The New York Times Is Rielle Late

Within a mere 14 months, the New York Times has gone from actively suppressing the Rielle Hunter story to ripping off the work of humble, hard-working bloggers to breaking news that everybody knows already:

The story of the spectacular rise and fall of John Edwards, with its sordid can’t-look-away dimensions, is moving slowly but deliberately to its conclusion here in North Carolina.

Mr. Edwards, the one-term senator who came close to being elected vice president in 2004 and ran a credible campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, remains largely secluded at his 100-acre estate here.

But a federal grand jury in nearby Raleigh is investigating whether any crimes were committed in connection with campaign laws in an effort to conceal his extramarital affair with a woman named Rielle Hunter. At the same time, Mr. Edwards is moving toward an abrupt reversal in his public posture; associates said in interviews that he is considering declaring that he is the father of Ms. Hunter’s 19-month-old daughter, something that he once flatly asserted in a television interview was not possible.

That’s quite a scoop, NYT! There might be a tribe in Papua New Guinea who still didn’t know Edwards is the daddy.

There are all kinds of problems with the NYT’s story, mainly its revisionist history of how the story broke and how long it took them to catch up to the National Enquirer and blogs like us. Not to mention passages like this:

When Mr. Edwards was running for president, and later when he still held out hope of a cabinet position in the Obama administration, two of his wealthy patrons, through a once-trusted Edwards aide, quietly provided Ms. Hunter with large financial benefits, including a new BMW and lodging, that were used to keep her out of public view.

Gee, how were they able to do that so quietly? You’d think the media turned a blind eye or something. Weird!

But it’s Sunday and I don’t feel like getting into it. Just read their stupid story yourself and laugh along at their attempts to salvage their reputation.

Update: Okay, one other tidbit. From former Edwards lackey Andrew Young’s book proposal:

In the proposal, which The New York Times examined, Mr. Young says that he assisted the affair by setting up private meetings between Mr. Edwards and Ms. Hunter. He wrote that Mr. Edwards once calmed an anxious Ms. Hunter by promising her that after his wife died, he would marry her in a rooftop ceremony in New York with an appearance by the Dave Matthews Band.

But only because at that point, Phish hadn’t gotten back together yet.

The face of the Democratic Party.

  2. 2 GT Sep 20th, 2009 at 4:38 pm

From the (2008) Edwards For President website: “I began my presidential campaign here to remind the country that we, as citizens and as a government, have a moral responsibility to each other, and what we do together matters.”

If ever there were a poster child for wealth without morals and power without ethics it is John Edwards. The most troubling aspect to this entire story? It isn’t that he callously used his dying wife in furtherance of his political aspirations. It isn’t that he cheated on his wife and betrayed his family. It isn’t that he practiced the old maxim “lie and deny till you die”. It was that he is arrogant enough to think that he would get away with it, that the rules of life somehow didn’t apply to him. And aside from his family, what about those millions of downtrodden, salt of the earth, mill working, lunch pail, blue collar men and women Edwards promised to fight for? They weren’t worth more to him than a piece of ass.

…[A]nd what we do together matters.”

Yeah, because it can end up needing diapers and formula.

He would’ve been right, if not for the National Enquirer.

maybe this will bring closure to this story? Because I am really getting tired of the lies. He had a moral obligation? Morals is a word that the Democrats have no clue what it means.

What every girl dreams of…..a rooftop ceremony in New York with an appearance by the Dave Matthews Band, but only after the starter wife is planted, of course.

  7. 7 Beige Sep 20th, 2009 at 5:49 pm

Hmm. The DMB is probably a lot cheaper to pick up these days than the Arctic Monkeys. Only slightly more pricey than Hootie and the Blowfish, I’d say. Of course, Rielle is herself the Big Lots version of a wife, so there you go.

You’ve got to love the NYT and other MSM outlets when they essentially assert that nothing is real until they say it is.

  8. 8 Hurricane Sep 20th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

DMB remains one of the highest grossing tours every year.

Also, don’t forget that his dying wife was a prominant and willing actor in his web of deceit as long as the goal was to get to the White House.

What a dork. Ah to be 17 again. “C’mon baby I’ll get Dave Matthews to play at our wedding. It’ll be totally cool! We’ll all wear tuxedos and gym shoes!”

After that he takes a hit off his bong and makes her swear they’ll play “Stairway to Heaven” at his wake.

  11. 11 GT Sep 20th, 2009 at 8:01 pm

    I’m not so sure, Simon.

