Obama Refuses to Meet with Dalai Lama, Wins Nobel Peace Prize

obamalama

Obama is now the recipient of the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize, just 9 months into his term as president.  According to the committee the award is for the president’s:

Extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.

I’m trying really hard not to focus on the fact that the award was given for “effort”.  I guess managing to take Hillary Clinton out of the Senate and placate her is worth something to the Norwegian committee.  But I digress.

Twenty years ago the award was given to the Dalai Lama for good reason:

In recognition of his nonviolent campaign over nearly 40 years to end China’s domination of his homeland.

There are plenty of reasons why it’s utterly ridiculous that the President was awarded a peace prize, but I have a different story to focus on.  This prize comes less than a week after President Obama REFUSED to meet with His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his  visit to Washington.  The reason:

In an attempt to gain favor with China, the United States pressured Tibetan representatives to postpone a meeting between the Dalai Lama and President Obama until after Obama’s summit with his Chinese counterpart, Hu Jintao…The U.S. decision to postpone the meeting appears to be part of a strategy to improve ties with China .

This makes President Obama the first not to welcome the peace prize winner to the White House since the Dalai Lama first began visiting our nation’s capital in 1991.

But wait! What’s that? Obama wanted Bush to boycott the Olympics in China?  Back on the campaign trail Obama and his homegirl Mrs. Clinton called on President Bush to boycott the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony in protest to the repression in Tibet.  They said:

If the Chinese do not take steps to help stop the genocide in Darfur and to respect the dignity, security, and human rights of the Tibetan people, then the President should boycott the opening ceremonies.

Apparently trying to piss off China with a boycott then appeasing China by refusing to meet with arguably one of the world’s most peaceful people, all while winning the Nobel prize is all just part of the job.  I think we owe our diplomatic leaders a big round of applause.

When I first saw the news headline online, I truly thought that it was a joke headline from The Onion.

If there is some kind of Illuninati/Skulls/Bilderberg secret society running this One World, they are bloody idiots. Fasten your seatbelts everyone, it’s going to be a bumpy Armageddon.

P.S. Great article and point, Britney!

He really is just flying by the seat of his pants isn’t he? (I mean, BO – not the Dalai Lama)

  4. 4 Cfrone1 Oct 9th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Here is a question that one of my friends asked….when are the people “nominated” to be considered for a peace prize? If it was anytime within the past few months, before he “did anything”, (not that he has done anything since he has gotten into office…but I digress), how would they have even known what he had attempted to do?

Anyway, any prize that is given to someone as unaccomplished as this guy or Algore, should be blown up…with dynamite maybe? THAT would be poetic justice!

  5. 5 Elle Oct 9th, 2009 at 12:49 pm

Cfrone – the nomination deadline is Feb 1. Obama was sworn in on Jan 20.

Hey, if I promise to try real hard to end conflict between Israel and the PAlestinians, make cars run on pixie dust, and get everyone to sing kumbaya can I get a peace prize too?

  6. 6 Pastafarian Oct 9th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Hey He deserves it!! Guantanamo is closed, the troops are pulling out of Iraq, we aren’t going to send 40,000 more troops to that moonscape they call Afghanistan, Bin Laden has been caught, Iran is giving up it’s ambitions for nuclear weapons…wait, whats that? Oh never mind.

This should make up for only having one term.

I love how liberals like to talk about Darfur while ignoring the one million Rwandans that were massacred on Bill Clinton’s watch when he ordered his staff to stop referring to Rwanda as a “genocide”.

But hey, Rwanda was 12 years ago now… I guess if the statute of expirations on Roman Polanski’s child rape was 31 years, Genocide should be absolvable in 12 years, right?

Liberals. They would never allow in their own home what they allow in their government.

Any bet’s as to whether Time and Newsweek’s 37th (probably more) Obama cover of the year will be identical?

I’m guessing red Background, Obama in front of a teleprompter and a huge gold medal that does not actually look like the prize itself.

This award could backfire completely on Obama.

