In his first interview since son Jett’s tragic death last January, Scientologist John Travolta says he and his family are relying on almost daily religious counseling sessions to help them cope.
Since the 16-year-old boy died following a seizure, “We’ve been working very hard every day as a family to heal,” Travolta said during a round-table interview (per USA Today) with the cast of his latest film, Old Dogs (out Nov. 25), which also stars wife Kelly Preston and daughter, Ella, 9. “We have our own way of doing it, and it has been helping…”
Travolta and Preston declined to comment on an extortion case involving a former Bahamian senator and a paramedic who are accused of demanding $25 million from the family with information about Jett’s death.
In his extortion trial testimony, Travolta admitted for the first time that his son Jett had autism. He is believed to have kept his son’s condition a secret because of the way Scientologists view illness.
So his son was autistic, but he didn’t tell anybody because it’s against his “religion.” The boy died of a seizure. Many autistic children have a seizure disorder, but it’s treatable.
Did the Travoltas seek medical treatment for Jett’s autistic seizures, as forbidden by Scientology, which doesn’t even admit such a disorder exists? If not, is it too harsh to call their treatment of him “child abuse”? Are our hearts supposed to be warmed that they’re seeking comfort in the same cult that might have prevented them from protecting their son?
And do you think you or I would be getting the same kid-gloves treatment if this had happened to one of our kids?

I imagine they did everything they could for their child and were fully aware he was Autistic but kept it quiet so as not to publicly contradict Scientology’s teachings (as ridiculous as that may sound). As caught up in Scientology as Travolta is I just can’t imagine him neglecting his son’s needs to appease Xenu. Being I have an Autistic five year old son I have a lot of sympathy for them even though they chose to hide their son’s Autism diagnosis. I know that outraged a lot of parents with Autistic children but in the end it’s none of my business.
Well, I think the really offensive part is that he refused to take a stand regarding Scientology and its views on autism, mental health, and other disorders. I mean, it’s his SON. He saw with his own eyes that Scientology was off on autism, and instead of saying something about it, he hid it like it was shameful. I’m not even related to anyone with autism, and I’m offended by it.
Jett Travolta would probably have been classified as mentally retarded prior to the mid 1990’s, when the clinical definition of Autism was changed to encompass a much wider range of symptoms than it did up to the early 1980’s.
Is it hypocritical?
Probably technically so, but if your son was had an incurable malady/condition, I’d probably try witchdoctory if it also appeared to do no harm.

I’m not sure that Travolta wasn’t the best dad an Autistic kid could ever have, right up until the point where he turned down a medical recommendation that would probably have saved his life.
Was he ashamed of the kid or keeping his privacy tight? I don’t knwo enough about Travolta to make that call, but the kid wasn’t squirreled away in a hospital under a different name, or isolated from Travolta’s other kids.
Its a tragic tale any way its told, but I think Travolta might’ve been a good dad who made one horrible decision. Then again Jett may have died that day regardless of whatever treatment was offered him.
Homosexuality is also condemed by Scientology… John, you better keep that quiet too…
This is one of those times when I feel very grateful to not have been born into a Scientologist family. I have Asperger’s syndrome, a mild form of autism – how completely screwed up would I be if my family practiced a religion that denied any existence of my condition? It makes me sad that Scientology holds such detrimental, inaccurate, and possibly dangerous views about autism and other mental issues. My heart goes out to Jett Travolta.
Okay, I grew up thinking Christianity was an effed up type of religion (still somewhat do)…but at least autistic kids are not damned to hell or shunned or kept hush-hush.
Can we just destroy this religion for good? Their bad press is growing and growing this year, from Paul Haggis leaving to France calling finally calling it a cult.
I am not sure what I am deriving this from, but I seem to recall hearing that the Travoltas did work to get their son some treatment, but always kept it quiet. I could be wrong. Either way, it is sad that their son died. I would be interested to know how they reconcile their Scientological beliefs with their son’s condition, though it really isn’t my business and would just be nosy. As long as they don’t preach against psychiatry/psychology and medical treatment for people with problems, I don’t particularly care about them one way or the other.
I agree with Selah: I was diagnosed with clinical depression and if I was born into Scientology, I’m scared to think what would have happened to me. I feel so badly for all those Sci. depressed people being told there’s something wrong with them, or to ‘buck up’. What a horrible, horrible way to live.
Also, why isn’t this child abuse? If a MN judge can chase down a mother and son who refuse chemo for the boy on religious grounds (when he would’ve surely died without it), why does no one protest about Sci’s anti-meds obsession that can also lead to childhood deaths? How many other Sci kids are out there being deprived of medicine or treatments?
I don’t have it in me to hate Travolta for it, though. He’s suffered enough.
I can’t really muster up any feelings of hate for him either. I think I read once that Jett had been on a variety of medication and none of it worked very well for him, so they took him off of it. (It happens sometimes. My best friend in high school was epileptic, and the more medication they put him on, the more seizures he had.)
This is one of those stories where I really can’t be angry with the person involved. My thought,my hope, is that Travolta and Preston did treat Jett’s autism but on the ‘qt’ so as not to upset the scientology apple cart. I hope that some good comes of Jett’s tragic death … scientology will be exposed as a harmful cult/sham.
Here in wisconsin, there was a couple in central wisconsin that allowed their daughter to die, denying her life-saving treatment, because they were counting on divine intervention for healing. They are facing prison time, and rightly so. That should answer your exit question.
It’s easy to be angry at Johnny Boy. He publically supports the cult and there will be people drawn to this cult because of him and will suffer the many evils this cult forces upon thier members.
If Johhny Boy wanted to be a man, wanted to do the right thing, wanted to honor his son’s memory he would publically leave the cult and warn people about it. We know he is gay (or at the very least likes to go both ways) so whatever the cult is blackmailing him with isn’t going to hurt him much.
Catharine – the reason they aren’t being slapped with child abuse/neglect is because they’re celebrities. And beautiful people have no faults like us common non-celeb folk.
The whole thing just opens a huge can of worms. There have been a good number of cases in Canada and the States where parents have been charged with abuse because they didn’t seek medical attention for their children. These parents were Christian Scientists, Jahova’s Witnesses, Amish, Menonites, and other recognized religions that don’t recognize modern medicine as acceptable. In most of the cases, the parents were not found guilty of neglect and abuse because of religious freedom. I would think that the same would apply in this case.
That being said, I think that Travolta and all those Scientologists are idiots. As for the rest, I’m reminded of the parable of the man in the flood who refused help because God would save him.

