Remember Norm Macdonald? He used to be on Saturday Night Live. Did Weekend Update. He got fired for making too many OJ jokes or something, but a year or so later he was invited to guest-host. During his monologue, he said something like, “A year ago, I wasn’t good enough to even be in the building. Now I’m good enough to host the show!”
For some reason, I was reminded of this while reading Oprah’s latest press release (I read them all, of course):
In a world exclusive, Oprah Winfrey will interview former Alaska governor Sarah Palin for an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show to air Monday, November 16, 2009. Winfrey and Palin will meet for the very first time on the episode, which will mark Palin’s first interview to discuss her upcoming book, Going Rogue: An American Life and her first-ever appearance on the Oprah show.
As you may recall, last year Oprah refused to have Palin on her show during the campaign, saying she didn’t want to provide a platform for any of the candidates. This despite the fact that she’d officially endorsed Obama, the first time she’d done so for any presidential candidate, and even offered to produce the half-hour primetime infomercial he did right before the election.
Oprah then whined when Palin turned down her gracious interview offer after the election, saying:
“I went and tried to talk to Sarah Palin and instead she talked to Greta Van Susteren. She talked to Matt Lauer. She talked to Larry King, but she didn’t talk to me. But maybe she’ll talk to me now that she has a book deal.”
Which seems like a catty thing to say to someone you’re trying to woo, but apparently it worked. Now everything’s peachy. Now her interview with Palin is a “world exclusive.” The moose-hunter has been hunted down by the moose.
I hope Oprah asks Palin for some fitness tips. (Rule #1: No more than one Meat Lover’s Special per sitting!) And then Oprah can give her some handy hints on how to be childless and unmarried at 50+.

Amazing how friendly people are when you have something they want: definite conservative viewers. Oprah’s numbers are way down, and a lot of people say it’s because conservative viewers were turned off by the Obama love/but I’m really apolitical crap.
The way I feel about Oprah is the same way I feel about women’s magazines (several of whom are very eager to stump for the pro-choice candidate): I watch/read the product for entertainment, not to get preached at about politics. If I want that, I’ll watch a 24-hour news channel. I really don’t want to hear about why Glamour, Cosmo or Oprah thinks I should vote or think “X” way.
And I am totally ordering Palin’s book. YOU go, girl!
Who is the bigger sell out here?
I believe that Sarah Palin is two degrees away of the Loony Bin but I admire her for her consistency. Oprah got what she just deserved.
Pailn’s a politician and so going on any show for exposure isn’t selling out, it’s all part of the game. Here’s hoping she call Oprah out though.
I can make 2 promises as to what will happen:
1. There will be a huge spike in ratings for Oprah- solidifying Palin’s appeal and popularity among a large portion of the populace.
2. The Left will foam at the mouth and scream about how illiterate, stoopid, retarded, maroonic, dumb, unedumacted, idiotic, oh, and eeeeeevil Palin is and how she didn’t write her book.
Does Opie realize that Sarah doesn’t have people like the McCain losers forcing her to pull her punches and talk nice when challenged? The gloves are off and if Opie decides to attack Sarah she is going to show ‘the queen” how vicious a Hockey Mom with an agenda can be. Not to mention the fact that Sarah is much more savy now that she has had a year to prepare for the Obama lovers she will meet.
I think Sarah Palin is unelectable, but no one got smeared like Sarah Palin got smeared.
Funny how we heard about 17 year old Bristol Palin becoming pregnant a million times, but the media kind of missed the fact that Obama’s mother was 17 when she became pregnant also.
Not really relevant until Sarah Palin’s gardner’s brother in law gets arrested for a Roman Polanski, but I’m guessing at that time the press will have continued to ask Obama zero questions about his brother Samson’s sexual assault on a thirteen year old in the UK.
Maverick, Rogue, Genius, or Unstable. Time will tell.
It’s weird this is up today. I saw Oprah on TV today. She is HUGE! Shockingly huge. What the Hell happened to her?
Today.
Just thought I’d add that. I only used it twice in one sentence.
Really? You think she’s unelectable? I don’t think that at all.
You can’t sell this woman short as she continues to surprise. Considering her humble beginnings she sure knows how to get elected.
If she is not electable it is becuase she was smeared so horribly. I do think she can get elected though. Will she? That’s a whole other matter.
As to her being “unstable”. That’s a talking point I keep hearing from the Left and the people are repeating it. I ask “why do you say she is unstable?” Leaving office prematurely is not a valid argument.
I wonder is Sarah will bring a case of Hostess Cupcakes to fend off the ginormous she-beast during the “interview”?
I do. There are zero secrets in the Internet age and I think the candidates of the future will be more Obama-like in their lack of political history or footprint.