Jannah, I’m with you. I turned on the computer this a.m., started up Firefox, and there it was. I fully expected the next headline on Google News to read “Elvis Found Wedged Between Kardashian Buttocks, Police Baffled”. During a discussion on FB about all this, a Democrat told me that anyone who didn’t like Obama needed to “Sit down, smile and shut up”. Because that’s how you talk when you’re enlightened and tolerant. And a gaping asshole, but I digress.

When I saw this today on the news, I did not know whether to laugh or cry. The guy was in office for 2 weeks before being nominated. Since then he has been on a world apology tour for the US, the same US that came to bat for many other nations during their time of need. WWII Anyone? This man makes me scream, yell and want to hide for the next 3.5 years cause I am very worried about what will happen next.

If I dilute dishwater, it doesn’t work as well and my hands feel greasy. The Nobel folks dilute the award and it leaves me feeling greasy. I suppose this means that somehow the Nobel prize now equates with dishwater- dirty, skunky, greasy dishwater. The $1.4 mil just makes it worse. I’d love to see how this money is spent.

I’m loving the ‘critics’ comments in this New York Times article, which I’ve included below:

    http://www.nytimes.com/gwire/2009/10/09/09greenwire-obama-wins-nobel-prize-in-part-for-confronting-55250.html?pagewanted=2

    Critics
Some of Obama’s critics from the right also had their own interpretation of the Nobel Peace Prize award.
“The real question Americans are asking is, ‘What has President Obama actually accomplished?’” Michael Steele, the head of the Republican National Committee, said in a press release. “It is unfortunate that the president’s star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights.”
Obama, Steele added, “won’t be receiving any awards from Americans for job creation, fiscal responsibility, or backing up rhetoric with concrete action.”

Iain Martin, deputy editor of the Wall Street Journal Europe, questioned the timing of the award so soon into Obama’s administration.
“Of course, traditionally it has been standard procedure that winners of the prize do their peacemaking first and are only given the prize after they have achieved something,” Martin wrote this morning. “But this innovation sweeps aside such old-fashioned notions of reward following effort. Think about it, it’s so post-modern: a leader can now win the peace prize for saying that he hopes to bring about peace at some point in the future. He doesn’t actually have to do it, he just has to have aspirations. Brilliant.”
On Capitol Hill, Texas Republican Rep. Joe Barton’s spokesman issued this statement in response to a question about Obama’s award:
“The earth and I are more like cousins than actual friends, but I have to admit that it and the sun did a darned good job with the tomatoes in my back yard this summer. I can assure you that represents a decisive break from the past. I don’t expect a Nobel for my bright promise of next year’s tasty Beefsteaks and Early Girls, but now that they’ve started giving Nobel prizes for good things that could happen in the future, I’m as eligible as the next guy, right? As for now, well, I’m no Hendrick Danckerts — who is? — but I’m still a little disappointed to be overlooked. I even think they knew about my plans to build a shed.”
Danckerts was a 17th century Dutch painter and engraver.

oops-Sorry for the double responses above!

You know what this whole thing reminds me of? Those bumper stickers we see all the time: “My kid was student of the month at Little Slaves Indoctrination Center Elementary School”. Everyone gets one just because they show up, not because they did anything excellent or extraordinary. This sends a message of mediocrity and that individualism is not to be desired. Why bother excelling? You’d probably just get punished for it. Just follow along and sing the Obama songs.

I love what the committee had to say

“Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics, multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts.”

So he was picked because they expect him to just role over for the United Nations?
And what “multilateral diplomacy” has he started? All current diplomatic efforts where started by his predecessors.

And this little nugget is freakin’ awesome

Aagot Valle, a lawmaker for the Socialist Left party who joined the committee this year, said she hoped the selection would be viewed as “support and a commitment for Obama.”
“And I hope it will be an inspiration for all those that work with nuclear disarmament and disarmament,”

Funny wasn’t Reagan or Bush Sr. who got the Soviets to sign the original nuclear disarmament deal? And who created the treaty for non-poliferation? Aren’t those bigger accomplishments because…well…they are actual accomplishments?
    (Quotes were from http://apnews.myway.com//article/20091009/D9B7O7L80.html)

Guess I am going to nominate myself for the Physics award because I intend to invent a perpetual motion machine…or maybe a time machine…or maybe that dang flying car they promised us as kids!!