It wasn’t one horrible decision.
Travolta & Preston placed the public image of a cult over the value of their own child.
They made that horrible decision consciously every single day of that child’s life.
Every time they ignored medical advice, every time they put Jett through another “cleansing”, every single time they denied his condition to themselves or the public they chose Scientology over responsible parenting.
And even if they sought treatment quietly, on the down-low, or through ultra private clinicians, they missed one hell of a chance to stand up and scream the truth: Scientology jeopardizes the health and well being of it’s adherents.
What a damn shame.
Well, the biggeest thing IMO about this tragic story, is that the kind of untreated (or Scilon treated) deaths that allegedly have happened to some of the common folk in the cult, has now happened to one of their elite. All the low-levelers’ deaths Scientology sweeps under the rug and claim didn’t happen. Kind of difficult to hide this one, it’s a biggie. But Jett’s death isn’t more tragic than the others, as usual the news media (not Deceiver of course) only cares about this one since it involves a star.
The best thing that can happen in this situation is that Scientology is investigated for continually practicing medicine on it’s members without a license, and fined, shutdown, the works. Maybe this is the big spotlight that is needed to save future members from being mis-diagnosed and harmed. One can only hope.

I personally have mixed feelings about medical decisions based on religion, but it seems to me what we have here is a situation where the parent(s) knew/knows the doctrine was wrong and went along with the church anyways. I can’t see how a person can know that their church’s false teachings contributed to the death of their son and yet they still are active members. I would respect them more if they were still oblivious to the fact their child had a disease there church claims doesn’t exist, but to admit the church is wrong but still associate with it boggles my mind. Don’t get me wrong, I think they loved their son, and I am sure they are in pain and guilt, but how brainwashed do you have to be to know your cult is wrong, likely killed your son, and still support the cult?

Judgemental group for not even trying to get their facts straight. Jett was on a Depokate and had been taking it for years. It had supposedly stopped being effective (not uncommon). So their son was not being neglected. Was it hypocritical for them to associate with a “church” that does not believe in their sons condition? Most definitely! But unlike other fundementalist they actually saught treatment for their child.

Exactly. I guess their views outweigh the fact that they basically consider Travolta and his son’s doctors to be liars since there is no such thing as autism. How can you be comfortable in a religion that basically denies you the right to exist as you are and makes you feel ashamed for something you cannot control? I guess they assume he was faking it or making it up for some reason? Remember, L. Ron Hubbard was a sci fi writer and a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic. During his time, treatments were horrific so he let his mental illness take control and denied it existed and that psychiatry was a total sham. That’s when and why he founded Scientology and explains it’s crazy space aliens and lack of compassion.

