Greenpeace Cleans Up Environment By Littering

If there’s one way to get people to stop polluting the environment, it’s by defacing public property with garbage:

rushmore

That’s real, not a Photoshop. And Greenpeace is so proud of this stunning acheivement, it’s on the front page of their site. But the National Park Service wasn’t so amused:

Greenpeace activists were arrested Wednesday for scaling Mount Rushmore and hanging a banner next to the carved face of Abraham Lincoln urging President Barack Obama to get tough on climate change.

A video posted on the environmental group’s website showed the massive banner hanging on the South Dakota mountain face.

Its message — “America honors leaders not politicians: Stop Global Warming” and an unfinished portrait of Obama — was barely visible as it was whipped by wind…

“Early this morning visitors saw these individuals on the mountain,” said Amy Bracewell, a spokeswoman for the National Park Service.

“They got up next to Abraham Lincoln and unfurled the large banner,” she told AFP.

“As soon as our people were mobilized we took down the banner and apprehended them and got them safely down the mountain.”

Too bad. Note to Greenpeace: If global warming is caused by humans, and you’re humans, then the best way to use Mount Rushmore to promote your cause isn’t to hang some dumb banner. You’d be doing a lot more to save the environment if you used George Washington’s nose as a slide.

“Wheeeee!!” Splat. No more carbon footprint. Plus, you’d be providing valuable nutrients to the local flora and fauna. Please consider it.

Yesterday it was Al Gore saying people who disagree with him are like the Nazis, and now this. Why is it that the closer the WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE FROM GLOBAL WARMING crowd gets to achieving their goals, the more desperate they’re acting? Force of habit?

P.S. If you’re expecting one man on Earth not to behave like a politician, boy oh boy, did you pick the wrong guy.

“We had to destroy the environment to save it.”

  2. 2 Tuffgong Jul 8th, 2009 at 10:43 pm

This kind of stuff reminds me of the popular non sequiter logic robots have in fiction with the whole “we had to destroy it to save it” line. Thanks for bringing that up California Dave.

Don’t these guys have better things to do, like a day job? Or is it their day job to act like radical morons and get arrested?

  3. 3 Ben Jul 8th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

// Don’t these guys have better things to do, like a day job? //

Jobs!? C’mon, they’re busy saving the planet and stuff – that’s what gov’t checks are for!

  4. 4 AllyKat Jul 8th, 2009 at 11:15 pm

How much carbon did they spew into the air in order to get to Mount Rushmore? I doubt they biked there. Even using the anchors that are already in place, damage would still be done to the monument. It might only be light erosion (at best), but it is still more than would occur if people STAYED OFF THE MONUMENT LIKE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO. They also wasted the time (and money) of the Park Service and put the PS workers at unnecessary risk.

Waste your own time and resources, not that of the taxpayers and civil servants!

I was really disappointed when I saw a link to the story on another site. I was hoping for a massive “vandalism” sign stretching across both side of the monument. Instead I got a dinky little banner. Today’s activists have no balls.

Whoops. Sorry about the last word. “no guts” perhaps?

  7. 7 Hmmm... Jul 9th, 2009 at 1:03 am

    Ben,

“Jobs!? C’mon, they’re busy saving the planet and stuff – that’s what gov’t checks are for!”

Indeed. I think that the government should write off some of the funds they use to give the sorts of people who protest instead of getting jobs as being used for environmental protection. Though that would create some kind of cycle as higher numbers may (though probably not) reduce the number of such protesters which will in turn reduce the money spent on them again which will cause another increase in protesters. But at least we’ll have those occasional valleys in their numbers to look forward to.

Anyway, this whole situation is a bit frustrating to me. I’m a South Dakota native (and here for another week before classes start again) and hate what was done to the monument. It’s kind of a big thing for South Dakota since, at least to most people’s eyes, we don’t have much else. It’s not something that should be used for political agendas. It should be an inspirational symbol for the ideals of the country as a whole, not a tool of persuasion towards narrow-minded, group-based ideals. But maybe that’s just me

  9. 9 Good Lt. Jul 9th, 2009 at 8:23 am

    There is no global warming.

The world hasn’t warmed in a decade, going on 11 years now. The science and data supports this assertion.

    Morons. It’s now “climate change.”

Try to keep up with your own half-baked propaganda, you dirty, Luddite granola-munchers.

And get Obama’s mug off of Mount Rushmore. That space is reserved for America’s greatest leaders, not for two-bit Chicago corripticrats.

