Feminist Leader: Roman Polanski Has Been Through Enough

roman-polanskiPresented without comment:

Some of the [entertainment] industry’s most prominent women said they believe [Roman] Polanski, who faces a sentence as low as probation and as high as 16 months in prison for pleading guilty to having sex with a minor, should be freed. “My personal thoughts are let the guy go,” said Peg Yorkin, founder of the Feminist Majority Foundation. “It’s bad a person was raped. But that was so many years ago. The guy has been through so much in his life. It’s crazy to arrest him now. Let it go. The government could spend its money on other things.”

OK, I lied. I have a comment: This is disgusting. Yorkin is the founder of the Feminist Majority Foundation. Polanski has been living it up in France as a free man for decades. And she’s reminding us to consider how much a child rapist has been through in his life?

Why is this guy bringing out the crazy in so many people? Are we to believe he is such a brilliant director that his criminal transgressions are no big deal? Apologies to Jack Nicholson, but Chinatown was so not that good.

They liked Chinatown so much that they want to re-create the ending.

  2. 2 Beige Oct 5th, 2009 at 7:35 pm

Apparently nobody wanted to share, so Yorkin had to eat the whole truckload of Dumbass all by herself. Hope she’s got some Tums.

  3. 3 Scott F. Oct 5th, 2009 at 7:45 pm

I would love to act all smug and omniscient because of my comments the other day about the Polanski case as it pertains to the leaders of the modern feminist movement, but quite frankly even I couldn’t have seen THIS coming.

    Woman is nucking futs.

  4. 4 Beige Oct 5th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

See, you run across attitudes like this from prominent feminists, and then people wonder why feminism gets a bad reputation. It may just be because the women insisting on “equal treatment” actually espouse anything BUT equal treatment. Let Yorkin or her child get drugged and cornholed, by someone who’s not famous, and then let’s see how laissez-faire she is about the whole thing. Hey, it’s good enough for other people!

  5. 5 Pastafarian Oct 5th, 2009 at 8:06 pm

How many Polanskis does it take to screw in a light bulb?

None they just run to France.

    **ducks bottle**

I’ll just show my self out.

So many pedophiles claim to have had childhood “issues”. These childhood issue create “issues” and “problems” later in life. So what she is saying is that anyone who has “been through enough already” should not be punished for their crimes? Who is the one who will judge what is “enough already”? And once “enough” has been determined, what kind of crimes are excusable because of said suffering?

  7. 7 Richard Oct 5th, 2009 at 8:22 pm

I have decided that, should anyone ask me for money for a feminist issue, I will ask how they feel about Roman Polanski. If they say some of the crazy crap that I have heard, like the woman above, I will tell them to shove off.

  9. 9 Tal Oct 5th, 2009 at 8:47 pm

Polanski should have turned to a total life of crime while he had the chance. Rob some banks, hold some people hostage, shoot up a few churches…

    “How do you plead?”

“Not guilty by reason of family dying in the Holocaust and wife and unborn baby being murdered by the Manson Family, Your Honor.”

“Your Honor, he tortured my grandmother and set my pets on fire and sold my children into slavery and impregnated my cow!”

“Silence! Do you realize what this man has BEEN THROUGH in his life?”

“Do you realize what my COW has been through, Your Honor?”

It is a wonder my head hasn’t exploded from rage and disgust by now. Everytime I think that the line can’t be pushed further, some idiot proves me wrong. This is why more young women aren’t feminists. If this is what that group stands for, I don’t want to be part of it.

FYI, feminists: you’re supposed to protect and fight for the rights of WOMEN, not men who prey on women and girls.

ewwww. And as far as this “feminist” goes- holy . I am left speechless. He has been through a lot? What about the 13 year old he drugged and then had sex with even though she said no. Since when is he the victim?

  13. 13 Kevin Oct 5th, 2009 at 9:29 pm

I’m not surprised anymore. You see the myopeia when ideology trumps all else. It’s not like we haven’t seen this from the feminist leaders before (see Kennedy, Ted).

