Family Values? Well, You Can’t Start a Family Without Some of This…

Hey, did you ever see those old Weekend Update segments with Chevy Chase? Sometimes he’d pretend to be on the phone with his girlfriend, talking dirty to her, before realizing he was on the air. Well, it looks like this Orange County, CA assemblyman wasn’t pretending, but he really was on a live microphone:

Yikes! At least Mark Sanford was a gentleman about it.

According to the LA Times:

An Orange County lawmaker who inadvertently broadcast explicit remarks about his sexual conquests over an open microphone during a lull in a Sacramento hearing abruptly resigned from office this afternoon.

Assemblyman Mike Duvall (R-Yorba Linda) stepped down after legislative leaders stripped him of his committee posts this morning and launched an ethics probe of his actions…

His remarks were caught on videotape during a July hearing of the Assembly Appropriations committee and aired on a KCAL television news report Tuesday night. In the videotape, the married, socially conservative Duvall talks with a colleague in uninhibited detail about his apparent trysts with two women, neither of them his wife…

The Capitol Resource Institute, a conservative, self-described “pro-family” advocacy organization that had given Duvall a “100%” score for his voting record on issues of concern to the group, denounced the lawmaker in a statement today. .

“It is always disappointing when a champion of traditional values does not practice the same in his private life,” said Karen England, executive director of CRI.

Ladies, if you see this man and he asks if you want to “get polled” or see his “hanging chads,” just vote Nay.

Natalie Portman Thinks the Recession Is ‘Exciting’

natalie-portman-diamondsNatalie Portman apparently lives locked in a beautiful ivory Harvard tower, far far away from things like debt collectors and foreclosure. Otherwise I can’t explain why she voiced this completely insouciant view of the economic climate:

“I think it’s kind of an exciting time. I mean, everyone is cutting back. It’s happening in every industry – including our own. All of a sudden, people are doing jobs that they hate and they’re not making as much money as they thought they would or they’ve lost their jobs entirely. I’ve started to see people looking more toward their own passions and what really excites them.”

It’s totally exciting to go without your medications because you can no longer afford them, right? You never know what might happen!

Unfortunately for Natalie, she doesn’t have such excitement in her life. Her fortunes are just fine, as evidenced by her purchase of a $3 million castle in a gated Los Angeles community last week.

And what housing bust? Her luxury Manhattan condo — complete with infinity lap pool and 32-foot balcony — sold for $6.5 million last November.

I don’t begrudge her enjoyment of the spoils of her success. But don’t tell the plebes that they are just so lucky to do without when you don’t have to so much as cancel your cable.

Obama Then And Now: Deficit Edition

Obama doublespeak continues to abound.  This week Congress and the Prez return to Washington to continue “addressing” our nation’s woes.  Up next: the deficit.

obamaYou might be a little worried that the federal debt is in the trillions (that’s this many zeroooooooooooos), and since that number is growing rapidly the Senate must consider legislation to raise the federal debt limit beyond $12.1 trillion by mid-October.  This is due to the President’s fat budget of more than $3.5 trillion, the largest in history, making this year’s $1.6 trillion deficit another record.

Sorry for all the big numbers.  Basically, we need to raise the debt ceiling so that we don’t default on our debt.  Obviously President Obama and his team are being vocal about the necessity of this so that the President can keep spending like a maniac.  The administration and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner are pushing for the debt ceiling to be increased ASAP.

But what happened back when we had a Republican president and President Obama was Senator Obama?  The Senate had to consider raising the debt ceiling in 2006 and Senator Obama took the opportunity to make a floor speech:

Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren.  America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership.

He obviously voted against raising the debt level.

But now that I’m President, I’m spending your money really quickly and I need you to raise the ceiling for me!  I’m the President so this is not a failure of leadership.  Pretty pretty please with hope, change, and a cherry on top!