I bet Oprah had something to do with this when she went over with them to Denmark. I can see it now:

“Michelle, what would you like to get Barry for X-Mas this year?”

“Oh I don’t know Oprah, he has virutally everything, I know, how about we get him a Nobel Prixe, he doesn’t have one of those”.

“Don’t worry Girl Friend, I can pull some strings.”

Don’t laugh anything is plausible these days.

I am going to have to disagree and say that the Dalai Lama is one of the most overrated figures around. I know his diehard supporters will go into denial but the reality is that the Dalai did have a go at armed resistance with CIA and India support which the Chinese put down brutally. It was after he had no other cards to play did he go into his humble peaceful monk schtick. I’m not denying that the Tibetans should have a right to live freely in their own country, only that the Dalai isn’t who Westerners think he really is.

    LOL, Elle.

I like the comment on the Heisman vote site that Obama should win the Cy Young award for pitchers, since he threw that first pitch. I think that’s going too far. After all, he actually DID throw a pitch, though one could wonder if he really put any effort into it. Maybe that will take it down to the new requirements for prizes…

The fact that he won over Greg Mortenson (the guy who wrote Three Cups of Tea), whose Central Asia foundation has built over 130 schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan (many of which serve girls as well as boys) sickens me. There are plenty of people who spend their lives living alongside the people they serve, who could do even more good with the prize money, who DON’T dedicate their lives to gaining glory and accolades. Give the Peace Prize to them, not megalomaniacs just because they aren’t W and made some pretty speeches.

If pretty speeches get you the Peace Prize, there are a lot of beauty contestants who got overlooked.

The determination for this occurred when Obama only had 12 days as President.

The Nobel Academy has also screwed up some of the science prizes.

In 1967, an English graduate student named Jocelyn Bell discovered the first pulsar–and the Nobel prize was later awarded, to her advisor.

Many scientists were outraged; Fred Hoyle wrote a letter of protest that appeared in the Times of London.

Then, in 1983, when the Nobel prize was awarded for stellar nucleosynthesis–the origin of elements in stars, an idea Hoyle had pioneered–it went not to Hoyle but to William Fowler.

“Fred was the one who had the original idea of synthesizing elements in stars,” said Fowler. “The person who had the original idea certainly should get the prize.” [quoted in Ken Croswell's book The Alchemy of the Heavens.]

Why was Hoyle denied the prize? Simple: because he had criticized the Nobel Academy!

From FreeRepublic.com. This is what Obama did to deserve the Nobel:

The president took office only 12 days earlier on January 20.

Let’s take a look at the president’s first 12 days in the White House
according to his public schedule to see what he did to deserve a Nobel
    Peace Prize:

January 20: Sworn in as president. Went to a parade. Partied.

January 21: Asked bureaucrats to re-write guidelines for information
requests. Held an “open house” party at the White House.

January 22: Signed Executive Orders: Executive Branch workers to take
ethics pledge; re-affirmed Army Field Manuel techniques for
interrogations; expressed desire to close Gitmo (how’s that working out?)

January 23: Ordered the release of federal funding to pay for abortions
in foreign countries. Lunch with Joe Biden; met with Tim Geithner.

January 24: Budget meeting with economic team.

    January 25: Skipped church.

January 26: Gave speech about jobs and energy. Met with Hillary Clinton.
    Attended Geithner’s swearing in ceremony.

January 27: Met with Republicans. Spoke at a clock tower in Ohio.

January 28: Economic meetings in the morning, met with Defense secretary
    in the afternoon.

January 29: Signed Ledbetter Bill overturning US Supreme Court decision
on lawsuits over wages. Party in the State Room. Met with Biden.

