Michael Moore: Capitalist, Hater

oinkEverybody’s favorite mountain-sized Marxist millionaire, Michael Moore, is back again with a new mockumentary called Capitalism: A Love Story. (See, he’s being sarcastic there. Tee-hee!) Not to give anything away, but here’s the thesis of the porky populist’s new pic:

Blending his trademark humor with tragic individual stories, archive footage and publicity stunts, the 55-year-old launches an all out attack on the capitalist system, arguing that it benefits the rich and condemns millions to poverty.

“Capitalism is an evil, and you cannot regulate evil,” the two-hour movie concludes.

Which is why he has given away all his material possessions and is releasing the film to a grateful proletariat for free.

Just kidding! He’s a very wealthy capitalist businessman, and as the LA Times Company Town blog reports, his benefactor John Malone is even richer and more ruthless:

He’s been called a bully and a monopolist. Al Gore once labeled him “Darth Vader.” The Wall Street Journal described him as “ruthless” and alleged “self-dealing” in a maze of complicated business transactions. He is a master of the tax-free deal, completely disdains government and most federal regulations, and has expressed a fondness for Rush Limbaugh. This summer he was slapped with a $1.4-million fine by the Justice Department for illegal stock purchases.

Sounds like the perfect target for a hard-hitting Michael Moore documentary, no? But no, we’re talking about Moore’s latest sugar daddy: cable mogul John Malone.

That’s right, Moore’s “Capitalism: A Love Story” is being co-financed and distributed domestically by Overture Films, which is a unit of Malone’s Liberty Media. Moore, who has been railing against Big Media during press junkets promoting the movie, is in bed with the Goldman Sachs of the media world.

And in case you need yet another reminder that Moore is an astonishing hypocrite:

Obviously there is a little something ironic about Moore’s screed against capitalism being backed in part by one of the country’s richest and most avowed capitalists. Then again, Moore is nothing if not a paradox. Although he still keeps close ties to his home state of Michigan and has positioned himself as the voice of the common man, Moore is also a shrewd negotiator when it comes to his own vested financial interests. On his last film, “Sicko,” he received half of the documentary’s gross profit, as detailed in this Los Angeles Times piece. He doesn’t mind the perks that can come with being a big-shot moviemaker, such as the five-star hotel and the fancy car service.

Moore responds with some claptrap about “a more just and fair society,” and says rich people like him need to be in a 70% tax bracket.

Y’know, Mike, if you want to give most of your income to the government, I don’t think they’ll turn you down. How about letting the rest of us decide for ourselves? Maybe we’d like to keep, oh, at least half of what we’ve earned. Maybe we don’t need a bloated, self-loathing plutocrat sneering at us for being fat and greedy as he’s squeezing himself into a limousine.

And Mike, maybe you should get ready for this movie to bomb like most of your other ones have. You managed to wring as much cash as you could out of the last one, but how many people are going to pay to see a movie that attacks the very system that’s bringing it to them?

Look on the bright side, though, Mike: Maybe someday there’ll be another Republican in the White House and another mass murder for you to exploit for profit.

Update: I’m pretty sure GT didn’t miss anything.

He received half of the gross profits of “Sicko”? So what was that, like, 40 bucks?

  2. 2 Freak Show Sep 17th, 2009 at 5:20 pm

Everything about MM is hypocritical. It’s amazing so many people still don’t seem to realize it.

  3. 3 MG Casey Sep 17th, 2009 at 5:24 pm

Just a note on calling his other films “bombs,” he has made three of the top 6 grossing documentaries ever. Fahrenheit 9/11 was ginormous making over $114 million. Bowling for Columbine and Sicko both have very impressive grosses.

  4. 4 TheIrish Sep 17th, 2009 at 5:27 pm

“Documentaries” is the key word there MG Casey. Most people don’t make docs to make money. Then again, MM isn’t most people.

  5. 5 Simon Scowl Sep 17th, 2009 at 5:30 pm

    Bombs.

Although you do realize you’re trying to make him out to be an even bigger hypocrite, right?

Every time I see a picture of this nob, it makes me want to go all Pol Pot on his fat ass.
Every time I read an article of any sort on this fat ass, it makes me want to go midevil and put him in the iron maiden for a few decades. I figure that he could survive for a few decades on all that blubber.