When the joke hews that close to fact, it’s not a joke, y’know? I guess the only question would be, whose 8-year-old? Because it can’t be the child of a rich or famous person.

  15. 15 AllyKat Oct 5th, 2009 at 10:12 pm

Just read the whole article, and noticed that the myth of the “reneged deal” is still circulating. A plea bargain is not final or binding unless/until a judge approves it. the judge is NOT required to sign off on it. If he really had a problem with the judge and lawyer, his overpriced lawyers could have done a million motions and appeals to get them off the case. The scumbag just didn’t want to pay for his crime, regardless of how light the sentence may have been. I hope they throw the book at him, and make him sit in an empty cell with nothing to do for 23 hours a day. Prison is too good for him.

  16. 16 Hmmm... Oct 5th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

    Pasta,

That joke was just awful in general and yet somehow it made me burst out laughing in general. I’m just odd, I guess.

Anyway, what bothers me most is her last comment “The government could spend its money on other things” or other people I’ve heard say that Californians could better spend its money looking for rapists now. I mean, do people really think that it’s more cost effective to investigate, arrest, and prosecute a rapist than it is to prosecute one who we already have in custody? Or how about this: even going back to before he was in custody by the Swiss, we still had the whole trial, investigation, and verdict already from 30 years ago. How can we really spend our money better, especially as far as crime enforcement goes, then going after a sure thing? Maybe it’s just me that thinks like that though

  17. 17 C. Oct 5th, 2009 at 10:54 pm

Just to clarify, other members of the Foundation have released a statement disavowing her words. I called the center today and got an apology from an intern, apparently they’re not sure what to do about this. Throw her out, I say. She’s no real feminist at all.

  18. 18 Les Paul Oct 5th, 2009 at 11:37 pm

If he had also murdered her, even “accidentally,” I wonder how many would side with him then ? Alas, still some probably would. There appears to be this “age” factor — somehow that seems to legitimize those who want to forgo his punishment, her justice. Let’s see more pictures of him from the year he raped her, and then it won’t be all “oh, poor Mr. old P”. But we’re “not” seeing them, are we? Funny how that works. Time might indeed heal wounds, as the true victim has said she’s forgiven him, which is her prerogative, but it doesn’t heal justice.

  19. 19 Koka Oct 5th, 2009 at 11:50 pm

“That was so many years ago.”

    Unbeleivable.

  20. 20 Nati Oct 6th, 2009 at 12:28 am

Not just Chinatown, most of his films are not good (IMHO). When people call him “one of the greatest filmmakers of all times” and rave about his movies and praise his “genius”, I honestly don’t understand what they are talking about. Out of all of his movies may be only “The Pianist” was good. Rosemary’s Baby – eh. The Ninth Gate – sucked, Bitter Moon – sucked, Death and the Maiden – sucked, Frantic – also sucked. (Again, IMHO). And even if he truly were the next Fellini/Pasolini/Godard, how would that be relevant anyway? His being a great director doesn’t change what he did.

And that pathetic excuse “He’s been through enough”…That doesn’t excuse what he did either. On the contrary, you’d think someone whose mother died in the Holocaust and whose wife and unborn child were also brutally murdered, would know what pain and suffering are and wouldn’t dream of intentionally inflicting pain and suffering on other people. If anything, he’s supposed to have more compassion for the others because of what he’s been through, not less. And after what he did to that girl, what has he been through? “He’s been punished enough”. Yeah. By living charmed life in Europe and receiving awards for his movies. What about his victim and what she’s been through? “It’s bad a person was raped. But that was so many years ago.” (I was livid when I read that). There’s no statute of limitation, so it doesn’t matter how long it has been. The fact that it’s been 32 years doesn’t change what he did either. And why don’t Polanski’s apologists ask his victim how the past 32 yrs have been? I bet it wasn’t an easy life. And I could have saved myself a lot of typing by simply saying that that Peg Yorkin woman is a pathetic excuse for a human being. And a sick bitch.

