Christina Aguilera Changes Her Auto-Tune

Once upon a time, Christina Aguilera was the girl with the golden voice. The pop star with a voice so pure, so controlled, she could proudly step out in public sporting an anti-Auto-Tune tee, and receive nothing but cheers of admiration and support.

Those days are now officially over.

In an interview (below) with Sirius FM Satellite Radio, Aguilera admits to using the tool on several tracks from her new album, Bionic.

No, I don’t get annoyed with the Auto-Tune thing, but only if it’s used in a creative way.

. . . Like as a joke on a t-shirt? No, that doesn’t annoy me either.

Oh, you meant more like to “creatively” correct your pitch so you don’t have to work quite so hard at all those vocal gymnastics you’ve become so famous for over the years?

Sure, that makes sense.

So I guess this explains why Bionic is just flying off the record store shelves.

Number 1, it’s a joke shirt. You can wear a t-shirt as a joke and not believe what it says. They aren’t meant to be taken seriously, and she obviously wasn’t taking it seriously and thought it was funny. It’s a friggen t-shirt, you can’t honestly use that in your argument (which I’m guessing you are since it’s a weak argument to begin with.) My uncle has one of those bikini inspector shirts, that doesn’t mean he actually believes he is one. It’s simply just a t-shirt that you’re taking way too seriously, like I said, most likely to further your argument. It doesn’t work.

Number 2, we all know she can sing. Just because you use auto-tune doesn’t mean it’s so you “don’t have to work as hard.” Her album is called bionic and shes said in multiple interviews that she wanted to give it a futuristic, sort of robot feel, and auto-tune does that. Auto-tune can simply just be a style and not meant to hide anything, which is what she’s doing in THIS album. She’s worked hard on every album before then, there’s no reason for her to suddenly just half-ass this one. And it’s obvious you didn’t even listen to all of the songs on there, because there are places where she DOES show off her huge vocal ability and doesn’t use an auto-tune. I don’t expect you to listen to all of her songs on this album, but you also shouldn’t make a judgement that she’s not working hard enough just based off a few of her songs. And in the right way, auto-tune can be nice. In the wrong way, it IS annoying, just like her quote said. So I don’t see how that helps your argument, either.

I don’t even LIKE Christina. Honestly, I find her annoying, but I do admit she has talent. But this is honestly not hypocritism on her part and I’m amazed at how far reaching you’re being in this article. Most of your articles don’t even count as hypocrisy, but they’re usually based off SOMETHING. This one you’re basically just basing on a t-shirt and I’m tired of coming to this site just to see stupid things that don’t even belong here. Ever since you started writing, the quality of this site has gone way down. Every article of SJS’ either has spelling mistakes, inaccuracies, or are not hypocritical. It just gets annoying and I’m sick of just being quiet about it and not commenting. I HAD to comment on this one because of how ridiculous it is.

Also, to prove my point that you don’t even read through your articles or spell check them before you post them like a professional should, this line:

“No, that doesn’t annoy my either.”

    *facepalm.*

What happened to the good quality of this site?

OMG! It totally wasn’t “hypocritism” on her part at all! I am so wrong.

This is obviously what the “Auto Tune is for pussies” T-shirt was referring to.

Karma, SJS is right on this one. Christina got talent? She doesn’t need Auto-Tune. It’s just like all those models who claim they don’t need photoshop to look great…

I hate the sound of Auto-tune, I have yet to hear it used as a “good” effect (in my opinion). That tee’s wording is a little strong for it to just be a joke, and considering the people who use it and Christina’s talent, I think it is fair to assume she meant to send a message. It probably would have been a good idea to stick with her real voice. If the public wants to hear “bionic” they’ll listen to Britney.

Autotune can be used appropriately – Lady GaGa has a very nice singing voice and uses autotuning in her songs to do vocal tricks that can’t be done otherwise.

But using autotune to even out a voice is lazy and ruins the music. Seriously, could you imagine Willie Nelson if they smoothed out his voice? Or Aretha Franklin? And when it comes to bands it’s how well all the little idiosyncrasies and imperfections blend together that make a group great.

I love the Snarker and I love the Aguilera. I don’t get why people are really tearing this album down. I went into it expecting to hate it, because I have been a fan of hers for years and I hated the video for the first single. But I listened to every song on the album and I really liked it. I don’t really see the comparisons to Gaga (and don’t get me wrong, I’m a devout believer in the Church of Gaga) and I don’t see why people are really sharpening their claws on this one.

I still hear the big belted notes on this one and I still hear the auto-tune used on the more danceable tracks.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see the fuss. *shrug*

Singers have used a lot of different methods for “creatively” altering their voices: everything from Vocorders to Bullhorns. We don’t call that laziness for not mastering the vocal gymnastics required to produce those sounds.

Yes, AutoTune can be used for laziness (and was certainly the intent), and a far too many use it for that purpose, but that doesn’t mean it’s the *only* use. Screwdrivers are intended to turn screws, but I have, on occastion, used them as chisels and levers.

AutoTune can change Pitch, but it also changes Timbre. When you get some evidence she used it for the former as opposed to the latter. Then I’ll be on board the Hypocrisy Train.

    Christina Aguilera still makes records?

OR… Christina Aguilera? Is it 2001 already?

Auto-tune was created for people who can’t sing. There are so many “stars” out there who couldn’t hit a note with a baseball bat so they need it. They wouldn’t have careers without it. Today’s “stars” are not necessarily built on talent but on images. It’s a sad world we live in when great singers can’t get recognition but crappy singers make millions of dollars from strutting their crotches instead of their talent.

There is no issue with Aguilera using the Auto-Tune. As mentioned above, it serves its purpose.

The issue is that she wore a t-shirt admonishing those who do use it. This t-shirt created a buzz throughout the blogosphere when it came out and Aguilera was cheered for rejecting the Auto-tune.

If she wears a t-shirt tearing down people who use auto-tune, and then uses it herself, I don’t see how it’s not hypocrisy.

SJS, we are not the best of friends, but I’m with you on this one.
