Back in 2001, in the wake of 9/11, Brad Pitt said the following about America’s dependence on foreign oil:
“We keep going back into the history of these extremists, these fundamentalists, and understanding the Islamic culture, and understanding foreign policy. We’re embracing religion, which is a beautiful thing to see, but the thing no one is talking about is oil. Why don’t we set ourselves free? We have the technology for electric cars, and we have other power sources. Yes, it would be expensive to make the switch over, but we could, and we would have complete autonomy from our need for oil. We would not have to rape Alaska, and we wouldn’t have to be dependent on those guys over there. In the long term, if we could free ourselves from the dependency of oil, we’d be alright.”
Good idea! And according to the fine folks at Treehugger.com, “He’s swapped his fleet of conventional cars for hybrids, and was among celebrities to be a given a sneak preview of the new Lexus RX 400h luxury SUV hybrid.” Sounds like he’s really doing his part to save the planet and stuff.
Hey, wait. You know how Pitt had a bit of a motorcycle wreck the other day? He collects them, apparently. Motorcycles, not wrecks. And he just bought a new Camaro:

So… what happened to “setting ourselves free”? What sort of example is this setting, if he really wants “complete autonomy”?
Hey guys, I think maybe Brad Pitt is full of crap.

Or ALS, at his age?
Yay! Thanks for the hat tip Deceiver. The thing that pisses me off is that he preaches to us that we shouldn’t be dependent on oil. So he’s going to be the ideal example for all of us poor oil dependent souls. Yet, when the most anticipated muscle car of the year becomes available he just has to buy one(since you know he only has one form of transportation which he relies on since he’s NEVER driven anywhere). Pure hypocrite. I wonder how big his carbon footprint is from jetting all over the world with Angelina Jolie in order to adopt a kid from each country.
referring to the 1st comment..
i think you’re right, but i think he’s too young to be going thru this ALS thing (lol)
yeah, what happened to the lets have autonmy and not be dependent on oil..
save the earth…
brad???
Once again all this crap some celeb spews about making changes in the way one thinks and lives is about the hoi polloi changing the way they think and live. God forbid Pitt may actually have to walk the walk.
And why do these “people” (just had to put that in quotes) think that we only use oil for fueling vehicles?
To paraphrase Jrod, I hit it. Especially the mighty fine BP in Fight Club. Wouldn’t care what he was talking about.
He lost me a long time ago when he decided to have an affair with that women, Angie. Even though I like his hand in helping to rebuild New Orleans with more efficient energy homes, I wish he and his buddy Georgie would just go away.
Dude! I got a Camaro too!!
*Cranks Dio on the car stereo, tosses Brad an Old Style*
Honestly, if I had as much money as Brad Pitt, I’d be going out and spending it on all kinds of fun stuff too, but I HOPE that I would also have the sense to keep my big yap shut and just enjoy my good fortune without feeling the need to tell the rest of the world what THEY should do. He collects vehicles and Angelina collects children. whoo hoo.
I totally agree with you, Mermaid. I don’t begrudge Pitt his toys. But he seriously needs to step way, WAY off with the preaching about them.
BTW – I wonder how efficient his “country” home in France is. Last time I saw a pic of it, it was massive, and don’t the Pitt Jolies travel on private jets everywhere?
So it is beautiful that we are embracing religion? I’m not sure what context he is saying this in. According to this genius there is no God so why then is it beautiful to embrace religion?
Brad, if you are reading this, do yourself a favor and don’t open your mouth. It is embarrassing for you as well as for the rest of us. It is just so hard to watch a movie without thinking about how the star is a complete friggin’ moron.
@AAW: IIRC, the sanctimonious Jolie-Pitts are both pilots. So they fly their OWN fuel-guzzling planes. Couldn’t you just weep at the sacrifices they’re prepared to make?
And he just bought a new Camaro
A f_cking camaro?!? Who the hell drives a camaro?
“Yes, it would be expensive to make the switch over, but we could…”
Maybe he could, the rest of us working sucks can’t afford to run out and buy a new car, I’m fine with my 97 Honda Civic, I checked my MPG after a trip the other day and got 41.7 to the gallon. Better than 99% of the hybrids out there.