Using his nose as a slide – awesome! I wonder if they carried their trash out with them as well when they left the park. These people have no idea that what they are doing are hurting the cause more than helping. Jessica Alba? Al Gore? Are just plain idiots.

  11. 11 LN Jul 9th, 2009 at 9:08 am

The park should charge “greenturds” for the cost of getting their rangers out there and “rescuing” them. I certainly don’t think my dollars should go to their rescue. I know, next time they need “rescuing” we should put it to a Deceiver vote.

Who wants to bet that PEBO was never shown this by his handlers?

  13. 13 Minnow Jul 9th, 2009 at 10:09 am

How the heck did they get up there without anyone noticing?

I once chatted with a guy who was on the team that monitors the facial cracks (they tried filling in cracks back in the 50’s, the filler is now doing damage). He made it seem like 90% of the job was getting there and back.

If I recall correctly, they approach from the backside of the mountain, up and over the peak, then down to the large ledge just above the faces. From there they rappel down the foreheads. The entire frontside is rubble and completely spotlighted at night. It’s not like you can dance around up there under the cover of complete darkness.

And it seems like July is prime tourist season, so you’d think they have full staff wandering around, both day and night shifts.

I say we send ‘em all over Niagara in a balsa wood barrel for their next Eco-Stunt.

  14. 14 LN Jul 9th, 2009 at 11:17 am

Watched a program on the falls. Because of the stupid stunts people do, they have installed a shut off valve which stops the flow of the water over the falls. All this is done to rescue idiots. It also said the main reason the people die is lack of oxygen in the wood barrel after the fall down the falls and before barrel is able to be opened.

Chairman O stated that the average American would not bear the brunt of this historic tax-increase, claiming instead that: “It is paid for by the polluters who currently emit dangerous carbon emissions.”

Just compare this blatant falsehood to Ronald Reagans’ timeless wisdom:

“The most dangerous myth is the demagoguery that business can be made to pay a larger share, thus relieving the individual. Politicians preaching this are either deliberately dishonest, or economically illiterate, and either one should scare us.

…Only people pay taxes, and people pay as consumers every tax that is assessed against a business.”

And after the way they rammed this stuff through the House with little debate, without legislators even reading it… and while quarantining the GOP from any meaningful input whatsoever, any foolhardy individuals who still believe Obama’s threadbare “bipartisanship” spiel ought to have their head examined.

  16. 16 Beige Jul 9th, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Simon, I got hearts shootin’ out my eyes in your direction right now, just like when Bugs Bunny diverts Taz by dressing up as a she-Taz.

That made sense in my head.

Yeah, they picked the wrong guy, the wrong place, and the wrong issue. WHY aren’t these f@$ktards looked down upon as they should be, the way Westboro Baptist Church deservedly is? Is there any real, substantive difference between the two groups? One says ugly, vile things at servicemember funerals; the other screws with national monuments and essentially acts cataclysmically stupid. Both groups could best serve the public by locking themselves in a sarin-filled room.

  17. 17 Holly Won't Jul 9th, 2009 at 2:02 pm

Wait, are you She-Taz or regular Taz?

  18. 18 Beige Jul 9th, 2009 at 2:22 pm

See, that’s what I meant by “That made sense in my head.”

  19. 19 Minnow Jul 9th, 2009 at 4:18 pm

Watched a program on the falls. Because of the stupid stunts people do, they have installed a shut off valve which stops the flow of the water over the falls.

Was that in the same episode as She-Taz?

I urge those of you curious about the minds of these wackjobs to go to the library and get a copy of Edward Abbey’s books “Desert Solitaire” and “The Monkey-Wrench Gang.” These are the books that just about every greentard worth his hemp undershorts has on his bookshelf and quotes at every opportunity. Yet even the goofiest granola-munchers at my very liberal college had fun mocking Edward Abbey. Also, pick up a copy of Paul Ehrlich’s “The Population Bomb” and laugh some more (note that he is an entomologist, yet that makes him a fine “scientist” of population growth trends– Al Gore quotes him all the time).

But if you want any reasonable honesty about “climate change,” go get Bjorn Lomborg’s book “Be Cool,” where he explains that we should probably be careful about polluting but not kid ourselves about “green” celebrities and their dire warnings. Obama appointed Lomborg to advise the administration on environmental policy, but so far he has dutifully ignored him.

And last of all, if you need a beach book, go for PJ O’Rourke’s “All the Trouble In the World.” He coined the term “fashionable worries,” and while some of his facts are outdated and his bias is certainly evident, it’s a lot of funny stuff for people who get sick of being told every minute of every day that WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE OF [insert fashionable worry here].
