Gisele Bundchen Heats Up the United Nations (And the Planet!)

Gisele_BLet’s hear it for Gisele! Not only is she gorgeous, but she’s also really smart. So smart, in fact, that the United Nations has just given her the awesome responsibility of Goodwill Ambassador to the Environment:

“I’m really honored to have received a call from the UN to spread the message about climate change in the world,” the supermodel, 29, told reporters during an appearance in Manhattan’s Washington Square, where her new position was announced Sunday.

Congrats, Gizzy! Do you mind if we call you Gizzy? You do? Okay, Gizzy.

So, how did Gizzy celebrate her new phony and made-up job, which she’ll somehow have to juggle with her current phony and made-up job? I’ll bet you think she went somewhere in a private jet. Well, you’d be wrong!

One day after she was named the United Nations advocate for environmental awareness, Gisele Bundchen was snapped down in Marshfield taking flying lessons in a fuel-guzzling helicopter. Way to lower that carbon footprint, Mrs. Brady!

Tom Brady’s bride, who has campaigned against Amazon deforestation and for sustainable development and even launched an environmentally friendly line of sandals, was spotted flying off in a gas-sucking Robinson R-44 chopper yesterday morning.

Shoreline Aviation prez Keith Douglass confirmed that Bundchen has been talking helicopter-flying lessons for about a month at Marshfield Airport. Apparently, Mrs. 12 wants to shorten her commute between Massachusetts – where she and Tom have set up housekeeping for football season – and NYC, where Gisele has most of her modeling assignments.

“She’s doing it for lots of reasons,” Douglass told the Track . “But mainly because of where she lives, she needs a helicopter…”

In case you’re keeping track, according to infinitehealthresources.com, a one-hour helicopter ride emits a whopping 466 pounds of CO2 per passenger.

Sounds like ol’ Gizzy has diplomatic immunity with Mother Earth!

What better way to spread the message of climate change than to hasten it with her own irresponsibility? See, she can’t do her “real” job in Boston because they don’t have cameras or lack of clothing there. But increasing her already massive carbon footprint is a small price to pay for raising awareness. Is your awareness raised? Admit it, your awareness is totally raised.

In other unbelievable-ecocrite news: Prince Charles wants you to take the bus.

And, switching over to economicrites: “Everyone I talked to was like, ‘I bet Michael Moore would freak out if he saw that this was happening.’ And then he showed up. And was eating it up.”

Wow, if she gets any smarter and more earth-saving aware, Al “We’re all going to die” Gore will be out of a job.

  2. 2 Pastafarian Sep 22nd, 2009 at 11:42 am

Being aware of the environment is a good thing. Especially if you’re out late because I always think people that look different want to rob me.

  3. 3 Mermaid Sep 22nd, 2009 at 11:51 am

for ever and ever, for every thing, I only have to say 4 applicable words: “Ayn Rand was right”

  4. 4 Angry Army Wife Sep 22nd, 2009 at 11:54 am

I saw where she is taking helicopter lessons, but not about her being the new Ambassador. I love Tom Brady, but his wife needs a lesson on what not to do. Maybe she should fly commerical?

Here’s a couple of pictures of Prince Charles’s pads. Bet these babys are energy efficient.

Ms. B is right that she can’t do any modeling up here, because the Brahmins frown on lingerie and cameras were banned 5 years ago. And heaven forbid she should take Acela or the Delta Shuttle, because they only run 20 or 30 trips a day between NYC and Boston.

As a Boston resident I’m contractually obligated to think the sun shines out of Brady’s butt, but wish he hadn’t married this piece of work.

  7. 7 Beige Sep 22nd, 2009 at 1:19 pm

@MC Mom: That almost made me barf with laughter. Hee. As an overly literal-minded person, I’ve got mental pictures you just don’t wanna discuss right now.

“AIIIIGGGHHH! WHERE THE #@@#$^ are my Foster Grants!?”

    I’d hit it!

  9. 9 Rocko Sep 22nd, 2009 at 1:33 pm

With a name like Gizzy you probably already did Jrod

  10. 10 D--- Sep 22nd, 2009 at 1:33 pm

Pasta – I think you are overlooking the 30 solar panels that are on the roof (at least I think they are solar panels). Those panels probably supply 0.00005% of the energy that his quaint abode uses. So he is totally walking the walk

  11. 11 Rocko Sep 22nd, 2009 at 1:36 pm

And please it’s not Mrs. Tom Brady, it’s Mr. and Mrs. Gisele Bundchen

  12. 12 Pastafarian Sep 22nd, 2009 at 1:39 pm

I didn’t see the panels. But I admit they’re pretty cool right? If I were his ancestors I’da chopped off a bunch of heads to keep those places too. Hell I’d do it today.

Call me if you need me Charley!

Taking the train isn’t an option? How about helicopter-pooling with the CEOs down the block? And why doesn’t she just hire someone to take her? They already took the lessons, so less emissions.

Excuse me while I don’t feel bad about driving to my college campus that cannot be accessed via public transportation from my county.

