Amanda is Holden on to her standards. Not.

I can’t decide where to begin. There’s just so much that’s messed up about this.

Amanda Holden, celebrity, actress, “Britain’s Got Talent” judge, has a few things to sort out.

From the London Times:

“I hate the gym,” she says. “And I can’t stay still long enough to do yoga: I’m too busy-busy. And I’m vegetarian, but I love my food. Tonight I’m going to 10 Downing Street for my dinner with Simon [Cowell] and Piers [Morgan] because Simon didn’t want to go on his own.” Her guilty pleasures, she says, are “butter and wine. I don’t believe in having low-fat spread in the fridge, and I do indulge in a pudding, and I do like a bit of Stilton when I’m having posh dinners out”. At weekends she and Hughes head for their Norfolk cottage and go for a “massive walk on Holkham beach, lunch at the Hoste Arms in Burnham Market with red wine and a roast, the meat wrapped up and given to the dogs, and then watch a movie”.

So she’s a vegetarian who orders meat and feeds it to her dogs? I’d be pissed if I were that cow.  But wait, unborn chicken is on the menu too?

According to the Daily Mail:

“Writing on her page yesterday lunchtime, Holden said: ‘Having scrambled eggs waiting for make-up girl to come and transform me into a judge for 1st day BGT Glasgow!”

Then duck and crab are apparently on the menu as well.  She appeared in 2008 with celeb chef Gordon Ramsey to cook angel hair pasta with crab and then a “succulent main of duck breast,” according to the promo.

The Daily Mail continues:

Holden revealed her strict fitness regime to stay in shape at the weekend. She told The Observer Magazine: ‘I like a glass of wine, but I don’t smoke. I run regularly and being a vegetarian, I’m probably healthy by default.

Holden claims to be careful about what she puts in her body (clearly not her dogs’ bodies…), but she wants to “look like Joan Rivers.” From Digital Spy:

Amanda Holden has said that she is happy to admit that she has used Botox to remove her wrinkles and will continue to do so in the future. [...] Holden said: “I have had Botox, which I’m happy to admit. It’s running out now, though – I need to go again. I agree with Simon Cowell. It’s like cleaning your teeth – maintenance. “It’s like getting your roots done. I think as long as you don’t go stupidly over the top. I can move my face.”

She added: “You can still see I’ve got some Botox in my forehead but the rest has virtually worn off. Yes, I think it’s character and everything else, but f**k it! That’s why I need to get it done again.” Holden also said that she wants to look like Joan Rivers and sees “no point in growing old gracefully”.

Ms. Holden, your positive message for young women is overwhelming–as is your commitment to vegetarianism.  However will I follow your example? You have set the bar so high! You are “healthy by default,” and you pump your face full of poison…and you want to look like Joan Rivers? (Ok, Audrey, get a hold of yourself.  You’ve mentioned that 3 times.)  Wait, are you wearing leather?

who? All I can say is that if she is a vegan, then how does she get to eat butter and pudding? Aren’t they made from milk, which comes from cows? She must have milked them before killing them for that dress she is wearing.

I don’t mind the parts where you genuinely nail people for being hypocritical vegetarians, but it’s not hypocritical to be a be a vegetarian who eats eggs – it would be hypocritical to proclaim yourself a VEGAN and then eat eggs. Similarly, since some vegetarians’ choice not to eat meat is based solely on health, and not on animal rights, it doesn’t *necessarily* make someone hypocritical to be vegetarian and wear leather.

Sometimes I really enjoy this site, but other times the analytical reasoning is so, so poor that it’s just frustrating.

Anon, for the most part I agree. BUT the second she decided to shill for PETA she left herself wide open.

  4. 4 Pastafarian Jan 25th, 2010 at 2:42 pm

Has peta seen some of these pictures?

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1245971/Amanda-Holden-left-mortified-faces-past-promoting-new-TV-show.html

I wonder where those feathers came from. An animal I guess.

I thought being a vegetarian and being Vegan were one and the same — never knew there was a difference… i.e., “Vegan” is just a cute name/buzzword. I’m not being snotty (or whatever) here either – I’m pretty much into details, so what is the real difference between proclaiming oneself a vegetarian -vs- a Vegan ?

  6. 6 Pastafarian Jan 25th, 2010 at 2:50 pm

A vegetarian doesn’t eat meat, or anything from animals, that means eggs too, A vegan doesn’t use ANYTHING from animals.

  7. 7 TheRose Jan 25th, 2010 at 2:51 pm

You do realize that a Vegetarian and a Vegan are not the same thing, right?