January 30: Met economic advisers. Gave speech on Middle Class Working
Families Task Force. Met with senior enlisted military officials.

January 31: Took the day off.

February 1: Skipped church. Threw a Super Bowl party.

So, I guess all we have to do is party, skip church, go to a couple of meetings, and party some more. Huh. Who knew?

  66. 66 Pastafarian Oct 10th, 2009 at 11:00 pm

Next year’s prize is mine then! Really, who deserves it more? No one skips church like me.
I’ll start on my speech tonight!

    **Rubbing hands together**
Once that prize is mine I’ll grind my enemies under my heel.

    “I’m humbled blah, blah, blah…”

I am sure William and Mary will agree that my excellent grades from my first couple semesters are enough work/effort to entitle me to a transfer, and indeed, enough to earn me my BA/BS without additional classes. After all, I have clearly shown my intent, and that is what truly matters. I look forward to receiving my sheepskin directly.

  69. 69 AllyKat Oct 11th, 2009 at 2:54 am

Whoops, “awareded” should be “awarded”. Clearly, the vast right wing conspiracy has hijacked my keyboard. It’s also because of global warming.

  70. 70 Conrad Oct 11th, 2009 at 5:00 am

Anybody here watch Glenn Beck on FNC?

  71. 71 quigonkick Oct 11th, 2009 at 3:44 pm

He’s easily Grandfather of the Year. Not even a second thought needed.

I’m sure he intends on having grandkids someday.

  72. 72 Reaver Oct 11th, 2009 at 7:13 pm

And the next nobel peace prize goes to… every beauty pageant contestant who ever said “If I could only have one wish it would be for world peace”.

  73. 73 Pearce, PhD Oct 11th, 2009 at 8:51 pm

I’m going to just start putting “PhD” after my name. ’cause you know, I’ve had a few serious discussions about going back to school for my doctorate, and I have a masters already. Also, I enjoy having parties. Unlike Obama, however, I prefer jungle juice to beer. Which clearly makes my case even stronger. In the same way that the 190 proof booze I mix with my Kool-Aid is stronger than Bud Light.

  74. 74 Beige Oct 11th, 2009 at 9:08 pm

Conrad, I spent the night in the ER w/a suspected heart attack recently, so I am not allowed to watch much political stuff on TV anymore. What did Beck say?

  75. 75 Beige Oct 11th, 2009 at 9:10 pm

That looks SO STUPID and melodramatic. It was not actually a heart attack. Just to clarify.

  76. 76 Conrad Oct 11th, 2009 at 10:06 pm

    Here’s Becks web page.

Ever notice that OB never says WE. It’s always I this & I that, I,I,I.
Well at least he’ll have no one to blame but himself for all the things he never did.

  78. 78 Angry Army Wife Oct 12th, 2009 at 8:25 am

Oh no. I am sure he will blame Bush at some point. His reason for getting the Nobel Peace Prize – cause he was not Bush. I would gladly have Bush stand watch for my safety anyday over this buffoon. He scares me.

  79. 79 Minnow Oct 12th, 2009 at 11:07 am

By OB receiving the NPP. It has lowered it’s prestige to a all time low and never to recover from it. All past great reciprocants have just been slapped in the face.

In that case, I fully support giving Uhhbama the Prize.

I’ve wanted to slap Carter and Gore for years now.

  80. 80 Mermaid Oct 12th, 2009 at 1:02 pm

I’m reading this book called Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein. She writes about Milton Freedman and his Chicago School and the whole Pinochet thing in South America (most of you seem to be better read than me so you probably are already familiar with all this so I won’t detail – I’m playing catch-up) and the total destruction of the middle class and democracy in Chile and other countries in SA.

Milton Freedman got a nobel prize for all this economic ‘brilliance’ of his. What it looks like to me is that when govt and corporations get together to create a free market, it ain’t gonna turn out well for anyone except the govt and the hugely wealthy. I thought that was called fascism.

I don’t think this is what Ayn Rand had in mind.

