We Get It, Gwyneth: America Stinks

Gaunt GOOPmistress Gwyneth Paltrow is at it again! Remember a few years back, when she got in trouble for saying this?

“I love the English lifestyle, it’s not as capitalistic as America. People don’t talk about work and money, they talk about interesting things at dinner.

“I like living here because I don’t fit into the bad side of American psychology. The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans.”

Yeah, Americans are such dumb savages that they’ve made Gwyneth Paltrow rich enough to live well in any country she chooses. What were you thinking, Americans?

Paltrow, realizing she’d just taken a shot at her own gravy train, then backtracked as well as she could in those 7-inch heels she prefers. She insisted she was misquoted, she was “proud to be an American”, and other lies.

And the way you can tell they were lies is that she just keeps saying this stuff:

Gwyneth Paltrow says Spain has “became a second home.”

“It is so different from the United States. It seemed to have a history, and the buildings are years and years and years old. Here in the United States an old building is about 17 (years old), and over there it’s from 500 B.C., it’s incredible,” she tells the Associated Press.

“Also, the way people live over there. They seem to enjoy life a little bit more,” she continued. “They aren’t running around as much as in New York. They enjoy time with the family. They don’t always have their BlackBerry on.”

“Years and years and years old.” Kind of like her. Physically, anyway.

Let’s make a deal, GOOPy: You stay away from America (or at least New York, which you seem to think is the same thing), and we’ll keep staying away from movie theaters with your name on the marquee.

Well, unless Iron Man’s in it. Iron Man’s awesomeness cancels out Gwyneth Paltrow’s utter unawesomeness. Does England have its own Iron Man? Does Spain? Yeah, okay, but their suits of armor can’t even fly without using a catapult, and the landings son una puta.

Does anyone know what GOOP stands for? How about Gwen Oohhso Obnoxious Paltrow?

Why does she come back here at all? Like the did in Spiderman with the WTC can’t they do that with her character in Ironman?

  2. 2 Hurricane Jul 1st, 2009 at 1:50 pm

Those wacky genius Brits. They are so smart they get so much done in five minutes that they have the rest of the day to binge drink and fall face down in the streets.

Oh, and they like soccer. Brilliant!

  3. 3 Nati Jul 1st, 2009 at 2:01 pm

“It is so different from the United States. It seemed to have a history”

    And the United States don’t?

“in the United States an old building is about 17″

    No, Gwyneth, that’s your IQ.

  4. 4 Nati Jul 1st, 2009 at 2:11 pm

Hurricane, soccer (football) is something the whole world happens to love, not just the Brits, who btw have sh*tty football but somehow managed to convince themselves otherwise. Must be either delusion or denial or both. But anyway, let her stay there with “the civilized intelligent Brits” and never come back. Knees up muvva brun. Hope it’s fun for her…

It took a long time for me to jump on the “hate Gwyneth” train. But, I hate her HARD now. Hope she keeps running her damn mouth.

She doesn’t like American lifestyles? Here’s a hint GOOPy…stay the hell out of America.

  7. 7 Timm Jul 1st, 2009 at 2:27 pm

If she wants to see a place in America with a lot of OLD buildings, I suggest St. Paul, Minnesota (don’t laugh). While not as old architecturally as European cities (I mean, come on Gwennie, the European head start is pretty apparant and mutes whatever point you are trying to make,) I’m always wandering around admiring the preserved history of my hometown. Not trying to say where I’m from is the best of anything but it does have some beautiful 100+ year old buildings.

  8. 8 Jannah Jul 1st, 2009 at 2:28 pm

She managed to get through a visit to Conan last night without saying anything anti-American. Oh yeah, that’s cuz it’s aired in America, she’s not brave enough to trash the USA on American TV. Apparently she was selling nothing but her GOOP website last night. And her legs looked very greasy. :-p

  9. 9 Jannah Jul 1st, 2009 at 2:36 pm

I agree Timm, there are plenty of cities in the US that have managed to preserve their 100+ year old architecture. She grew up in NYC, she should have some slight knowledge of the buidlings there, unless she’s a complete tool. And hasn’t she ever traveled in the South West where the Anasazi (thought to go back to 1200BC) Canyon de Chelly dwellings are? They count as American architecture too Goopie.

  10. 10 Fortunate_Son Jul 1st, 2009 at 3:05 pm

The government owns large stacks in over 500 US banks, controlling interests in Chrylser and GM, and is making CEO and Advertising expenditure decisions for these companies.

