Written by Pete Townshend in 1965 at the age of 20:
People try to put us d-down (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
Just because we g-g-get around (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)

Talkin’ ’bout you’re geriatric.

You think he’s heard about that whole thing with Noah Cyrus? Because, well, you know…
I was wondering why they didn’t let fans on the field, but then I remembered that right, he’s a sex offender. Don’t want to take the risk that little girls might be out there.
Not a fan of The Who but at least they don’t like hippies either.
My kids had no clue who they were and wondered whose brilliant idea it was to have them on.
Whoa. Here I go, off to Google Pete Townshend’s SO status, because I thought he had gotten in trouble for little-boy-interference, not little-girl-diddling.
Dude’s a SO?! I live in a cave…
Hmm. All I could find were references to viewing child pr0n online, which while ooky and utterly wrong, wasn’t gender-specific. You learn something new every day, I guess.
I didn’t realize The Who played until this morning. Like I said I watched the Puppy Bowl. If I’d wanted to watch muscular guys in their 20’s fighting over balls I’d drive to Bucktown.
They didn’t actually play this song, though, right? So he’s a hypocrite just for… aging?
Yep.
Most people under 50 probably only know of the Who/Pete Townshend as the band/singer that do/does the CSI themes. And then only if they watch the credits. So, I guess pretty much no one under 50 knows who they are.
I loved the Puppy Bowl! It was awesome! As for THe Who, someone commented last night at our party that because of the mishap with JT and Janet, they now can only ask old, wrinkly guys to perform so nobody is offended. I was offended by the old wrinkly guys they have had perform these last few years.
Pete is not a sex offender. He was molested as a child. He looked at a child porn website to see if it was for real as he is anti child porn. The Brits don’t have the same privacy laws as here. They saw his credit card number and busted him. They took his computer and as far as I know found no child porn on it. Pete is a good guy.
My 12 year old and husband had an Abbot and Costello moment.
“Pete is not a sex offender. He was molested as a child. He looked at a child porn website to see if it was for real as he is anti child porn. The Brits don’t have the same privacy laws as here. They saw his credit card number and busted him.”
So if my credit card number turned up on a child porn website they wouldn’t bust me because I’m a good guy?
Did anyone notice the commercial about the “Eco-Cops” arresting everyone except the hybrid owners? It’s funny how they made fun of their own smug and didn’t even realize it.
Not a big Who fan but I was getting tired of all the acts that would lip sync. Not sure how much the Who did but it looked authentic enough
Pete wrote a treatise in 2002 on child porn after a friend of his committed suicide due in part to her being molested as a child. It was essentially written to demonstrate how much child porn there is on the internet and how easy it is to access.
He was cleared of all charges by London police, but not apparently by the public.
Minnow, that made me laugh.
Rob, I thought the same thing. At first I thought the ad was going to be about how dumb the “green” movement is. Sadly, same old drivel, with an extreme lack of self awareness.
Anyone else rolling their eyes at how blown out of proportion the “controversial” Tebow ad turned out to be? It reminded me of the Campbell’s Chunky soup ads with the pro ball moms feeding the teams.
Are you sure that Pete’s six-page essay wasn’t just to cover up what he did? I read that “research” and am not convinced. I read it like it was a way to excuse his behavior. Either way, let’s say he IS innocent and truly was just trying to do “research”. What makes him think it’s a good idea to take the law into his own hands by tracking down child porn on the internet, like he’s some sort of anti-pedophilia crusader? That’s like me driving around town pulling people over and issuing citations. I’m not a cop, and neither is Pete. Looks guilty to me.
Allykat, my thoughts exactly. I remember watching, thinking, “well, this could be refreshing,” and being disappointed in the end. However, I did notice the enormous amount of irony.
Technicality, he was a registered sex offender for five years as part of a plea bargain when protected by the best lawyers money can buy.
So were Michael, LaToya, the Two Coreys and Joe Jackson. Its a cycle.
Not a big “pro” lobbying group out there, is there.
That’s right, they’re significantly more protecting of privacy.

You probably should do a little more research on the videos they found on Townshend’s laptop.
Pete is a good musician for a pederast.
I am probably the only one on this site that actually liked the half time show. I was a big Who fan growing up, but even in the 80s most of my peers didn’t know much about them. I thought they looked and sounded as good as can be expected. That said having them was one of the NFL’s few marketing missteps this season.
bet on someone much younger next year. At the rate she’s getting media coverage, Taylor Swift has probably already been signed for 2011.
Pete explanation of what happened re child porn was found to be true. In fact I recall the UK’s organization for helping stop this crime actually came out and apologized to Pete and agreed he was not acting inappropriately. You also have to remember that this happened years ago. Before we all became more savvy about what was on the internet.
PS – I thought they did an amazing job on the half-time show. I hope I’m as energetic when I’m in my mid-sixties. And, for anyone who doesn’t know who they are, they should learn. If nothing else than just to appreciate legendary rock.
You mean waaaaay back in 2003?
Yes, and that’s why he plead guilty and was a registered child sex offender for five years.
He didn’t plead not guilty, then his explanation would be untrue.
He plead guilty…as in “I, Pete Townsend, ama child sex offender”.
Guilty of going to the site is not the same as being a sex offender. Having to register as a result of this action is just the law. As for me, I can tell you that 7 years ago I believed a lot more stuff on the internet than I do now … like spam emails and giving up personal information. Just sayin’ …
And, before you say it, I do believe Pete is not a sex offender. You can call me naive, stupid, what ever.
this halftime presentation brought to you by dulcilax and depends.
