Mischa Barton Quits Television, Wants ‘More Serious Roles’

mischa-barton-casting-couchDespite how producers are banging down her door, Mischa Barton says she’s being picky these days about the roles she accepts:

“I think I need to back away from the whole TV approach,” she said. “That whole world of network television, probably isn’t, for me, a good idea now. I need to start reading for more serious roles.”

But she’s not sure exactly what the next project will be.

“It’s too early to tell yet,” she said. “I’m passing on all the [early] offers, because that’s not the stuff you want to do. I want to go fight for interesting things and look for something that’s going to be interesting for me … as a role.”

Which, whatever. In the past, she’s had no problem at all doing soapy teen dramas:

And despite her misgivings, Barton won’t rule out a return to the small screen altogether.

She concedes, “It’s not that I dislike doing television at all. It would be interesting having more creative control over where the storylines go or the characters. But for the right thing, of course.”

And after her involuntary psychiatric hold this summer, she was all too grateful to return to work on the set of The Beautiful Life. I guess things change when your show gets canceled after two episodes and you have a persistent reputation as an incorrigible diva. Seeking out serious movie gigs like the leading role she had in last year’s Assassination of a High School President is much more prestigious and befitting an actress of her caliber, I’m sure.

Her path seems a familiar one. Maybe Mischa has become BFF’s with Lindsay Lohan and is following her advise, because it has worked so well for Lindsay.

This reminds me strongly of the quote from Kathy “Alien From L.A.” Ireland, who remarked that her successful modeling career made it possible for her to be “much more selective” about the roles she chose.

Mischa, baby, you’re crazy. Just because you make no sense doesn’t mean it’s art.