  7. 7 GT Sep 17th, 2009 at 5:41 pm

    Let’s review, shall we?

Bowling For Columbine: Moore was, and still might be, a member of the NRA.

Sicko: Moore is morbidly obese, a preventable disorder which leads to Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease, and many forms of cancer.

Capitalism: A Love Story: Moore is, by his own admission, a multi-millionaire.

In sum: Michael Moore is a very wealthy individual who believes others have too much money, a man who lives in a world where his physical safety is ensured through doormen, bodyguards, and private security (many of whom have a license to carry a gun) but doesn’t think others should be able to protect themselves with firearms, and someone who uses the ministrations of private doctors and clinics to help him “treat” the “disease” of eating far, far, more calories than his body needs but wants to restrict access to health care choice from everyone else.

I am your second biggest fan. And as someone who is from Michigan and not too far from where his first lie was filmed. (Yes he did speak with Roger. That was his name right?) I can not stand the man.

If he was so into Flint, why not put a film festival there instead of in the swank vacation spot of Traverse City? Hmmm? Flint could sure use the money soooo much more than Traverse City. But I guess you are right he is, above all else, a pig. (Sorry Miss. Piggy.)

    Well put Scott F.
Moore says: “Capitalism is an evil, and you cannot regulate evil … You have to eliminate it and replace it with something that is good for all people and that something is democracy.”
Umm … how do you do business in a democratic way? How do we go about replacing an economic system with a political one?
You know there are going to be idiots going ‘Yah’ at the movie screen while they fail to get the irony of the dreck they are watching and that they just paid $10 bucks for the privilage.

Okay, guys, I’m taking opinions. The Christmas before last Christmas, my family was having this anonymous gift-exchange thing and I ended up getting stuck with Sicko. Never watched it, no plans to watch it, but I still have it because I don’t know what to do with it – I’m not about to inflict the guy on anyone else. Thoughts?

Tal – First, lend it to your friends who haven’t seen it, but express an interest in it. (It’s also a good discussion starter). When done, give it to a library. That way people can evaluate it for themselves & never have to fork a penny over to MM. (I buy tons of art-related books a year, and I often get thanks from friends who have not had to fork over their own money for the 90% of art books that are raved about in the press but turn out to be trash, it’s very satisfying)

This bloated two-faced oaf is an abomination! If he had any integrity he’d use it on himself and pass up that plate of cream puffs. He obviously doesn’t have the self control to keep his weight below a sveldt 400-pounds but he’s quick on his feet in telling others what to do. Watching his obese pink head sprouting out of his stretched-to-the-limit shirt collar is enough to take one’s appetite away; but apparently not his appetite. Oh the other thing that really rankles is always wearing his idea of what the common working man wears; jeans and a filthy ball cap. Man-oh-man, what a hypocritical piece of drek. Time to flush this offal!

  23. 23 Scott F. Sep 17th, 2009 at 9:21 pm

Tal – When it comes to improvising with God-awful music, movies, and software, the sky is the limit. Quite literally if you decide to use them for skeet shooting. I figured out all kind of useful tricks during the era of ‘Free AOL’ disks showing up in the mailbox four times a week.

Shaving mirror, mini-frisbee, drink coaster, stray cat repellent, ‘get off my lawn’ message delivery system – it can do it all!

As a shiny object they’re perfect for distracting hippies, college communists, and other mental defectives giving you time to find a more substantial object to beat them with. In a pinch they can be used as currency in some of the less advanced countries out there, like Djibouti, Azerbaijan, and Canada. A truly versatile product that’s as at home chopping tomatoes as it is blinding an insurgent sniper.

The key is to have fun with it.

I don’t know what’s more pathetic: the hypocritical nature of Moore making this movie or the utterly ridiculous, fear-instilling conclusion? Who says you can’t ‘regulate’ evil? Plus ‘evil’ is such a subjective, non-physical perception. Some people say movies and video games are evil.. aren’t there regulations there? If I said major league baseball is evil, would that mean it can’t be regulated?

Michael Moore is evil, and you can’t regulate evil.