As this site has taught us, whores go to the highest bidder. (Or whomever has the most coke.) With Fred Baron having made a trip to the other side of the lawn the gravy train with biscuit wheels is no longer rolling. Little Andy Young realized that the only way to squeeze more money out of this was to go public… and that is exactly what he has done. Of course the MSM is duplicitous in not covering the story, that is a given and a hypocrisy old enough to be carbon-14 dated. But having worked in Washington I know the cliche is true: Want a friend? Get a dog. Had Edwards not had the financial ability to provide for Rielle and Hunter (as well as the Steve McNairian “We’ll be together soon babe, I promise! line down pat) Rielle would have forced this to have been covered a long time ago. Oprah, The View, Larry King, Extra! … you know, the hard news outlets. Now it is up to the grand jury and the FEC and I am not holding my breath.

Great story… I always thought Edwards looked like he was hiding something. And you are right, NYT is too late on this so-called “scoop.” I guess they finally are stooping to the level of ‘tabloid journalism’ since it pays the bills (lol).

  16. 16 jenn Sep 21st, 2009 at 7:26 am

I think GT’s post got this all right. The gravy train has come off the rails for those involved. Seems none of them know how to make a decent honest living so they are scrambling for cash by exposing each other. As for the media. They look foolish and they know it. First Edwards and now ACORN.

  17. 17 Angry Army Wife Sep 21st, 2009 at 8:39 am

If it was Republican, they would have been the first to report it. They just now decide to report on it? Where were they a year ago? Oh yeah, working on getting Obama elected.

And it is good to know that Octomom is slim now. CAuse that is more important than taking care of her kids. Glad to see where her priorities are at. Working out in front of a camera or feeding and taking care of her kids.

  18. 18 Beige Sep 21st, 2009 at 11:23 am

AAW, it was ALWAYS about her; the kids are obviously, clearly, blatantly, callously being used as accessories and conversation pieces. And if CPS wouldn’t take Michael Jackson’s veil-wearing, dangled-over-the-balcony kids away, they’re not gonna take Octomom’s either.

  19. 19 Happer Camper Sep 21st, 2009 at 11:23 am

Huricane, if JE is the face of the Dems. That makes, Vitter, Ensign, Sanford, and the toe tapper, what ever his name is, the face of the Repubs. These men are still in office. That’s the C street family values showing.

The problem is this is a man problem not a political problem. Yes, women do it too, but we do it for love God help us.

  20. 20 Hurricane Sep 21st, 2009 at 11:52 am

Happer Camper- nice that you can name a few Repub names and even toss in one you can’t remember. Really backs up your point. We can play that game all day. Murtha, Jefferson, Rangel, Dodd and on and on…Seems the common threads here are sexual hypocrisy for the Repub’s and criminal malfeasance by the Dem’s. According to the Dem logic of the 90’s sexual lies and hypocrisy don’t mean a thing (It was only a blowjob, right? Committing perjury didn’t seem to enter into the liberal equation back then) so your argument is weakened further.

Edwards was on the presidential ticket and was a stones throw and few Ohio votes shy of being the VPOTUS. That kicks it up a notch and elevates him out of the Senate.

As for it being some sort of “man problem” and not political? Johnny boy AND his wife participated in a daily fraud to the country even when the truth was out for the sole purpose of obtaining political power. At that point the sex aspect of the story is secondary. His blatant disregard for the turth, willingness to lie to any and all with the help of the MSN, potential criminal wrongdoing in payoffs (still tbd as uinvestigations are ongoing)and overall douchebaggery of the man makes him, in my mind, the poster boy for what the Dem party is.

That is until Obama got elected. Now Obama is the face of the party due to his position and it ain’t pretty either my friend.

  21. 21 Hurricane Sep 21st, 2009 at 11:53 am

Beige, sorry I was being sarcastic. I do not think she ever had anyone’s best interest at heart except for her own.

Hurricane, you are right on! While Republicans have a problem keeping it in their pants, the Dems have a problem with authority, period. Well, the recent ones at least. Let’s not forget J. Kennedy, T. Kennedy, Dodd, Clinton to name a few that could not keep it in their pants. If a Dem committed adultry, then all was well. If a Republican does, then off with their heads. In my eyes, it does not matter who cheated, they should all step down. But since morals and values are only for the repulicans and not the democrats, then all is well.

  24. 24 jenn Sep 21st, 2009 at 12:35 pm

I think Barney Frank is probably the best example of Dems getting a pass. The man used a prostitute – that alone would have been the end of a Repubs career – he then had the prostitute live with him. But wait there is more…. He hired that prostitute as a congressional aide even writing letters on behalf of this person on congressional letterhead. Then it is discovered a whorehouse is being run out of Frank’s capitol hill home. This should have ended a political career but no, Frank wins re-election and is now chairman of the HFSC. Huh?!

