”
My point exactly, Beige! When Imus opened his trap, our Prez (then presidential candidate) called for Imus’ firing. I wish someone asked him/his administration to comment on this situation, I’m dying to hear what they have to say about this.
And when I say I want to know what he has to say about this, I mean an official statement, not his private thoughts – I think stonegrigio guessed quite accurately what those might be…
“Our President, Nati? Are you kidding me? First of all, this involves conservatives, so he doesn’t care…”
Beige, don’t you really mean “this involves someone other than Obama, so he doesn’t care”?
I don’t see any indications that Zero gives half a damn about anyone but himself. I mean, his wife’s a woman and his kids are girls, and seems to me he’s all about the bro club until it’s time to throw the bros under the bus, too.
LiVo–yeah, pretty much.
I disagree slightly, Nati (but three big cheers for the rest of what you wrote).
The joke hinged on the mental image of yet another unplanned Palin pregnancy, which is why no specific daughter was named in the joke. On a comedic level, it works for any Palin daughter to be banging a Yankee behind mom’s back.
I’ll bet the writing staff did nothing more than confirm that it wasn’t Piper in attendance before they green lighted the joke. These bits are thought through and edited several times by staff writers before they’re passed on to the talent. That joke survived numerous veto opportunities, including Letterman, multiple producers, a director, and a network censor.
Even if it was Letterman’s idea from start to finish, nobody called him on it in rehearsal and nobody edited it out in the 4-7 hours before the taped show aired nationally.
This was a case of group think: “everyone in our little backstage world thinks this is funny, therefore it must be funny.”
Minnow, I was pondering the same thing (the joke making it past writers, producers, etc.). There’s no way Letterman is powerful enough for everyone to cower in fear at correcting him on something…which honestly is why I kind of wonder if he WAS perfectly aware that it wasn’t Bristol at the game.
Does anyone else suspect that this whole Palin/Letterman hoo-ha is a little too perfectly timed with Conan’s taking over “The Tonight Show”?
Think the Yankees were in on it?
Minnow, you are probably right about the “joke” content, the fact that it was scripted, passed censorship and that may be DL didn’t even come up with the “joke” himself. My issue with this, however (aside from the joke itself) is how he’s now saying that the joke was about Bristol
and assumes that it somehow makes it all okay. It doesn’t. Not to mention that I’m irritated by his arrogant tone and the way he’s spouting off as though everyone agrees with him. What he’s saying in his “apology” is basically this: “Bristol Palin is 18, so it’s okay to pick on her” . Well, guess again, Dave. Picking on someone’s children is cowardly and an ultimate form of douchebaggery. And why does he (and some other people) think it’s okay to say such things about Bristol Palin? So she’s an unmarried young mother, so what? She obviously has a loving family that stood by her and supported her and are helping her to take care of the child. Good for them! I never understood why Sarah and Bristol Palin were vilified by the media because of the fact that she had a baby. Bristol Palin was treated as if she had gone out and killed someone. She had a baby, why is it regarded as such a bad thing? So may be her pregnancy wasn’t planned, may be she’s too young, she’s not married, so what? I think that the child is always a blessing and the way Sarah and Bristol Plain were criticized by the media was despicable. I never understood why Sarah Palin and her family were hated so much, what did they do to be hated? I disagree with some of Sarah Palin’s political views and disagree with some of the things she said during the campaign – she didn’t always sound well informed (to me) on some of the key issues, but on the personal level I like her very much. I think she’s a great mother – I absolutely admire how she supported her daughter through all of this, I think it takes an exceptional person to be that supportive and understanding. If anything, she should be commended for that. Her daughter’s having a child at a young age doesn’t suggest that Sarah Palin is a bad mother. The way she supported her daughter proves that she’s a great Mom. And also, the fact that he called Sarah Palin “a slutty flight attendant” got completely sidelined. How dare he say that? What kind of a “joke” is that? Gov. Palin is a very attractive and elegant woman and that “joke” was uncalled for. Very disrespectful and completely unacceptable.
You know, I don’t watch these things, these late night shows, if I find the time to watch TV, I usually opt for a movie. I have hard time even telling all those people apart – Larry King, Letterman, Conan O’Brian, Jay Leno…and what the hell’s that other ugly thing’s name? The one with the metallic silver hair…never mind…Judging by the extracts from Letterman’s show I watched here on deceiver, I’m not missing much, at least, as far as Letterman’s show is concerned. I find him crude, offensive, disrespectful and douchey, not to mention, unfunny. I would love to konw what they do to get the audience to laugh…
Cuz ppl jus been haterz. To Chris Brown-ify.
Although you to have to admin, Palin’s stance on premarital sex, sex ed, and many other sex-related topics did sort of…well, if she hadn’t been so adamant on that particular topic, Bristol’s pregnancy wouldn’t have been as big of a deal, I don’t think.
Plus, everyone was looking for any excuse to declare Obama the Messiah. Sarah Palin’s stance on sex, abortion, and the like coupled with her apparent lack of control of her own children (because yeah…you know, it’s not like teenagers never go behind their parents’ backs or hook up during the day or in cars or keep anything at all from their parents…) just gave ‘em more ammunition to polarize things into “Good vs. Bad.” Which yes, I heard far too many people say. Apparently voting Republican was evil. Voting Democrat was good. Anything that supported this stance was pretty much milked beyond all rational possibility.
“Think the Yankees were in on it?”
Nope. A-Rod was collateral damage. I’d cry for him but I’m a Sox fan.
(Can someone remind me how you quote people in the wicked cool way Simon quoted me, back in comment #63?)
Sure can do, MC.