See? What a ridiculous conclusion to make for an argument.

Moore lives in a lake front home on Torch Lake, one of the most desirable places to live in Michigan. The house is appraised for tax purposes at $650,000. Mikey’s neighbors are millionaires, well when they’re at their “cottages” on the lake, since many if not most of the homes on Torch Lake are second or third homes.

Mikey says that he lives in Traverse City or Bellaire, like he’s Hemmingway out in a cabin in the woods. He almost never mentions that he lives on Torch Lake because that’s not enough like the common man. BTW, Mikey’s never worked in a factory and he likes to make it seem like his dad was a factory rat, but his father was in management at GM, and Mikey grew up in upper middle class Davison, not working class Flint.

A hypocrite of the highest rank.

  29. 29 RNB Sep 17th, 2009 at 10:14 pm

I believe Moore was quoted as saying that businesses should be ‘cooperatives, with profits and decision-making distributed among all the workers.’ Which sure sounds like reports of what working for Moore’s production company sounds like. (Not.)

This champion of the oppressed regularly abuses employees and underlings, and did not respond well (to say the least) when a documentary filmmaker tried to give Moore the same treatment Moore used in “Roger & Me.”

    Dear Mr. Moore,

I wanted to let you know that the IRS gladly accepts any and all cash donations. You can in fact pay 70% of your total income in to the IRS at any time. But, if you really believe that capitalism is evil, how about you pledge to NEVER earn in any form, more than the AVERAGE AMERICAN wage. Yes, learn how to live on $40,000. Guess you will have to give up that big mansion that you received through all of your capitalistic means. Either walk the walk or STFU.

  39. 39 Evil Otto Sep 18th, 2009 at 6:45 am

Moore is a con man, nothing more and nothing less. He’s figured out a way to make millions of dollars by telling liberals exactly what they want to hear… make an occasional documentary, give speeches for tens of thousands of dollars per pop, and write a book once in a while, then live a life of luxury. That’s not even including the awards and the praise he receives.

Because he tells them what they wish to hear they do not demand that he actually live according to his principles. It’s the same scam Al Gore has perfected.

(This is not to say Moore doesn’t believe at least some of what he says. The human capacity of self-deception and hypocrisy is limitless.)

Fortunate Son – I have not heard that about the killer. I know he worked in the lab and would often get into arguments with people over how they kept the cages clean or not wearing covers on their shoes. Does not seem like an animal rights activist if he made sure the caged animals were kept clean. I would think he would release them all.

  46. 46 Ed Sep 18th, 2009 at 1:37 pm

Believe it or not folks, I do not like Michael Moore. However, I’ll reserve judgement on something until I’ve actually seen it.

Mostly though, the couple that I have seen I would not call documentaries. I call them agendamentaries. If for no other reason, a documentary should observe. The documentary maker should NEVER influence the direction of the actions he’s trying to film.

For example, the whole Columbine get a gun for openning an account thing. Who cares? Were there no other prizes to choose from, was there not another bank in town giving away something else?

Just like Rush, Moore preaches to those who already believe. By definition, they’re not enlightening anyone.

If I see this movie, I’ll pay for a ticket for one movie and sneak in after that.

I might be the only one here who’s seen Sicko, but interestingly enough, D—, in it Michael Moore takes a trio of uninsured 9/11 volunteers to Cuba to obtain health care for the conditions they acquired at Ground Zero. (They receive it in a fairly nice-looking hospital.) I had a lot of issues with the film — how health care in other countries is routinely called “free,” for example — but a big one is your point. Michael Moore could easily afford to emigrate, but he doesn’t. Why not?

They just hate the fact that someone else is number 1 over them.

  52. 52 Pastafarian Sep 18th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

Isn’t Michael Moore an American citizen? How about those 9/11ers? Isn’t it illegal for American citizens to travel to Cuba?

  53. 53 Reaver Sep 18th, 2009 at 8:15 pm

Pastafarian, I remember this. Moore applied to the state dept for an exemption to travel to cuba for the movie. But he decided the state dept was taking too long and traveled to cuba without it. When he came back state threatened to charge him with violating the law but Moore yelled political repression and they backed off.