By saying nothing, they are accepting and approving of Scientology’s views. So, while they have an autistic son they are trying to care for (and I believe they did so secretly, so why isn’t Scientology punishing them for it?), their religion is out calling anyone with mental illness a liar. By default, the Travolta’s approve of the message Scientology is delivering and makes it appear that they were ashamed of their son and his condition. I can’t hate them because of this tragedy and I don’t think anything could have been done to save him, so I don’t know why others are acting as if he didn’t try to help. Amen BB. I find it fascinating that the Travoltas were ‘allowed’ to use non-Sci. meds on their son, to treat a condition that Sci. doesn’t believe exists. (I wish we could hear the back story behind this huge decision!) How were they able to do that- is it because they’re famous and it’s ok for them to flaut Sci. authority and teachings? Why do they still follow Scientology if they beleive in using conventional treatments for autism? All I can think now is, if I was a non-famous member I would be f-ing furious the Travoltas were allowed to use conventional medicine while my own kids were forced to suffer and die in the name of L Ron.
But D, you say that as if living with Autism was something as simple as slipping Jett a couple of pills every morning with his Lucky Charms. And the public attitude of the family has consistently been: The meds didn’t work, c’est la vie. But hey, have you tried Muddyfield Organic Yogurt?
My neighbor has a 6 year old who was finally diagnosed this past summer with a mild form of Autism. This monster of a disorder has dominated their family life since the child turned two. He’s been through a complete battery of tests twice over. Genetic tests, MRI’s, psychological, and more home & school visits than you can count.
And that’s just the start. With as mild as his particular syndrome is, he has a full squadron of therapists following him around. Speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy… plus an emotional tutor to teach him to recognise emotion in others and how to properly respond. That’s OUTSIDE of school. In school, there’s a staff of a dozen who either work with him or follow his case, including from a para-pro who goes through the entire school day by his side.
And all Jett had was pills and a nanny?
I find it hard to believe that the Travolta family treated this child to the full spectrum of existing medical knowledge and yet kept it all under wraps from the press and church elders for what, 16 years? They’re each shooting 2 movies a year, he’s flying jumbo jets to the Oprah Show, she’s guest starring on every sappy NBC drama ever produced, and they’re both promoting Zenuosity left and right when average parents of autistic children are having trouble squeezing a hot shower in between therapy appointments.
But never mind that. Even if they silently treated their child to the best of standards of medicine, think of the wasted opportunity.
I’m not a big proponent of awareness advocacy, because frankly, you can Walk For The Cure until your feet fall off and that’s not gonna help the lab guy down in the windowless basement of Pfizer develop a damn thing. But seriously, think of the good Travolta could have done for the world if he’d come out and said “My kid has Autism and this is how you recognize the signs in your own toddler…”
Now think of the good he could have done if he’d come out and said “My kid has Autism and the Church of Scientology is full of crap.”
Minnow – I am not saying he isn’t a hypocrite but people on here are accusing him of not caring for his child or not getting him medical attention. That is not true.
When it comes to children with disabilities (retarded, special needs…whatever), I could give a damn what other people do. My youngest daughter has a condition that has taken me over 10 years to find a diagnosis for…10 years of freaking tests and . I have rolodex with over 250 doctors and I stopped updating 4 years ago. I have been to the BEST medical facilities in the US and every doctor has gotten it wrong. The person who discovered what condition my daughter has was not a docter but my new wife (that was a holy crap moment). So you can stand there and say I “know” so and so who does this or someone else does that but until it is your child and you life with it every day, shut up! You don’t “know”, you can’t “know” the anguish, the desperation, the dashed false hopes. Hell I wish my daughter had autism, that would be a blessing. But those of us with children special needs live with the knowledge that the odds are we will out live our children due to accident or illness, one day we will stand crying over the grave of our child and second guess our entire lives.
Sorry about the rant but a bit of a sore subject. People are always telling me how I should do this or that or what other people have done. As if I am to lazy or ignorant to go the extra mile for my kid. So Travolta gets a soft spot in my cold heart, is he a little crazy? Sure, but aren’t we all.
And if Travolta was that embarrased about his child he could have easily put him in a home. Hell, every other week someone wants to talk to me about it. And you know Minnow, he may not have wanted a whole army of people running around. You do not need 20 specialists if you have one good one.
Actually, Preston has done numerous seminars, protests, TV shows, etc., warning about the evils of psychiatry, medications, and all that in the past few years. So she has preached against psychiatry/psychology and medical treatments in favor of the Scientology methods for a while there, back when Scientology really made that first push with their celebs going out to get their anti-psychiatry/medication word around.

As someone with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder, I understand the frustration of people sticking their noses into your treatment choices – if one more person tells me to try St. John’s Wort or melatonin or meditation or just take “control” of the situation, said individual is likely to be high-fived in the face with my fist.
I still think the Travoltas handled their son’s autism poorly for an entire host of reasons, and I don’t think they deserve much defending here.

I feel for you, and that’s why I have a hard time judging John Travolta too harshly. My sister has some ridiculous health problems that have been getting misdiagnosed and mistreated for years. I don’t even know what the heck she has. The doctors said she had migraines and some learning disability and we should do abc to treat that. Then they said she had asthma and something else and had to be on medication xyz. Then some new doctor said the old doctors were idiots and she needed heart surgery. My mom and I know the frustration of having random outsiders tell you, oh, well just do this to treat it; problem solved. (As if my mother hadn’t taken my sis to a million and one doctors and followed all of their advice. I keep expecting her to just blow up one of these days when someone gives her more silly advice. “Oh, take her to a doctor? Gee, never thought of that one! I’ve just been hoping she’d get better on her own!”)
I believe Scientology’s position on psychiatry is wrong. I believe Jett probably should have been working with a psychologist to better function with autism. Still, as I say that, I can’t help but feel like one of the idiots that told my mother she just needed to go to Dr. Bob and everything would be fixed, because truth be told, I don’t know the Travoltas. I don’t know why their son was treated in that way or even whether he was actually getting more treatment than we know about. Maybe there was more to it than the xinu thing.