  21. 21 Mister Snitch Oct 6th, 2009 at 12:30 am

Bottom line is, they’re forgiving one of their own. To forgive is divine, long as it’s ‘them’ being forgiven. It’s the same logic that has Gore zipping around the world with a huge entourage in a private jet telling the plebes to conserve, or the late Paul Newman telling us to use less oil (when he wasn’t driving his fleet of race cars).

When it’s the Bonos or the Whoopis doing it, it ain’t rapey-rape, it ain’t tax evasion, and there’s no hypocrisy. They’re pure. The bad guys are those endlessly evil BushHitler types. Focus on them. Nothing to see here.

  22. 22 caroline Oct 6th, 2009 at 1:11 am

@ AllyKat: I wouldn’t judge all “feminists” by the misguided opinions of people like Peg Yorkin. Would you assume that all LGBT rights supporters have the same attitudes and opinions as Perez Hilton? I will grant you that alot of prominent and surprising people have come out in support of Polanski, but the Deceiver is right in that Polanski’s actions are not in keeping with (true) feminist values.

Point being: the feminist movement does not advocate rape or child molestation. I have no idea what is wrong with all these people who are suppoting him.

There are those who think Phil Spector is a genius, too…and they wanted HIM to go to jail.

Having heard the album Let It Be…Naked and compared it to the Spector-ized version, I think he should have gone to jail for messing with The Beatles’ music. Just sayin’.

  24. 24 Sharon Oct 6th, 2009 at 5:20 am

I am appalled at the sympathy for Roman Polanski, “let bygones be bygones” and “rape-rape” tripe. As a rape survivor, I can assure you that his victim(s) remember it all and cannot forget the episode no matter how many years pass. After 40 years I still cannot tolerate a hand or any other pressure on my throat, so I guess that makes “my” rape a “rape-rape”. However, I suffered NO physical injuries (other than losing my virginity) at “my” rape by an uncle at 11, so I guess that wasn’t a “rape-rape”. All these apologists, especially Whoopi Goldberg, make me want to vomit. Thank you so much for publishing the unvarnished TRUTH! Truly enjoy your site and thanks for letting me vent….Sharon

@caroline – if the groups that support and give these people a voice do not approve of what they are saying then the group/orginization needs to say so, very very loudly and then kick these people to the curb.

  27. 27 Aleric Oct 6th, 2009 at 9:48 am

Very true D, if the FOUNDER of the organization makes statements like that then what does it say about the rest of the group? If they keep her on it is condoning her statement and behavior.

It just goes to show that the motivation of some people isn’t really the cause they claim to hold, but being in the spotlight and associate with certain “socially elite crowds.”

And by “socially elite crowds” I of course mean “people who condone child rapists.”

I’m going to go throw up again.

What is it exactly that Peg Yorkin does for a living? That’s all the money she donated to political causes in 2008?!? Because I added it all up and it came to a Sh** tonne of money. I added the ne because I’m fancy, and I believe Stephen Hawking came up with the mathematical equation Sh**tonne.

Anyway Five grand just to the Feminist Majority PAC in 2008? That’ll buy a lot of flannels, and soft ball mitts though so I guess there is an up-side.

“Not employed, None, Philanthropist, Self employed, Peg Yorkin Productions, Producer”

In reality, she is the divorcee of Alan David Yorkin, also known as “Bud Yorkin”, who was a very famous producer/director.

Yorkin spent a year in France in 1970 shooting “Don’t Start the Revolution Without Me” (also called “Two times two” with actor Jack MacGowran.

Bud Yorkin met Polanski through actor Jack MacGowran (who starred in “Polanski’s Dance of the Vampires), and Polanskis and the Yorkins were allegedly thick as thieves until he fled the US.

So, Peg Yorkin appears to have been a Polanski loyalist for almost forty years.
Much longer than she’s been involved in the feminist movement.