  25. 25 TheIrish Sep 21st, 2009 at 12:47 pm

Damn, I was totally going to get prostitutes to help run my upcoming run for State Representative, but once again a Democrat has already stolen my morally ambiguous idea!

  26. 26 Angry Army Wife Sep 21st, 2009 at 1:19 pm

jenn, I was going to mention the biggest douche of all, but forgot. Didn’t his boyfriend also work for Freddie Mac? Inside information is a big no-no too, but oh well.

And the “toe tapper” did not have sex with an intern in the oval office or get some chick pregnant while his wife was undergoing treatment for Cancer.

  27. 27 Pastafarian Sep 21st, 2009 at 1:28 pm

Damn I gotta get myself elected to congress or the senate or somethin’. Drugs, hookers, guns, midget wrestling matches (probably), work like 7 months a year… what a life.

  28. 28 Happer Camper Sep 21st, 2009 at 2:29 pm

My point was that when you use global statements everyone gets a little mudd slung on them. Yes, through history there have probably been multiple pregnancies by mistresses from prominent men. JE didn’t invent that wheel.

Keep in mind, I still think he’s a whore chasing hillbilly and she’s his whore. Scum, douchebag whatever you want to call him, I’m with you.

Now let’s all sign a petition to get all the whore chasing men and women out of the congress D or R.

And somehow that makes it not newsworthy?

  30. 30 Hurricane Sep 21st, 2009 at 2:59 pm

I’ll settle for getting the criminals out of Congress first.

  31. 31 Angry Army Wife Sep 21st, 2009 at 3:16 pm

criminals like the ones who tend to forget to pay their taxes. If it were me, I would have a lien thrown on me quicker than you can say lien. Somehow with them, it is just an honest mistake. “oops, I slipped and somehow got her pregnant”

  34. 34 Happer Camper Sep 21st, 2009 at 5:26 pm

I don’t remember their names. There were multiple kings that had bastard children, their term not mine. Lots of politicians. Most of Americas’ elite are included in this catagory. Not all but a lot of them. I used to read a lot of biographies. I don’t anymore. Research it. Before 24 hour news no one knew about them. Newsworthy? It wasn’t always. Even my hillbilly grandfather apparently had kids up and down the hollar. I just found out about about 18 mos. ago. We all laughed but it still hurts my mother. She laughed but her eyes were sad. No one wrote it up in the town paper.

When I was growing up Elizabeth Tayor was the worst woman in the world. Married 5-6 times. That was my scandal when I was younger. Then the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s came along and everybody seemed to do everybody. I’m not much interested in other people’s sex lives. I am interested in where my money goes when I give to a campaign. And if it went to JE’s slut for “furniture” I hope he does jail time.

Now you can only catch who you are able to catch and with a good lawyer they can do limited pentence but that’s the American Justice system and with all it’s flaws it’s still the best.

I read on the internet that the city of Philidelphia is closing it’s public libraries. That’s a newsworthy story. Why not research it? America’s end times will come when her people are too illiterate to sustain it’s society.

  35. 35 Simon Scowl Sep 21st, 2009 at 6:01 pm

  37. 37 AllyKat Sep 22nd, 2009 at 2:35 am

Well, there’s Grover Cleveland: Ma, ma, where’s my pa? In the White House, hahaha! Most European kings had mistresses (half the castles in Europe were built for the women on the side), several of whom had children (ex. Henry VIII and Anne Boylyn’s sister had a child together out of wedlock). Plenty of Near Eastern and Far Eastern rulers had multiple wives, concubines and who knows what else. Read the Iliad, everyone is sleeping around. You’d think by now, SOMEONE would have figured out how to keep it quiet. Or perhaps they have, and that’s why we don’t know about it. Whoa.

It seems like papers used to try to print different stories so you would want to buy THEIR paper, because you could only get the story there. Now, it seems to be the same, just with different layouts and fonts. I can tell you right now, if the Washington Post gets any more casual with their articles’ tone I may just give in and go to the Washington Times, even if that crazy Rev. Moon does own it. Firing most of the copy editors and getting rid of all the older reporters who could actually write was a big mistake. Almost as big as acting like Bob Woodward has written anything important since Watergate.

Yet the Washington Post is still better than the New York Times.