The US isn’t captialist as it used to be, but its starting to look awfully socialist.

    Jannah,

“And hasn’t she ever traveled in the South West where the Anasazi (thought to go back to 1200BC) Canyon de Chelly dwellings are? They count as American architecture too Goopie.”

Oho! Good catch. I was going to say something similar. And if one were to decide that such buildings didn’t count because they weren’t made by the same sort of Americans as today, well, neither were most ancient European structures in their various parts of the world. Building’s in Italy weren’t made by the same Italy as we have now. They were made in an imperial Italy, a feudal Italy, an utterly capitalistic Italy (ironic since she seems to hate the whole capitalism thing), a Fascist Italy, and then finally the Italy we have today and have only had for the past 50 years. At least if one were to even point at modern American architecture, it’s still always been the same America since we won our independence, which is farther back than most modern Europeans can claim. People may have been settled on the same lands since and even named the country the same thing for thousands of years, but they’ve just kept reclaiming the works of those before them. Maybe she just craves political chaos and hates how America has been relatively stable compared to most of Europe over the past 200 odd years. Capitalism will do that, I guess. I suppose it all comes down to whether or not she cares about the history of a country or the history of a region. No matter which it is though, she’s stupidly forgetting certain facts that are in opposition to her viewpoints on history.

  18. 18 Anonymous Jul 1st, 2009 at 5:08 pm

Man, I gotta git me over there to Spain so I can sees the fancy people living in buildings from 500BC!

I’m with Jannah. I might even suggest a trip to the Cahokia mounds/pyramids in Illinois. 500CE ain’t too bad considering all they had to work with was rocks, dirt, some sticks, advanced astronomical tables, and an understanding of the number zero.

But wait… isn’t Illinois sorta located in the middle part of the US? Can private jets even land there? Can she hire a local guide? Will the natives be restless?

  19. 19 biohazzarddiva Jul 1st, 2009 at 5:10 pm

Yes, the Brits are so much more sophisticated than Americans in manners of dreadful dentistry, and football hooliganism.

I had a power outage halfway through typing the comment. Apparently I need to reboot the old cranium too.

  21. 21 AllyKat Jul 1st, 2009 at 5:38 pm

While there are many buildings and structures that are quite old in Europe, the ones that are in decent shape are that way because they belonged to the nobility/aristocracy/upper classes, and have generally been extensively modified. The ones that look “old” are usually ruins or restored to look like they did at a certain time period. Much of European culture that is so famous and celebrated is actually about as old as the US/colonies. The more I learn about celebrated customs, the more I am convinced that very little is ancient. Even if something is based on something ancient/Middle Ages, it has often been readopted fairly recently. Except for war. The Europeans totally beat us on that one.

Also: New York and LA are not normal. The American lifestyle is not defined by those two cities, no matter what they say. And the reason Gwyneth’s family in the US doesn’t want to spend time with her is that she is a stuck up twit, not that they are running with the Blackberry. Well, okay. They ARE running AWAY from her and filing restraining orders with the Blackberry. Can you blame them?

  22. 22 Kristine Jul 1st, 2009 at 5:39 pm

Because buildings from 500 BC are what make the world go ’round, and prim and proper etiquette and discussion. Wow, I’m so glad she’s looking into the important things in life.

Also so thankful she pointed out that Spain is different than the United States. Oh, and that they “seemed” to have a history. Oh, and then such an intelligent statement about “years and year and years old.” So eloquent. I’m not sure how she missed the really old buildings in New York (’cause I sure didn’t), but maybe if she got out of California more often and saw the “fly over states” she hates even more than America itself she’d see some old stuff. I mean, I know the first concrete street in America a couple miles down the road from 1891 isn’t a gazillion years old or the courthouse from 1870, but I do know that stuff is more than 17 years old. I also know that outside New York and LA, not everyone is glued to their blackberries — except the liberals, checking for the latest message from their messiah.

Sorry, her statements really annoyed me…

  23. 23 Stan Jul 1st, 2009 at 5:43 pm

We’re hating on the pompous Americans that pretend to be Brits.

  26. 26 BB Jul 1st, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Um, Americans are busy WORKING (I know this is a new concept to her), which is why they are always running around busy. Something to do with this new-fangled technology called the “internet” and the “cell-phone” keeping them tied to their jobs 24/7.

