PETA Founder Wishes PETA Could Be Less Controversial

naked-peta-protestIngrid Newkirk sat down with Montel Williams yesterday to chat about the “Save the Whales” billboard you all know and love. She tried the “think of the children” rationale for proselytizing vegetarianism, which is bullcrap because the billboard also taught kids it’s OK to call fat beachgoers “whales.”

Montel tried to get Newkirk to admit that she was trying to get a reaction with this stupid message, but again, no dice:

MW: Ingrid, you have admit, come on, I’ve got it, you were controversial, you hit your home run, it went out of the park, I’m talking about it for three days. And the rest of America is going to keep talking about it. But the truth is, I think Joseph is right. Any child who would use that as a reason, or anybody who now says ‘those fat people are people who pick on animals,’ come on, we’ve got to slow down a little bit.

IN: I wish more than anything you can ever imagine that we could not be controversial, and we could not be provocative. I really do.

Really. Uh huh. Come on. Whatever, Ingrid. All PETA knows is the lowest common denominator, and here the freaking founder is saying she wishes they would tone it down. It’s not like she’s in charge or anything. But unfortunately, Newkirk’s selective memory appears to mean we can look forward to salacious stunts and naked celebrities for decades to come.

(Have to thank Jezebel for transcribing the interview, ’cause there’s no way my ears could take listening to those four minutes over and over.)

I’m trying to focus on what you’re saying, Holly, I really am. But I my eyes keep straying to the photo and my brain is practically crawling out of my skull to figure out what a naked woman behind bars getting her picture taken has to do with being nice to pigs.

And at the same time, I think I need some brain bleach. Yecch.

  2. 2 thatgengirl Aug 26th, 2009 at 5:27 pm

I think what she was trying to say was that she wished she lived in a world where doing something provocative or contraversial wasn’t necessary because animals were free and safe from the butcher’s knife and dog collar.

    Not my opinion, just inpterpreting.

  3. 3 angry army wife Aug 26th, 2009 at 5:28 pm

Me too MC Mom. Is she really naked in public? If so, that is cruelty to us humans. And they don’t want to be controversial? Is that why they have a murdering chicken staking out kids at McDonalds?

And I love Montel. I saw him in person a few months ago talking about his MS.

  4. 4 ganzagwenie Aug 26th, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Maybe because the naked girl is chubby… so she’s like… a pig, and if she were just a vegetarian… I have no idea.

In any case, I keep hearing all these PETA references to how if you don’t eat meat, you’ll be 10$ thinner than an omnivore. Can anyone point me to a non-PETA sponsored study that proves that?

  5. 5 ganzagwenie Aug 26th, 2009 at 5:45 pm

    10%, not 10$

  6. 6 Fortunate_Son Aug 26th, 2009 at 7:24 pm

They live and die on the free printed word. If we all quit mentioning their names, they would disappear,

  7. 7 Ducky Aug 26th, 2009 at 9:53 pm

    That picture makes me sick.

  8. 8 Bobby G. Keith Aug 26th, 2009 at 10:24 pm

I just wonder what they think about animals who eat other animals are they villains too?

  9. 9 Ln Aug 27th, 2009 at 7:31 am

    Ganza,

That person in the “jail” is a bit on the heavier side – so she can not be a vegetarian as espoused by Peta. But I do think it is funny that she is wearing nailpolish which was – probably – tested on animals.

  10. 10 Beige Aug 27th, 2009 at 8:10 am

This is really beside the point, but I have to wonder: Isn’t this indecent exposure? Or is she protected legally somehow b/c she’s protesting?

  11. 11 Hmmm... Aug 27th, 2009 at 9:00 am

    Beige,

It looks like she’s wearing some kind of bottom and, although I can’t see (and wouldn’t really want to anyway), she might have something covering her nipples even if not an actual bra or something of the sort. I think it depends on where you are exactly, but if I recall, some places only require the nipples and genitalia to be covered to avoid indecent exposure. However, I don’t recall which places nor where this picture was taken.

  12. 12 jenn Aug 27th, 2009 at 9:03 am

Protesters are not immune from the laws just because it is part of their crusade. PETA and Breasts Not Bombs protesters have been arrested for indecent exposure before – in the US anyways. Not sure where the picture was taken. May be different there.

  13. 13 Beige Aug 27th, 2009 at 9:42 am

Yeah, that’s what I thought. I’m old and figured the laws might have changed since the days when I was beta-testing rocks.

  14. 14 Angry Army Wife Aug 27th, 2009 at 10:13 am

besides the bright color of nail polish, I wonder if she got her blond hair naturally or if she dyed it and if so, with what? Also, what kind of shampoos does she use that were not tested on the loveable furry animals?

  15. 15 Beige Aug 27th, 2009 at 10:26 am

You know, I’m wondering if PETA is really just a front for pimping out naked chicks to guys who wanna work that eco-conscientious vibe. Have I missed a bunch of nude male celebrities posing for ads, or is it just chicas? (NOTE: This is most emphatically a “Be-careful-what-you-wish-for” scenario, because in all likelihood, the male celebrities stepping up to pose would be of the Harvey Keitel/Mickey Rourke/Tommy Lee variety, and the less of their sundried little soldiers I see, the happier I will be.)

  16. 16 Ln Aug 27th, 2009 at 10:35 am

You know that brings up a good point. I have seen Pam Anderson many times shilling for Peta, however, she has fake nails, boobs, hair color, probably hair. And best of all is being treated for an illness (hep C) that has used animal testing prior to allowing treatments being made for general use.

  17. 17 Beige Aug 27th, 2009 at 10:48 am

I bet it’s more the case that Hep C is being treated for a nasty case of Pamela Anderson. That’s hard to stamp out.