Its hard to indict someone’s track record when they have almost no record of accomplishments, hence silent lawyers with shiny shoes, virtual yet attractive talking heads with little track record to belie their true agenda, they will adopt the exact median populist position necessary to win elections, only to abandon it without apology immediately after the election.
The media failed to do due diligence on Obama and the performed over digilence on Palin.
Perception is reality, and the for the amount of campaign money it would cost to correct public perception on Sarah Palin could elect someone like Bobby Jindal five times over.
There are five or six loose threads on the Obama presidency that could unravel the whole thing, and in a few years, I’m relatively confident anyone who reads this today will agree with me.
Fortunate- It would appear you are making the argument that only Democrats will be the elected candidates of the future.
When you say “future candidates….in their lack of political history or footprint” you can only be talking about Democrats. The media has had no problem not investigating one of their own as you aptly pointed out with Palin.
A Republican with no history? Why, s/he is inexperienced and unelectable (ref: Palin attacks). If there is a history it will be turned inside and out to find the smallest charge that can be leveled against them.
Oh come on, Deceiver! You guys hunt down the douchiest photos out there! I know there’s a picture of Oprah wolfing down a sack of Big Macs somewhere out there.
She might be unelectable today, but the Democrats are changing that as we speak. Every NAMBLA fan who gets a czar post, every ACORN-related bit of skulduggery, every time The Anointed Holy Lord and Savior of Poor Downtrodden Criminals Everywhere is found to have ties to terrorists and race-baiters, a few more people start looking at Palin with fresh eyes. I’m not sure that she’d even have to do anything one way or another; the Democrats are screwing the pooch with a vigor nobody’s seen since Caligula.
I’d like to see Palin on the view – gloves off and no holds barred. Smack those dummies upside the head.
Cracker vs. Snacker. Priceless and one of the funniest things I’ve heard all day.
No doubt, did Oprah buy Deceiver?
I shudder to think what conclusions Jrod might erroneously arrive at based on that picture alone. :0
I’m with you there Beige.
Yesterday I saw a comment online where someone said something to the effect of:
“Why doesn’t Obama just borrow a zillion dollars from China so he can hire everyone?
We’d have 100% employment, no one would get foreclosed on, and it wouldn’t cost taxpayers anything because we borrowed it from China”
I second the motion (that Palin go on “The View”). I would positively LOVE to see her open a tall frosty can of whoopass on those she-Tazzes.
Palin would be awesome on the “view” but I bet those ladies are afraid of her. After all, she is everything they are not. I actually might record this Oprah to watch it. I have not watched Oprah in years because I want to watch TV for entertainment not to be told what to do or what not to do. And yes, I have her book on my list of Christmas gifts. Say what you will about Sarah, she became Governor somehow.
I still laugh that anyone watching thought Biden won the Palin-Biden debate.
I kept expecting him to call her “Little Lady”. I wonder if Obama keeps Biden locked in the VP’s quarters or how he keeps him completely out of the public eye?
Least visible VP in US history.
wow — this will be good. i’ve always wanted to know what sarah REALLY thinks about her daughter’s idiot father of her child. he’s a high school drop out, 19, and posing for playgirl (CLASSY) oh and i’m sure he’ll have a book deal or something. how low can you go? i wonder if oprah will ask her anything about that.
Katie – I think Oprah is going to touch on a the subject of Bristol and that skeevey ex-boyfriend but probably in a sympathetic way. This will be a friendly meeting. O is looking to regain some of the fans she lost when she threw her weight behind BO. No way she is going to reel them in by having Palin on the show and then treat her badly.
I must be one of the few people who can not stand Oprah. And I am truly saddened that Sarah Palin is going on her show. I wish that, again, she would do every show put Oprah’s.
And as for those comments about Oprah eating, please don’t do that especially with the weekend coming up. I would hate to see that picture all weekend long.
I want Oprah to ask Sarah, “So Levi has this new pimping red Ford truck, but how is he doing with child support payments and helping out the baby?” The fact that he hooked up with Kathie Griffith shows that he is a leech and a scumbag. I thought he looked nice when I saw them here live when McCain announced her as his running mate.
The reason why the Dems are attacking her is because she has what they do not have – experience. She was a Mayor and a Governor of a large state. Obama spent more time campaigning then being an actual Senator. I kept laughing on how they were comparing her experience to his when he was running for President and she was running for Vice President. Shouldn’t they have been comparing his experience to McCain’s? Which still was dimming compared to the Maverick.
I can’t muster the energy to hate Oprah; she evokes the same emotional gradient in me as a big glass of freshly-stirred Tang.
But as time goes by, I’m loving Palin more and more. In a platonic, fangirl sort of way. Anybody that can get “progressives” peeing their pants in fury like she does is a role model for sure.
@Ln, uh no, there are more people that can’t stand Opie, I am one of them. Next to Rosie ODonnell, she is the reason day time television is total crap.