And, since when is NYC = America? Never, in my book. They are by far the EXCEPTION, not the rule.

She needs to get dirty in real America. Maybe work on a 200 year old pig farm in Alabama. Then she can view “history” for herself.

Tobby Kebbell, Charlie Hunnam…mmm…Charlie Hunnam. I watched that horrendous, unrealistic, offensive on every level “Green Street Hooligans” failure of a movie just because he was in it.

The United States is only about 230 years old, Europeans encountering the continent occurred a little over 500 years ago. You complain about the lack of really, really old buildings and culture? Blame it on the European interlopers you love so much.

Perhaps if Miss Paltrow would take the time to drive outside of LA or NY city limits she might find the more relaxed, cultured, and dignified lifestyle she desires. As a resident of the south I can give her several great places to venture that are full of history (ie. old buildings) and rich with hospitality, grace, and relaxation. First stop on her tour of the “REAL AMERICA” (ie. anywhere outside NY or LA)… Charleston, SC. Then take the short drive to Savannah, GA. Then follow the road (I-95) to St. Augustine, FL. In a few short hours on one straight road you can get a ton of what she says does not exist in the good ol’ US of A.

She’s right that it’s nice to have a bit of history around,
that’s why I love Philadelphia. It is also true that there
is a more relaxed lifestyle in Spain. She’s wrong that the
English are more intelligent than Americans. They are not
only not more intelligent than Americans, they’re not more
intelligent than anybody; in fact, they are rather thick
-headed, and what passes as intelligent conversation in
England is usually some admixture of nasty remarks about
others and idiotic re-hashing of whatever they heard on
the BBC that day. Soon enough, the dying cultures of England
and Spain will be replaced by the tyrany of Islam, so Ms.
Paltrow will either have to don a burka or content herself
with living in the US, or maybe Australia.

It’s that arrogance that has made the U.S disliked.

The U.S didn’t join the allie’s until pearl harbour. By then the Battle of Britain had taken place.
The U.S did make a difference, fresh legs, new equipment, war weary had kicked in .Unlike Iraq the soldiers didn’t rotate every six months.

Veteran’s here can not believe that some Americans have that attitude.
They know that the real hero’s are the ones that were left behind whatever the nationality.

The Marshall plan did help re build the country. But we paid for it.

It was only in 2006 that the war debt was finally paid off to the U.S .

A commenter above declared that Great Britain can keep everything about Gwynneth, and you’re welcome to it! Everything except Iron Man, that is.

Well I agree. And as to Iron Man, replace her in that, too. Who cares whether the Stupid Blonde One plays Tony Stark’s love interest/secretary/woman thing or not? Plenty of other actresses can handle that role. Maggie Gyllenhall would be just fine. But please, not Scarlett Johannsen.

Wasn’t she America’s Sweetheart once upon a time? Like Jennifer Aniston… that no one seems to like anymore either, and Meg Ryan after it became apparent she wasn’t so sweet and innocent (adultery… though I’d contemplate adultery with Russel Crowe too). American sweethearts, it seems to me as not an american (I’m from South Africa), become un-american sweethearts sooner or later. Was bound to happen to an airhead like her anyway. never liked her acting or her looks… she always seems so condescending.

    Hey Gwyneth,

There is a place just like you describe where – “They aren’t running around as much as in New York. They enjoy time with the family. They don’t always have their BlackBerry on.” – here in America, it’s that whole area in the middle you and your friends call “flyover country”!!!

  59. 59 Jannah Jul 2nd, 2009 at 11:20 am

Right, Hmmm, Allykat, and Anon etc.! The US has many examples of ancient structures, all there waiting for her to explore them. My upstate NY church will celebrate its 250th anniversary next year, she should go there too.

Goopie should spent as much time figuring out why she hates America, as she spends on wondering why poeople hate her, but that would take some genuine intropsection, not the phony kind of self promoting analysis that she spouts on her website. :-p

Don’t forget about Bennie Hill, Dr. Who, and Masterpiece Theater, CaliforniaDave! All my favorites. :-)

  60. 60 Balrog Jul 2nd, 2009 at 11:26 am

Yes, Europe does have a great History and culture. Too bad they are ready to sell it out to whatever invader comes along. I don’t hate England, I have friends there. I felt the recent death of Mollie Sugden more than Michael Jackson or Farrah Fawcett. But England seems Hell bent on sell themselves to the Muslims. That’s not the fault of the Muslims, they are taking advantage of an opportunity. It’s the fault of the British elites who are doing it, and the ordinary folks who won’t stand up and tell them to GET STUFFED!