  18. 18 bigmama Aug 27th, 2009 at 11:36 am

It’s the one woman Jrod won’t hit.

  19. 19 Emerson Aug 27th, 2009 at 12:02 pm

The problem is that PETA is overrun with crazed housewives who can only get attention by topping each other in the crazed idea department.

  20. 20 Ln Aug 27th, 2009 at 12:07 pm

Hey now Emerson…I am a crazed housewife (its been a longer summer and in MI kids aren’t allowed to go back to school until after labor day.) but there is a limit to what I would do.

  21. 21 Pastafarian Aug 27th, 2009 at 12:31 pm

Is the tubby woman in the cage a vegetarian? If she is it isn’t working out for her. She should try jogging. Did someone already point that out? I can’t read 20 other comments I’ve gotta chest to shave.

There’s better ways of getting big boobs than packing on 25, or 30 pounds.

    Ln,

“I have seen Pam Anderson many times shilling for Peta, however, she has fake nails, boobs, hair color, probably hair. And best of all is being treated for an illness (hep C) that has used animal testing prior to allowing treatments being made for general use”

People who support PeTA probably get passes like that one higher up who uses insulin because her life is worth it as long as she spends it trying to save animals. I guess that they also need to use cosmetics and the such that have been tested on animals for the same reason. After all, if vegans looked like they naturally would without masks of chemicals on, their whole ‘vegetarianism is healthy’ argument and flashing pictures of ’sexy’ vegetarians would collapse. So really, the whole animal tested cosmetics thing is for the sake of the animals. As long as PeTA members are the only ones using them.

  24. 24 Simon Scowl Aug 27th, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Is the tubby woman in the cage a vegetarian? If she is it isn’t working out for her.

Presumably she’s a PETA intern, right? Seems a bit self-defeating. I mean, she’s cute and all, but if the idea is that you shouldn’t eat meat, well…

  25. 25 Pastafarian Aug 27th, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Alright I’ve done the math. For reference, the camera that guy is holding looks to be about 12 inches tall in total right? Judging by that measurement, the front bars of the cage that contain that manatee would then be roughly two and a half, to three times that or about 36 inches. It’s really just my best guess.

Now if you look towards the back of the picture, even allowing for the angle of the camera that took the photo we are seeing, that would make her rear end a whopping 30-36 inches ACROSS! It seems to span almost the entire inside width of the cage. C’mon peta you can do better. What, was Carmen Elektra to busy?

  26. 26 BB Aug 27th, 2009 at 3:59 pm

I don’t think she wants to tone it down. She wants the rest of the world to accept their view as mainstream so that it is no longer controversial. Completely different goal! God help us if THAT ever happens.

Naked women on all fours? Obviously it is OK to exploit women to gain attention, even if they have nothing to do with the cause. I guess all naked women are pigs or easily represent them. Their cruelty to humans know no bounds. Maybe they should whip her too! YEAH, that will really get us attention! This is NOT meant to be politically provocative or to start a conversation. It is performance art disguised as such & it doesn’t matter who gets hurt in the process (except to the animals they kill, of course!) This so reminds me of submission porn & they don’t even get it.

Ln – Yeah, PETA retards get a free pass on wearing, eating or using any product they want — as long as YOU don’t do it. Kind of like all the supposed *religious* celebrities (Mel Gibson, Scientolotards) who don’t have to follow the rules of the religion. As long as they are willing to schill for it and bring in the cash, God will give you a pass if you screw around on your wife or even beat/kill someone.

By the by… I was dumb enough not to know what pukka meant. Never heard of it before.

Can’t say that “authentic or genuine” means much to me in the context of pig treatment.

Although I do particularly enjoy that it’s based on the Sanskrit word “to cook”.

  28. 28 Koka Aug 27th, 2009 at 5:27 pm

Funny, you never see naked guys in cages for PeTA…unless someone has a link to one they’d like to share.

  29. 29 snapnhiss Aug 27th, 2009 at 9:56 pm

Sorry, but that beached whales slur has been around a looooong time… I was using it towards tourists in San Diego back in the 70s. That and ‘baked ham.’

  30. 30 AllyKat Aug 27th, 2009 at 10:46 pm

@ Bobby: A lot of radical animal “rights” groups do condemn carnivores. A group like PETA (might have been PETA, my source didn’t say) used to donate food for the National Zoo’s animals around Christmas, but they only donated food for herbivores. Apparently, not being able to survive on plants is not a good reason to eat meat.

They all need to watch the Lion King. Mufasa explains it all: Circle of Life!!!

  31. 31 Pearce Aug 27th, 2009 at 11:09 pm

PETA and its “only eat plants” vs. Al Gore.

I would pay to watch that.

  32. 32 MC Mom Aug 28th, 2009 at 9:55 am

Minnow, I know what ‘pukka’ means – barely – and it made me wonder if that lovely protest was held in Britain. Seems like something the UK animal crazies would pull…and they could probably do it without getting arrested over there.

Guys, let’s not keep bringing up the idea of naked guys shilling for PETA and give them ideas we’d rather not see in print. Beige, your ’sundried little soldiers’ comment had me snarfing my juice. Hee.

The whole thing reminds me of that ‘Arrested Development’ episode in which Lindsey does a solo protest about something and ends up getting hosed down in a cage.

  33. 33 BB Aug 30th, 2009 at 5:39 pm

snapnhiss – Duh! That phrase has been around forever. Not like you invented it or anything. The issue isn’t whether or not this is a NEW insult. Just that is is an insult & always has been.

  34. 34 Anonymous Sep 14th, 2009 at 6:39 pm

ganzagwenie – It is true about the people being skinnier…. because over 60% of vegitarians and vegans, have eating disorders and use it as a way to disguise it.

I didn’t even completely think that was true until I talked to my friends that were vegan and they admitted that was true. I was shocked.