  15. 15 anagram Sep 22nd, 2009 at 2:39 pm

she should take the creepy fung wah buses from boston to NYC (that tend to blow up on occasion and most likely fuel some underground illegal businesses) like the rest of us. don’t they say carpooling cuts down on the effect we have on the environment? there’s also the amtrak option, or even better, the acela’s electric!

just trying to be helpful giesle!

  16. 16 JollyGreenMidget Sep 22nd, 2009 at 3:09 pm

Ambassador. With an A. Please to fix, Sir Scowl.

  17. 17 Pastafarian Sep 22nd, 2009 at 5:08 pm

Nice way to spell Charlie. I was thinking of my ex-girlfriend Charley I guess. But he’s better looking than her, and probably drinks less at that bar next to the bowling alley.

  18. 18 MC Mom Sep 22nd, 2009 at 5:23 pm

Beige, Brady is hot enough that he’d probably look pretty good with a really blindingly bright butt. ;-)

However, his performance in last Sunday’s game against the Jets has taken some of the luster off that very nice rear end. The fans will only love you as long as you keep winning, Tom, so step it up.

Anagram, I wouldn’t ask even Gisele to take the freakin’ Fung Wah bus. There’s being practical and saving money, and then there’s having a death wish.

  19. 19 Minnow Sep 22nd, 2009 at 6:06 pm

The fans will only love you as long as you keep winning, Tom, so step it up.

Don’t worry, Tom. We’ll always have Ann Arbor.

  20. 20 fallingstar Sep 22nd, 2009 at 6:15 pm

AllyKat- But didn’t you read? “Because of where she lives, she NEEDS a helicopter”. Who are we to question that? The poor thing can’t drive a car or take a train (or yes, God forbid, carpool) like the rest of us peons. See, we’re not pretty and smart like her.

  21. 21 Witkin Sep 22nd, 2009 at 6:35 pm

This from People magazine is the best:

Bündchen’s main motivation in learning to fly? Learning the nuts and bolts of aviation so she can work, as a new goodwill ambassador for the UN’s Environmental Programme, on finding an alternative source of jet fuel. “She is trying to promote alternative fuel, and she’s going to be very active doing that,” says Douglass.

  22. 22 GuyIncognito Sep 22nd, 2009 at 7:52 pm

Hot & stupid – just the way I like ‘em!

  23. 23 Pastafarian Sep 22nd, 2009 at 8:41 pm

Yeah sure I can see her working on the new jet fuel now. Just a lab coat, those little glasses. Stilet- Yeah okay that’s cool.

  24. 24 Don Sep 22nd, 2009 at 9:22 pm

Last week in Australia we had Miss Environment contest. They tour around in a stretch Hummer. Really, models and the environment dont mix!

  25. 25 Fortunate_Son Sep 23rd, 2009 at 12:53 am

    As usual, environmentalists math fails.

A Robinson R44 with 300 payload (pilot and gear) burns 14 gph (gallons per hour). A pound of fuel burned creates three pounds of CO2, so if the R44 carries only the pilot, it creates 42 lbs of C02/Hour.

If the same R44 carries four passengers, it would probably burn 16gph, creating 48 lbs of C02/hr, or 12 lbs per passenger/hour.

In case you’re keeping track, according to infinitehealthresources.com, a one-hour helicopter ride emits a whopping 466 pounds of CO2 per passenger.

  26. 26 AllyKat Sep 23rd, 2009 at 2:29 am

Is a helicopter really that fuel efficient? That’s better than a Hummer H-1. Regardless, fallingstar is right. I totally missed the “NEEDS” part. Just not pretty enough to understand.

The idea of Gisele Bundchen (or any celebrity, really) spending time finding alternative fuels is either ludicrous or incomprehensible. I’m still trying to decide. Or do they mean she’s going to look for it on Rodeo Drive?

  27. 27 Swede0319 Sep 23rd, 2009 at 3:34 pm

MC Mom, Sorry about this but:

    J E T S! Jets! Jets! Jets!

**even though my Jags are 0-2**

  28. 28 anonymous Sep 23rd, 2009 at 4:39 pm

Actually, it was widely reported that she is taking these lessons to become more familiar with aerodynamics, etc. so that she can help the UN in finding alternate sources of fuel. This was also one of the topics she discussed in her press conference on Sunday.
So please get your facts staight before you start calling someone a hypocrite.

  29. 29 Simon Scowl Sep 23rd, 2009 at 4:46 pm

Funny how people use “actually” right before they say something that isn’t actual.

  30. 30 MC Mom Sep 23rd, 2009 at 5:07 pm

No need to apologize, Swede – my husband the Jets fan doesn’t. ;-)

  31. 31 Ian Sep 23rd, 2009 at 6:14 pm

I’m sorry but are you trying to tell us that a model is helping the UN find alternate sources of fuel? If that’s the case we’re SCREWED! Is the UN turning into backward world? Next I suppose I’ll be asking Al Gore for advice on climate chan……oh no

  32. 32 Elle Sep 23rd, 2009 at 7:11 pm

“Actually, it was widely reported that she is taking these lessons to become more familiar with aerodynamics, etc.” – Anonymous

Yeah, I learned about aerodynamics in a *textbook*

  33. 33 Beige Sep 23rd, 2009 at 9:19 pm

I’m sure that Math-Is-Hard Barbie is getting RIGHT ON that aerodynamics thing for the UN, because it’s not as though anyone else, say at NASA or ANYWHERE, has ever explored the field before.