Second point is that contrary to elitist opinion, America does have a Culture. It is culture that does need to be apoligized for, and is worth defending.

I could give a rats ass what GP says or does with other peoples money. Basically the reason she doesn’t live in most of the European countries she mentioned can be summed up in one word, TAXES.

Notice how most of the British and Canadian actors we see in the movies and TV don’t live in their birth countries, because they would be paying 50% more taxes over there than they would here. Yes they still retain their dual citizenship and can keep a summer home over there but even Ozzy and Sharon don’t live in England for the simple reason that America is MUCH cheaper and the taxes can be avoided with lots of loop holes they don’t have in England and Europe.

  63. 63 AllyKat Jul 2nd, 2009 at 12:34 pm

    Re: maggie’s comments

I certainly didn’t mean to offend anyone from the UK/Europe. Heaven knows, if I had Gwenyth’s money, I’d spend a few years just touring villas, chateaus and castles. My point was that culture constantly evolves, and traditions are not always followed continuously. I was thinking in particular of a visit to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival a few years ago. Scotland was one of the countries being spotlighted, and I was struck by how many traditions didn’t come into being until the 1700s or 1800s, making them around the same age as America.

Also, many traditions are not always practiced by a large segment of the population. Take Maypoles, for instance. How many people actually erect a Maypole in their town square and dance around it every May 1st? I am sure that some places do so, but that is a fairly well known tradition that most people don’t practice. I remember dancing around one in preschool, but I don’t think that qualifies me to claim that I am a practitioner of a centuries-old tradition. Kilts are not worn everyday by most Scotsmen (so I hear, I have not taken a scientific poll), and though some men do wear them for formal or ceremonial occasions, there are probably just as many men who don’t ever wear one. This doesn’t invalidate the traditions, but a great many are only practiced occasionally or at certain times of the year. This is true everywhere.

At any rate, it does beg the question: what defines culture and tradition? How many people need to follow it and for how long, before a practice is considered entrenched in society? If no one practices it for a few centuries, then someone resurrects it, is it still a tradition that goes back to X time period? If transplanted to a different country, can that country then claim the tradition as being X years old, or does the clock reset when the tradition is imported? Discuss amongst yourselves. :)

  64. 64 Ropeadope Jul 2nd, 2009 at 1:45 pm

Thing about Gwynerth is she keeps running her mouth over in the US about the culture in Europe and how wonderful it all is and, when she gets to the UK, it’s “Oh, you can;t get a good workman here, the hospitals are awful” yadda yadda yadda. I wish she would make her mind up – that, and go away somewhere and not come back.

Well, if we’re talking about the tradition of collectively rolling our eyes AUDIBLY at GOOP’s dumbassery, and then wishing she’d eat a big bag of crap and then die, I’d say the tradition, which began in the US, is now going strong, concurrently, in the UK. I bet that on this one tradition, the UK would be just dandy if we claim to have started it.

  66. 66 Beige Jul 2nd, 2009 at 2:14 pm

Wonder how long THAT status quo will last…Oh, wait–for celebrities, it probably won’t change at all.

  67. 67 Aleric Jul 2nd, 2009 at 2:26 pm

Lol, true Beige, if the taxes keep rising here it may be more prudent to move to the old world culture to save your Obama Bucks.

While the rest of us pleibs have to suffer since we can’t afford to move.

  68. 68 MC Mom Jul 2nd, 2009 at 3:52 pm

I’d let Gwyneth know about the all the historical gems and culture in Boston, but we really don’t want her here.

The U.K. is awesome, crooked teeth, football hooligans and all. I especially appreciate their willingness to share their hot male actors with us. Thanks, Brits!

  69. 69 TrojanPrincess Jul 2nd, 2009 at 5:10 pm

I’ve always wished America had an ancient kind of history and culture, the way Asia does, but we’re a young country and that’s all there is to it. I love to travel and admire old buildings and different cultures, but I would never trade places. I love my country way too much. I only hope the things that make it great aren’t completely ruined by this new socialist administration. Pretty soon, we’ll be enough like Europe that GOOP will feel comfortable living here again.