Just where do these celebrities think electricity comes from, by flying kites with keys attached to the string? Most electric power plants are coal or oil fired (can’t have nuclear power plants cuz those are bad – just ask Jackson Browne, no nukes, no nukes). Here in CA we have brown outs due to high electrical demand so let’s all plug in our cars.
Maybe Brad could get an electric plane, see how far he gets with that.
That is a great idea Jimmy. Everytime one of these people goes to the media and mentions how we need to get rid of foreign oil dependency, global warming and anything else that gets them on this website we should provide them with an electric plan for their next trip. I think we would have have a massive decrease in 1)stupid people and 2)stupid people talking to the press.
I read this and think… maybe motorcycles are a low impact way to travel the earth.
Then I look through page after page of extremely cool, extremely expensive Brad Pitt motorcycles (Some of these bikes he owns go for the price of a used aircraft. ) and it hits me.
This is the ultimate hypocrisy.
Brad Pitt is an addicted gasoline internal combustion junkie.
Ohhh, but he looked so GOOD in Troy…
I don’t see the appeal of Brad Pitt……I’m a Hugh Jackman gal..:^D
Anyways, if the general public would lose the hunger for all the media bits that get dropped by celebs they’d lose the influence they have over general public….the general public being those of the population that actually care what the celebs’ opinions are on such stupid petty things like how the rest of us should be living while they burn jet fuel to continent-hop whenever the mood strikes them.
I’m glad somebody here mentioned that electricity comes from coal, because that was my first thought. Yup, let’s end our reliance on oil so that we can rely on coal some more.
TYPO ALERT! ALZ not ALS. Oh what a Twit I be.
“I got a bitchen Camaro!”
I think a lot of well-meaning, but also possibly quite stupid, people just throw out some “green”-sounding suggestion without thinking it through. Solar power? Yeah, it’s green–until you have to CLEAN the solar panels, which requires water and chemicals. Which makes Mother Earth cry bitter blue tears of woe, and then kill a kitten. Electricity? As already mentioned, it requires coal, unless you really just want to spend 8 hours on a treadmill to make a slice of toast. Even if we stopped using oil for automotive purposes TODAY, we’d still need petrochemicals for about 80% of the rest of our goods, wouldn’t we? Am I overstating that figure?
The thing that makes me want to bite off Pitt’s head and puke down his neck: He–and his oh-so-righteous buddies–either don’t KNOW this stuff, or they know and think we don’t. And either one disqualifies them from preaching to us. Suck it, Achilles.
Donuts on your lawn, StrawberryGirl
Beige – don’t forget that the largest solar power plant in the US only produces about 25 megawatts of power and takes about 180 acres. And those acres must be kept as manicured as a golf course which requires mowers that take gas. A coal plant takes up maybe 20 acres and produces 500 megawatts. So we either dirty the air or destroy ecosystems.
Not to mention the toxic waste created during the production of solar panels. US manufacturers are required to neutralize/dispose of it properly, but in countries like China, there either aren’t laws about it or the laws are ignored, and the waste is trucked out of the factories and dumped in the nearest clear space/fields. If nearby villagers protest, too bad. The Washington Post did a story about solar panel production maybe a year ago, it was damning. If the panels aren’t made in the US or Europe, chances are some villages’ fields were contaminated during the production. The small amount of clean energy produced isn’t going to make up for that.
Wind energy isn’t going to become common for quite some time. Put windmills on mountaintops? Better not be on a migratory bird flight path. That pretty much disqualifies the Appalachian chain. That argument alone should tie up the courts for a decade or so. Offshore? No one living on the coast wants to see them, plus there’s probably some groups out there who will argue that the windmills will be detrimental to the oceanic flora and fauna.
No form of energy is without controversy or downsides. I’m not saying it isn’t a good idea to seek new ways of producing energy (or improve current ways/distribution), but people need to realize that there isn’t a silver bullet that will provide unlimited, non-polluting energy without any input.
I think “suck it, Achilles” should be Deceiver’s new tagline.
Beige for the win!
Trust me: China could give a sh!t about the environment. Their attitude (when I was there to see it, anyway) was “Kill all you want, we’ll make more. See? While I said that, we just made 1900 babies. HAH!”
