Prez: One Job Lost is One Too Many (Unless You’re a Banker, or I Want To Take Over Your Industry)

Did everybody enjoy “Tax-Cut Barry” last night on the tele-tubes? I entertained myself by watching “Barack Borat” live blogging on Twitter. (He’s funny as hell, but the humor loses something in the translation from Kazakh.)

But if one thing is crystal clear from last night’s State of the Union (other than the fact that Harry Reid needs a nap and Justice Samuel Alito is president of the Joe Wilson fan club), it’s that the President and Congress do not like banks. Nosirree. Banks suck. The fact that he lent them $700 billion of our money does not mean he enjoyed it.

So it should come as no surprise that while President Obama has now turned his focus to jobs, he’s not too worried about making sure those evil money-changers avoid pink slips. Now that the healthcare bill has blown up like a well-trained underpants bomber, he’s pushing a “Race to the Top” education program funded (in large part) by a government takeover of another industry.

This time, companies that write student loans are the targets. And the result will be the loss of thousands of private sector jobs.

“But Jimmy,” you say, that can’t be! Read on:

So with unemployment above 10 percent, Obama has a new plan to get you back to work.  Unless your job is lending money to college kids. In which case you’re screwed.

Hey — did you hear the one about the banker who was arrested for embezzling $100,000 to pay for his daughter’s college education? The cop who booked him also had a kid in college, so he asks the banker, “Where were you going to get the money for her sophomore year?”

Yeah. College loans. Good times. Glad someone lent me the dough, though. Otherwise I’d be an under-educated, unemployed freelance journalist wasting my time on a silly blog. Or something.

If things don’t change soon, the end of his term won’t matter.

  2. 2 Amory Jan 28th, 2010 at 12:25 pm

What a douchebag. You know its a bad sign when he’s taking over so many industries, that one as big as student loans can just slip right under the radar.

I’m still stuck on Obama outing the SCOTUS on Primtime. He knows WE know he took donations from overseas right? Maybe these tactics worked in the 60’s, but this age of instant information and fact checking…does he really think he can hide his behavior, what he says, etc? Exapserating.

  4. 4 Bill Jan 28th, 2010 at 12:34 pm

I didn’t watch it, or listen to it, I can’t stand the sound of basically any politicians voice, regardless of political party.

Which leads me to my next point. I wish Morgan Freeman would run for something. I do enjoy the sound of his voice. To quote from Mr. Freeman on Family Guy “Ever since I was young boy, people have enjoyed listening to the sound of my voice…”

And let’s tell another 1 million students that when they graduate, they will be required to pay only 10 percent of their income on student loans, and all of their debt will be forgiven after 20 years — and forgiven after 10 years if they choose a career in public service, because in the United States of America, no one should go broke because they chose to go to college.

So … go to college at 18 (the first time you’re outside of your parent’s care legally), graduate at 22, take loans out to pay for it, by 42 you don’t have to repay the debt (32 if you work for the state or government), between that time you only have to pay up to 10% of your income, qualify for social security at 62, medicare at 65, so all in all you get 20 or 30 years where you’re not turning to the government to help you. Of course during those years, they’re busy taxing you to pay for everyone older and younger than you.

I’m sure all this won’t add to the deficit either.

he was on? Huh. Must have had to watch paint dry or something. However, I do love the picture of our wonderful Director of Homeland Security taking a nap during his long speech. How many times was “I” in it or “Blame Bush?” I lost count. For college kids, it was a good night for drinking games.

I read about the student loans last week. I have a stafford loan for my Masters degree. What else will he try to take over? Banks? Autos? loans? What is left?

  7. 7 D--- Jan 28th, 2010 at 1:14 pm

uhm..does this mean I can spend $500,000+ going for a PHD, go work for the government for 10 years in a clinic. Don’t know what clinic a doc gets paid but maybe $80k a year. So pay back maybe $80k total, government will forgive the $420k + interest and then I can jump into the private sector and make a killing?

    Dang, wish I was younger

I always love the people in favor of “free” education. Apart from all the logical flaws like the fact that you are paying for it whether or not you actually get the education, here’s my own problem with it:

One of my profs at Penn State was from Austria…where education is “free.” She was an English major. Austria doesn’t need many English majors. 88% of her class failed. She said that she was lucky, because the statistic is usually more like 92%.

If education is free, there’s more competition. Just remember, somebody’s gotta work at the McDonalds.

From the great Jay Nordlinger at NR:

“And let’s tell another one million students that when they graduate, they will be required to pay only ten percent of their income on student loans, and all of their debt will be forgiven after twenty years — and forgiven after ten years if they choose a career in public service.”

Because “public service” is better than the private sector? Nobler, more laudable? Can I tell you what a public service is? Opening a good store. Inventing something useful. Employing people.

    Me: amen

I know one job I’d like to see someone lose, but it’d just go to Joe Biden. So never mind.