  70. 70 Pinandpuller Jul 2nd, 2009 at 8:39 pm

If anyone here is feeling particularly down on the Brits, as we have apparently been accused of, you should check out a movie called “The Children of Huang Shi”. If you liked “Chariots of Fire” you will love this movie. If you know what happened to Eric Liddle you will also see parallels between him and George Hogg.

And for MC Mom-Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is a fairly handsome chap(he was the coach in “Bend it Like Beckham”). He’s kind of like the UK’s version of Michael Weatherly from NCIS.
And for the lads, Rhada Mitchell and gun porn (Arasaka, stuff from COD V).

Another good distraction is Greg Gutfeld’s book “Lessons from the Land of Pork Scratchings”. A ripping good read.

  71. 71 Thatisall Jul 2nd, 2009 at 8:51 pm

Sooooo … as history goes, I guess Gwynie doesn’t have a problem with the Spanish Inquisition, multiple barbaric hourdes invasions, Irish oppression of the Brits … Brit opression of the Irish, Mongol Invasions, the actual ‘burning at the stake’ of accused ‘witches’ and gays … ‘drawing and quartering’, beheading, serfdom, Hitler/Nazis …

    Oh! The BUILDINGS!!!

Okay … yeah, all she needs to know about history in other countries she ‘feels’ by looking at their buildings … Cool. Shallow and dim … But ‘cool’ for someone so self-centered and limo-lib pampered.

So, why does someone like her get so upset when I state ‘all I need to know about Islam I learned on 9/11′ … atleast in regard to buildings and ‘history’?

  72. 72 Jannah Jul 2nd, 2009 at 11:30 pm

Pin, I loved “The Children of Huang Shi”, it made me cryyyyyyyyyy. Hogg was an amazing person. I never knew anything about him before the movie.

Hey, we love the Brits here, they are our WW2 buddies. The war would have gone on a lot longer had America and England not worked together so well. That makes us brother-countries forever in my book. Also makes me sad to see the radical Left and Muslums seemingly taking over the UK. I know, that’s not very PC to say. :-(

  73. 73 Pinandpuller Jul 3rd, 2009 at 2:51 am

    Jannah

The Brits burned our White House because they didn’t want us to have any old buildings someday! We let it go. It’s all good.

Your point about the Muslims is well made. It all comes down to liberal immigration, lack of assimilation and demographics. Mark Steyn pretty much said it all in “America Alone”.

The Muslims are outbreeding the hell out of everyone else. In the UK, France and Scandinavia whole neighborhoods are being taken over block by block. EMS and cops are afraid to go certain places.

    It’s almost like Oklahoma.

Jul 2nd, 2009 at 12:34 pm Take Maypoles, for instance. How many people actually erect a Maypole in their town square and dance around it every May 1st? I am sure that some places do so, but that is a fairly well known tradition that most people don’t .

Unfortunately i have seen grown men in shorts prancing around a pole with ribbons.Therapy followed.
We don’t want to retain that tradition and have re introduced the death penalty for this crime.

Americans tourists flock to the U.K because of the history of the monarchy. The U.S laps up the period drama’s.

Holloywood movies, henry v11 ,Elizabeth 1, Anne Boylin ,Queen Victoria shows an interest in our history.

Some are not critising our past or taxes, they are making personal attacks on us, this is between you all and Gweenie.

I have just heard that we have just lost two more soldiers in Afghanistan. I am not sure what their teeth were like-there is not much left.

They were carrying on the tradition of fighting along side American troops. ‘Shoulder to shoulder’,remember?

  75. 75 Lara Jul 3rd, 2009 at 10:24 am

Reading some of the comments on this page is making my blood boil. What the HELL is wrong with Muslims being assimilated into my society? What century are you people from exactly? Are you still lumbering along with the forced marriages, honour killings, suicide attackers, religious extremist stereotype?

Generally speaking they’re such polite, hard-working and decent people they put the typical white British person to shame.

I can’t even think straight to write a proper reply to this.

Still, I don’t suppose it would make a difference no matter how eloquent so I won’t waste my words. I know Deceiver is a right-wing blog but that’s no excuse for ignorance.

  76. 76 Baba Yaga Jul 3rd, 2009 at 10:29 am

This condescending, pompous twit gets on my last nerve. GOOPy has never done a day’s *real* work in her life and has never had to worry about money. She had her career handed to her, since her mother is a successful actress and her father was a well-known director. She has no clue how a majority of Americans live, which explains her whining about Americans discussing work and money. She has disdain for capitalism, but she wouldn’t be where she is without capitalism.