  54. 54 Pastafarian Sep 18th, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Cool. I don’t know where I got the idea that he was from Canada. Maybe because he’s shaped like an igloo? That’s what Canadians live in right?

    Take that Quebec!

  55. 55 AllyKat Sep 18th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

There are ways to get around the travel ban, and it isn’t as airtight as people think. Rosa, you make a good point about how we shouldn’t trash people just because they are fat. Time to dial back that part of the rhetoric, everybody. On the other hand, I do think that it is a fair point that he is so critical of our health system and how it “doesn’t work” but actually has a condition (obesity) that creates a strain on that system. One of the biggest growing costs of health care is obesity related conditions, so if Moore is really so concerned that health care be available to all, he should be making a huge effort to cut his weight so he won’t create more of a drain on resources. I don’t want to trash heavy people in general, but obesity related conditions do require a lot of treatment, and money spent on said treatments is no longer available to be spent on other health care needs. Obesity is somewhat avoidable (genetics certainly play a role, but behavior does too), so one could make an argument that by being obese and not making an effort to change that (and to be fair, maybe he is), an obese person is “taking” resources/money that could be used to treat diseases/conditions that have no real behavioral cause, like children’s cancers, birth defects (though sometimes the parents’ behavior can be a cause), MS or cerebral palsy.

Someone is going to cream me for this argument. FULLL DISCLOSURE: I could lose a few pounds, and some of my relatives are pretty heavy. I don’t hate heavy people! And I don’t actually think that obese people are cheating people out of health care. I do think that health care is much more complex than a lot of people realize, and that decisions ripple through more than most of us want to admit. Finite resources, infinite wants and needs.

Moore needs to realize that unless he is living perfectly, or at least making an effort to live according to his “principles”, he shouldn’t throw stones. We have Scott F. He knows where to get grenades. :D

  56. 56 Rocko Sep 18th, 2009 at 9:51 pm

Wait, wait, why in the hell are we having a healthcare debate for? If you’re sick and can’t afford insurance, the gov’t will get you a round trip ticket to Cuba. Healthcare problem solved. You’re welcome America.

calling Moore a marxist is like saying Obama’s white. If Moore calls himself a marxist, he’s even more of a hypocrite then anyone could expect. If the people on Deceiver call him that, I will spend the next year or so being absolutely stunned by so much ignorance. Key words to finding marxists: socialism instead of capitalism, class analysis, democracy, no simplistic views, no populism. In Moore’s films: no socialism, no class analysis, simplistic vieuws, populism. And (almost) everybody claims democracy, so that one doesn’t count :-p .Stated that way, you could even see Moore as a marxist’s antithesis!

Michael Moore is an American Hero. Does he make money doing his job? Of course he does. Are you capitalism loving folks actually suggesting that anyone who gets paid for their work is not legitimate or to be trusted?
If you’d watch the movie you might learn that no one is suggesting that we abolish money and go back to the barter system. The difference between Michael Moore and the people he exposes in his latest attempt to “WAKE UP AMERICA” is that his money is not made off of the blood, sweat and tears of OTHERS. There is a bit of a difference between people who make an honest living and corporate piranhas that make their money at the expense of others.
I will never understand people that oppose fairness or worse oppose something or someone they don’t know a thing about. If you want to have your own opinion about him and his motives, learn a little something about his history, the way he runs his business, how he spends his money and how he lives now that he is in the top 1%. If you want to have your own opinion about the state of capitalism as he sees it, see the movie and then form one.

No, he’s the one suggesting it. Except when it comes to himself.

There is a bit of a difference between people who make an honest living and corporate piranhas that make their money at the expense of others.

There is no bigger corporate piranha than Michael Moore.

Michael Moore is an American Hero.

I was going to say “No, but he’s eaten several, apparently”. But then I remembered we’ve agreed to step off the Pizza the Hutt references. Too bad, that.

Moore is an American Hero? More like the American Zero. And he does make his money off of the blood, sweat and tears of others. Who do you think he hires to work on his films? And who pays to see those films – other Americans. Not me though. I have no problem supporting the poor, I just prefer to do it when I want and not be told to do it. I worked hard to where I am right now, why take that away from me?
