A British columnist has been forced to publicly apologize to Mariah Carey for calling her a diva. As if!
GMTV’s Kate Garraway has been given a dressing down by bosses after claiming Mariah Carey ‘acted like a diva’ by having a huge entourage when she appeared on the show.
Kate upset the singer, who was promoting her new single in a pre-recorded chat with Lorraine Kelly, after writing in her New! column last week: ‘”I’ve heard a lot of rumours about her being a diva over the years and guess what? It’s all true!
“While Mariah was very nice, the amount of people she had in her entourage was hilarious.
“They outnumbered the entire GMTV crew!”
Now Kate has been forced to issue a grovelling apology in this week’s column.
She writes: ‘I am really sorry about the furore I caused last week after I wrote in this column about Mariah Carey’s appearance on GMTV.
‘Especially because I am told it has upset the star herself, which is the last thing I intended.
‘You will remember I said how nice Mariah was. Everyone at GMTV loved having her on and her performance, typically, blew us all away. But it was wrong for me to add some jokes and gossip about her being a diva.
‘Her management have now told me that I got hold of the wrong end of the stick completely and I am still reeling from the massive ticking off my bosses gave me for fuelling the rumours that Mariah is unreasonably demanding.’
Where did anyone get the idea Mariah Carey was a diva? It couldn’t have been from her new ad for AT&T, in which she sends an assistant all over New York to pick up the imported orchids, luxury beauty products, and designer doggie beds she requires for an overnight hotel stay.
Look, everyone knows Mariah Carey is a diva. Mariah herself clearly knows if she signed on to that ad concept. But pressuring a journalist to apologize for reporting the truth? That’s not a diva move, that’s just a power trip.

Erm…wasn’t she one of the “Divas” (as in, Aretha, Celine, et al) who did the concert(s) on TV? THAT might be where someone gets at least a smidgen of a hint that she is, in fact, a diva. Well, that and the AT&T adverts. And her behavior.
GMTV wasn’t the only UK chat show having to put up with her antics. The only difference here is that the word ‘diva’ was never used by the host.

I have to think that the apology was designed more as a way to defend the assertion – there are plenty of details in the apology that simply offer more support for the conclusion that MC is a diva. But, really, who could blame the writer (besides MC)?
Not only is she a diva, but she is also a has been. Never liked her music and never will.
Now that is one of the best non-apologies I’ve ever read.
“She writes: ‘I am really sorry about the furore I caused last week after I wrote in this column about Mariah Carey’s appearance on GMTV.”
Not apologizing for the statement, but for the result.
“‘Especially because I am told it has upset the star herself, which is the last thing I intended.”
Still not an apology for her behavior. This is a classic “I’m sorry you feel that way” non-apoligy
“‘You will remember I said how nice Mariah was. Everyone at GMTV loved having her on and her performance, typically, blew us all away. But it was wrong for me to add some jokes and gossip about her being a diva.”
Not actually calling Mariah nice here – just reminding us that once upon a time she did say Mariah was nice. Some nice copy about the perfomance and then the only thing resembling an apology here.
“‘Her management have now told me that I got hold of the wrong end of the stick completely and I am still reeling from the massive ticking off my bosses gave me for fuelling the rumours that Mariah is unreasonably demanding.’”
And the next classic non-apology the “I’m sorry I got in trouble and people are being weenies about it”
Don’t get me wrong btw, there are times when a non-apoligy is perfectly apropriate. This is one of those times
Psh. That’s not an entourage. I’ve seen the pictures. You don’t really expect her to carry all those Ho-Hos, and Skittles by herself do you? Of course not.
@Elle – reminds me of an argument I had once with the ex.
She apologized the next day for “yelling” – NOT for what she said. And she said “you know what I mean” and “that’s the way I apologize”.
Which is one reason why she’s now the ex.
Nah, but most of us hire one lackey to carry the snack bag.
Not one assistant per skittle.
@myself
Geez, I spelled apology about five different ways up there. I hereby apologize for bringing down the IQ of the internet.
@Elle – Your presence here raises it up.
Remember? Al Gore invented the internet. So it started way down there to begin with.
One word: GLITTER.
Possibly one of the few people who makes Kate Gosslin look like she isn’t a diva.
I’m not really a Mariah Carey fan. But I’ve never had the impression that she’s a diva. She seems like a very nice person. Her image is a clean one…..

I just spit water all over my monitor! She is a major diva. Just listening to her talk about herself makes me want to vomit. Didn’t her husband say that of course she listens to her music because she is the one singing.
I’d start a boycott of Mariah but I don’t think anyone cares about her anymore.
