I hesitate to speak ill of one of the few remaining Golden Girls because between Estelle Getty and Bea Arthur, they’re dropping like flies this year (and on top of that it’s Celebrity Death Week, apparently). But Betty White is in possession of an epic flip-flop.
The 87-year-old actress just gave an interview to a Canadian news service in which she explains why she doesn’t trust PETA:
White has been active with animal organizations for more than 40 years. The Denver-based Morris Animal Foundation funds “humane” studies dealing with the health problems of dogs, cats, horses, zoo animals and wild life. “I’ve also been with the Los Angeles Zoo for 41 years. Life is divided in absolute half. Half is my show business work and half is my animal work.”
But she is not an “animal rights activist” – “health and welfare, that’s all I’m interested in” – and she is critical of militant bodies like PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).
“They play dirty. They not only give misinformation but disinformation . . . . They won’t listen, and it infuriates me. I’m sure they love animals but they should find out the facts.”
She sure is in good company around here.
But what’s that? She once starred in an anti-fur PSA for PETA? And pestered a Vogue editor on PETA’s behalf for having the audacity to wear fur to New York Fashion Week in February 2006?
PETA’s vocal campaigns against the zoos she loves should have been enough of a tip-off that this wasn’t a group she wanted to align herself with, but here’s hoping it maybe took a while before Betty saw the light. (Just as long as she doesn’t walk toward it.)

Not really a flip-flop, is it? More of a flip; she has yet to flop back to pro PETA. It’ll be something to keep an eye on.
The reason she can honestly say she doesn’t support peta is because she doesn’t remember ever supporting Peta. One of the “joys” of old age.
Whatever, Betty White is still hot. Total GILF.
J-Rod would hit it, no doubt.
So, what’s the problem? Nothing is static, and PETA has certainly gone on, over time, to alienate folks that were probably once part of their support base. So, Betty has decided to distance herself from PETA. Why speak ill of her? Or anyone else who has changed their alliances when they felt it was called for. I call that being aware, not hypocritical. Geez.
Rose was the dippy one…
In St. Olaf fur is mandatory.
Not sure this is hypocritical but more she came to realize what PETA is about. If she shills for PETA sometime in the future – well that would be hypocritical.
Y’all, this woman can probably hide her own Easter eggs. She probably answers political pollsters with the phrase, “I want cheese on mine.” I’m not inclined to pick at her.
If you pick at her do little bits come off in your hand?
Yes. And they usually turn out to be made of buttercream frosting. Mmmmmm!
Dang Holly, you’re good!
I didn’t think anyone had production stills from Betty’s I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Outta Here video shoot.
Beige, you crack me up. She can hide her own Easter eggs…heh heh.
I’m fine with Betty White turning her back on PeTA – it means we’ll never see her in one of those “I’d rather go naked than wear fur” ads.
*shiver*
Speaking of PETA, I saw this article and had to laugh. Really laugh considering Kid Rock use to date Pam Anderson, biggest PETA hypocrite.

Betty White ROCKS, and she has the right to express whatever opinions she wants. She can hate the fur trade and still disapprove of some of PETA’s other, more loony, positions. PETA itself has credibility probs when it comes to hypocracy, not our Golden Girl.
I once had the pleasure of meeting Betty White and found her warm, delightful, intelligent and charming. Nobody has any business telling her what she can and cannot say or which issues she should support. Let’s all show some respect for a classy lady.
Awwww, now the healing can begin.
Betty White is for animal welfare, not animal rights. PeTA wasn’t so terrible, or at least they didn’t show their true colors, when they first started. Now it is run by, and supported by looneys, and Ms White is definitely not one of them. HSUS is just as bad, and Betty doesn’t support them, either.