Here’s something that keeps popping up every time someone crams his or her foot so far down their own throat they can roll like a hula-hoop: If this isn’t how the rest of the group thinks or feels, maybe the rest of the group needs to, oh, I don’t know, disavow the rogue asshat, criticize his or her douchey statement(s), and distance the organization at large from said asshaberdashery. And I mean this to apply to feminists who truly don’t want to be lumped in with skidmarks like Yorkin, peaceful Muslims who don’t want to be grouped with terrorists, vegetarians who don’t want to be considered Petards, pro-lifers who don’t want to be confused with clinic bombers…the list goes on and on and FRIGGING ON.

If you don’t want to deal with blowback, don’t stand next to the gunman, helping him aim, dumbass. Judas Priest on toast points, people. :[

  42. 42 Beige Oct 6th, 2009 at 7:39 pm

I’m saying that if your spokesperson goes rogue on you, YOU PUT HER DOWN. (Not literally, of course, although I’m sure it’s tempting from time to time.) I’m saying that if your organization as such does NOT want to be tarred with the same brush as a dipshit like Yorkin, the membership of that organization needs to stand on its collective brakes and call shenanigans on her, because otherwise it’s pretty logical for the rest of us to conclude that the group really does think in that colossally f**ked-up way. And as I stated above, that doctrine should hold for any group. LGBT, vegans, pro-lifers, feminists, Muslims, Christians, you name it.

If you let the most frayed edges of your tatty fringe define you, get all happy with the consequences. THAT is what I am saying.

  43. 43 BB Oct 6th, 2009 at 7:42 pm

Scott F – I have to admit I have to eat a little crow on this one. I disliked your anti-feminist rant but this is ridiculous. I am a “social” feminist, not a “political” one. There is doing something because it is the fair and correct thing to do (due to history, etc.) and then there are personal political agendas. I have to agree that many of them don’t make any sense at all except to say how “put upon” women are while espousing wildly contradictory points of view. Most of us are reasonable, but, these *ahem* ladies don’t speak for me or anyone I know.

    Tal – LOL
    C. – thank God the organization seems to have some brains available

Les Paul – We know he’s not the least bit old. I don’t see him that way and, obviously, Hollywood doesn’t. I don’t care how old he is, he was younger when he did the crime. I guess, to many people, if you grew old while a fugitive for 30 years, that additional age is enough to garner sympathy for any crime he committed and, by the virtue of nature and the aging process, he is no longer responsible because of his ability to hide until he was “too old”.

Funny, Peg Yorkin’s sole production credit is listed as the “20th Anniversary of NOW”

NOW is the “National Organization for Women”, who’s former member abd President (1970-1985) Ellie Smeal, is now president and co-founder of Yorkin’s group the “Feminist Majority Group”. Here’s a picture of Smeal (left) and Yorkin (right)

    http://i38.tinypic.com/33zg2mc.jpg

Curiously, the National Organization for Women (NOW) president Terry O’Neill said today that attempts to trivialize or dismiss criminal charges against film director Roman Polanski would undermine the message that sexual abuse is “Never OK.”

    http://www.now.org/press/10-09/10-02.html

So it seems that Yorkin is a loose cannon, putting her personal relationship with Roman Polanski over the good of her organization.

They can’t diselect Yorkin, as Beige suggested, because she essentially OWNS the company, but in protecting Polanski, Yorkin has revealed that the FMG is a political weapon of convenience, not ideology, permanently tainting their legacy.

If you’re a feminist and you want to donate money, NOW is a much better choice than FMG.

Afterall, would you want your funds as a feminist being used to protect Roman Polanski?

  47. 47 fallingstar Oct 7th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

I’m still waiting for the list of celebrity names that are speaking out AGAINST Roman and his crime… not holding my breath though.

  48. 48 Angry Army Wife Oct 7th, 2009 at 1:45 pm

So far I have seen Kirstie Alley and Jewel speak out against him.

  49. 49 Bo Darville Oct 7th, 2009 at 2:32 pm

I wish we could find some evidence of Polanski supporting a Republican. They would turn on him.

