From Joe Biden’s official media schedule for January 14, 2010:
At 1:00 PM, the Vice President will meet with Iraqi Vice President Adil Abd al-Mahdi in the Roosevelt Room. There will be a pool spray at the bottom of this meeting; gather time is 1:45 PM in the Brady Briefing Room.
Then, at 2:15 PM, the Vice President will meet with Earl Devaney, chairman of the Recovery Act Transparency and Accountability Board. This meeting is closed press.
A secretive, closed-door meeting on transparency and accountability?
Please tell me I overslept a little and it’s April 1 already.
Please?
Okay. Here’s the Los Angeles Times “Top of the Ticket” blog on this, er, contradiction:
[T]oday’s Biden schedule highlight is a meeting with the chief of transparency for economic recovery. But, unfortunately, the transparency meeting is non-transparent, closed to the press. Which makes it — what? — secret openness? Open secrecy?
To which one blog commenter responded — and this has got to be the Quote of the Week — “I want my income to be this transparent to the IRS.”

This is one of those posts that makes me blink at my computer. A LOT. So bizarre, you can’t even parody it.
Well, they have to decide on what actually can be considered “transparent” and “accountable”.
You must remember – Washington was where the definition of “is” was debated.
They don’t really want you to know what really goes on with the government. They’re never really transparent. As this post clearly demonstrates.
Oh Great Oversneer – you have started my weekend off on a good note – Thank you for the compliment on my comment to the LA TIMES! Matt
I think the references to “transparency” and “openness” in the O administration are akin to mentions of poverty or war or illiteracy. In other words, they’re foursquare against ALL of those.
Obama spouted off that he will have the most transparent administration EVER 8 times and then refuses to allow C-SPAN in on the debates on health care. Now Biden is joining in. Am I really surprised? NO
Remember, this is the group that told us they were better and more honest than the last administration. No more back door politics and buying of votes.
They represent the best and best intentions of the people, so they’re making decisions the proletariat can’t and shouldn’t make. People not in the know just don’t know, so this is best for all. Let’s let our betters do what they have to do.
See, Emerson, you’re saying that sarcastically (at least, I HOPE so), but apparently, the Obama administration really believes that.
I hope Emerson you are being sarcastic and not just another hopenchange myrmidon.
Same old fricking crap out of DC. Did anyone really expect the Presbo and Joe show to be any different?
I stopped reading at proletariat.
Of course I’m being sarcastic. What do you think this is, the Democratic Underground discussion board? I visit there whenever I want my head to explode from all the crazy hippy nihilism.
War is peace, ignorance is strength, proles and animals are free, secrecy is transparency….
Maybe we should get that sarcmark. No more italics, no more quotation marks, no wondering if someone is being sarcastic. Keep your head on your shoulders Emerson.
BTW – love the picture of Biden.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
I can’t *believe* this won’t be parodied in Dilbert. Dumb businesspeople and government types do this sort of thing all the time. It’s like saying “we have to leverage our synergies” in a meeting, or say that tax revenue is in “a negative cashflow situation”: the object is not to get anything done, but to see who cracks up first. Last one to keep a straight face wins.
“…People not in the know just don’t know, so this is best for all. Let’s let our betters do what they have to do.” …Sadly this is the way bureaucrats in DC and both political parties think. Us plebs are too ignorant to understand what it takes to run this country so just fork over your paychecks and shut up!
I’d be willing to guess at least half of the (supposed) 65 million people who voted for him did believe he would truly be different, Jenn… and half of those will ignore posts like this. It would be funny if it weren’t dangerous.