Milk, cheese, butter, eggs – Vegeterians can eat all of these things. Vegans do not, but I don’t see anywhere that states she’s a Vegan. Also, just because she doesn’t eat meat doesn’t mean she’s against others eating meat or even wearing leather/furs.

Second, is she really a hypocrite for grasping that her dogs are on the carnivore end of omnivorous? Dogs need meat to live. Period, full stop. Calling her a hypocrite for that is stretching far beyond you’re reach, Audrey.

Thirdly, the PeTA photo was taken in 2002. When was she photographed in the leather dress? Is she still a member? If so, then by all means, brand her the hypocrite she is. But if not ….

As for the botox, while I agree that injecting botulism into your face is really, really stupid, you never mentioned her claiming she thought herself to be a role model for young girls.

    Thanks for the clarification.

Who in their right mind wants to look like Joan Rivers ? I guess I just answered my own question.

  9. 9 gcb Jan 25th, 2010 at 3:03 pm

“being a vegetarian, I’m probably healthy by default”

Yeah, because vegetarians NEVER suffer from vitamin deficiencies… [/sarcasm]

  10. 10 CMS2004 Jan 25th, 2010 at 3:13 pm

Isn’t there a term like “lacto-ovo-vegetarian” or something to describe vegetarians who will eat dairy and eggs and gelatin and whatnot, but not actual meat or fish? That’s more like what this woman (whom I have NO CLUE about) is, I think.

But hey what do I know, I’m one of those nasty, evil, meat-eaters. I like my food to taste like it died screaming. :o )

  11. 11 Pastafarian Jan 25th, 2010 at 3:18 pm

peta thinks the use of any animal for any reason, zoos, seeing eye dogs, pets, anything is evil and has likened it to the holocaust. If someone wants to associate themselves with them I think they should be held to peta’s standards to the letter. That’s what they want to do to me right? Or at least want me to do.

    From dictionary.com

    Vegetarian

    –noun
    1. a person who does not eat or does not believe in eating meat, fish, fowl, or, in some cases, any food derived from animals, as eggs or cheese, but subsists on vegetables, fruits, nuts, grain, etc.

I guess it’s easy to be a vegetarian since their diet seems so flexible between eating animal products sometimes, and not at others.

  12. 12 Gamereg Jan 25th, 2010 at 3:22 pm

    TheRose:

What about the duck and crab? That’s a bit beyond just eggs and dairy. Furthermore, unless the first picture on the page is faked, or PETA used her image without her permission, she’s elected to be a PETA spokesperson, and PETA is against animal use of any kind whatsoever. Plus, PETA also advocates vegetarian pet food, so if Amanda really does support PETA, she wouldn’t feed her dogs meat (or even own dogs for that matter).

  13. 13 Hurricane Jan 25th, 2010 at 3:34 pm

Not hypocritical for a vegetarian to eat eggs, huh? Perhaps not for the “pro-choice” vegetarians. Anonymous, you have to give this post a break. It is very hard to pin down these people when the line in the sand keeps changing depending on the persons mood. I eat eggs but not chicken. Wait, no, I eat chicken but not beef. Oh, no fur, but yes on leather, wait, butter is fine from free-range-gucci-gloved-massaged-teats-only but not from normal dairies, and no fish unless it comes from cans and, and, and……

  14. 14 Elle Jan 25th, 2010 at 3:45 pm

If she’s a vegetarian for health reasons (though her grasp on that seems tenuous) then there’s nothing hypocritical about wearing leather or having the occasional cheat meal.

  15. 15 Catharine Jan 25th, 2010 at 3:56 pm

‘Healthy by default’? Lol I want to e-mail her that list Holly made about all the crappy stuff vegetarians and vegans can get and still be vegs. (you know, that one she compiled after PeTA’s whale billboard). Oh and no exercise? How the eff is that healthy by default?

  16. 16 Catharine Jan 25th, 2010 at 3:57 pm

And also, what the heck does vegetarian for health reasons mean??? Anyone know? Seriously, how is depriving yourself from protein and iron healthy? I’ve never heard that one before.

  17. 17 Elle Jan 25th, 2010 at 4:11 pm

“And also, what the heck does vegetarian for health reasons mean???” ~ Catherine

I’m a happy meat-eater, but my sister is a vegetarian for “health reasons.”** She cites low cholesterol, low saturated fats, high fiber, and plenty of antioxidants. She does take iron and B-complex supplements though. Since she’s not doing it for the poor widdle animals, she does occasionally eat meat for special occasions. She also wears leather shoes.