Cliff’s Notes on the SOTU speech: “I hear you, loud and clear: Y’all don’t like being bent over a table and @#$%ed ’til you’re blue. I hear you. Now hear this: WHAT’S MY NAME? WHAT’S MY NAME?”

I can’t watch that self-worshiping jackass or listen to his speeches if I want to retain one iota of respect for (at least) the OFFICE of POTUS.

POTUS seems rather muddled and confused. I saw this comment elsewhere (not sure who said it ) but summed it up for me… “he’s a turtle on a post: you aren’t sure how he got there, and he’s not sure what he’ll do about it.”

You mean like how the online donation software used by Obama’s campaign was programmed in such a way that the only plausible explanation was so he could accept overseas donations? You mean like that?

  20. 20 LN Jan 28th, 2010 at 5:24 pm

    Beige,

Loved your cliff notes version. Don’t forget when he was referring to the economy he could easily have said “bring out the gimp.”

The Blind leading the Blind was my impression of his speech. PEBO is so cloistred and protected that he actually believes the tripe he has written for him to read.

  22. 22 watchdog Jan 28th, 2010 at 10:02 pm

Sallie Mae CEO Albert Lord made $4,660,929.00 last year, his companies profits fell 95%, but he still made $4,660,929.00. Need I say more.

I didn’t watch it, but every fact checking article I’ve read makes me want to bang my head against the wall. You REALLY lie, Mr. President! Alito shaking his head at Obama’s stupid attacks was rather restrained, in my opinion. My absolute favorite review of the evening? I’ll give you a hint: his leg tingles when he listens to Obama. I like how Chris Matthews “forgot” Obama is black, and didn’t feel the “usual” racial tension.

Funny, I never CARED that Obama was black. I’m not blind, so I’m not going to forget that he is black, anymore than I’d forget Biden is white. Either way, I don’t care, because my opinion of each is based on their character and actions. I walk around a multi-racial/multi-cultural campus four days a week, and the only thing I really notice is if someone is wearing something cute or if they are pretty or if they are acting weird and so on. I only feel tense if someone is yelling, threatening or rude, which I have only witnessed once. What is there to be tense about? We’re all people. I got my swine flu vaccine today, and the only reasons I thought about the nurse’s background are that she had an unusual name and an interesting accent.

Since middle-men and banks serving as a conduit for Federal student loan money is something that shouldn’t have happened in the first place, and the entire system is a ripoff for the taxpayer and a noose around the neck of the borrowers, the loss of those jobs isn’t a big deal. They shouldn’t exist. Go do something else.

  25. 25 Some dude from New York Jan 28th, 2010 at 11:29 pm

Wonderful little right-wing circle jerk you guys have going on here.

I’d contribute, but the last time I came here (sometime early last year or so), I posted a (profanity free, respectfully stated) refutation of an article by “Simon”- something or other that proved him wrong, and what a surprise… it was deleted somehow! So I reposed it. Amazingly, that post was ALSO deleted. Yet, by some miracle, additional posts stroking Simon’s ego were posted.

I understand your desire for an “echo chamber” when it comes to all this anti-Obama vitriol, but you should at least have a disclaimer that says, “welcome to the Deceiver… where we can’t stand hypocrites… aside from ourselves.”

“he’s a turtle on a post: you aren’t sure how he got there, and he’s not sure what he’ll do about it.” ~Jenn

. . . . All you know for sure is he damn well didn’t get up there by himself.

At least that’s how my grandad would end that particular aphorism.

Some dude from New York – funny I don’t consider myself a right winger or a left winger just an American with an opinion that wants the federal government off my back and to stop spending my money.

I was laughing when Obama was offering tax cuts and then started talking about the out of control budget. Tax cuts without spending cuts to match just add to the debt or did they forget that…

vol1805- another wonderful contribution to the echo chamber. Well done!

D— Way to ignore reality. There was recently a vote for “pay as you go,” essentially stipulating that all spending increases will be offset by either cuts elsewhere or tax increases. When it came to a vote, not a ONE member of the “party of fiscal responsibility” voted for it. Not. One.

Beige- if you’re going to cite a “fact check,” at least cite a site with some credibility. FOX news doesn’t have any. Here’s another:

Maybe not with the White House, but they’re hardly an unbiased source themselves. Although I am pleased to see that you’re willing to take time out from blowing Keith Olbermann to “contribute”.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/OPINION/01/29/erickson.obama.math/ Not Fox News, so there you go.

  32. 32 Beige Jan 30th, 2010 at 11:33 pm

Oh–and even the fact-checks you cite don’t exactly look good for Obama, even compared to the other guys. I guess 50 pounds of BS in a five-pound bag just don’t look trim, no matter WHICH way you run the stripes.

  33. 33 Beige Jan 30th, 2010 at 11:40 pm

And another thing: You obviously missed the “AP” byline at the beginning of the story; it didn’t originate with Fox.