I don’t mind that she appreciates Britain and Spain. I do mind her constant put-downs and general ignorance about America and Americans. Because of her privileged, sheltered existence, all she knows of America is LA, New York and a stereotyped view of “flyover country”.

  77. 77 Simon Scowl Jul 3rd, 2009 at 10:57 am

What the HELL is wrong with Muslims being assimilated into my society?

Nothing. The problem is those who refuse to assimilate.

I can’t even think straight to write a proper reply to this.

    Clearly.

What the HELL is wrong with Muslims being assimilated into my society?

Nothing…the problem is that some do not assimilate, but yet they are being coddled by the gov’t. An example is sharia courts. There are forced marriages and honor killings. These things occur…they are not just stereotypes.

  79. 79 Lara Jul 3rd, 2009 at 12:13 pm

But as you both say, these people are the exception, not the rule, and it’s unfair to write off a whole demographic as being ‘bad’ for a country when they’re anything but.

I’m sorry I came over overly-argumentative about this. Some of my closest friends, co-workers and neighbours are Muslims and I just find their religion/race to be such a minor issue it upsets me when people stir up such vitriol against them. The overwhelming majority have done nothing to deserve it.

Simon, I’ve been a Deceiver-lurker long enough to it’s your style, but I don’t think I deserved that just for disagreeing with you.

Anyway, that’s all I’m going to say. I love Deceiver and don’t want to fall out with anyone.

    Then calm down.

  81. 81 Jannah Jul 3rd, 2009 at 4:17 pm

Apologies Lara if my wording wasn’t clear. I personally meant the ‘radical Left and radical Muslims’. The way I worded it may not have been clear that I meant the radical factions of both groups, not just the Left, that want to force their oppressive and restrictive rules (e.g. Sharia law) on free civilization as we know it today (i.e., the entire world).

BabaYaga’s right, Goopie makes such a big deal about how horrible America is, that it get’s our undies in a bunch so much defending our country, that it makes us sound like we don’t like Europeans, which is not the case with anyone here I’m sure of that. I wish that there was some way that we could collectively contact her and let her know how we feel. That is, to direct our feelings about her ignorance to her personally, but she seems like such a dunce that it would be a wasted effort. She’d just say that we’re jealous. :-p maybe there is something that we could send to her in the mail in protest, that’s specific to her, and then she’d get tons of it. We could start a pro-America, anti-Goop postal movement! X-D

Right Pin, that White House burning stuff was a long time ago during that 1812 skirmish, we can overlook that. We fight together now! :-)

Pinandpuller (#70), Rhys-Meyers is fairly hot but as Deceiver has documented, has a bit of a problem with alcohol. My preference is for Toby Stephens, Matthew Macfadyen and Charlie Cox. Yum!

Lara, I think you’ve put your finger on the fact that Muslim immigration in Europe is a complex issue, and most immigrants are hard-working and decent people. But in some countries, it seems that the ‘ghettoization’ of some immigrants has resulted (in part) in increased radicalization and an unwillingness to tolerate different points of view…look at the murder of Theo van Gogh in the Netherlands and the outcry over the Danish cartoons.

  84. 84 Minnow Jul 3rd, 2009 at 7:21 pm

Please don’t tell me, MC, that you liked Macfadyen’s attempt at Mr. Darcy?

Although… that strut through the morning mist with his long jacket and no cravat was a great shot, almost rivaling Colin Firth after his pond dive… sigh.

James Murray (from Primeval), James Purefoy, and oddly, Robson Green for me.

  85. 85 Jannah Jul 3rd, 2009 at 7:47 pm

LOL Beige! X-D If it didn’t cost too much, perhaps we could send her thousands of little tubs of Dippity-Doo (i.e., GOOP). Hey, isn’t there a glue remover called Goop?!

If I’ve understood his young life thus far correctly, Rhys-Meyers has had a few more problems then just alcohol. I’m hoping that as he ages he can get his own self together and mature into a decent humble actor. Someone that beautiful who gets attention and fame so fast, doesn’t get a chance to grow up quickly enough sometimes.

  86. 86 Beige Jul 3rd, 2009 at 9:28 pm

For the record, I don’t hate Brits either. I think Sean Bean is probably the best actor on either side of the Atlantic.

    Oooh, I love Mr. Bean!