** Personally I don’t think vegetarianism is inherently healthy. But my sister thinks my cow-eating habit is unhealthy so we live and let live

  18. 18 California Dave Jan 25th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

Note that the PeTA pic is OLD – it says “go vegetarian for 2002“.

  19. 19 Hurricane Jan 25th, 2010 at 4:18 pm

Lettuce scream like baby seals when you make a salad. PETA should be ashamed of that photo.

  20. 20 The Oversneer Jan 25th, 2010 at 4:32 pm

    I’m a lacto-ovo-pesco-pollo-porco-carnitarian.

  21. 21 D--- Jan 25th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

It’s okay Hurricane, that is fake lettuce. It’s actually alligator skin

  22. 22 TheRose Jan 25th, 2010 at 5:39 pm

    Gamereg:

The article said she helped prepare the duck and crab, it never said anything about eating it. I know several vegetariants who have no problem handling or even cooking meat products. Surely they aren’t hypocrites too?

As for PeTA, I ask again, is she STILL associated with that organization? That photo is clearly dated 2002. If she is, then by all means, call her a hypocrite. But if she isn’t, then how about we let her off the hook here and look for real hypocrites.

  23. 23 Owitzia Jan 25th, 2010 at 6:08 pm

I don’t see hypocrisy here, just stupidity. It seems like she’s doing it as a health thing (though I don’t understand how depriving yourself lean meats is healthy).

  24. 24 Audrey Skepburn Jan 25th, 2010 at 6:47 pm

She is still associated with PETA. Much less sexy photo, though. Bear with me, I made a judgment call. http://www.mediaweek.co.uk/News/MostEmailed/977878/Go-Ahead-buses-bans-Peta-bear-fur-campaign/

  25. 25 JollyGreenMidget Jan 25th, 2010 at 7:01 pm

As for not eating meat for health reasons, here’s my own experience minus the gory details-meat, eggs, and dairy for the longest time just didn’t agree with me. I still loved wearing leather and fur, I have a delightful collection of vintage minks. Turns out I was developing gall stones and needed a gall bladder removal, now with digestive enzyme supplements I can eat poultry, dairy, and eggs again, but not red meat but I was never nuts about it anyway. But that’s why I was an ovo-lacto vegetarian for awhile and a vegan for even longer…a leather wearing vegan, but that was solely for medical reason, so I digress…anyway some people are just not capable of processing animal proteins. And given my own personal experiences, this is an area where I’m willing to cut some people just a LITTLE slack.
That doesn’t change the fact that PETA is an evil terrorist organization.

  26. 26 Pastafarian Jan 25th, 2010 at 7:25 pm

Twiggy? You people in the U.K. need some better celebrities. Losers.

  27. 27 Hurricane Jan 25th, 2010 at 7:29 pm

How is having gall stones tied with not being able to eat meat, eggs and dairy? While I am lactose intolerant, they few things that I could eat with no issues prior to my gall bladder removal was red meat, eggs and chicken (not fried). It was the oily and fatty junk that was bad for me but a good piece of meat was fine.

  28. 28 JollyGreenMidget Jan 25th, 2010 at 8:45 pm

Don’t know for sure, but I just kept getting terribly ill after eating anything like that. I just couldn’t process it.

  29. 29 Jenn Jan 25th, 2010 at 9:11 pm

Ho-hum. Another PETA poster child shown to be a hypocrite.

  30. 30 TheRose Jan 25th, 2010 at 11:09 pm

    Audrey:

She’s still with them? Cool, good to know. Then if PeTA has only one lever of devotion (which they seem to), then, yes, she’s a hypocrite. I agree.

It’s a pity these idiots make good vegetarians look stupid.

  31. 31 Sarah Jessica Snarker Jan 26th, 2010 at 10:25 am

I think Amanda must be getting her veggie-advice from Ted Danson. From a GQ interview:

I’d read somewhere that he was a vegan. “Oh yeah, no, I’m an actor. Which means one week I’m vegan, the next I don’t know.”

  32. 32 Beige Jan 26th, 2010 at 10:46 am

PETA is to real vegans what Westboro Baptist Church is to real Christians.

  33. 33 Ronin Jan 26th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

Forget the Vegan/vegetarian argument for her for a second. Here’s the hypocrisy: Raising a cow to feed her; bad. Raising a cow to feed her dogs: good. If it’s PETA is has to be a hypocrite.

  34. 34 All Women Stalker Jan 29th, 2010 at 12:50 am

What a huge bundle of hypocrisy. I was tsk tsking as I read through this entry. PETA people have really lost their marbles.