While reading these post I experienced a Brain Fart.
Suppose OB was meant to win the election by divine intervention.
Not getting the win, the cry of foul by his supporters would be never ending.
By winning, he alone is showing what a screw up he is. There by sealing the fact his supporters, bias news media,
made the wrong choice w/ no one to blame be themselves.
Conrad, but they will still find a way to blame someone other than themselves. They are still blaming Bush, even for losing the Olympic bid. I don’t think they would ever take the blame.
First off, “the moose-hunter has been hunted down by the moose”. Too much. I love it.
Second, what is up with Opie’s eyes? She has the oddest thing going on with them.
Third, who the f*ck listens to Opie. That “moose” has THE worst bullshit detector EVER. She is an idiot and her followers are even worse. That said, I hope that the Cult of Opie follow her lead and get behind Palin for ‘12.
As for The View….I can’t even stomach that show. I mean, now that Behar has her own show?!?! That “thing’s” voice is like nails on a chalkboard and she’s about as intelligent as a piece of lard. I’d LOVE to see Palin dominate her.
p.s. Beige…which czar is connected with NAMBLA. I missed that one.
Conrad,
OB’s are tampons. Or are you trying to be clever and gross and the same time?
FS – “I do. There are zero secrets in the Internet age and I think the candidates of the future will be more Obama-like in their lack of political history or footprint.”
What secrets of Palin’s have we not heard then? I can’t imagine that if there weren’t more we wouldn’t have heard them yet. What, with Andrew Sullivan constantly staring at her vagina, and every other lefty seemingly terrified of her for whatever reason, why aren’t they pawing through her garbage everyday digging up more stuff? Is it because she resigned her governorship to make money? I mean what could be more Republican? And anyway I always try to do the opposite of what the internet says. Remember “Snakes on a Plane”? Yeah me either.
Anyway, it’s a long way off yet. I hope she runs.
Hey Pasta, I think everything on Sarah Palin is in the open, and I know many conservatives considered her to be a better candidate than McCain, I just think the DNC smear machine worked, and people don’t realize that while she didn’t say it, that she actually can see Alaska from her house, and that:
1. Alaska is both the only state that has been invaded by foreign military twice in the last 200 years,
2. Due to Alaska’s strategic position on the West Coast, and particularly on the front line of the Soviet Union, being Commander in Chief of the Alaska National Guard is signifcantly more important than being the Commander in Chief of at least 47 other state’s National Guards.
I’m also with Jenn on her prediction that Oprah’s strategy is to reel in errant viewers.
I also think Palin should refuse to go on Oprah’s show.
Now that Obama is tanking, Oprah realizes she still needs a job in 2012 and that Obama has not lived up to his promise, and has actually reflected poorly on her.
By going on her show, Palin is kind of forgiving Oprah and the Obama smear machine, which personally I think she should not do.
That said, it would sell a lot of books, and I don’t begrudge Ms. Palin for doing what it takes to promote her book.
Wouldn’t the vast majority of Oprah’s audience be exactly the kind of people that would support, or at least secretly vote for Palin? Suburban housewives, mostly white, lower to middle class working types? Oprah has a lot of power and I think if she were to go on that show, and show she isn’t a petty, completely inexperienced politician with a growing enemies list she’ll be better off. She can take the high road and go on it. At least that’s what I’d tell her.
I did like her a lot more than the other Republican candidates the last time around, and she was just a VP pick but I voted Libertarian anyway because there wasn’t a chance in the world He wasn’t gonna win Illinois. I think if she goes on that show, and does well, maybe we can stop listening to unfunny comediennes (I’m looking at you Tina Fey) doing half-assed jokes about her. I don’t know like I said it’s still a long way off. Let’s see what happens in 2010, and maybe Obama will continue to slowly implode.
“I must be one of the few people who can not stand Oprah.”
Nope, I can’t stand her either. I think it’s bizarre how people let her determine what they read and what weird “health” treatment to go for and buy a magazine where she puts herself on the cover every issue, and what is she? A talk-show host.
I have full faith that Sarah Palin will come out of this looking good – to regular people, if not celebrities and the media.
Fortunate_Son: I think it’s a smart move on her part to go on Oprah; it gives off the impression that she’s classy enough to be over all the pettiness. Then people who are still insulting her look even worse.
Cheney/Palin 2012! (Dick or Lynn)
Everyone see the book coming out from the Left called “Going Rouge”?
http://hotair.com/archives/2009/10/21/palin-haters-to-release-lookalike-attack-book-on-nov-17/
What a bunch of dishonest losers…..
You know what should happen? A million people should buy the look a like book, don’t even crack them open, wait 3 or 4 days then return them. I bet that would wreak havoc with someone’s inventory somehow. Just to be annoying.