    Jem–She’s truly truly truly outrageous!

  34. 34 AllyKat Sep 24th, 2009 at 12:50 am

When did Victoria’s Secret start handing out chemistry, physics, and engineering degrees? I’m probably more qualified to research alternative fuels than Gisele, and I have barely started general college chemistry.

If she needs to learn about aerodynamics “first hand”, there are simulators that probably use a lot less energy than a helicopter.

She was given this “post” for the same reason all celebrities are brought on board for causes. No one is paying attention, so the PR people find someone who people pay attention to, and try to convince them to talk about cause X. Cause X gets publicity, the celebrity can show off their charitable, caring side. Everyone wins. Except the general public, who has to listen to the (usually) underinformed spokesmodel.

  35. 35 Scott F. Sep 24th, 2009 at 1:09 am

I’m actually quite excited about this development! We can just decide we want to work on something, totally regardless of our credentials in that area, and *poof* we’re in the door? SWEET! This is almost as cool as that Obama unicorn I’m sill waiting for.

I’ve always loved watching Star Trek, I’ll drop NASA a line in the morning to find out when I can start.

  36. 36 Crow Jane Sep 24th, 2009 at 1:22 am

Yes anonymous, we’re all going to die unless this clothes hanger with flesh steps in and does something. I mean, I’m sure that someone with her brain cells wastes far less energy then someone who actually thinks for a living.

  37. 37 AllyKat Sep 24th, 2009 at 1:41 am

Well, Scott, it worked for Obama. :P

Good luck with your new business, Beige. I’m off to Mass General to demand that they give me a highly paid job as a neurosurgeon.

  41. 41 Sad vs. True Sep 24th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

How sad would some of you be/feel if she were truly doing her job and contacting companies that are working very hard at the specific goal she was charged with? She has already contacted companies like XXXXXXX. Their fuel has already been tested by the FAA. It exceeds the BTU of petroleum fuels by 13%. It has a lower freeze point and a higher lubricity than petroleum. I wonder if she did that because she is a model or because the fuel will drop CO2 levels in the world by 13%, Sulfur by 13%, NOX by 8%. Ya I’m sure she just got the fake job to sit around doing nothing but ripping on people she’s never met. Because that is very, very pro active thing to do with ones time.

  42. 42 Minnow Sep 25th, 2009 at 12:41 pm

    Yes it is sad, Sad.

Last I checked, companies just don’t go around manufacturing a product (much less a small market specialty item) unless there actually is a commercial market for it. Except of course, when a government subsidizes it, which is a whole’nother ball of hippo scat. Assuming this Fuel of Lucifer isn’t subsidized, it’s safe to say that while you do not approve of a high caloric aviation fuel, there is a group of purchasers who support it’s production.

Much like pictures of skinny, big nosed, daddy-stealin’ brazilians… somewhere out there, there’s a market. I may not care for them but that’s no reason to ban them.

And please, check your sciency sounding facts:

Current volume of the earth’s atmosphere: 5,000,000,000,000,000 metric tons (5 quadrillion)
Current average volume of the earth’s atmospheric CO2: 3,000,000,000,000 metric tons
Average volume after supposed 13% atmospheric CO2 reduction: 2,610,000,000,000 metric tons

I’d calculate the volume of change in the earth’s overall atmosphere, but I think I lost you and Gizzy on the last gigaton x 10 to the ninth…

But gee, that there’s a whole lotta volume reduction from just a single fuel changeover. Even more amazing when you consider the small percentage of world population that ever uses such a specialty fuel. Wow, imagine the kind of change we could stimulate if you and I got together to hold hands and sang about it?

But wait, is that evil-fuel from reduction or complete non-usage? Over just one year? One decade? One millenium?

    Shoot, details do matter.

And where does the reduction cover? Just the US? The world? The universe? Which countries have signed on to the ban? As Gisele must have noted after the Brady baby incident, politics is a bitch.

Oh, by the by, is there a suitable alternative for devil fuel? Is the replacement cheaper to produce, equally effective, less polar bear suffocating? Or are you now gonna tell me this proposed green hilocopter fuel movement is taxpayer subsidized too?

    Huh.

Darn. If Gisele hadn’t majored in grade school ball slapping, maybe I could get her to clarify all this for me…

  43. 43 Pearce Sep 27th, 2009 at 6:37 pm

I’m coming with you, Scott. I should be building warp drives and zooming around the universe by Friday. You build the transporters.

  44. 44 AllyKat Sep 27th, 2009 at 7:45 pm

I wasn’t aware that the mere fact that Gisele Bundchen contacted a company already working on alternative fuels constituted her working on alternative fuels. Just because I call Nabisco and tell them I want a lite version of Oreos and they then release low-fat Oreos doesn’t mean I created low-fat Oreaos or had a hand in their creation. She is in the position for publicity, anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves. If a celebrity at least has a background in studying or working on an issue, that is one thing. Gisele does not.
