Anti-Gun Politician Pulls a Dirty (Tom, Dick, and) Harry?

Stay with me, folks. This one is good.

Last Thursday, North Carolina State Senator R.C. Soles was indicted on charges of assault with a deadly weapon for the August shooting of 22-year-old Kyle Blackburn, a law client of the senator, outside Soles’s home in Tabor City. According to the Wilmington (NC) Star-News:

SolesA Columbus County grand jury indicted Soles on Thursday on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. The charge carries a possible sentence of 15 to 31 months in prison.

Police say Soles shot Kyle Blackburn, 22, in the leg Aug. 23 at the senator’s Tabor City home. Soles has said he was acting in self-defense after Blackburn and another man tried to kick in the door of his home.

So what’s the big deal? The legislator appears to have acted in self defense. And don’t Americans have the much-ballyhooed right to bear arms, and a right to use them to defend ourselves and our homes from violent intruders? Well, apparently only some of us do.

Soles, a top-ranking Democrat and the longest-serving member of the legislature, is a well known gun-control advocate with a weak one-star “Firearms Friendly” rating from Grassroots NC. (And, in the interest of full-disclosure, an “A” rating from the NRA. But who are we to trust on this? The citizens of state where Soles has been Senator for 32 years? Or the gun lobby with a history of giving out “A” grades like candy at Halloween?)

But wait, it gets better.

Not only does Soles have a schizophrenic relationship with firearms, but he may also be — wait for it — a child molester.

Aren’t you glad you stayed with me?

Again, the Star-News reports:

For years, residents say, state Sen. R.C. Soles’ questionable relationships with young men in Tabor City were an open secret in the small Columbus County town.

That changed in August when his private life became public to all.

Residents of Tabor City have reported seeing Soles driving around town with a motorcade of young men trailing him. Some say they have seen him handing out money. Others have seen public arguments unfold.

Soles has admitted giving cash to these young men, which he says is an act of kindness for those in need.

But the senator’s self-proclaimed generosity backfired when one of the young men, Stacey Scott, told a local TV station Soles tried to molest him when he was 15. He later recanted the allegation on another TV station, but an State Bureau of Investigation probe had already begun.

Scott’s accusation was just the beginning of what became a barrage of public exposure revealing thousands of dollars paid by Soles to the young men and disturbances at his home.

One man, Allen Strickland, 18, is awaiting trial on charges that he burned down his home that was paid for at least in part by Soles.

A few weeks after the SBI started looking into Scott’s allegation, police say Soles shot 22-year-old Kyle Blackburn, one of Soles’ law clients, on his property.

Another man, B.J. Wright, was with Blackburn at the time of the shooting. Soles has admitted to giving money to Wright, another law client, while Wright was in prison.

So is the whole anti-gun, gun-toting Senator thing just a smokescreen? In this case, a little surface hypocrisy might be pointing to a much deeper level of depravity.

George Carlin once quipped that a state legislator is someone whose deepest, darkest secret has kept him from seeking higher office. We miss you, George.

There you go! Now that is a big ole pile of hypocracy. :) While I support someone’s right to defend themselves, if they are a big speaker of no guns, then let’s hope they practice what they preach. In the democrats lives, that is hard to do

What a creep. Yuck. And. Eeew. Nice one SJS.

Lesson number one? Don’t give money to a young male “friend” named BJ.

  4. 4 AllyKat Jan 16th, 2010 at 1:39 am

Yuck. This is one of those cases where you almost don’t WANT to dig deeper. If this is what’s been unearthed so far, I hate to think what may still be unknown.

How do people like this get elected? Scaaaary.

I’m surprised at you, North Carolina.

Why is he making it rain on them ho-I mean, his teenage male clients? I mean, attorney jokes aside, anything beyond posting bail is seriously questionable to me.

Don’t most people get paid by their “law clients” not the other way around?

  7. 7 Beige Jan 16th, 2010 at 11:06 am

I don’t care whether the guy has a D or an R after his name. This is textbook skank, and I’m referring both to the molester angle AND the gun thing.

I have to give SJS props for this post. This guy is a creepy pedophile and gun-control hypocrite. (Many gun grabbers are hypocrites — remember Carl Rowen?) Also, the fact that the NRA gave this clown an “A” rating is dismaying. And hypocritical.

SJS, thank you for the great post. The link about the NRA “A” grades was fantastic.

the dude may be creepy, but he’s not a pedophile. a pedophile is somebody who is sexually attracted to pre-pubescent children. i imagine that the fifteen to eighteen year olds have already been through puberty and have hair in their naughty places, unless they shave it.

Holy steaming crap. Just when I thought I can’t be shocked at the bad things politicians do, along comes this guy. Damn, Sarah you were right, this IS good.

Looks like we’ve got ourselves Mark Foley 2.0, folks.

Good one, Ms. Snarker. You are partially making up for your Palin hypocrisy hallucinations.

  15. 15 Bunny Jan 18th, 2010 at 9:53 am

WOW. This is some grade-A skank. That’s guy’s so two-faced, he should be a Batman villain! (I DON’T Believe in R. C. Soles.)

Also, am I the only one who feels really sympathetic that the allegator’s name is Stacey? As if this media circus isn’t bad enough, you know he must have gotten some wicked teasing growing up.

Nice find, Miss Snarker! Keep up the good hunt!

  16. 16 Fortunate_Son Jan 18th, 2010 at 11:27 am

Sounds like he’s a closeted gay and they’ve been blackmailing him.

Not uncommon for grown up male victims of gay statuatory rape to blackmail the sexual predators that assaulted them years ago.

In fact, there was an entire Intervention episode on it.

Its kind of a secret, fyi, that US citizens without permits are allowed to openly carry handguns in most places as long as they are unloaded.

Pretty good hypocrisy there Snarker, for a neophyte! Pretty good.

  18. 18 Beige Jan 18th, 2010 at 12:42 pm

What’s the point of carrying an UNloaded gun?

  19. 19 Blocked Jan 18th, 2010 at 1:10 pm

See attractive, multi-cultural spokesmodel for reference, Beige:

Right hip, unloaded gun. Left hip, ammunition clip.

  20. 20 Fortunate_Son Jan 18th, 2010 at 1:12 pm

^ That should be me above ftr. Its a problem on my side, not the D side.^

  21. 21 AllyKat Jan 18th, 2010 at 6:31 pm

I could be wrong, but I believe in Virginia you can carry a loaded gun in public as long as it is visible from 3 sides. I’m too lazy to look it up, but I’m sure the NRA site has the exact laws for all states.

  22. 22 JC Jan 27th, 2010 at 3:13 pm

armywife – gun control does not mean ban on control nor does it mean that one who advocates gun control cannot own a gun. It’s too simplistic to boil it down to an all or none which is what the NRA is trying to make it into. I’m both an advocate of gun control and a life time member of the NRA.