@cara: I don’t know if Kevin Jennings (the “safe schools” czar) is connected with NAMBLA, but he has been known to offer praise for them.
@Hurricane I just looked that up, since you mentioned it. Yuck. You know if anyone tried doing that to Obama they would be burned at the stake. I don’t agree with everything Sarah Palin stands for (I don’t with any politician), but I admire her and I will definitely be buying her book when it hits the stands. And maybe I’ll buy up a stack of them and hand them out as Christmas gifts to the handful of liberals in my family.
Maybe Pasta, but you always run the risk of the “Dating Game” edit.
When someone else controls the edit, with enough footage, they can condense your interview into any character they want you to portray.
You might be a very handsome, self assured guy who women love, but when you get to the set, the director says “Oh, I’m sorry… we’ve already cast the two ‘cool’ guys. You’re going to be the desparate, whiny guy”.
Oprah is an Obama minion who sacrificed a significant portion of her audience to tirelessly support Barack Obama. I think it is underestimating her partisanship to assume Oprah would not attempt to further smear Sarah Palin to make Barack Obama look good.
Look at the way the White House attack dog Robert Gibbs singles out media personalities who disagree with the White House. Its unprofessional, its completely partisan, but he gets a lot of free air time and some of it sticks.
History will show Robert Gibbs did both Obama and the US a disservice.
thank you BEIGE. How anyone can find praise for an organization such as NAMBLA just blows me away. What’s there to praise. (and I know that’s an across the board problem. Lib’s, conserv’s and in betweens) It’s just bizarre. And “safe school” czar non the less. Reminds me of the NOMC (nat. org for mis.child.) guy busted for relationships with the little guys. Just Crazy
Ln: Ay,e all around.
“Oprah’s numbers are way down”
A very excellent point. I remember when Oprah refused to have Palin on her show. A LOT of her viewers felt very betrayed. They were ANGRY. I read quite a few comments on Oprah’s blog (or some such official vehicle) which were surprising in their vitriol – and Oprah (or her people, more likely) was taking the comments down about as fast as they went up. I got the feeling then that those folks weren’t going to forget any time soon. (Or ever.) So, yeah – Oprah is probably doing this because she sort of HAS to. (And since she backhanded Palin for needing an ‘ulterior motive’ – her book – for coming on her show, this alone makes Oprah a hypocrite of the first order.)
“Who is the bigger sell out here?”
Now let’s not turn this into a contest.
Can I ask what exactly is wrong about being “childless and unmarried at 50+.”?
That whole article was well written, Simon, up until that point.
Even the fat jibes were okay with me, but the “childless and unmarried at 50+” comment feels quite off. There’s nothing wrong with not having a child or not being married, and I say this as a married mother of two.
Nothing. I just figured it would hurt her feelings if she ever read it.
@Fortunate Son, don’t you mean that OB has failed to live up to Opie’s promise?
I don’t have any kids.
THAT I KNOW OF!
**rearranges mullet **
WEll Obama never made her Media czar or what other crazy Czar he makes up, so she is unhappy with his holiness. Plus, a lot of angry housewives got mad at Oprah and her profits and ratings went down. She is still a hypocrite because her smile will be fake, just like her advice and hair.
And many of Obama Czars are linked to people who have horrendous pasts. The current Safe School Czar actually told a 15 yo who had sex with an adult that he hopes he wore a condem. Nothing more. And yes, he praises the guy who founded the Man/Boy love group. Disgusting! If this was Bush, the media would have this on the front page of every newspaper. Fox News, the non-news channel, according to Obama is the only one who dares to question him.
“@cara: I don’t know if Kevin Jennings (the “safe schools” czar) is connected with NAMBLA, but he has been known to offer praise for them.”
No, not quite – he praised Harry Hay, who did do some good things for the gay rights movement but was also a NAMBLA supporter. Jennings claimed he was praising Hay for the non-NAMBLA-related things he did. Obviously it was a dumb move on Jennings’s part and makes you wonder about the guy’s judgment, but saying that “he has been known to offer praise for NAMBLA” isn’t true.
Okay, then. Thanks for the correction, Tal.
@ Lady Ella- I think it’s because Oprah tries to make herself a role model and give relationship, love, parenting, dieting and life advice to millions of women, when she isn’t really the best person to be a role model in those areas. She’s had a weird and rocky pseudo-relationship with what’s-his-name, gains and drops more pounds in a month than I even consume in a year, and being 50+ and unmarried doesn’t qualify you to give any advice at all in her areas of “expertise” to the average American woman.
Oprah’s numbers must be hurting.
Today she did a special in Dallas Texas, wearing a ten gallon hat.
You couldn’t make this stuff up.
And wasn’t she just photgraphed at a fair in Texas chowing down on Corn dogs wow, must be some diet.
Oprah is allegedly offering Stedman Graham a palimony settlement in excess of $100M.