  38. 38 Angry Army Wife Sep 22nd, 2009 at 8:44 am

Ohio will be closing their public libraries as well. Why? cAuse our Democratic Governor wants to cut costs, but instead of cutting staff, he would rather take away social programs and funding for education. So much for the Democrats being for the people. He also cut funding for Mental Health services.

Not sure why you want deceiver to research it as it is not hypocrytical. After all, that is what this site is about. Hypocrytes like our dear messiah and his administration.

  39. 39 Happer Camper Sep 22nd, 2009 at 8:52 am

Get a group of people together and fight for your libraries instead of blaming everyone and their uncle. Pols listen to large groups of people.

Yeah, right after they brand them mobs and Nazis and Astroturf agitators.

  41. 41 Angry Army Wife Sep 22nd, 2009 at 10:56 am

exactly Beige. Which is what we were called (including lots of Democrats) for opposing the idea of shutting down or limiting the hours of operations at the libraries. And I am not blaming everyone and my uncle. I am blaming our Governor. After all, he has no problem blaming everyone else but himself, as the Dems seem to do time and time again. “I inherited this” is crap.

Simon, it was only a suggestion. I thought you were interested. For crying out loud lower your blood presure. This isn’t a fight.

I see for the rest of you fixing your library system isn’t your beef. FYI, I grew up on Walter Cronkits 20th century. Fact is Nazi’s were a facist, conservative group who conspired with the Catholic church to take over Germany. Most Germans didn’t know about the “camps” and were horrified when they found out. Of course when you are able to rewrite history to your liking this information may have disappeared. That’s why you need public libraries.

  44. 44 Simon Scowl Sep 22nd, 2009 at 11:49 am

Simon, it was only a suggestion. I thought you were interested. For crying out loud lower your blood presure. This isn’t a fight.

The important thing is that you’re the calm one.

  45. 45 Pastafarian Sep 22nd, 2009 at 1:12 pm

Fascist conservative group? The Catholic Church? I need to know where the Bilderbergs, the Freemasons, and the Jews fall into that plan.

Better yet where’s Scott F when you really need him.

  46. 46 Beige Sep 22nd, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Um…the Nazis were many things, but “conservative” was not one of them. Not in the sense of preserving the status quo, and not in the sense of preserving traditional values. They were definitely nationalist, but they were radicals and changed a great deal about their country, and not for the better. Hitler was homophobic and racist, but as we’ve seen, those characteristics don’t confine themselves to “conservatives” any more than red hair does.

One definition of “fascism” is the focusing of a group’s grievances against a specific group of outsiders, who are then demonized and used to mobilize the population in support of the fascist’s goals. It’s not necessarily a right-wing thing; that definition applies handily to Mao’s campaign against “capitalist roaders” during the Cultural Revolution. Mao isn’t generally associated with fascism per se, but if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, roast it and slap it on some of those yummy little pancakes, I always say.

And who said we’re not concerned about our public libraries? AAW’s point was the exact opposite, in fact.

  47. 47 D--- Sep 22nd, 2009 at 1:15 pm

The public library is one of those things that drives me nuts. We can’t afford to keep libraries open but we can afford to give subsidies to the “poor” for health insurance.

I put the poor in quotes because in the US we have no poor; we have people who are broke but poor? You want to see poor? Cruise down to Tijuana and check out the hillsides, the “poor” in the US are freakin’ rich in comparison.

  48. 48 Angry Army Wife Sep 22nd, 2009 at 2:17 pm

We have been protesting shutting down the libraries because that is the last great place someone can go to educate themselves and search the internet for free. The kids these days are not getting the right kind of education and I for one would rather see them open a book at the library then hang out at the mall. We are raising money to help this battle, but why should we? Why do we even have to think about raising money to keep them open? Why are we giving more money in foodstamps and unemployment when we could use that money to help out the social services?

  49. 49 Hmmm... Sep 22nd, 2009 at 7:42 pm

    Happy Camper,

The closest that the Nazi party and Catholics came to “conspiring” together is with the Reichskonkordat. Indeed, how great a conspiracy this was. Granting the great privilege of being able to continue existing as a legitimate religion in Germany in exchange for the measly gift of dismissing all semblance of political power which would have been taken anyway even without the boon of existence being granted. I can certainly see how this alone would constitute a conspiracy, but wait! It gets even more insidious: a number of Catholic signers of the Reichskonkordat were forced to sign at gunpoint and several of the terms were broken by the Germans afterward anyway. It’s sort of like how the victim of extortion is actually an accessory to the crime of extortion for technically having an arrangement, even if forced and to their own disenfranchisement, with the dominant party.