And it chills me to see what is happening in this country. It’s like we are on the same path. I keep waiting for people to disappear.

so the nobel prizes have been BS for a long time?

I never thought I’d say this – I wasn’t a fan of Bush but Damn! I prefer him over this current butthades!

  81. 81 Angry Army Wife Oct 12th, 2009 at 1:03 pm

The Nobel Peace Prize went down in my eyes when CArter was rewarded with it. Then Al Gore. It just confirmed my thoughts when they awarded it to Obama.

  82. 82 Simon Scowl Oct 12th, 2009 at 2:23 pm

    Now read this.

  83. 83 Pastafarian Oct 12th, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Ironically Naomi Klein isn’t giving the book away. It’s $28.

And yes. Reading that would be torture.

  84. 84 Mermaid Oct 12th, 2009 at 2:48 pm

Thanks, Mr. Scowl, for the balance. I’ve been feeling pretty bad reading that book because I wanted to consider what she had to say (I don’t know anything about Naomi Klein – is she a total bitch?) even though, (and especially because) it goes against what I think about capitalism and individual freedom in general. I guess when greedy people get involved, any system can be corrupted and when an -ism is taken to the extreme, someone suffers. But I’ll keep an open mind about Milton Freedman.

I printed the article and have tucked it into the book for the next person who checks it out of the library (lol).

  85. 85 Mermaid Oct 12th, 2009 at 2:52 pm

Hey Pastafarian, the only books I buy are how to books – like origami and knot tying and cookbooks.

  86. 86 Pastafarian Oct 12th, 2009 at 2:54 pm

    Cool.

  87. 87 Pastafarian Oct 12th, 2009 at 5:00 pm

    Wait. Knot tying?

  88. 88 mermaid Oct 12th, 2009 at 7:51 pm

  89. 89 MC Mom Oct 13th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

All this brings to mind the immortal words of noted philosopher Billy Flynn, from the musical Chicago:

Give ‘em the old razzle dazzle
    Razzle Dazzle ‘em
Give ‘em an act with lots of flash in it
And the reaction will be passionate
Give ‘em the old hocus pocus
    Bead and feather ‘em
How can they see with sequins in their eyes?

Good quote, MC Mom. Yet no matter how much I hear this “rock star” hype about Barry, I don’t see it. To me, he’s just swaggeringly, staggeringly self-regarding and arrogant, with precious little to back it up. He has got to be the single most vain and self-infatuated president this country has ever had.

  91. 91 Angry Army Wife Oct 13th, 2009 at 4:43 pm

Is it just me or does his nose get higher in the air everytime I see him?

  92. 92 Angry Army Wife Oct 13th, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Is it just me or does his nose seem to get higher in the air everytime I see him? Like he is smelling something bad and the smell is America.

  93. 93 Don Oct 14th, 2009 at 12:52 am

I think that war is a bad thing. I have not done anything to stop wars yet. Can I have an Peace Prize too?
Seems like Obama has said yes to another 13,000 troops in Afganistan. Not exactly peace-keeping.

  94. 94 Pearce, PhD Oct 14th, 2009 at 5:57 am

Don, you should just claim a doctorate for yourself as I’ve done. It’s what all the cool kids do these days.

  95. 95 Angry Army Wife Oct 14th, 2009 at 8:51 am

Don, not to mention bombing the moon on the day he accepted the prize. Yep, hope and change is coming :)

  96. 96 ColeMarie Soleil Oct 17th, 2009 at 8:49 am

The president gets the Nobel Peace Prize.
    Righhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhht.

Anyone else but me find it insulting?
Name one thing, just ONE thing that he
has done worth giving him a vacation for
    and I’ll shut up.

AHHHHHHHH time’s up. I couldn’t think of one either.

Meh, a puppet is still a puppet :X
Give the puppet a nobel peace prize?
    He’s just a fancy puppet.

  97. 97 benjamin Jan 28th, 2010 at 9:25 am

i don’t believe in this nobel peace prize anyway. hey you guys, this was invented to clear the name of a guy who invented wmd. the father of all terrorist!