  50. 50 StrawberryGirl Oct 7th, 2009 at 7:15 pm

fallingstar–Neil Gaiman, singer John Legend, Kevin Smith, and Salma Hayek aren’t drinking the Polanski/Weinstein Kool-Aid either.

  51. 51 Juliana Oct 7th, 2009 at 7:22 pm

I believe Adam Baldwin spoke out against Polanski too.

  52. 52 Beige Oct 7th, 2009 at 9:34 pm

I love Adam Baldwin. Knowle Rohre (sp?), Jayne, you name it.

  53. 53 jenn Oct 8th, 2009 at 9:03 am

Well now it makes sense – the French Culture minister defending Polanski paid boys for sex. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091007/ap_on_re_eu/eu_france_culture_minister
    UGH!

  54. 54 Beige Oct 8th, 2009 at 11:56 am

Hee. I like how that URL contains the phrase “EU”. I know, European Union and all. But still, consider the story, and tell me if “EU” “EU” doesn’t seem appropriate.

  55. 55 Minnow Oct 8th, 2009 at 2:06 pm

Neil Gaiman (et al)… aren’t drinking the Polanski/Weinstein Kool-Aid either.

Well if that’s true, maybe I can forgive one of my favorite authors for his xenuflection.

  56. 56 fallingstar Oct 8th, 2009 at 6:25 pm

Well I knew about Jewel (from Deceiver) and Kirstie Alley as well. That’s a bit more encouraging to hear there’s a few more too. One of these celebs should start a petition AGAINST Roman.

  57. 57 Beige Oct 8th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

Holy crap. Gaiman is a Scientologist? Am I the last to know? AGAIN?!?

  58. 58 Minnow Oct 8th, 2009 at 7:40 pm

He’s never officially stepped out of the closet, Beige.

His father was one of the founding members which means he has some ties, if only in upbringing. However, if Neil isn’t a practicing member, he’s never bothered to say so in public.

I was shocked though, given that so much of his work draws on historic theology rather than extraterrestrialdianeticrappidnousness.

    A youthful error? Yes, perhaps.
But he’s been punished for this lapse–
    For decades exiled from LA
He knows, as he wakes up each day,
He’ll miss the movers and the shakers.
He’ll never get to see the Lakers.
For just one old and small mischance,
He has to live in Paris, France.
He’s suffered slurs and other stuff.
Has he not suffered quite enough?
How can these people get so riled?
He only raped a single child.

Why make him into some Darth Vader
    For sodomizing one eighth grader?
This man is brilliant, that’s for sure–
    Authentically, a film auteur.
He gets awards that are his due.
    He knows important people, too–
    Important people just like us.
And we know how to make a fuss.
    Celebrities would just be fools
To play by little people’s rules.
    So Roman’s banner we unfurl.
He only raped one little girl.

Jamie Fox has commented on this and I have to say I like what he had to say. He said that if Polanski tried this with his daughter, they would not be able to find the body. We just need more people who go will go with what they really feel instead of just going with the general Hollywood thought process and stop defending the perv

  61. 61 Beige Oct 13th, 2009 at 6:26 pm

    @Jrod: That was fantastic.

  62. 62 Beige Oct 30th, 2009 at 3:33 pm

Apparently Gore Vidal, that noted bearer of a finely-calibrated moral compass, agrees that poor, poor Roman Polanski was the victim here.

    http://entertainment.blogs.foxnews.com/2009/10/30/gore-vidal-thirteen-year-old-roman-polanski-rape-victim-was-a-hooker/?loomia_ow=t0:s0:a16:g2:r5:c0.208949:b28602055:z10

I believe John Wayne Gacy should be Vidal’s bunkie in hell, personally.

  63. 63 Angry Army Wife Oct 30th, 2009 at 4:17 pm

I read that today as well Beige. He said that the 13 year old was a hooker and that Polanski was just an innocent victim.