  88. 88 Pinandpuller Jul 4th, 2009 at 5:40 am

Wow, so many male British actors-so little estrogen.

I can’t imagine how tough it must be for a Brit to overcome a low tolerance to alchohol. I wish nothing but the best for Rhys-Meyers because I did enjoy Beckham and Huang Shi.

Sean Bean? One movie worth checking out is “Far North”. I’m not even gonna spoil it for ya.

Mr. Bean? Rowan Atkinson is to Monty Python what Iron Maiden is to The Beatles. Two words: “Keeping Mum”.

Colin who? Two more words, sounds like “In Bruges”. Who would have thought that an Irishman in Belgium could personify Gwynneth Paltrow’s ugly American who doesn’t care about old buildings in Europe…or whatever.

And he brings it back on topic…

  89. 89 Jannah Jul 4th, 2009 at 12:11 pm

    LOL friends!

Well, let’s include UK/European actors in general, I’m all for ‘em!! Take the first Highlander movie for instance, or any James Bond, or most any Dr. Who……(insert Eartha Kitt growl).

    :-x

    So true Pin! :-)

  90. 90 Diane C. Jul 4th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

I’m not sure how to put this exactly, but the majority of the Hollywood people move ot Europe to social climb. They think that by bashing the US and following vegan diets they’re emulating the upper class and will therefore be accepted by them.

If celebs were accepted by the elite of say, Tibet, then all of them would move there en masse and sing the praises of Tibet to the high heavens. But since in America, the upper classes they are desperate to join look down on them, they leave America and go to Europe.

Thankfully however, they aren’t accepted there either, since the upper classes (to my knowledge) tend to be traditional and conservative, plus a long lineage of military service.

Gwyneth, like a lot of celebs, have money and fame, but not the respect/gravitas that they yearn for. Gwyneth also looks down on people who make a living, thinking that this will integrate her even more with the elite, ironically.

However, she makes her money in a profession which is no different from prostitution and therefore, for all her money, makes her just as disreputable as her peers, if not worse because in a lot of civilzed countries, she is the daughter of a prostitute (mother was an actress) and is therefore stigmatized twice over.

She went to Spence, but anyone with money can go to these places.

Minnow, I hate to break it to ya, but I liked Macfadyen in the most recent ‘P and P.’ Not that I don’t like Colin Firth, mind you, being a straight female and all…

Pinandpuller, there are a number of really good UK actresses as well – Kate Winslet immediately springs to mind. And have you seen the ‘Blackadder’ series with Rowan Atkinson? Freakin’ hilarious.

Hey…shall we start a fan club for her? Maybe that would make her feel better about herself.

I liked Macfadyen in the most recent ‘P and P’.

Ugh. He drained every speck of humor from the role.

Gotta hand it to him though, that kid can sure act. I totally believed he was in love with the broomstick.

Too much brooding though. I kept waiting for Darcy to wander aimlessly the moors and dig up Elizabeth’s corpse to whisper sweet nothings in her long dead ear.

  98. 98 Sudcoree Jul 10th, 2009 at 12:05 am

I don’t know why everyone is so defensive of our USA cause Ms. Gwyneth Full-of-Herself says she likes Spain better because the people are more relaxed and the building are older. No problem. She can have those old buildings and the siesta. Most of those old buildings were built by men in homage to their egos. I’ll stay here, proud of Thomas Jefferson, who said all men are created equal. (By the way, have you seen his home, Monticello, and all his innovations and ideas? Do you know thomas Jefferson? Check out this blog about him–a fast and easy read: kalman.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/25/time-wast es-too-fast/?em. ) Before Thomas Jefferson, those little kings thought their nation and its people were their possessions to trample all over at will. As if that wasn’t enough those little kings tried to grab more. I’ll stay here in the land of George Washington who defeated the mighty British (who defeated the Spanish). He reluctantly agreed to be president of a new nation after which, rather than trying to hang on to power, he went home to farm. I’ll stay here in the land of Madison, Monroe, Lincoln, Roosevelt. . .need I say more? Stay there with your old buildings, Gwyneth — I’ll stay here proud to be in the land of men who didn’t need to build buildings to themselves. Their legacy isn’t some grand old building but freedom for all.

  99. 99 Beige Jul 10th, 2009 at 8:25 am

    Sudcoree, that was spot-on.

I hope Gwyneth made it to the running of the bulls. I heard someone lost to a bull, and I was DESPERATELY hoping it was her.
